JONES PUSHES FOR PARENTS TO BE ON CHARTER SCHOOL BOARDS A parent or guardian would be required to be on charter school boards of directors under an initiative from State Senator Emil Jones III (D-Chicago).

“Parents have the strongest interest in a school doing well because they have a child attending there,” Jones said. “They wouldn’t be using the position as a springboard for higher office.” Currently, charter schools are administered and governed by their boards of directors or other governing bodies in the manner provided in their charters. Also under the legislation, every voting member of a charter school’s board or governing body must complete a minimum of four hours of professional development leadership training.

House Bill 3659 passed the Senate Education Committee and is scheduled to go to the Senate floor for further debate.

ROBINSON BACKS MEASURE TO PREVENT HEALTH INSURANCE RATE INCREASES To help ensure access to affordable health care for Illinois residents, state Rep. Lamont Robinson, Jr., D-Chicago, recently supported legislation to prevent excessive health insurance rate increases.

The Robinson-backed House Bill 471 aims to prevent increases to health insurance premiums by requiring current plans and proposed rate changes to be reviewed and approved by the Department of Insurance. The Department would have the authority to Lamont Robinson prohibit rate increases that are excessive or unreasonable. In addition, this legislation would require the Department to issue an annual report to the General Assembly on health insurance rates in the Illinois market.

“No one should have to sacrifice their wellbeing as a result of health care costs that are too high,” Robinson said. “While more work must be done to expand access to health care, this legislation takes a necessary step toward ensuring affordable health insurance for all.”

ABA CENTER FOR INNOVATION AND LSC LAUNCH LEGAL TECH DONATION EFFORT Seven legal tech companies are the first to join a new partnership between the American Bar Association and the Legal Services Corporation to provide free technology products and services to legal aid offices that help low-income Americans.

“The ABA and LSC seek to produce a win/win for tech companies and legal aid providers,” ABA President Bob Carlson said. “More than 85 percent of low-income American households have a civil legal need that goes unmet each year. The donations from these generous companies will directly help bridge this ‘justice gap’ at a time when our nation’s legal aid organizations are being challenged to do more with less.”

In the United States, as many as one in three adults has been arrested by the age of 23 with communities of color being disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system, according to an analysis of Bureau of Justice Statistics Data that was released by The Sentencing Project. Additionally, whether or not a person has spent time incarcerated, simply having an arrest or conviction record can create barriers to basic human needs like housing.

In Cook County, the Just Housing Initiative has begun to chip away at that existing barrier to fair housing by strongly advocating for the Just Housing Amendment which was recently passed by the Cook County Board of Commissioners and will go into effect in November.

The Just Housing Initiative is a coalition of over 100 organizations and individuals who have come together to address housing barriers that individuals with arrest and conviction records face.

The recently passed Just Housing Amend-

ment is a huge victory for the Just Housing Initiative and will provide a new layer of protection for individuals with arrest and conviction records from discrimination while applying for housing. The Amendment requires that housing providers don’t consider arrests, juvenile records, and sealed or expunged records when approving or denying a housing application, according to information provided by the Just Housing Initiative.

“In a situation where a person actually has a conviction, a landlord is in the position where they can no longer just give a blanket denial to that person. They actually have to do what’s called an individualized assessment,” said Gianna Baker, outreach manager for Housing Action Illinois. “This gives landlords the opportunity to consider a person as a whole person and to have a conversation that shares who that person is beyond just their record.”

The individualized assessment should look into the nature and severity of the crime, how long ago it was, the person’s age when they were convicted, and if there is evidence of rehabilitation. If the landlord still decides to deny the person’s housing

application they must also provide the applicant with the information that was used to make that decision.

“Obviously, there was a great deal of testimony about the importance of this ordinance,” said Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson. “The broad support that we’ve seen for this ordinance across the county is quite humbling but it’s also an opportunity for us to recognize that as a county, we have the responsibility to provide justice and equity for families across this county where for far too long children have been left homeless because of a mistake their parent made.”

During a Cook County Human Relations Committee hearing that took place shortly before the Just Housing Amendment was passed, Cook County resident, Troy O’Quin, testified about his personal struggle to find housing for himself, his wife, and his two daughters because of his record. As Troy says, “It takes only a second to break the law but a lifetime to live with the consequences.

One second, one crime, one serious lack of judgment and in America this can be a life sentence,” O’Quin said in the Human Relations Committee hearing.

ABC Announces New and Re-Appointed Leaders to Its Board of Directors The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), an inclusive organization dedicated to the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and the elimination of health disparities, recently announced the election of new and returning members to its board of directors.

Michelle A. Albert, MD, MPH, President-elect, and Elizabeth Ofili, MD, MPH, Chair-elect, will serve for one year before stepping into their role as president and board chair, respectively, in March 2020.

Anthony Fletcher, MD began his two-year term on the board of directors in April.

Dr. Albert is a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and director of the CeNter for the StUdy of AdveRsiTy and CardiovascUlaR DiseasE (NURTURE). She maintains a clinical practice focused on preventive cardiology and the most critically ill heart disease patients at UCSF. She has a distinguished novel research career focused on adversity and cardiovascular disease and is the principal

investigator for NIH RO1 funding, an American Heart Association (AHA) Merit Award and other foundation funding. She is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and the Association of University Cardiologists (AUC). She is President of the AHA’s San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley Board of Directors. She has held multiple roles within the ABC, including most recently as Secretary of the Board of Directors. Dr. Albert also serves on the Sarnoff Foundation Board of Directors and the NHLBI Board of External Experts.

Dr. Ofili is a professor of medicine (Cardiology) at Morehouse School of Medicine, and chief medical officer of the Morehouse Choice Accountable Care Organization. She is the founder of AccuHealth Technologies, “Empowering Patient-Centered Health and Wellness.”

She is the principal investigator of the NIH funded national consortium of the Research Centers at Minority

Institutions (RCMI) which includes over 18 historically Black, Hispanic, and Minority Serving Institutions across the continental United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. She is the multi principal investigator of the NIH funded statewide Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (GACTSA), and the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN). She also serves on the boards of: Georgia BIO, Georgia’s Life Sciences Partner and Alliant Health Solutions.

Dr. Ofili is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) and the AUC. Dr. Ofili was the eighth and first woman president of the ABC. Dr. Fletcher currently practices at the Cardiology and Medicine Clinic in Little Rock, Arkansas in association with Dr. Frances R. Harris and Dr. Joe L. Hargrove. He has practiced cardiology in the Little Rock community for the past 32 years. He is an active staff physician at Baptist Medical Center, Arkansas Heart Hospital, St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center and is

a former clinical professor in the Department of Cardiology at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He was past president of three different affiliates of the American Heart Association (AHA).

He has served as president and CFO of the Arkansas Medical Dental and Pharmaceutical Association. He was a past member of the National Board of the AHA and has served on several national committees.

Currently, he is a member of the Arkansas Commission for Healthcare Improvement (past chairman), and he sits on the Advisor Board of the UAMS College of Public Health.

WOKE Entrepreneur Summit Targets Millennials And

Xennials, Features 40 Of The City’s Top Business Professionals

For the second year in a row, the Chicago Urban League is partnering with US Bank to host the WOKE Entrepreneur Summit in Chicago. The one-day summit will take place on May 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lacuna Lofts and is specifically targeting African American entrepreneurs from the Millennial and Xennial generations.

The WOKE Entrepreneur Summit is different from the typical more formal entrepreneurship conferences because the event has been built with 21 to 45-year-old African American entrepreneurs in mind. This means that suits are discouraged and “casual flyness is preferred,” according to the event invitation.

Jason Johnson, director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Chicago Urban League, said the purpose of the summit is to provide African American entrepreneurs in the target market, with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to grow. That includes existing entrepreneurs who want to successfully grow their businesses or others who want to get

their new businesses off the ground.

In order to reach this specific demographic, the Chicago Urban League and US Bank have intentionally woven relevant elements of pop culture into the various workshop themes to further engage attendees.

“Millennials kind of communicate differently than the generations before them and we really wanted this to be Millennial and Xennial centric,” said Johnson. “We wanted it to be a conference but not necessarily feel like one. We wanted it to almost feel like an educational party where you’re gaining knowledge and insight in a very relaxed and fun environment.”

Johnson is calling this upcoming event “an entrepreneurship conference for the culture” and some of the different workshop titles include Getting to the Bag: Monetizing Your Creativity, #LastNightWasAMovie: Creating Memorable Event Experiences, and The Bounce Back Was Vicious: From Returning Citizen to Successful Entrepreneur.

The event will feature over 40 of the city’s top business professionals and entrepreneurs

who are Millenials and Xennials themselves and who will serve as speakers and workshop leaders at the event.

“We wanted to make the content approachable for the demographic,” said Johnson. “The workshop titles are all modern and based on pop culture but the people providing the workshops are some of the top young professionals and young entrepreneurs, aged 21 to 45, in the Chicago market.”

The Chicago Urban League Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, of which Johnson is the director, was founded in 2007 as a way to help African American entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses. The Center provides the necessary tools that entrepreneurs need to operate a successful business along with helping them obtain diversity certifications and bid on public and private contracts, according to the Chicago Urban League’s website.

“This age demographic isn’t really the business owners of tomorrow, they are the business owners of right now,” said Johnson.

Hyde Park Youth Symphony to Perform Final Concert of 2018-19 Season The Hyde Park Youth Symphony (HPYS) is the only youth orchestra operating on Chicago’s South Side and has been in existence for over 60-years.

The mission of the (HPYS) is to bring together diverse students from the South Side of Chicago and beyond to provide a high-quality orchestral performance experience as a training ground for the next generation of performers, educators, and advocates of music and the arts.

The program offers three different orchestras for students at varying levels of ability and experience.

Rehearsing on Thursday evenings at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts on the campus of the University of Chicago, the HPYS brings a racially and economically diverse group of young musicians together to increase their orchestral performance skills and gain a lifelong appreciation for music and each other.

The Youth Symphony, with approximately 40 members, will perform works by Mozart, Dvorak, and Stravinsky. The orchestra is led

by Matthew Sheppard, a lecturer in the College of Music of the University of Chicago.

The two younger orchestras, the Preparatory Strings (10 members) and the String Orchestra (20 members), are led by Lindsay Wright, a graduate fellow in the College of Music at the University of Chicago.

All three of the orchestras in the Hyde Park Youth Symphony program will perform their final concert on Thursday May 23, 2019 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at The Performance Hall of the Logan Center for the Arts.

These two orchestras consist of younger students who will perform popular works that emphasize pedagogical principals as well as artistic interpretation.

All three of the orchestras in the Hyde Park Youth Symphony program will perform their final

concert on Thursday May 23, 2019 from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at The Performance Hall of the Logan Center for the Arts. The Hyde Park Youth Symphony is a Community Partner of the Logan Center for the Arts which is located on 915 E 60th Street. The Logan Center is part of www.thechicagocitizen.com

BUSINESS Chicago Booth Professor Anil Kashyap reappointed to BoE’s Financial Policy Committee

Governor Pritzker Announces New Funding for Capital and Infrastructure Program to Support Growth of Minority-Owned Businesses

University of Chicago Booth School of Business Professor Anil Kashyap has been reappointed by UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond as an external member of the Financial Policy Committee (FPC) at the Bank of England.

This is Kashyap’s second term. The three-year term will begin on Oct. 1, 2019. His first term ends Sept. 30, 2019.

The FPC was created in the wake of the banking crises by the Financial Services Act of 2012 to protect and enhance the stability of the UK’s financial system by identifying, monitoring and addressing systemic risks.

Mark Carney, Governor of the Bank of England, said, “I look forward to the FPC benefiting further from Anil’s insights from academia, creative thinking and willingness to challenge and to sharpen our communications.”

Kashyap is the Edward Eagle Brown Professor of Economics and Finance at Chicago Booth, where he teaches classes on central banking and financial crises.

His research focuses on monetary policy, financial intermediation and regulation, and business cycles.

Prior to joining the Chicago Booth faculty in 1991, Kashyap spent three years as an economist for the

Randa Accessories to Acquire Haggar Clothing Co. Randa Accessories, one of the world’s leading accessories companies, announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of Haggar Clothing Co. Randa, a privately-held company founded in 1910, produces belts, wallets, headwear, slippers, luggage, neckwear, jewelry, and other accessories under 50 brands, including Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, Columbia Sportswear, Dickies, and Kenneth Cole. Randa distributes its products globally through more than 20,000 stores and employs over 4,000 associates at 26 offices located in 10 countries.

Since its beginnings in a one-room office in Dallas in 1926, Haggar Clothing Co. has grown from a manufacturer of men’s fine dress pants and slacks into one of the most recognized apparel brands in the market.

Haggar also owns Montreal-based Tribal.

Tribal was founded in 1971 and is the largest women’s sportswear supplier to the specialty boutique market in North America, with over 2,400 active accounts.

In 1938, Haggar created the first ready-towear, finished bottom, pre-cuffed pant. During World War II, the company kept factories running 24 hours a day to supply over 10 million uniforms to the U.S. military. Haggar coined the word “slacks” to be worn during “slack time.” By the end of the decade, Haggar had become the largest producer of slacks in the world.

In 1980, the company began production of sport coats, vests, and Haggar “Custom Fit” suits, which allowed customers to purchase jackets and pants separately, creating a new menswear category: “suit separates.”

Haggar has over 80 branded brick-andmortar retail locations, a dedicated directto-consumer ecommerce platform, and its products are sold in over 10,000 stores throughout North America.

Life or Death: IDOT safety campaign aims to educate drivers, honor legacies

1. Give books on how to successfully navigate the job search process. One of the more popular books is “The Secret to Getting a Job After College: Marketing Tactics to Turn Degrees into Dollars.” The newest edition addresses obstacles that college students have to overcome to make it through the job search process.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has launched the second year of Life or Death Illinois, expanding the successful multimedia safety campaign to feature the real stories of Illinois residents killed in traffic crashes.

Life or Death Illinois debuted in 2018 as the first comprehensive approach by IDOT to reduce injuries and fatalities associated with motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, seatbelt use, work zones and impaired and distracted driving.

“With more than 1,000 traffic fatalities each year in Illinois, this campaign is an important part of our effort to drive that number to zero,” said Acting Transportation Secretary Omer Osman.

“These stories involve someone’s parent, brother, sister, son, daughter, neighbor or coworker. By putting names and faces to these people, we show the human toll that’s tied to the decisions we make behind the wheel every day.”

Earlier in the year, IDOT asked

the public to submit stories of loved ones killed in traffic crashes. Using these real stories, including the county where the fatal crash occurred, audiences are asked to consider the seriousness of the issues on our roads and how their actions play a role.

The campaign is running throughout the year on various media, including digital billboards, social media and online platforms, as well as traditional radio and TV channels. Additional information is available at lifeordeathillinois.com, where the public can follow the campaign on social media and continue to share stories of lives lost.

According to provisional data, 1,032 people died on Illinois roads in 2018, the third consecutive year of more than 1,000 traffic fatalities in the state. This year, there have been 244, based on preliminary statistics through May 2.

Life or Death Illinois is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.

Banks, Morgan And Kostek Revealed As Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’s 2019 Cover Models Sports Illustrated Swimsuit (SI Swimsuit) has revealed this year’s covers, each one featuring a single model: Tyra Banks, supermodel, entrepreneur and media mogul; Alex Morgan, US National Women’s Soccer team star and Olympic gold medalist; and Camille Kostek, 2018 SI Swimsuit Model Search winner and SI Swimsuit Rookie this year. SI Swimsuit hit the newsstands on Wednesday, May 8.

This marks the third SI Swimsuit cover for Banks, who came out of modeling retirement specifically for this shoot. She was photographed in Great Exuma, Bahamas by Laretta Houston. Morgan was photographed in St. Lucia by Ben Watts, and Kostek was photographed in Kangaroo Island, South Australia by Josie Clough.

New Proposal From Landmark Development Company Could Create New Transit Hub

The Landmark Development Company recently released a development proposal for ONE Central which, if approved, would create an integrated and central transit hub near the lakefront, a completely new transit system specific to lakefront destinations, thousands of new parking stalls, new green space, and space for commercial development on a part of Lake Shore Drive that is currently considered un-developable.

According to its website, Landmark Development Company is a full-service real estate firm that specializes in destination developments. As the lead developer of ONE Central, Landmark is utilizing a team of professionals that have designed, built, financed and operated similar successful projects across the world.

This project consists of two elements, one being the civic infrastructure investment and the second being commercial development.

The Landmark Development Company is calling part one of the ONE Central proposal the Civic Build which is described as an infrastructure investment that is centered around connecting transit on the lakefront.

“The Civic Build is a major infrastructure investment that includes building a major transit hub that will connect the Metra train with the CTA Orange Line train and potentially the Amtrak train. We are also creating a commuter line that we call the CHI-Line and that would run from our transit hub to the museums, the stadium, the lakefront, McCormick Place, the park, Navy Pier, and to Michigan Avenue,” said Robert Dunn, president of Landmark Development Company.

The Civic Build also includes 6,000 parking stalls, new green space, public gathering and event venues, and retail, dining, and entertainment amenities which will all come out to being an estimated $3.8 billion investment by way of the Landmark Development Company.

Once the Civic Build is complete the area becomes developable and that will make way for part two of the project which is major commercial development.

“Once that Civic Build is complete, it makes the site, which is currently not a developable site because of all the rail yard operations that exist there, it makes the site developable. That means that it will be able to support a considerable amount of dense urban development that would

include office residential, hotel, health and wellness, education, hospitality, and of course, retail dining, entertainment,” said Dunn.

Landmark has estimated that there could be over 18 million square feet of vertical development around the Civic Build.

One of the most interesting points of this proposed massive development is that it will be privately funded and after completion, the State of Illinois will be able to buy the Civic Build from

the Landmark Development Company.

“The tool that we’ve proposed with the State is basically an economic development tool that gives the state the ability to enter into a contract with us to privately finance and build the Civic Build with private capital up front and then over a period of time, the State will make us a series of equity payments and we are estimating after about 20 years, the State will be able to take full ownership of the Civic Build asset,” said Dunn.

Links, Inc. Chicago Chapter Hosted Its 59th Annual Debutant Cotillion The Chicago (IL) Chapter of The Links, Inc. recently held its 59th Annual Debutante Cotillion, a sold out affair at the Fairmont Hotel.

The event celebrated the accomplishments of 24 beautiful, community minded high school Junior and senior young ladies, their Escorts, 2 Marshals and 15 7th and 8th grade young ladies participating as Hostesses in the "Junior Debutante" Program.

According to Cotillion Chairperson, Risa Davis, this event continued the Chicago Chapter' s work to support impactful local nonprofits, particularly those focused on decreasing the stig-ma of mental health challenge in the African American community and promoting mental wellness.

Through the efforts of this fundraiser, $35,000 in grants and scholarships were awarded at the event, including support to Trilogy Behavioral Healthcare, Family Rescue, Mercy Home for Boys and Girls and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
