IUPUI RECEIVES $3 MILLION ENDOWMENT FROM NINA MASON PULLIAM CHARITABLE TRUST The Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program at IUPUI has received a $3 million endowment from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. The largest single grant in trust history, announced today at University Tower, will guarantee sustained financial support of the program, which benefits underresourced students.

The Nina Scholars program, which is part of IUPUI’s University College, provides nontraditional students from various backgrounds with the resources and financial support needed to complete their college education. Students participating in the program may be adults with dependents, have physical disabilities or have involvement in the public foster care system.

U.S. SURGEON GENERAL TO ADDRESS NATION’S OPIOID EPIDEMIC On May 23 at the Grand Hyatt Washington in in Washington, D.C., the United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH, will deliver the keynote address at a Solutions Forum hosted by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), addressing the nation’s growing opioid epidemic and discussing ways to combat the crisis with emergency physicians. It’s part of ACEP’s 2018 Leadership & Advocacy Conference. In the afternoon, the Solutions Forum will focus on end-of-life care issues. Experts will discuss two areas: (1) ways to promote advanced care planning and appropriate end-of-life care, such as new value-based payment models, and (2) different tools and programs for advance care planning being used in emergency departments, and related ethical considerations.

RAOUL PUSHES FOR STRONGER REVIEW OF OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTINGS State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago 13th) passed legislation recently to ensure all officerinvolved shootings are properly investigated.

Senate Bill 2378 requires every law enforcement agency in the state to develop a written policy for the internal review of officer-involved shootings that would be available by request under the Freedom of Information Act. This legislation comes after a report from the Better Government Association which found that suburban police departments were neglecting to take administrative action after officers were involved in shootings.

“I have spent years working to improve relations between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve,” Raoul said.

“Establishing trust is an essential part of that effort, and that is impossible to do if police aren’t held accountable for their actions.”

Senate Bill 2378 passed unanimously and heads to the House for consideration.

enters For New Horizons, Inc. (Centers) will be hosting their annual Friendraiser, Comedy for a Cause, on May 24th at the Promontory in Hyde Park. The event will feature three comedic acts, including Leon Rogers, and the proceeds from the event will be used to support the family services that CNH provides.

Founded in 1971, Centers was originally built on early childhood education services. In the beginning, Centers operated childcare centers inside of the Chicago Housing Authority high-rise housing projects on the south side of Chicago. From there, the organization grew its services to better serve the families of the young children that were in the childcare programs.

“We are a Head Start provider and Head Start looks at the whole family, not just the student. So, we worked with the children in those developments and the rest of our

programs were grown out of that, like our workforce development, our counseling, our youth development and our adult case management services. We learned that families needed all of those services to support a child through preschool and beyond,” said Christa Hamilton, CEO of the Centers for New Horizons.

Centers is approaching their 50th year of operation and they have grown to provide what Hamilton calls a complete life cycle of services starting with children that are 6 weeks old and reaching all the way to senior citizens in the community.

“A lot of our work is really geared towards reducing violence and the approach Centers has taken to reduce violence in the City of Chicago is through employment. We work really hard to get those employment programs because we find that a lot of the youth have been engaged in the justice system or truancy at school prior to working with us and those numbers decline once they start working,” said Hamilton.

that operate on a case-by-case basis. One of the goals at Centers is to be an agent for the community and that means never saying no to someone who is in need of services.

“A lot of our funding comes from the government and they have [a] very specific population that we are required to work with, but we work in a greater community that is not always attached to those funding sources so the money from this fundraiser will go towards those service gaps for individuals that may not be tied to the funding that we already receive, but they still need help,” said Hamilton.

Guests at the Friendraiser will engage in networking, cocktails, food, and comedy.

Centers will provide a presentation of their programs and present the Community Partner Award to Victoria Lakes-Battle, Executive Director of the Illinois Facilities Fund Chicago branch, and the Parent of the Year Award to Jasmine Sims for her contribution to the organization as a parent.

Former Robert Taylor Homes Resident Releases Book About Experiences

ver the weekend, Crystal Lampkins-Banks released a new book, Hi’Yella: Life in the Projects, that details her experiences growing up in the Robert Taylor Homes, a low-income high-rise housing development in Bronzeville that has since been demolished.

The title of the book means a lot to Lampkins-Banks. The word hi is meant to pay homage to the high-rise buildings that made up the Robert Taylor Homes, also to serve as a simple greeting to readers. Boxville Community Market Wants to Expand its Footprint

ast summer Boxville, a neighborhood market located at 51st Street and Calumet Avenue, set up several shipping containers on the land just outside of the 51st Street green line stop to house emerging local businesses and provide the Bronzeville community with their spin on a community market.

This year, Boxville is back for round two with the hope of expanding.

“Last season was our first season and we started the market in June of last year and the season ran through September. Patrons were able to shop with us to purchase fresh fruit and produce, street food, t-shirts, jewelry, accessories, home decor, and bath and body products. Our two main objectives are providing the space and platform for local entrepreneurs to be able to sell their products in the community and then to help build [the] community along the 51st Street corridor,” said Michelle E. Lanaux-Merritt, Boxville Market manager.

Boxville is an initiative of the Urban Junction Foundation (UJF) and its founder, Bernard Lloyd.

After hosting and participating in the Bronzeville Bike Tour, Lloyd realized that there was a need for the bikers to have a space to socialize and spend some time tuning up their bikes after the ride. From this realization came the Bike Box which was the first shipping container located on the Boxville Site. Lloyd spent somewhere between $5,000 and $7,000 to get the Bike Box up and running and from there decided to expand on the idea to provide entrepreneurs a more affordable platform to get their businesses in the community, said Lanaux-Merrit.

The 2018 Boxville season will kick off on June 13th and run through September. In the meantime, Boxville staff and organizers are hard at work trying

to further expand Boxville to be able to accommodate even more vendors.

The first ever Boxville fundraiser, Help Build Boxville, will take place on May 31st and all of the proceeds will go towards completing existing containers, establishing additional boxes, extending market hours, and creating an adjacent neighborhood square to house community building activities, according to a press release about the fundraiser.

“There is an opportunity to add additional shipping containers to the site which means that we would be able to expand the offering at Boxville and as part of that expansion we want to add a neighborhood square

that would be a community space where people could come to access the market, but also arts and crafts, live music, and we want to add a game box to the site so that people could come to play table tennis, chess, and checkers as well as a greenhouse box so that we can start growing on the site itself and then additional boxes where we are able to expand the number of entrepreneurs that are joining us at the market on a regular basis,” said Lanaux-Merrit.

“It is kind of the old-school country slang for the description of my skin complexion which is high yellow, but my grandma would say hi’yella. I always was the lighter one on my mother’s side of the family and within my friends that lived in the projects and a lot of times I got picked on because of that,” said Lampkins-Banks.

The book chronicles the history of the Robert Taylor Homes along with LampkinsBanks’ personal journey of trauma within in the projects and self-discovery after she was able to move away from the housing development.

“I was born in 1976 into the curses of poverty and I was raised in the Robert Taylor Homes on the south side of Chicago. My parents moved from the south on a quest to create a principal income. After settling in, they started a family and were struggling to make ends meet and our living situation became a place of survival, this was our permanent

residence,” said Lampkins-Banks.

Growing up, Lampkins-Banks remembers the Robert Taylor Homes as being the opposite

of a diverse community and distorting her idea of normal. “[The projects] were created to have African

Americans be confined to a certain statistic and a certain atmosphere, with the background of us not growing or surviving in a way that anyone else would. It wasn’t a diverse community, we didn’t have a lot of resources, we didn’t have a lot of information to help us grow and a lot of us didn’t have educations,” said Lampkins-Banks.

The journey Banks took to leave the Robert Taylor Homes was not only about leaving the physical space, but also a spiritual journey that allowed her to let go of the trauma and find motivation.

“Growing up I’ve witnessed shootings, knife fights, teen pregnancy, gang banging, drug dealing, you name it,” said Lampkins-Banks.

“Most of the parents were single mothers and we thought, coming up as a kid, that being a single mom and having babies was normal. We thought we had time to get our lives together and go before God. I always thought you had to be older to become saved, I thought that’s what salvation was. I didn’t know that you can always depend on God like I do now.”
