FOOT LOCKER FOUNDATION, INC. SURPRISES HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WITH $20,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP Foot Locker Foundation, Inc. recently surprised high school senior Cade Pinalto of Chicago with a celebration and an oversized check in the amount of $20,000 as part of its annual Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program at Lane Tech High School.

From the classroom to his community, Cade is an inspiring example of overcoming obstacles to become the best that he can be. Having founded Sidelined USA, a non-profit that supports athletes who can no longer compete due to a career-ending injury or condition, he has built up his volunteer/mentor staff and actively sought out partnerships and sponsorships to further help other student athletes. He’s also a student basketball coach and a stadium announcer for the baseball team. Achieving academic success with a 4.7 GPA and working towards getting into one of the top ten business programs in the country, the Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Scholarship will help Cade as he pursues an education in business finance and looks forward to helping others achieve their goals.

To date, the Foundation has distributed nearly $3 million in college scholarships to 140 deserving high school seniors.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF ILLINOIS OPENS FIRST-EVER NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED CENTER Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) has opened a new door to help build healthier communities. The Blue Door Neighborhood Center is the first-ever neighborhood-based center for BCBSIL. The center is aimed at improving community health by addressing common health challenges with wellness classes, connections to social services and customer engagement.

The center is open to everyone – BCBSIL members and non-members - and offers no-cost programming focused on whole-person health: physical, mental and social. STATE TREASURER FRERICHS’ I-CASH PROGRAM BREAKS RECORD, RETURNS $200 MILLION A record-breaking $200 million in forgotten cash and securities has been returned to its owners during the past 10 months, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said recently. It is the largest amount in the program’s 58-year history.

Such milestones typically are recorded in July to capture the state’s entire fiscal year, which is July 1- June 30. With two months remaining in the current fiscal year, that means the state treasurer’s office will shatter previous records set in fiscal years 2018, 2017 and 2016.

The City Club of Chicago recently collaborated with the University of Chicago Office of Civic Engagement to co-host Race & Place: Young Adults and the Future of Chicago, a panel discussion on how young adults experience the city based on their ethnicity and location.

The panel featured Jahmal Cole, Cathy Cohen, and Michelle Morales who are all prominent civic leaders and activists working with young people in Chicago.

Cathy Cohen is a professor at the University of Chicago and the founder and director of the Black Youth Project and GenForward.

GenForward is a national bimonthly survey of young adults that looks at how race and ethnicity affect their experiences and how they think about the world.

As part of the GenForward initiative, Cohen decided to go deeper with her research in Chicago by gathering data from young adults in five specific parts of Chicago including Englewood, Pilsen, China Town, the

North-Side, and Albany Park. The purpose of this research was to discover how a person’s physical location and racial identity could impact their experiences and perceptions of the city.

“Part of what we wanted to do was talk about the nuances and young people’s experience based on where they live and what’s available in their neighborhoods,” said Cohen. “The work that we are trying to do is to talk about the complexity of experiences that young people have in this city.”

Jahmal Cole is the founder of My Block, My Hood, My City which is an exposure-based education program for teens and a network of volunteer initiatives that serves Chicago communities all year long. Cole takes his youth explorers on field trips to open their minds to new ideas and experiences in the hopes that it will change their world view and give them hope for their futures.

“I think you’re a product of your expectations but I also definitely think your environment affects your wellbeing,” said Cole. “We work with at-risk youth but I just think that

the integrity of the whole city is at risk if we aren’t supporting programs that work with youth.”

Both Cohen and Cole spoke about how young people’s experiences can differ based on location, specifically when you look at the difference between young people living on the north side of Chicago versus the south and west sides where violence has been normalized in many communities and there is a lack of economic investment.

Michelle Morales, CEO of Mikva Challenge Illinois, spoke during the panel about the importance of acknowledging and activating young people to remind them that their voices matter.

“At Mikva Challenge we look a lot at access to civics and civic engagement because we all know that unfortunately those numbers match every other number in terms of inequity and young people of color are not getting much access to civics,” said Morales. “Young people in Chicago from any community are clamoring to get involved politically.”

Mental Health Company to Donate Up to $5 Million to Brain Health Charities MedCircle wants to make it fun for people to learn about an important part of the brain to improve their mental health.

After the viewer watches a short two-minute video about a relatively unknown part of the brain, MedCircle donates money to a charity selected by the viewer.

Partnering in this campaign are four leading charities – Mental Health America, NAMI, International Bipolar Foundation and NoStigmas.

Mayor-Elect Lori Lightfoot Meets With Leaders Of Chicago’s Black Print Media Outlets

As Mayor-Elect Lori Lightfoot prepares to be sworn in on May 20, she has been doing her due diligence by meeting with various Chicago leaders to hear their concerns and needs, answer their questions, and share her visions with them.

Most recently, Lightfoot called on a group of leaders from Chicago’s Black print media to participate in a round table discussion.

As the meeting began, Lightfoot welcomed both reporters and publishers from the Citizen Newspaper, the Chicago Defender, the Crusader, Bronzeville Life, Truth Be Told News, and The Final Call.

Right away, members of Chicago’s black print media began to discuss some of the city’s most pressing issues like equitable economic development, race relations, public safety, minority representation in city contracts and accessibility and transparency from the Mayor’s office.

Lightfoot said, with regards to making city projects more inclusive and focused on wealth building, the least Chicago can do is ask larger contractors to prove that they are committed to

partnering with minority groups, women, and veterans in their overall business plan and not just when the city requires them to.

She added, “We have to think about what can the city do to use its power through contracting and otherwise to help build wealth?”

“We are going to send the message and we are going to start speaking our values in a very profound way through our buying power in the market place,” said Lightfoot.

When talking about race relations in the city, there was a general consensus between Lightfoot

and the Black print media representatives that successful and prominent African Americans in Chicago must step up and speak out against the disinvestment, violence, and inequity that affects the south and west sides of the city.

When asked about what kind of a Mayor she plans to be, Lightfoot shared that she plans to be as present and accessible as possible and she’ll hold the mayor’s office accountable for the city services they are responsible for providing. She also said that she is working on a plan to have regular availability for media.

“My focus is not going to be on winning the day’s press cycle. My focus is going to be on government and making good on the mandate that we have received,” said Lightfoot. “I will be available to the press on a regular basis so that you won’t feel like I’m some rare migratory bird.”

Overall, the Black print media round table discussion was productive and Lightfoot stated that this will not be a one time occurrence and she will continue to meet with this group to make sure that they are able to work collaboratively with the Mayor’s office and bring important city news to their readers.

Citizen Honors South Side Educator For Teacher Appreciation Week

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week across the U.S. and while there are a number of stellar teachers working in the City of Chicago, one stands out against the rest for her dedication to meeting the needs of her students and adapting with their changing interests to keep them engaged.

Cynthia Brawner is a graduate of CPS and grew up on the south side.

She has been teaching for over two decades and is currently teaching third grade at James Wadsworth Elementary in Woodlawn where 96.6 percent of the student population is black, according to information from the CPS website.

“What made me come to CPS, outside of having summers off, was that I learned to appreciate the children I saw and realized that I had an opportunity to mold and help direct the minds of young people who are like me and come from a similar background and do really great things with them,” said Brawner.

Wadsworth Elementary is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) school and Brawner said that when the school first started incorporating STEM into the curriculum, she was nervous, but after throwing her self into learning about new technology and attending as many professional development days as she could, she found that she has a passion for STEM herself.

Incorporating STEM into her classroom reignited a passion for technology learning that Brawner always had, but had put on the back burner as she pursued her career in education.

“We are heavy with the technology in our learning and not just traditional technology. What people often call technology is really just electronics but if you think about it, even an ink pen is technology and someone invented that,” said Brawner. “As my students learned what I already knew, I was learning even more and bringing that back to them.”

In order to keep her students involved in their own learning experiences, Brawner has created a community in her classroom that goes beyond the students simply coming to class and listening to what she says. Brawner said that she always asks her students for input on what they are learning.

Because most of her students are black, Brawner has taken it upon herself to incorporate African American History into her lessons all year long and teaches the students not only about big name history makers but also local figures.

“I wanted to bring it back to the Woodlawn community so we looked at Bishop Arthur M. Brazier and Dr. Byron Brazier because those are kind of our change agents in this community and that gives them a sense of African American history not only being worldwide but also right in their back yard,” said Brawner.

“What I do know is that the University of Illinois and their think tank is providing a study of various revenue options,” Governors State University’s Maimon said in a separate interview after the news conference.

Kamedis Clinical Study Validates Traditional Chinese Botanical Efficacy in Eczema Treatment Kamedis™, a provider of advanced botanical solutions for chronic skin disorders, recently announced the results of a clinical study confirming that the traditional Chinese botanicals in its homeopathic over-the-counter Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream play a pivotal role in the product’s ability to reduce eczema rashes.

According to the study, the commercially available Kamedis cream was 44% more effective in treating atopic dermatitis than the Kamedis formula without the botanical extracts. It was also 23% more effective than a competitive OTC brand widely used to provide eczema relief.

The double-blind, randomized, controlled study is the first in the U.S. designed to determine the efficacy of traditional Chinese botanicals in commercial dermatologic treatments.

“We know from more than a decade of R&D that our patented combinations of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs help restore damaged skin to health, but the validation in this study is a significant milestone for the company as well as for the millions of people who suffer from eczema,” said Roni Kramer, founder of Kamedis and lead director of its U.S. strategic business unit. “The results demonstrate that ingredients from nature still play a major role in our search for healing. When sourced, extracted and combined properly, they outperform known vehicles and moisturizers in the marketplace.”

The product: Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream utilizes a patented formulation of Chinese Rhubarb, Great Burnet, Tree of Heaven, Baikal Skullcap, Cnidium Fruit and Licorice extracts along with active and inactive ingredients used in conventional OTC products. Previous studies in published literature have shown that the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of these botanicals reduce eczema flareups by protecting the skin from further irritation, maintaining a moist skin environment, and facilitating relief of impaired skin barrier functions.

The method: The clinical trial involved 108 children and adults from ages 3 to 73 with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis who were randomly divided into three groups of equal size. One group used the Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream, one used the Kamedis formula without the botanical extracts, and one used a leading third-party OTC product. All three groups used a Kamedis wash for the body and face, followed by one of the three randomized treatment creams for the affected areas on the face and body.

The results: After 28 days, patients treated with the complete, botanically rich Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream showed a 6.8% improvement in rash extent and severity as measured by the Body Surface Area (BSA) score, compared to just 4.7% for the Kamedis cream without the botanicals and 5.5% for the non-Kamedis product. That represents a 44% difference in BSA improvement between the complete Kamedis product and the Kamedis formula without botanicals, and a 23% difference between the complete product and the competitive OTC product.

In addition, clear improvement was visually evident after 28 days of using the Kamedis cream. No adverse events were reported.

“This is a ground-breaking study that documents the therapeutic benefits of traditional Chinese botanicals in pharmaceuticals for the first time,” said Kamedis Vice President Clinical, Regulation and QA Deganit BarakShinar. “This has significant implications for the rest of Kamedis’ product line, future product development

by Kamedis and others, and consumers seeking better solutions for various health conditions.”

Complete results are scheduled for publication in the June issue of Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.

All Blues, the forthcoming covers album from the Peter Frampton Band, is set for release on June 7 via UMe. The album is a collection of Frampton’s favorite blues classics and was recorded with his longtime touring band, made up of Adam Lester (guitar/vocals), Rob Arthur (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Dan Wojciechowski (drums).

“I Just Want To Make Love To You” (featuring Kim Wilson) is the first song to be released from the new album, and is available now with digital album pre-order.

All Blues was recorded at Frampton’s studio in Nashville, Studio Phenix, and was co-produced

by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay. The album features additional collaborations with Larry Carlton, Sonny Landreth and Steve Morse.

The vinyl will be available as a double LP and also as a limited edition translucent blue color pressing exclusively at PeterFrampton.com. The double LP will include the bonus track “I Feel So Good,” which was written by Big Bill Broonzy and popularized by Muddy Waters.

Of the album, Frampton explains, “I have always loved to play the blues. When we formed Humble Pie, the first material we played together was just that. For the last two summers I had been playing a handful of blues numbers every night on stage with Steve Miller Band. I enjoyed this immensely and it gave me the idea of doing an ‘All Blues’ album live in the studio with my band. We started the resulting sessions 9 days after coming off the road last year. Over a two-week period, we recorded 23 tracks, all live in the studio. The energy of these tracks is completely different from building a track one instrument at a time. With this recording, we pay tribute to all the original artists who invented this incredible music. I hope you can hear and feel our enjoyment. I’m not sure if you can say we had fun playing the blues. But we definitely did.”

To support All Blues, Frampton will be hosting a new six-week series on SiriusXM’s Deep Tracks channel. “The Peter Frampton Show” will premiere on Friday, May 10 at 10:00am ET on SiriusXM radios (channel 27) and on the SiriusXM app.

Pending Home Sales Climb 3.8% in March Pending home sales rose in March, reversing course from a month prior, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Three of the four major regions saw growth last month, as the Northeast reported a minor slip in contract activity.

The Pending Home Sales Index,* www.nar.realtor/pending-home-sales, a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, increased 3.8% to 105.8 in March, up from 101.9 in February. Year-over-year contract signings declined 1.2%, making this the 15th straight month of annual decreases.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, noted that pending home sales data has been exceptionally fluid over the past several months but predicted that numbers will begin to climb more consistently. “We are seeing a positive sentiment from consumers about home buying, as mortgage applications have been steadily increasing and

mortgage rates are extremely favorable.”

Yun noted that sales activity in the West had increased at a relatively stable rate for five consecutive months before the region saw a significant spike in activity in March. “Despite some affordability issues in the West, the numbers indicate that there is a reason for optimism.

Inventory has increased, too.

These are great conditions for the region.”

Pointing to active listings from data at realtor.com®, Yun says the year-over-year increases indicate a potential rise in inventory. Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, Colo., Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, Wash., San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, Calif., Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, Ore.-Wash., and Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin, Tenn., saw the largest increase in active listings in March compared to a year ago.

Although pending contracts appear to be on an overall upswing, Yun says current sales activity is underperforming. “In the year 2000, we had 5 million home sales. Today, we are close to that same number, but there are 50 million more people in the country,” he said. “There is a pent-up demand in the market, and we should see a better performing market in the coming quarters and years.”

March Pending Home Sales Regional Breakdown The PHSI in the Northeast declined 1.7% to 90.5 in March and is now 0.4% below a year ago. In the Midwest, the index grew 2.3% to 95.3 in March, 5.0% lower than March 2018.

Pending home sales in the South jumped up 4.4% to an index of 127.2 in March, which is 0.7% higher than last March.

The index in the West ascended 8.7% in March to 95.1 and fell only 1.6% below a year ago.
