NEW BAKER LIBRARY EXHIBIT AT HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENT UNION Established in the spring of 1968, the African-American Student Union (AASU), a student club at Harvard Business School (HBS), is marking its 50th anniversary. As part of a year-long celebration, with the help of Senior Lecturer Tony Mayo and his colleagues in the Leadership Initiative, the School’s Baker Library Special Collections has mounted an extensive exhibit in the Library’s north foyer documenting the founding and growth of AASU over two decades, from the troubled times of the late 1960s — in the midst of the civil rights movement, protests against the Vietnam War, urban unrest, and the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Senator Robert F. Kennedy — until 1990. Titled “Agents of Change: The Founding and Impact of the AfricanAmerican Student Union, Harvard Business School,” the exhibit, which will run until next fall, focuses on “the powerful mission of AASU members as agents of change…through their interactions with HBS faculty and staff and their activism on campus. The exhibition also showcases and celebrates the accomplishments of black alumni from 1915 through 1990,” Mayo writes in his introduction to the exhibit’s catalog. The exhibition also spotlights the accomplishments of a number of pioneering black faculty members.

IDPH RECEIVES MASSIVE DONATION FOR SYNTHETIC CANNABINOIDS TREATMENT The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has been working with the Bausch Foundation, the independent charitable organization of Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. (Valeant) to secure a donation of nearly 800,000 tablets of vitamin K. The tablets will provide treatment for people who have suffered severe bleeding after using synthetic cannabinoids (spice, K2, etc.) laced with rat poison. A chemical found in rat poison, brodifacoum, prevents blood from clotting, resulting in severe bleeding. High doses of vitamin K taken over several months can help restore the blood’s ability to clot. Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that are sprayed on to dried plant material. These chemicals are called cannabinoids because they act on the same brain cell receptors as the main active ingredient in marijuana. The health effects from using synthetic cannabinoids can be unpredictable, harmful, and deadly. More than 150 people in Illinois, including three deaths, have been sickened by the synthetic cannabinoids. Symptoms include coughing up blood, blood in the urine, severe bloody nose, bleeding gums, and/or internal bleeding. MOBILE OFFICE HOURS HOSTED BY DUCKWORTH HELPS ILLINOISANS WITH FEDERAL AGENCIES, BENEFITS THEY MAY NEED MACOMB, IL – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) recently
hosted “Mobile Office Hours” at the Macomb Public Library in Macomb, Illinois where constituent service representatives from her office were onsite to help Illinoisans with federal agencies and with receiving the Veterans Affairs, Social Security, Medicare and other federal benefits they may be entitled to. Duckworth’s Mobile Office Hours will take place in communities throughout the state over the coming months to offer constituents who may not be able to drive to one of the Senator’s offices an opportunity to meet with her staff closer to home. At Duckworth’s Mobile Office Hours, constituents can also learn about the federal grant application process, service academy nominations and internship opportunities. Senator Duckworth currently has three offices, one in Chicago, Springfield and Carbondale with additional offices opening soon in Belleville and Rock Island.

he deadline to apply for the South East Chicago Commission’s (SECC) Neighborhood Enhancement Grant Program is quickly approaching. Community groups and organizations from Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, Washington Park, and Woodlawn are encouraged to submit their proposals for funding to support their various projects by May 14. To be considered for a Neighborhood Enhancement Grant of up to $4,000, a project must be highly visible from the street, be completed between June 1 and Sept. 30, physically enhance the neighborhood and build on the character and uniqueness of the community, strengthen civic pride and have a strong sense of community, and be sustainable. “The program is an initiative that is administered by the SECC and we gain community sponsorship from different community partners to help fund the program. We award grants to neighborhood organizations that support beautification projects to enhance the five footprint communities that we serve and enhance the quality of those communities,” said Diane Burnham, executive director of the SECC. The SECC is a community and economic development organization that serves five neighborhoods within Chicago’s southeast lakefront community, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, Washington Park, and Woodlawn. The organization works to foster collaboration and coordination among businesses, organizations, and institutions which ultimately promotes the creation of jobs, economic investment, and www.thechicagocitizen.com
vitality, according to Burnham. This is the 14th year that the SECC has awarded the Neighborhood Enhancement Grants and previous recipients have included neighborhood block clubs, community organizations, school groups, park advisory councils, and other various organized groups. It is not a requirement for applicants to be 501c3 non-profit, the program is open to anyone who has a plan to enhance their community. The program began as a way to beautify the vacant lots that were eyesores in the five communities. Vacant lots also contribute to lower housing values and crime. Since inception, the program has grown and the SECC and Burnham can see that the Neighborhood Enhancement Grants now do much more than just address vacant lots. One particular grant recipient that left an impact on Burnham was the Cornell Park Advisory council who received a Neighborhood Enhancement Grant two years ago to build an educational play space within the park. “Two years ago, Cornell Park was underutilized but they were trying to get the neighbors more engaged. There had been some transient populations and some violence on that block of Cornell from time to time so the park advisory council really worked to build a kiosk to connect neighbors to what’s going on and they also labeled all the trees and made it more of an educational focus so now it’s like a nature play space,” said Burnham. “To me, that is really impactful especially because they have experienced violence. For people who are long-time residents or new residents, to have a project like that for a park that’s in the middle of the block is really impactful.” For more information and to access the grant application visit www.secc-chicago.org.

Museum of Science and Industry Celebrates DNA Days BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
T
he Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) recently celebrated DNA Days with a week of special activities and experiences that exposed visitors to genetic science. This year’s series of events was extra special because it also celebrated the 15 year anniversary of the successful completion of the Human Genome Project. The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international research effort to sequence and map all of the genes, together known as the genome, of members of our species, Homo sapiens. Completed in April 2003, the HGP gave us the ability to see the complete genetic blueprint for human beings, according to www. genome.gov. “What we are doing at MSI is we are pulling together some activities that we generally do around genetics and DNA and amplifying them. We have lots of interesting opportunities for people to do live science experiences here and interact with both our staff and with some young scientists from the University of Chicago,” said Patricia Ward, director of science exhibitions and partnerships at MSI. The museum offered several hands-on DNA activities, some were stationary and some were not. “There are various cart based programs, which are mobile and move around the different areas of the museum, where people
can isolate DNA from a strawberry which is super fun because you get a lot of it. It’s kind of funny because we don’t always realize, or at least it’s not in the front of everybody’s mind, that DNA is in all living things so seeing it come from a strawberry is fun,” said Ward. There were microscope stations set up as part of the event and a workshop where participants got to isolate DNA with the help of the staff. For an extra charge, visitors could have a special experience, the Fab Lab, where they were able to create a 3D print model of a DNA helix to take home as a memory of this year’s DNA Days celebration. Graduate students, studying genetic science, from the University of Chicago were present at this year’s celebration and served as Ward’s favorite part of DNA Days. It was a great experience for both the visitors and the young scientists, according to Ward. The various activities were flawlessly tied into MSI’s Genetics and Farm Tech exhibits which showcase the importance of DNA in our everyday lives. “We are calling attention to some of our other exhibits like Genetics and Farm Tech where we have a greenhouse and talk a lot about genetics, the fundamentals, and how the Human Genome Project sort of paved the way for a lot more advancements which we are beginning to realize today about human health and genetics and personalized precision medicine,” said Ward.

Cook County Judge Directs Oratory Competition in Kenwood BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

ook County Circuit Court Judge Stanley L. Hill frequently steps away from his bench to direct the Oratorical program for PUSH Excel, the educational arm of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition founded by Rev. Jessie Jackson Sr. The Oratorical Society recently held their Spring Oratorical Competition at 930 E. 50th St., the Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s national headquarters. The competition accepts students as young as Pre-K and recently added a level five age group to include adult participants. The contestants are divided by grade level and first, second, and third place awards were given within each grouping. Level one is for pre-k to third grade, level two includes fourth through sixth grades, level three is seventh and eighth grades, level four is for ninth through 12th, and level five is for college students and lifelong learners.

For the last seven years, Hill has been involved with PUSH Excel and their Oratorical program. He believes in the power of oratorical competitions partly because of is own experience as a child participating in oratory competitions through his church. “I think I was in my first oratory competition when I was four. We would have competitions where we would compete with other churches and the winner would go to the regional competition,” said Hill. “I remember being twelve and leaving Chicago and going down to Kansas City to participate in a national oratory competition and I believe that has a lot to with who I am today because of that early exposure that I got from people who spent time with me and encouraged me by showing me the importance of being able to speak confidently in any setting and situation.” Students in the PUSH Excel oratorical competition were given a
very long list of speeches to choose from to memorize and present in front of the judges. They were all scored on the same guidelines which included appearance, attire, and personality, delivery and presentation, and their overall effectiveness for a total of 100 points. “The ability to take a speech, to study it, memorize it, and then recite it is a great way to build positive selfesteem which is so important. With positive self-esteem you’re able to go into life with an inspiring, succeed -against-the-odds message,” said Hill. The first place winner in each age group received $100, second place received $75, and third place received $50, and students who received an honorable mention were awarded a $10 prize. Each student received a medal based on their placement in the competition. Judge Hill directs oratory lessons every Saturday morning at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters and will be presenting the next oratory competition at the annual Rainbow PUSH Convention in June. New Report: One in 29 Chicago Commuters Travel 90+ Mins to Work
Illinois Unemployment Rate Dips in March

Department of Employment Security (IDES) recently announced that the unemployment rate decreased by -0.1 percentage point to 4.6 percent in March and nonfarm payrolls decreased by -2,100 jobs over-the-month, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. The February job gain was virtually unchanged from its initial report. (+15,300 jobs versus +15,200 jobs). Job growth improved in the January to March period posting average monthly gains of +4,000 jobs, an increase over the prior three-month period (October to December 2017) with average monthly gains of +2,200 jobs. “The number of unemployed in Illinois is at its lowest level since December 2006 and the unemployment rate dipped to its lowest level since March 2007,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “The stabilization of the labor force is also an encouraging sign.” “Professional and Business

Since 2005, the share of super commuters nationwide increased 15.9 percent, reaching 2.8 percent of all commuters in 2016, an increase many experts attribute to skyrocketing housing costs. As residents are priced out expensive housing markets, many may endure longer commutes. Eight of the ten metros with the largest share of super commuters are in regions surrounding three notoriously expensive cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. In a report -- Apartment List dug into Census data on commute times and transit usage to better understand the rise in super commuters. Here are some highlights from the report: • In 2016, 152,313 Chicago metro workers endured super commutes, comprising 3.5% of all Chicago commuters • The share of Chicago super commuters has decreased -4.1% since 2005 when 3.6% of commuters were super commuters • Super commuters are more likely to rely on public transportation. 83.5% of non-super commuters in the Chicago metro drive to work, compared to 57.2% of super commuters. • Low-income commuters disproportionately rely on public transportation compared to their higher income peers, irrespective of their commute length. The industry sectors with the largest over-the-year declines include: Information Services (-4,600); Professional and Business Services (-2,700); and Other Services (-1,200). Illinois nonfarm payrolls were up +0.6 percent over-the-year in sharp contrast to the nation’s +1.5 percent over-the-year gain in March.
Obama Foundation Announces New Program to Train Emerging Leaders Across Africa CHICAGO – The Obama Foundation today
announced a new addition to its international programs: the Obama Foundation Leaders: Africa. This one-year leadership development and civic engagement program will train and support 200 promising young leaders across Africa working in government, civil society, and the private sector. The Foundation received nearly 10,000 applications for 200 slots. The Obama Foundation Leaders: Africa program will launch in Johannesburg, South Africa with a five-day convening. The convening will run from July 14 through July 18 and include plenary sessions, problemsolving workshops, and technical trainings that will help these young emerging leaders drive positive change throughout Africa. The convening will also include a town hall meeting with President Obama where he will hear about their experiences and the work they’re doing. Following the South Africa convening, leaders will remain connected to the Foundation and one another via an online platform where they will engage in topical discussions, access leadership and training resources, and participate in trainings and webinars led by experts and industry leaders. The individuals selected to participate in the
Obama Foundation Leaders: Africa program will ultimately serve as the backbone of a larger ecosystem of Foundation changemakers across the continent and, eventually, the world, as the Foundation launches similar leadership programs in regions around the world. The Obama Foundation also announced that Bernadette Meehan, previously Executive Director of International Programs at the Foundation, will now serve as Chief International Officer. In addition to overseeing the Obama Foundation Leaders: Africa program, Bernadette will develop and oversee all international programs for the Obama Foundation. "(3)'' is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph "(2)," until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs "(3)" and "(4)," as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2),'' in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs "(4)" and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "Payment Terms" and "Default Terms," granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorizeduse fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User's default, and without further notice, any and all of User's property and interest, described above in paragraph "(2)," formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this "Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use," that Secured Party, again in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate.
