ACTIVIST, LAWYER AND IMMIGRATION LAW SCHOLAR MARIA WOLTJEN TO DELIVER NORTHEASTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY’S COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS Activist, lawyer and immigration law scholar Maria Woltjen will be Northeastern Illinois University’s May 2019 Commencement speaker on May 6 at Credit Union 1 Arena, 525 S. Racine Ave. in Chicago. Woltjen is the founder and Executive Director of The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights at the University of Chicago Law School. The Young Center’s primary work is to advocate for the safety and well-being of unaccompanied and separated immigrant children. Woltjen’s focus is on reforming the immigration system—in which children are treated as adults—into a justice system that recognizes children as children, with rights and protection needs all their own.

NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL: 2018 WAS DEADLIEST YEAR ON RECORD FOR HOT CAR DEATHS Tragically, more children died in hot cars in the United States in 2018 than any other year on record, the National Safety Council recently confirmed. Fifty-one children died last year of pediatric vehicular heatstroke, topping the single-year high of 49 set in 2010.

In response, the Council is releasing a free online training “Children in Hot Cars” that provides vital information about pediatric vehicular heatstroke and outlines how distraction and other behaviors can lead to these unnecessary deaths.

The “Children in Hot Cars” e-learning course provides information about why cars heat up so quickly, why children in particular can succumb to increasing temperatures in cars, and what parents, caregivers and others can do to prevent these needless deaths. UNDERWOOD BILL TO PROTECT PEOPLE WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS ADVANCES OUT OF EDUCATION AND LABOR COMMITTEE The Education and Labor committee recently considered and passed Rep. Lauren Underwood’s legislation, H.R. 1010, which would help protect Americans with pre-existing conditions by overturning an Administration rule that expands short-term, limited duration insurance, commonly known as “junk plans.” The bill has already been considered and passed by the Energy and Commerce Committee.

“No person in this country should be denied insurance coverage as a result of a pre-existing condition. Americans deserve quality and affordable healthcare and I’m proud to see the very first bill I introduced passed by a committee on which I serve,” said Congresswoman Underwood.

In February, Underwood joined members to introduce H.R. 1010 following the Administration’s decision to finalize the Short-Term, Limited Duration Insurance rule, which excludes protections for pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits provided by the Affordable Care Act.

Community Developers And Residents Come Together To Dedicate A New Public Sculpture Continued from page 1

Woodlawn residents recently gathered at the corner of E. 61st Street and S. Cottage Grove Avenue, right in front of the new Jewel-Osco store, to participate in a dedication ceremony for the new 17-foot sculpture known as the Wonder of Woodlawn.

The Wonder of Woodlawn was designed with significant input from residents about what they would be proud to see in their community and features names and symbols that represent the neighborhood’s history and African American history.

During the dedication ceremony, the artist, Bernard Williams, described the sculpture as being inspired by the ferris wheel of the World’s Columbian Exposition, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair, which took place in 1893 and is seen as being a defining moment in the city’s history.

“This resulted from a community process where residents came and shared so much about the history of Woodlawn and things that I didn’t know about, the great leaders,

people, and artists who come from this community. This is why Woodlawn has a chance to have a different fabric, a different culture, and a different streetscape,” said Leon Walker, managing partner of DL3 Realty and one of the sponsors of the new sculpture.

This new sculpture is the crowning jewel on a series of developments that have all recently been completed in this area including the new Jewel-Osco, the Trianon Lofts, and the MetroSquash Center that now occupy three of the four corners at 61st Street and Cottage Grove.

The redevelopment effort in Woodlawn has been largely led by the Preservation Of Affordable Housing (POAH) which is a nonprofit developer whose mission is to preserve, create, and sustain affordable housing stock to support economic security, according to the POAH website.

“What we try to do at POAH is work community first and development second and the community really took this and made it happen and the community has the voice that tells us what direction they want their community to go in,” said Felicia Dawson, vice president

of community partnerships for POAH. Prior to POAH stepping in and taking a lead in Woodlawn, Dr. Leon Finney, Jr. was known for spearheading community development in the neighborhood.

“I’ve seen many things happen in this community throughout the years,” said Finney.

“My longtime friend Bill Eagar from POAH, a great organization, picked up the medal that we carried for over 50 years and became the driving force for this community.”

During the dedication ceremony, several community residents shared their thankfulness for the organizations that are working in the community and their willingness to include residents in the planning process.

“Bernard’s sculpture encapsulates that hope and that feeling of pride in the past and that expectancy about our future,” said Walker. “This is a proud community and neighborhood and all of us here on the development team, with the city, and our partners at POAH put a lot into this and there is no better moment than this when you can deliver on a promise and deliver hope again for this community.”

CMS finalizes policies to bring innovative telehealth benefit to Medicare Advantage The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently finalized policies that will increase plan choices and benefits, including allowing Medicare Advantage plans to include additional telehealth benefits.

These policies continue the agency’s efforts to modernize the Medicare Advantage and Part D programs, unleash innovation and drive competition to improve quality among private Medicare health and drug plans.

“Today’s policies represent a historic step in bringing innovative technology to Medicare beneficiaries,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. “With these new telehealth benefits, Medicare Advantage enrollees will be able to access the latest technology and have greater access to telehealth.

By providing greater flexibility to Medicare Advantage plans, beneficiaries can receive more benefits, at lower costs and better quality.”

The final policies announced recently leverage new authorities provided to CMS in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, which President Trump signed into law last year.

CMS is finalizing changes that would allow Medicare Advantage beneficiaries to access additional telehealth benefits, starting in plan year 2020.

These additional telehealth benefits offer patients the option to receive health care services from places like their homes, rather than requiring them to go to a healthcare facility.

Before this year, seniors in Original Medicare could only receive certain telehealth services if they live in rural areas. Starting this year, Original Medicare began paying for virtual check-ins across the country, meaning patients can connect with their doctors by phone or video chat.

Historically, Medicare Advantage plans have been able to offer more telehealth services, compared to Original Medicare, as part of their supplemental benefits.

But with the final rule, it will be more likely that plans will offer the additional telehealth benefits outside of supplemental benefits, expanding patients’ access to telehealth services from more providers and in more parts of the country than before, whether they live in rural or urban areas.

CMS is also finalizing changes that will make improvements to Medicare Advantage and Part D Star Ratings so that consumers can identify high-value plans. The final rule updates the methodology for calculating Star Ratings, which provide information to consumers on plan

quality. The new Star Ratings methodology will improve the stability and predictability for plans, and will adjust how the ratings are set in the event of extreme and uncontrollable events such as hurricanes.

The final rule will improve the quality of care for beneficiaries dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid who participate in “Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans” or D-SNPs. These beneficiaries usually have complex health needs and if they have a complaint about their healthcare or about access to items and services, they have to work with multiple organizations, one responsible for Medicare benefits and another responsible for Medicaid benefits, in order to file an appeal. The final rule will create one appeals process across Medicare and Medicaid, which will make it easier for enrollees in certain D-SNPs to navigate the healthcare system and have access to high quality services.

The final rule will also require plans to more seamlessly integrate Medicare and Medicaid benefits across the two programs, such as notifying the state Medicaid agency (or its designee) of hospital and skilled nursing facility admissions for certain high-risk beneficiaries, to promote coordination of care for these patients.

The recent announcement builds on the 2020 Rate Announcement and Final Call Letter released earlier that gives Medicare Advantage plans flexibility to offer chronically ill patients a broader range of supplemental benefits that are not necessarily health related and can address social determinants of health.

With these new telehealth and supplemental benefits, Medicare Advantage plans will have the flexibility to provide a historic set of offerings to beneficiaries. Medicare Advantage plans will be able to compete for patients based on their new offerings and overall cost.

CMS is working to update the Medicare Plan Finder with these new choices, so that beneficiaries will be able to see their new choices and benefits and can pick the plans that work best for them.

Student From Wendell Phillips Academy Receives Youth Change Maker Award

Mikva Challenge, a nonprofit youth development organization, recently hosted their 20 Year Anniversary Fundraiser where three young people were honored with a 2019 Youth Change Maker Award for their work and leadership in health, justice and equity, and peace and public safety initiatives.

Trevon Walker, a senior at Wendell Phillips Academy in Bronzeville, was one of those winners and was recognized for co-founding Teens and Cops Together in Chicago Successfully (TACTICS) which works to build positive relationships between police officers and young people in Bronzeville.

Mikva Challenge was founded in 1998 and is a non-partisan, nonprofit organization guided by the notion that the best way to learn democracy

is to do democracy. The mission of Mikva Challenge is to develop youth to be empowered, informed, and active citizens who will promote fairness and equity in their communities, according to information provided by Mikva Challenge.

“Mikva Challenge was founded 20 years ago by Judge Abner Mikva and his wife. It was a way for them to bring voices to the table that were not usually invited and this meant high school aged young people. It started as an elections program and eventually grew into what we are today,” said Karla Castilla, program director of the Democracy in Action program for Mikva Challenge.

While participating in a Mikva Challenge program at his school, Walker and his classmates identified that there was a problem with the relationship between young people and the police in their community.

Together, the class had been working on finding ways to improve the relationships between cops and students not just in their school but in their community as well.

“Trevon’s class was participating in the Issues to Actions Program which is where young people get to select an issue in their community and then go through a process of figuring out how they could fix that problem or create change within that problem,” said Castilla. They focused on creating a curriculum to help police know how

to interact better with young people because they saw that as an issue.”

During the in-class activities, Walker showed great leadership in coming up with solutions to the problem they had identified as a class. He then went on to continue the work himself outside of school and that is what led him to be named a 2019 Youth Change Maker.

“Trevon went on his own and kept working on this issue which is why he was awarded the Youth Change Maker Award because he took it

upon himself to continue the work that he started in the classroom,” said Castilla.

In addition to giving three Youth Change Maker Awards, Jack Marco received a Legacy Award for being at the forefront of founding Mikva Challenge. Berto Aguayo, a Back of the Yards native and former gang member, received an alumnus award for his work as a community organizer and civic engagement strategist.

Walmart expects to spend an estimated $87.5 million this year in Illinois through the remodeling of 16 stores, as well as the launch and continued expansion of several customer-focused innovations.

Walmart will continue to innovate to help customers save time and money by creating a seamless shopping experience that gives them the options to shop when, where and how they want. Examples of customer-focused innovations that will be expanded Walmart expects to spend an estimated this year in Illinois include grocery $87.5 million this year in Illinois through pickup, grocery delivery, and Walmart the remodeling of 16 stores, as well as Pickup Towers, which are 16-feet tall, the launch and continued expansion of high-tech vending machines capable several customer-focused innovations. of fulfilling a customer’s online order in less than a minute once they arrive at the store.

Once the order is ready, customers step up to the Pickup Tower and scan the barcode which is sent to your smartphone to retrieve your item. This year, Walmart plans to add 22 Pickup Towers to stores across Illinois.

The company also recently introduced Walmart Voice Order, which allows customers to simply say “Hey Google, talk to Walmart” and the Google Assistant will add items directly to their Walmart Grocery cart.

Also, a new system in Walmart backrooms – known as FAST – automatically scans and sorts items that come off trucks based on priority and department, allowing associates to spend less time unloading in the backroom and more time on the sales floor with customers. This year, Walmart plans to expand the technology to 50 stores in Illinois.

Other innovations include the autonomous floor scrubber which uses assisted autonomy technology to perform the task of cleaning and scrubbing the concrete floors in stores. The company plans to expand the technology to 52 stores across Illinois this year.

Prince: Three Years Later Fans say their ‘Guitar still Weeps’

Three years ago, the world lost another icon: Prince.

Prince Rogers Nelson, the Minneapolis-born, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoree and multiGrammy-winning artist collapsed in an elevator and died of an accidental prescription drug overdose at his Paisley Park home and studios on April 21, 2016.

He was 57.

Standing at just 5 feet 2 inches, the legendary Purple Rain singer was proof that physical stature is no indication of the impact an individual can have on the entire world. “No other single album influenced me as a teenager and into my adult years more than Purple Rain,” said Michael Stover, president of MTS Management Group and MTS Records.

“The album is sheer perfection, and Prince was a once in a lifetime. I’ve always told people that Prince is the 20th and 21st century equivalent to Mozart or Beethoven,” Stover said.

Prince’s groundbreaking 1984 album Purple Rain sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and produced such era-defining hits as “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and the title track, “Purple Rain.”

The album earned three Grammy Awards and three American Music Awards while the film earned an Oscar for Best Original Song Score, the last to receive the award.

Just two years prior, in 1982, Prince released,“1999,” his fifth studio album which sold more than 6 million copies and was his first to reach the top 10 on the Billboard music charts.

It proved that the crossover star was just getting started.

Born on June 7, 1958 Prince was named after his father, whose stage name was Prince Rogers and who performed with a jazz group called the Prince Rogers Trio, according to the website PrinceVault.com.

In a 1991 interview, Prince’s father, John L. Nelson, said he named his son Prince because “I wanted him to do everything I wanted to do.” With albums like “Prince,” “Controversy,” “1999,” “Purple Rain,” “Sign O’ the Times,” and “Musicology,” Prince released nearly 1,000 songs over his career.

He has won multiple Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. In 2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. That same year, he was named the top male pop artist of the past 25 years and Rolling Stone ranked Prince No. 27 on their list

of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

“The highlights of Prince’s life are so many – how to pick one? From the first time I watched Purple Rain in the theater – where the girls in Boston screamed at the screen every time Prince was in a scene – to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps; to the most amazing Super Bowl halftime performance ever where Prince said, ‘Can you make it rain harder?’ when a concerned producer checked in with him before he was supposed to go on; his life was one of brilliance that inspires us to this day,” recalled Terence O’Toole Murnin, a Prince fan who lives in Arizona.

Another fan, Nicholas Wolaver, attended what would be Prince’s final concert series in Atlanta in 2016. It was following that show that a plane carrying the superstar was forced into an emergency landing because Prince needed immediate medical attention for an apparent overdose.

Doctors revived Prince and less than a week later as a private doctor was arriving at Paisley Park to help the singer with addiction, he was dead.

“I started listening to Prince in the fourth grade with Little Red Corvette and other pre-Purple Rain hits on the radio,” Wolaver said.

“Later my college journey took me to Minnesota where the local scene was much more informative about Prince’s impact there. I attended three of his concerts in Atlanta, including an arena show, an intimate performance with only a few hundred people and finally that penultimate concert at The Fox Theatre,” Wolaver said.

“For the arena and intimate show, he was all about the guitar, while the piano was the centerpiece for the final events – he rocked any instrument he touched. I still have a recording from that penultimate concert on my phone and play it often and reflect on the life he led and music he created.

He’s greatly missed,” he said.

For Ginna Currie of New York, she said she’s thankful that famed director Spike Lee throws an annual block party in Brooklyn in memory of Prince.

“I have been a Prince fan since 1979’s ‘I Wanna Be Your Lover,’” Currie said.

“It is still hard to comprehend that there will be no more Prince concerts to attend. Every couple of years Prince was in the New York metro area on tour,” Currie said.

“He was the consummate entertainer with singing, dancing and playing guitar, piano, drums. I listen to his music almost every day and I just wish [Prince’s] family would release the music inside the vault,” she said.

Chicago Community Loan Fund Hosts Community Development Centered Workshops

The Chicago Community Loan Fund recently announced that it will host a series of workshops to help both established and potential community developers be both successful and socially impactful. The workshops will compile development assistance, sustainability resources, and customized training opportunities for developers and their up-and-coming community projects.

The Chicago Community Loan Fund is a nonprofit community development financial institution that was designed to provide economic opportunities that will strengthen emerging communities across Chicago.

“There are folks in the community that are interested in doing some development and they are trying to figure out how they can be an entrepreneur in their community. I’ve found that it’s

good for people to learn how they can work in their community,” said Taft West, vice president of Technical Assistance and Sustainability at the Chicago Community Loan Fund.

On April 18, there will be a Social Enterprise workshop at the Illinois College of Optometry, 3241 S. Michigan Ave., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the attendance fee is $25. On May 15, there will be a Regulatory Requirements workshop at the Chicago Community Loan Fund office, 29 E. Madison St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. also for $25.

“We have one workshop coming up in April about social enterprise because sometimes doing good in the neighborhood doesn’t pay good and you have got to figure out how to do what you want, how to do it right, and how to keep the lights on,” said West.

The workshops last for about two hours and include a variety of industry

experts who lead participants through activities and there is a significant amount of time that is dedicated to questions and answers with the experts.

After the workshops, participants are asked to fill out a short survey about the value of the information that they received and what other topics they would like to see covered. This is how the Chicago Community Loan Fund makes sure it’s providing the learning opportunities that community developers want and need.

“We looked at the landscape around what we want to do, which is to uplift the underserved community, and came up with a number of things that people who are developers or want to be developers are interested in. Beyond that, I do a little questionnaire during each workshop to learn what people’s hot button issues are and what they are interested in so that we can continue to
