NEW REPORT: PATIENTS PAY THE PRICE WITH PROLIFERATION OF SUBSTANDARD HEALTH PLANS A new report published by 30 patient organizations shows the significant risks patients face when they enroll in non-compliant and substandard health insurance products, and details ways state and federal lawmakers can help protect these vulnerable consumers.

The report, “Under-Covered: How ‘Insurance-Like’ Products Are Leaving Patients Exposed,” issued by a coalition representing millions of people with pre-existing conditions, details eight different types of “non-compliant plans” that do not adhere to Affordable Care Act (ACA) consumer protections like coverage for pre-existing conditions, elimination of annual and lifetime coverage limits, and coverage for essential health benefits.

The plans have proliferated in recent years, and in many cases, are marketed to consumers who don’t fully understand what they’re purchasing. As a result, patients are often vulnerable to exorbitant medical bills. This report serves as a warning to consumers to avoid these plans – and a call to action to lawmakers.

EEOC CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AGAINST ASIAN AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS IN THE UNITED STATES The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) unanimously approved a resolution condemning the recent violence, harassment, and acts of bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The resolution reaffirms the Commission’s commitment to combat all forms of harassment and discrimination against members of AAPI communities, and to ensure equal opportunity, inclusion, and dignity for all in the workplace.

“The Commission condemns the recent violence and discrimination against AAPI persons in the strongest possible terms,” said EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows.

“Hatred, xenophobia, and racism violate our nation’s core principles. The Commission stands in solidarity with the victims, their families, and AAPI communities across the nation, and we pledge to work together to address harassment, bias, and discrimination in the workplace.”

The EEOC advances equal opportunity in the workplace by enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination.

Illinois State Representative Kam Buckner represents the 26th District, which encompasses South Chicago, South Shore, Woodlawn, Greater Grand Crossing, Bronzeville, Hyde Park and all the way up to Streeterville and the Gold Coast. It is one of the most racially and socioeconomically diverse districts in the state of Illinois.

Buckner grew up in Roseland and is a product of the Chicago Public School system. He worked in politics, and went to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where he received his undergraduate degree.

He’s also a graduate of DePaul University where he received his Juris Doctor degree.

“For the last two and a half years, I’ve been the State Representative for the 26th District and its been [t]he job of a lifetime for me,” Buckner said.

As a young man growing up in Chicago, Buckner saw the reverence his parents and grandmother had for the late Mayor Harold Washington.

“Seeing my grandmother talk about him with such bellowing pride, it really made me start thinking about what politics was and who politicians were and how they added to the fabric of our society,” he said. “The more I learned and the more I read up and studied on public service, it really pushed me in that direction.”

Buckner added, his parents taught him and his siblings that “public service is the rent you pay to live on earth.” He said it manifests itself in different ways, depending on what a person’s passion is. He said he always knew he would be working in public service, but he did not know it would be in politics, but he is happy that it is.

Buckner said the neighborhoods he represents have nuanced and diverse neighborhoods, all in the city of Chicago. Each neighborhood is distinct in its own right, although they are 6 miles apart. One distinction is life expectancy between those neighborhoods.

“Washington Park has a life expectancy that is 18 ½ years lower than Streeterville.

These are two neighborhoods in the same city, two neighborhoods in the same state rep. district. So, it’s up to me to continue to find ways to stand up and to highlight and to strengthen places like Streeterville and River North, but to also make sure places like Washington Park and Bronzeville and Greater Grand Crossing have the opportunities to live the quality of life that their neighbors do to the North of them,” he said.

Buckner worked in New Orleans for former Mayor Mitch Landrieu. He said Chicago and New Orleans have a lot in common.

They’re both tribal, neighborhood driven cities. He said Chicago people have felt like neighborhoods have been disinvested or haven’t received help or resources needed.

“We walk around with a certain swagger about ourselves because it’s forced us to be self-reliant and self-sufficient. People in New Orleans have a similar aura about themselves. And, you can’t blame them when you look at footage from August 2005, when there were thousands of our brothers and sisters on top of the roofs of their homes, waiting for help from local and federal government to come save them from a disaster that we knew was coming. So, I think that really engenders a certain kind of toughness when it comes to city certain politics,” he said.

Buckner added, there is something special about community driven politics in Chicago and New Orleans. He said Wash-

ington, DC politics is more top down.

Buckner, who is the chair of the Illinois House Black Caucus, said he is extremely proud of the work done by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus to pass the bills that were meant to end systemic racism. He said it will really show the rest of the country what can be done. He talked about George Floyd, Rekia Boyd and Laquan McDonald.

“The question always was, how do we go from protest to progress. How do we take these very unfortunate and egregious incidents and turn them into actionable change for our people. And, my colleagues and I, in the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, were able to do that. And, it’s really a testament to the hard work of each member of the Caucus and us really taking an opportunity to make sure that the work that we’re doing is mirroring what our communities need,” he said. Buckner said the legislation passed, which includes criminal legal reform, violence reduction and police accountability, education and workforce development, economic access, equity and opportunity as well as healthcare and human services, is just the beginning of moving toward equity for Black people in Illinois. He said these laws are every important.

“We, for a long time, have been told, laws like the ones that we passed, were too provocative, they were too progressive, they were too radical and that we should wait our turn and wait for things to get better.

And, we noticed things weren’t going to change by osmosis. That we actually had to put the work in,” he said. “What we also know is that the Calvary is not coming. The people who are going to save Chicago, save Illinois, are already here. What we have to do is give voice to these folks and give these folks the resources they need.”

Rush, Bacon Introduce Legislation To Honor Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley With Congressional Gold Medal U.S. Representatives Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) and Don Bacon (R-Neb.) introduced H.R. 2252, legislation that would award a Congressional Gold Medal to Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till and a tireless fighter for civil rights and racial justice.

The Congressional Gold Medal is awarded as a national acknowledgment of renowned persons, institutions, or events. Companion legislation was introduced in the Senate in February

by U.S. Senators Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.).

“When the photo from Emmett Till’s funeral ran in Jet, I will never forget how my mother gathered us around the coffee table and told us ‘That’s why I brought my boys out of the South.’ Mamie Till-Mobley’s courageous decision to hold an open-casket funeral for her son forced America to confront the brutal truth of racism, galvanized the civil rights movement, and helped put America on the path to becoming a fairer and more just country,”

said Rush. “I thank Representative Bacon for joining me in this effort in supporting Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley’s legacy.”

“It is fitting that this medal be commissioned so our nation recognizes the horrendous lynching of Emmet Till and the legacy made by his mother Mamie Till-Mobley, in her noble quest for justice for her son. Mamie Till-Mobley’s legacy is also felt through the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act, which allowed the reopening of cold cases against individuals who committed heinous, racially motivated attacks prior to 1980.

The legislation was first signed into law in 2008 and reauthorized in 2016.

COMMENTARY: Trying to rewrite the January 6th coup attempt

There is something amazing going on in Republican Party circles. If I did not know better, I would assume that I was watching a television comedy. Segments of the Republican Party are attempting to tell us that the January 6th coup attempt did not actually happen. Instead, they argue, what we SAW on television was allegedly orchestrated

by Antifa and the Black Lives Matter movement.

There are certain noteworthy things about this argument, the most important being that it is not based on any facts.

None. The second is that this line of argument started as soon as the coup attempt had ended. Right-wingers claimed that it was a so-called false flag operation that was conducted by the political Left in order to delegitimize the political Right.

There are many problems with this line of thinking, not the least being that many of the alleged perpetrators of the 1/6 coup attempt were avowed right-wingers who conducted this operation in the full view of video.

So, what is going on? Simply put, the pro-fascist elements in the Republican Party are attempting to convince a critical mass of the public that what they saw… they did not really see. This is not even equivalent to a magician’s trick with the sleight of hand. They are going one step further and asserting that what all of us saw on television or the web, for which many people have been arrested and charged, did not happen or, if it did, it was really conducted by the political Left.

It is important to note that both Antifa and the Black

Lives Matter movement are networks, at best. There is no one organization called “Antifa,” for instance, and there are many organizations that operate under the banner of Black Lives Matter. Therefore, the right-wing assertions of an Antifa and BLM conspiracy would not make sense in the best of all possible worlds. But more importantly, there is no evidence to back up such assertions!

The pro-fascist element within the Republican Party is attempting several things at the same time. First, to lay the basis for further repression of anti-fascist and anti-racist forces. This is part of the motivation behind an increase in anti-terrorism legislation in various states when the government already has the authority to prosecute terrorists.

Second, the pro-fascist element in the Republican Party is trying to obscure both the reality of January 6th but also the antics of Trump. They are simply trying to deny that there was a coup attempt where people were injured and/or lost their lives.

There is a famous term for what the pro-fascist element is doing. It comes from an iconic film. The term is “gas lighting,” i.e., to lead people to believe that what they are actually experiencing or seeing is not really happening.

We cannot afford to ignore this. Precisely for these reasons, the fascists and their collaborators need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, thereby demonstrating the danger that they pose to any democratic political system. This is no comedy.

American workers have seen their real earnings grow by less than 10% over the last two decades, with a growing racial gap where gains by Black workers are half that of their White counterparts, according to new earnings data released by the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity (LISEP).

LISEP recently launched a new measure of economic performance called the True Weekly Earnings (TWE) report, which is designed to provide a clearer picture of worker earnings than the Median Weekly Earnings Report released quarterly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Unlike the BLS report, LISEP includes all members of the workforce – including unemployed and part-time workers – to arrive at a more realistic measure of worker median earnings and their growth over time.

“While the Bureau of Labor Statistics does an excellent job of collecting accurate and reliable data, the presentation of its headline number was designed for an era long passed, not for the service-driven, gig-based employment of today,” said LISEP Chairman Gene Ludwig. “By bringing the analysis of earnings data into the 21st century, we hope to provide policymakers with a more realistic picture of the status of the American worker.”

Ludwig added that because the BLS uses the median weekly earnings of only full-time wage earners, the BLS report is biased upward during recessionary times, when low- and moderate-income earners lose their jobs or have their hours reduced. LISEP’s TWE report for the fourth quarter of 2020 shows a median weekly wage of $797, or $41,444 annually.

This is about 20% lower than the BLS reported rate of $984 a week ($51,168 annualized).

In addition, the LISEP analysis revealed that the BLS report overstates labor earnings over time, particularly during economic downturns. In the last 20 years, the BLS report has overstated the growth of earnings by more than one-third compared to the LISEP data, 13% versus 9%. During the 2008 and 2020 recessions, BLS actually reported increases in median earnings of about 5% and 7%, respectively. In contrast, LISEP’s TWE shows declines of 2% for both time periods – a more accurate reflection of what workers

were experiencing at the time.

Some of the widest disparities, though, between the LISEP and BLS data are reflected in the demographic analysis. The BLS reports that since 2000, Black workers have seen their earnings grow roughly equivalent to that of White workers, but the LISEP analysis shows that White earnings have grown more than twice that of Black workers – 16.2% versus 7.9%. In 2000, Black workers earned 77% of their White counterparts; in 2020 that has fallen to 72%, according to LISEP. Meanwhile, LISEP reports that earnings growth has failed to keep up with other common measures of economic growth.

Since 2000, GDP (inflation adjusted) has increased by 45.3% -- five times faster than the LISEP median earnings measure. Since 2001 (earliest year reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis), corporate profits of domestic corporations (inflation adjusted) have increased by 119% -- versus a 9% increase in median earnings, as per LISEP’s measure.

“These data all point to an economic situation that is unsustainable,” Ludwig said. “A workforce that is continually marginalized through meager increases in compensation, even while contributing to overall economic growth through increased productivity, will eventually become disaffected.

“This, coupled with growing racial and gender inequality, can eventually give rise to societal issues beyond economics. It is our hope that policymakers will take a look at this new way of analyzing traditional data, and apply it to effect positive change throughout the national economy.”

LISEP will continue to issue the TWE quarterly following the release of the BLS Median Weekly Earnings report, and will make the TWE rate, along with supporting data and demographic analysis, available on the LISEP website.

This is the second revised economic indicator LISEP has launched in the past year. In October 2020, LISEP launched its first monthly True Rate of Unemployment (TRU) report to measure the nation’s percentage of functionally unemployed, defined as those seeking full-time work but are unable to secure a position that pays above the poverty level. SBA Administrator Comments On Biden Signing PPP Extension Act of 2021 President Joe Biden recently signed the PPP Extension Act of 2021 into law, extending the Paycheck Protection Program an additional two months to May 31, 2021, and then providing an additional 30-day period for the SBA to process applications that are still pending.

2021 Global Scientific Summit on COVID-19 Takes Place In April The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) – together with the world’s largest cruise company, Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/ LSE: CCL;NYSE: CUK), and the leading global hospitality company Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HLT) – have announced the 2021 Global Scientific Summit on COVID-19.

Help Wanted: Why Women Should Consider Careers in Manufacturing

Women represent a vast, untapped talent pool for the manufacturing industry.

In 2016, women made up 47 percent of the American labor force, but only 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce, according to a survey conducted by The Manufacturing Institute, APICS and Deloitte.

“Many women don’t realize the possibilities for personal and professional satisfaction and a stable career in the manufacturing industry,” says Julie Davis, Association of Equipment Manufacturing director of workforce development. “Women who need to reposition their post COVID-19 careers should step forward into manufacturing.”

Reasons for women to consider a career in manufacturing include: - Financial: Wages for women in manufacturing tend to exceed those paid in traditional female-filled positions.

- Educational: Money is available from many businesses for retraining women for manufacturing jobs. Given

the job losses many women have experienced in industries hurt by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, such as the restaurant, hospitality, and other service industries, the manufacturing industry offers an opportunity to learn new skills and embark on a new and sustainable career path.

- Practical. Many manufacturing jobs that used to demand more in terms of size and strength no longer apply; the adoption of technology means new, high-tech jobs that level the playing field for male and female employees.

- Inclusive. The manufacturing industry is committed to diversity and inclusion. For example, safety equipment is now available in women’s sizes to reflect the changing demographics of the industry and desire to reach out to women about the benefits of manufacturing careers. The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) recently announced the creation of an expansive content creation, talent development and partnership platform that enables and advocates for increased inclusion of Black creators across the advertising, film and television industries. Titled “Widen The Screen,” it will include new films and initiatives that feature more diverse storytellers, combat bias against all people fueled by misrepresentation, increase investment in Black-owned and operated media and employ more diverse creators in a way that improves their trajectory for long-term success.

The anthem film “Widen The Screen” premiered during the 2021 NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, March 27 with a call to action to portray a more holistic view of Black life – one that is layered, beautiful and dynamic – not one that simply reinforces commonly told stereotypes.

The film, created and produced by a team of largely Black creators in collaboration with Grey, and narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali, ends with the line “Let’s widen the screen to widen our view” and challenges the expectations viewers have about the characters and stories often played

by Black actors – fueled by a limited view of Black Life on screen.

P&G also announced support for efforts to increase the number of Black creators entering the industry through programs like the Marcus Graham Project and the One Club for Creativity’s One School Initiative; continued support of critical talent development initiatives like ADCOLOR; and increasing investment in a broad range of Black owned and operated companies and media platforms.

Tips to Keep Kids’ Rooms Clean and Organized

(StatePoint) For the past year, many of us have lived, played, worked and gone to school right at home, making clutter inevitable – especially when it comes to kids’ bedrooms and playrooms.

No matter how many times parents tell their children to clean their rooms, the collection of clothes, schoolwork and toys seems to build endlessly. Take charge of the mess with these tips to create a space that’s fun and functional for kids of all ages.

1. Prioritize Belongings. Start by considering what needs to go, what can stay and how much storage space you have available. Make it a family project by working with your kids to identify which items they love most and which things they could do without. Once you know what will be kept, prioritize space accordingly, keeping beloved items easily accessible.

2. Organize the Stuff. Find everything a home. Bins and baskets are ideal for small toys and games with tiny pieces, while drawers and shelves are perfect for larger items. For excess items, especially young children’s toys, use clear bins to store them in closets or under beds. Not only does this help tidy the room, but it can also make old things appear new again when they are pulled out of storage.

3. Create Labels. Getting belongings organized is one thing, but keeping them that way is another. A great way to ensure your hard work doesn’t go to waste is to label the bins or baskets. Labels make things easy to find when you need them and keep items organized when cleaning up.
