NEWS briefly EDUCATION FTC RETURNS MORE THAN $3.1 MILLION TO VICTIMS OF STUDENT LOAN DEBT RELIEF AND CREDIT REPAIR SCHEME The Federal Trade Commission is mailing checks totaling more than $3.1 million to consumers who were victims of a student loan debt relief and credit repair scheme. Strategic Student Solutions (also doing business under other names) and its owner, Dave Green, settled FTC allegations that they charged consumers illegal upfront fees and falsely promised to reduce their student loan debt or monthly payments by enrolling them in student loan forgiveness or other programs.

The FTC also alleged that the defendants falsely promised to apply monthly payments to consumers’ student loans and to improve their credit scores and histories.

The FTC never requires people to pay money or provide account information to cash a refund check. If recipients have questions about the refunds, they should contact the FTC’s refund administrator, JND Legal Administration, at 1-888-304-0184.

BUSINESSES MOVE TO FILL GAPS IN THE MEDICAL SUPPLY CHAIN HanesBrands has joined a cooperative consortium of other major apparel manufacturers that are dedicating manufacturing capacity to meet the U.S need for masks during the COVID-19 crisis.

The company is producing cotton masks, approved by the FDA, for use when N-95 masks are not required or available.

The University of Chicago is doing its part to support the needs of residents on the South Side during COVID-19.

One of three measures the university launched recently in March involves providing meal preparation and delivery to South Side residents, in partnership with Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Derek Douglas is the vice president for civic engagement for the University of Chicago. He said the idea to prepare and serve meals comes from the University of Chicago’s active partnerships in the community.

“We have a pretty significant presence in terms of civic engagement, programming and effort. And so, as a result of that, we have good relationships with the alderman and a lot of organizations.

And, all of that enabled us to have a pretty good sense of what some of the needs are, the most pressing and acute needs in the community,” he said.

“And, when COVID-19 was hitting the university, we were seeing the impact, we were feeling it, but we knew that our community around us was feeling it very heavily, so we wanted to do some things to try to help out in ways that we can leverage what we can do.”

Douglas said one of the things they heard was the whole issue around food security and the need for people to have meals and food. Because the campus was closed and students were sent home, the dining halls were empty.

“It provided the infrastructure that we could use to provide meals, and instead of serving students, have a meal provided to the community. So, we looked at it, how it could be done, what we could produce,” he said.

The university reached out to the city to get connected to their food programs and got connected with the Greater Chicago Food Depository. And, they decided to do the partnership.

The university will use on-campus dining facilities to prepare meals in various locations to nine communities on the South Side including: Douglas, Grand Boulevard, Grand Crossing, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, South Shore, Washington Park and Woodlawn. The university will provide 3,000 meals a day, seven days a week, through June 12.

Douglas said it wasn’t something the university was asked to do, it was something they came up with internally.

“We view ourselves as a citizen of the South Side of Chicago. This community is our community,” he said. “A third of our employees that work at the university live on the South Side. And so, we’re always trying to think about things we can do, ways in which we could support the community.”

Douglas said as the largest anchor institution on the South Side of the city, it was clear the university had to figure out what

“I think there’s been a tremendous amount of appreciation and it kind of validates the need that’s out there. I think it’s allowed us to create and develop new partnerships through the Greater Chicago Food Depository,” he said. “In a lot of ways, doing this built on a foundation of relationships we’ve been working very hard to develop over many years. But, it’s helping to even strengthen and deepen those further. And, I think hopefully, demonstrating for folks how committed the university is to being a good partner of the South Side and the city more broadly.”

In addition to the meal preparation, the university is supporting small businesses and their employees through a grant program, as well as supporting nonprofits with bridge funding.

Research Findings Presented During National Kidney Foundation’s Annual Spring Clinical Meetings

Once you’ve found the right property, learn what you can expect ahead of the actual purchase and closing.

You’ve reviewed your spending plan, been preapproved for a mortgage, and made an offer on the home of your dreams. Now, it’s time to close — the final steps before transferring of the property deed to your name after satisfying all the conditions of the purchase contract.

Here are some things to consider as you finalize your purchase.

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) showcased three late-breaking studies to kidney professionals this week during their annual Spring Clinical Meetings, which were held this year as a live-virtual gathering due to the COVID-19 crisis.

“These three studies, taken together, exemplify the multidisciplinary, multistakeholder approach that makes our Spring Clinical Meetings unique,” said Kerry Willis PhD, NKF chief scientific officer.

“This diversity in research subjects is what’s needed to improve the outcomes that matter most to people with kidney disease.”

Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and family history.

People of African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander descent are at increased risk for developing the disease.

African Americans are 3 times more likely than Whites, and Hispanics are nearly 1.5 times more likely than non-Hispanics to develop end-stage renal disease (kidney failure).

What should happen leading up to the purchase? l Schedule a home inspection and appraisal. This is something your lender might require you to do before providing a mortgage, depending on the state you live in. Some lenders want to make sure the home is worth the purchase price and that there isn’t any structural issue that may cause problems, which is also in your own interests. l Don’t open any new accounts during this crucial time, because it could impact your financing if your credit takes a hit. Opening a new account is a hard inquiry on your credit, causing a dip in your score.

It may also lower the average age of all your accounts. If you need help reading your credit report, take a look at the resources on the Hands on Banking® website.

Prepare your documents for the closing Double-check that you have everything your lender asked for, or else the completion of your loan and purchase may be postponed: l About three days before closing, you’ll likely receive closing documents. This package will include copies of everything you’ve turned in to your lender, as well as additional documents and paperwork you should read over. l Review the closing documents to understand all the terms of financing, and the responsibilities of the lender, seller, and buyer. Take note of what you can do if your lender or seller does anything you haven’t agreed to, and don’t sign documents without fully understanding them. l Also prepare your: l Required documents, which typically include a government-issued photo ID, copy of the contract, home inspection reports, and proof of homeowners insurance. l Banking paperwork laying out

What are some things to expect at closing?

Multiple parties will be present at the closing, such as: l Your and the seller’s real estate agent. The real estate agents may choose to attend to ensure the closing transaction goes through. l An escrow company. Depending on your location, an escrow officer may need to be present to handle funds that need to be exchanged. l Your attorney and/or the seller’s attorney. In some states, an attorney may need to be present to complete the legal transfer of the title. l Your lender. Your lender may be present to ensure the transaction goes smoothly.

Here are some examples of items you may consider reviewing before you close: l With your lender, confirm if anything has changed since approval, such as your annual percentage rate (APR) — i.e., your interest rate — or any other term. l With the seller, confirm: l Copies of repair receipts l Utility company information l Trash and recycling collection days

When you’re ready, you and the seller will sign off on the purchase documents, and you will sign off on the loan documents. You may be required to wire your funds, or you may need to bring in a cashier’s check for closing costs.

After the closing documents are completed and the funds have been transferred, you’ll receive the keys to your new home.

Nasdaq Pledges Business and Philanthropic Support in Response to COVID-19

Wells Fargo Invests $1M in SaverLife and Neighborhood Trust Financial Partners to Disperse Financial Aid to Small Businesses Affected by COVID-19

The Wells Fargo grant will provide for $500 cash boosts coupled with the financial guidance needed to navigate tough financial choices. The financial aid will be available to 1,000 small business owners and their employees identified in partnership with nonprofit small business lender Opportunity Fund.

Top Ways to Lighten Up Your Home Workspace (StatePoint) Many people have found themselves working from home. Whether setting up shop at the kitchen table or creating a complete home office, here are simple hacks to make your new work environment comfortable and productive.

“No matter which room becomes your workspace, proper lighting plays a key role in avoiding fatigue, eye strain and other discomforts,” said Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications, Progress Lighting.

Begin by defining your workspace. Setting up on the kitchen or dining table can work -- temporarily. The upside is that it’s quick and easy. But these rooms are typically high-traffic areas, leading to distractions. Plus, you might have to pack up work at mealtimes. Instead, re-purpose a small table and chair and place it in an out-of-the-way spot, such as a stairwell or bedroom corner.

Next, think about lighting. Layering light is a basic technique that should be used in every room, but especially home offices.

“Balance the lighting for different times of day. Natural light for day, layered light for afternoon and task lighting at night,” recommends Piper Stromatt, lead designer and partner for Curate Custom Homes. “There are three layers of light to consider: ambient or general light, task lighting and decorative or accent lighting.”

Select a location with a good source of ambient light. Natural light is ideal: it diffuses throughout the space, bouncing off walls and ceilings to cut down on glare that can reflect on the computer monitor and the shiny desk surface.

“When selecting ambient light sources, the goal is to illuminate the entire space without creating undue glare and contrast, which can lead to headaches and eye strain,” says Kis. “If possible, avoid using overhead ceiling fixtures as the primary source of lighting. If that’s the only option, use a dimmer switch to vary light levels as needed.”

Positioning your workspace correctly also helps. For rooms with natural light, place your desk perpendicular to the window, ideally facing north or south so that sunlight doesn’t cast shadows at certain times of the day. If an overhead fixture is the only light source, situate your workstation so that the light shines from behind it.

“Make sure your home office suits your performance under particular lighting conditions,” says Stromatt, who recommends the following tips: • Don’t set your monitor in front of the window; the bright background light shining behind the screen causes eye strain.

• Place your chair at least arm’s length from the screen so that it can be seen without reading glasses or squinting.

• Add LED tape lighting behind your monitor or under a desk for diffused light.

• Use solar shades to soften lighting and lessen heat.

After setting up a glare-free workstation, add task lighting. Use dedicated light sources such as desk lamps for tasks like paperwork and filing. Place direct task lights on the opposite side of the hand you write with to avoid casting shadows onto your work.

Finally, add accent lighting for visual appeal. Frame your workspace with desk lamps or install a permanent fixture on a dimmer switch, such as a pendant hung directly over the desk. Wall sconces can throw light on decorative objects in the room.
