NEWS briefly EDUCATION MILTON JONES OF PEACHTREE PROVIDENCE PARTNERS NAMED CHAIR OF UNCF BOARD Atlanta business and civic leader Milton H. Jones, Jr. has been elected chair of the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Board of Directors, becoming the first African American to hold that position.

Jones succeeds William F. Stasior, Sr., retired chairman and CEO of Booz Allen Hamilton, who served as UNCF’s Chair for 11 years. Former Chairs of the UNCF board include: John D. Rockefeller, III; former Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo’s International Food and Beverage Division Michael H. Jordan and former Revlon President and CEO Jack Stahl.

EXPOSURE TO FLAME RETARDANTS EARLY IN PREGNANCY LINKED TO PREMATURE BIRTH Expectant women are more likely to give birth early if they have high blood levels of a chemical used in flame retardants compared with those who have limited exposure, a new study finds.

These polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used in the manufacture of furniture, carpeting, and other products to reduce flammability. Previous studies have found that the substances can leach into household dust and build up in the body where they may interfere with the thyroid, an organ that secretes brain-developing hormones. Childhood exposure to PBDEs has been linked to learning disabilities, autistic symptoms, and behavioral issues, among other developmental problems.

IMMIGRANT JUSTICE CORPS ANNOUNCES SEVENTH CLASS OF JUSTICE FELLOWS Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC), the country’s first fellowship program wholly dedicated to meeting immigrants’ need for high-quality legal assistance, recently announced its seventh class of Justice Fellows. Selected for their compassion, intellect, and commitment to immigrants’ rights, the 2021 Justice Fellows will bring their many skills to bear on the acute representation crisis in immigration.

Twenty-eight graduates from top law schools and with impressive experience from around the country were chosen for the prestigious Fellowship at IJC. The Class of 2021 Justice Fellows come to IJC with stellar backgrounds, including education in the nation’s most well-regarded immigration law programs and years of cumulative experience as client advocates.

The Fellows will serve for two years as staff attorneys at strategically selected legal services agencies and community-based organizations across the country, providing legal assistance to low-income immigrants in an array of immigration matters including deportation defense and affirmative applications for those fleeing persecution.

Initiative gives young people in foster care dignity Continued from page 1

When S. Maria White found out that when children who age out of the foster care system at 18 years old, are given a garbage bag for their belongings, she knew she had to do something. So, she started the Roll Out In Style Suitcase Initiative to collect suitcases for those young people.

White said she was inspired by reading a Facebook post from a friend in Tampa, who was collecting suitcases to give to young people there. “These are children, and I couldn’t imagine having their life,” she said.

White said it started her on a personal journey to birth the non-profit in late January. She said she wanted to make sure no child left the state with a black garbage bag.

She said it was the wrong kind of message to give to a young person who had already been through so much in their lives.

“My goal is to make sure that children leave the state of Illinois with more dignity, more empowerment,” she said.

Every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., White collects suitcases at an Aaron Bros. storage facility, located at 4030 S. Michigan Ave. White also will host suitcase collection events on the West side and in the South Suburbs.

White said, because of COVID-19, she has not been able to meet with the young people she has collected suitcases for. She said she would like to have a ceremony with those young people and bring in inspirational speakers who have gone through the foster care system to impart some wisdom to them.

Part of the non-profit is to focus on awareness, empowerment, education and entrepreneurship. White describes herself as a “passionpreneur,” creating projects that she was passionate about. She said it gave her a sense of empowerment. She will also be distributing scholarships.

“I believe that human kindness is more kind than anything, so it doesn’t surprise me that people are taking this seriously and are coming out and being really supportive.

What’s surprising me is the magnitude,” she said.

White said the state gives her their numbers each month and she supplies those bags. She said there are plans to collect and donate in other places.

White said people have been donating their talents to her non-profit. She is looking for people with special skills who want to volunteer.

“You don’t have to donate a suitcase, you can donate cash, you don’t have to donate cash, you can donate your time, or you can just tell people,” she said. “Most people I talk to did not know this type of thing happens.”

McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden Mentors Program Speeds Up as Bubba Wallace Comes on Board McDonald’s Black & Positively Golden Mentors program is driving into a new industry – the world of competitive racing – in the fourth episode of its digital content series featuring NASCAR driver and advocate Bubba Wallace.

During the episode, Wallace mentors 18-year-old emerging NASCAR/Rev Racing driver Rajah Caruth, sharing advice about navigating adversity as the lone Black driver in the auto racing sport, industry insights and more. CVS Health Now Offering COVID-19 Vaccines in 29 States CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) has nearly doubled the number of states where select CVS Pharmacy locations are offering COVID-19 vaccines to eligible populations through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program (FRPP). The company is now administering vaccines in nearly 1,200 stores across 29 states and Puerto Rico including: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York (now including New York City), Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania (now including Philadelphia), Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia.

“We’re increasing the number of active stores and expanding to additional states as fast as supply allows, with the capacity to administer 20 – 25 million shots per month,” said Karen S. Lynch, president and chief executive officer, CVS Health. “We’re also focused on priority populations, including vulnerable communities disproportionately impacted by the pandemic as well as teachers and school support staff.”

On March 2, the Biden Administration announced that for the month of March, FRPP participants would prioritize vaccinating pre-K through 12 educators and staff and child care workers. From March 3 to March 10, this population accounted for more than 30 percent of COVID-19 vaccine appointments at CVS Pharmacy locations.

Long-term care vaccination effort a success Since CVS Health began administering COVID-19 vaccine doses to residents and staff at over 40,000 long-term care facilities across the country in late December, there has been a dramatic drop in COVID-19 cases and deaths. In fact, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data, between December 20 and February 21 there has been a 94 percent decrease in COVID-19 cases, and an 84 percent decrease in COVID-19 deaths.

Per the company’s publicly available data, CVS Pharmacy teams have completed second doses at all skilled nursing facilities, and third and final visits are 90 percent complete. Second doses at assisted living and other facilities are 91 percent complete, with more than half of third and final visits complete. CVS Health has administered nearly 4.5 million COVID-19 vaccine doses through the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program.

He also noted the importance of applying an appropriate framework to an interrogation of the issues at hand: including how any discussion about the violence waged against Black communities from banking institutions and other systemic barriers

Rashad stated: “This conversation about how we move forward, about how we invest, the enforcement, and how we have diversity in the enforcement, is critical to getting results that provide opportunity for everyone. enforcement to move this country forward?”

likely to get a loan from the bank,’ rather than, ‘Banks are less likely to give loans to Black people.’ Thereby concentrating on what’s wrong with Black people rather than dealing with the structural challenges that exist inside of our banks.”

Dove And The CROWN Coalition Celebrate Victory The CROWN Coalition recently announced that Connecticut is the first state in 2021 and eighth state to pass and enact The CROWN Act. The CROWN Act – which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, is legislation that extends statutory protection to traits historically associated with race, such as hair texture and/or protective styles in the workplace and schools.

The Crown Coalition is the official national supporter of The CROWN Act movement;

an alliance cofounded by Dove, National Urban League, Western Center on Law & Poverty and Color Of Change, with support from now over 80 organizations.

NEWS Public Engagement Phase of “Chicago Monuments and Public Art Project” lets Chicagoans join the conversation about monumental sculptures, artworks and commemorative plaques The City of Chicago, in partnership with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), Chicago Park District (Parks) and Chicago Public Schools (CPS), recently launched the Chicago Monuments Project website at chicagomonuments.org, which kicked off the public engagement phase of the Chicago Monuments Project that will conclude in April. The new website identifies monumental sculptures, artworks and commemorative plaques on the public way and in Chicago parks selected by the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee for further review. Chicagoans can join the conversation by submitting feedback through the website, virtual events and one-onone conversations.

“This project is a powerful opportunity for us to come together as a city to assess the many monuments and memorials across our neighborhoods and communities—to face our history and what and how we memorialize that history,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “Given the past year and in particular the past summer that made clear history isn’t past, it is essential that residents are a part of this conversation. This project is about more than a single statue or

mural, it’s about channeling our city’s dynamic civic energy to permanently memorialize our shared values, history and heritage as Chicagoans in an open and democratic way.”

The Chicago Monuments Project is the city’s first effort to grapple with the often unacknowledged – or forgotten – history associated with the city’s various municipal art collections and provides a vehicle to address the hard truths of Chicago’s racial history, confront the ways in which that history has and has not been memorialized and develop a framework for marking public space that elevates new ways to memorialize Chicago’s true and complete history.

Using feedback collected through the upcoming public art and engagement efforts, the city, along with various stakeholder groups, will create a plan to erect a series of new monuments that equitably acknowledge Chicago’s shared history.

The Chicago Monuments Project also seeks project ideas from individual artists and/or community groups for the development of new monuments that rethink the place, purpose and permanence of monuments in our public spaces. Dead-

line for submissions is April 1, 2021.

Leading this review of monuments is the Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee, a group of community leaders, artists, architects, scholars, curators and city officials who have dedicated their time, experience and expertise. The committee, announced in August 2020, is co-chaired by Mark Kelly, commissioner of DCASE, Bonnie McDonald, president & CEO of Landmarks Illinois and Jennifer Scott, director/chief curator of Jane Addams Hull-House Museum.

“The Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee has considered hundreds of the city’s sculptures and plaques in this critically important process,” said DCASE Commissioner and Advisory Committee Co-Chair Mark Kelly. “The City’s public art collection is a defining characteristic of Chicago and it should reflect and respect all Chicagoans. The public’s input will now help us evaluate the collection and to commission new works.”

projects website. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to share feedback on specific monuments, monuments in general or what monuments might look like in the future. The website is currently accepting public feedback.

Chicagoans are also invited to pre-register to participate in discussions with Chicago Monuments Project Advisory Committee Members, where they can ask questions, share their thoughts and learn more about the Chicago Monuments Project. Space will be limited to 20 community members per drop-in session.

The Chicago Monuments Project also seeks proposals from community partners to host and facilitate public conversations about the city’s monuments. Programs can address a specific artwork(s) identified by the Chicago Monuments Advisory Committee and/or present open platforms for a constructive dialogue about previously untold, erased or obscured narratives in the telling of Chicago’s history and the development of new monuments.

Program proposals will be reviewed by the Advisory Committee, and a select number of proposals will be identified to receive a $1,500 stipend toward

program production. Additional public program details will be updated in the upcoming weeks. “We urge residents and groups to share their perspectives, in a thoughtful and respectful manner. Public participation is critical to our success, not only in examining Chicago’s public art collection but also healing our city,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly.

CPS will lead a separate, but aligned, process to review their extensive collection of artworks. CPS is currently in the final stages of creating a Works of Art Steering Committee that will meet quarterly to review concerns about specific works of art raised by members of the CPS community. The committee will work with students, teachers, school leaders and advocacy groups to recommend and advise school communities on actions related to the collection.

“Chicago Public Schools is committed to ensuring works of art in our schools represent the diversity, history and heritage of the communities we serve,” said CPS Chief Education Officer, LaTanya McDade. “CPS is proud to participate in this joint effort to better reflect and honor the diversity of our city through public art.”

6 Things to Know About GMOs Family Features) You may have heard of “GMO” foods before, but what you may not know is the science and purpose behind them.

“GMO” is a common term used to describe foods that have been created through genetic engineering. A GMO (genetically modified organism) is a plant, animal or microorganism that has had its genetic material (DNA) changed using technology that generally involves the transfer of specific DNA from one organism to another.

Although GMO foods are widely available to consumers, there is sometimes confusion around what GMOs are and how they are used in the United States’ food supply.

As part of the Feed Your Mind education initiative, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides science-based information to help consumers better understand GMOs: 1. Only a few types of GMO foods are sold in the United States.Soybeans, cotton, corn, alfalfa, apples, canola, papaya, potatoes, summer

squash, sugar beets, pineapple and AquAdvantage salmon complete the list of GMO foods currently sold in the U.S. Only a few of these are available in the produce sections of grocery stores. Most are instead used to make ingredients that are then used in other food products like cereals and snack chips.

2. GMOs can help farmers grow crops that are resistant to diseases and insects. Humans have used traditional ways to modify crops and animals to suit their needs and tastes for more than 10,000 years. Genetic engineering lets scientists take a beneficial gene, like insect resistance, and transfer it into a plant. Results can include higher crop yields, less crop loss, longer storage life, better appearance, better nutrition or some combination of these traits.

3. GMO foods are as safe to eat as their non-GMO counterparts. The FDA, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Agriculture work together to make sure GMOs are safe for human, plant and animal health. GMO foods are

carefully studied before being sold to the public to make sure they are safe.

Some GMO plants have even been modified to improve their nutritional value. For example, some GMO soybeans contain healthier oils, which can replace oils containing trans fat.

4. GMO foods are no more likely to cause allergies than non-GMOs. You will not be allergic to a GMO food unless you’re allergic to the non-GMO version of that food. For example, if you’re not allergic to foods made with non-GMO soy, you won’t be allergic to foods made with GMO soy. When developing GMOs, scientists run tests to make sure allergens aren’t transferred from one food to another.

5. GMOs can reduce farmers’ use of pesticides. Some GMO plants contain plant-incorporated protectants to make them resistant to insects.

This lowers farmers’ need for and use of spray pesticides.

6. A “bioengineered” disclosure will be on some of the foods you eat. The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard requires
