BIENEN SCHOOL OF MUSIC SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR $100,000 NEMMERS PRIZE The Northwestern University Bienen School of Music invites nominations for the Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Music Composition, to be awarded in spring 2020. The prize honors contemporary composers of outstanding achievement who have significantly influenced the field of composition.The prize includes a $100,000 award and a performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Recipients are expected to complete two to three nonconsecutive weeks of residency interacting with students and faculty at the Bienen School of Music.

HOSPITAL CEOS ARE PREPARING FOR MAJOR CHANGE IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY For CEOs of large health care organizations, accelerating change has become the norm for the industry. However, making progress to accommodate these changes has been harder than expected, as seen in new research from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. In the “Deloitte 2019 Health Care CEO Perspectives Study “ CEOs rated three top drivers of health care industry change within the next 10 years including a shift in care settings, the adoption of value-based payment models and an increase in the demands of proactive consumers.

“The industry change that CEOs are witnessing firsthand reflects our predictions of a more consumer-centered future of health,” said Michael Main, managing director, Deloitte Consulting LLP. “Consumers want to take control of their health — they have been responding well to virtual care visits and are interested in tools that make their experience personalized, affordable and convenient.”

ACLU RESPONDS TO SUPREME COURT REVIEW OF CONTRACEPTIVE COVERAGE CHALLENGE The Supreme Court recently announced it would review Trump v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which is a challenge to the Trump Administration’s rules that allows employers and universities to deny their employees and students insurance coverage for contraception. The rule is blocked by a nationwide injunction.

“Allowing employers and universities to use their religious beliefs to block employees’ and students’ birth control coverage isn’t religious liberty — it’s discrimination,” said Brigitte Amiri, deputy director at the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project. “The Trump administration’s attempt to take away people’s insurance coverage for contraception is one of the administration’s many attacks on access to abortion and contraception, and we hope the Supreme Court will uphold the lower court’s ruling blocking this awful law.”

Students from the University of Chicago and University of Chicago Lab School volunteered their time and participated in community service projects for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Young people and adults were involved in projects at sites that included Share Your Soles, in Pullman; Senior Suites, in South Shore; First Presbyterian Chicago, in Hyde Park; Bret Harte Elementary School, in Hyde Park; FEATHERFIST, in South Shore; and Rise Against Hunger.

The service project was a collaboration between the University of Chicago University Community Service Centers, Lab School and Woodlawn Charter School.

Kafi Moragne-Patterson is the director of student civic engagement with the University of Chicago. She said a couple of the locations have been partners in the service day in the past.

“We like to continue to build on those partnerships,” she said.

There were 300 volunteers of all ages who participated in the service day. They packaged rice meals and clothing for the homeless, painted the gym at First Presbyterian, painted a mural at Bret Harte and played board games at Senior Suites.

Moragne-Patterson said what was exciting was that there were children involved. “This is the only one where children were involved. We had babies playing board games with seniors at Senior Suites, we had babies packaging food,” she said.

projects the Community Service Centers does each year adding, while she knows it is a single day of service, they want to use it as a springboard to get people of diverse backgrounds to do service. “We want families to be comfortable navigating the South side,” she said. “This is serving as a gateway to the city of Chicago broadly.”

The Share Your Soles Foundation in Pullman was a new partner this year. The non-profit organization, which was founded in 1999, provides new and like-new shoes to people in need all around the world. Mona Purdy, founder, said there were 60 volunteers at her site. “We get thousands of shoes donated every week. They sorted every pair of incoming

shoes we had in,” she said.

Purdy said she felt empowered and felt there was unity. “This really resonated with our purpose, the community coming together for the greater good, it was wonderful,” she said. She added it was impactful to see people of all ages volunteer their time.

“When you see parents working side by side with their children, it is impactful,” Purdy said. “When the group left me, it was emotional.”

Thomas Toney is the service-learning coordinator at Lab School. He recommended Share Your Soles Foundation as a partner for the service day because his students chose it as a project in Fall 2019.

“We had about 28 students

and they came back with glowing reviews so we decided to explore the potential to have a more formal partnership with them. Then, the MLK Service Day came up,” he said.

Toney said the student’s involvement in the day of service speaks to their ability to see themselves as engaged community members. “When that happens, we get some students who come up with some incredibly imaginative ideas,” he said.

Moragne-Patterson said it feels good to know people are volunteering in the community.

“I think we have a ways to go, but these are moments where we see there are a vast amount of people committed to the creation of a better world.”

Candidates for First Congressional District attend Forum

IRS Free File: Ideal for young and first-time filers

Filing taxes for the first time or working part-time? IRS Free File may be the perfect match for people looking to save money on federal tax preparation.

Most Free File users are under the age of 30 with modest incomes. The Free File adjusted gross income limit for 2020 is $69,000. For those who want to do their own taxes, Free File means free tax preparation, free electronic filing and free direct deposit, which is the fastest way to get a refund.

“Doing your taxes may seem a bit overwhelming, but it’s not. Free File does the hard work for you. The software finds the right forms, finds any tax benefits and does all the math,” said Ken Corbin, commissioner of the IRS’ Wage and Investment division.

“Here’s a key tip: have all your income records like your Form W-2 ready before you start.”

Another plus: Free File is mobile enabled. Taxpayers can use their smart phones or tablets to do their taxes.

Free File features 10 brandname tax software providers who are in a partnership with the IRS to offer their online products for free. Each provider sets additional eligibility requirements, generally based on age, state residency and income.

Here’s how Free File works: 1. Go to IRS.gov/freefile to see all Free File options.

2. Browse each of the 10 offers or use a “look up” tool to help you find the right product.

Each Free File partner sets its own eligibility standards generally based on income, age and state residency. But if your adjusted gross income was $69,000 or less, you will find at least one free product to use.

Congressman Bobby Rush, as well as two candidates, Robert Emmons, Jr., and Sarah Gad, vying for his seat, participated in Indivisible Chicago South Side’s Congressional Candidate Forum Thursday, Jan. 23, at First Unitarian Church of Chicago, in Hyde Park.

The fourth candidate, Dr. Ameena Matthews, was not in attendance due to an illness, but her campaign manager made a brief statement on her behalf, in which she thanked the organization for including her in the forum.

Esther Peters served as moderator for the forum where questions were asked by audience members as well as

by Peters. Questions were submitted ahead of time, via an online form. And, candidates were given the questions ahead of time.

Douglas Bishop, of Indivisible Chicago South Side, said it was done this way to ensure there were a range of questions. ”This is the setup we agreed to,” he said. “We thought it was better to have everybody there.”

Candidates were asked 10 questions ranging from Medicare to gun violence, from the Green New Deal to public housing.

Each candidate was given the opportunity to make an opening statement.

“When I was 27, I had raised a family and I was honorably discharged from the armed service. I supported Harold Washington two times, when he ran for State Senate and for Mayor,” Rush said.

“I’ve been in the forefront of so many issues. I’m having a great time and I’m enjoying what I’ve done.”

Emmons talked about growing up in Auburn-Gresham and described himself as a “social innovator.”

“I’ve worked bringing young people together to solve issues of gun violence,” he said. “I am running to make this the last generation to deal with everyday gun violence.”

Gad said she was approached by people from the 1st District to run for the seat. “They saw me as someone who could affect positive change,” she said.

Gad also touted her work at her law school’s clinic in representing young offenders. And, suggested the U.S. end its war on drugs.

“We should cut our losses in this Drug War. All this drug war has done is drain,” she said.

Gad suggested creating access to jobs, investing in public transportation and supporting reparations as ways to improve the 1st Congressional District.

Rush agreed jobs and economic development are important, but included another aspect, black-owned businesses.

“Why don’t we have more black-owned businesses in the 1st District,” he said.

Rush added, he has worked with corporations and businesses to bring more jobs and employment opportunities to the District.

When it came to the question about the Green New Deal, Gad said it was a particularly relevant issue in the District and that she would like to see more affirmative steps taken. Emmons talked about his endorsement from Sunrise Chicago, an organization of young people seeking to stop climate change, who champion the Green New Deal. Rush touted his sponsorship of HR1315, which would improve education and training in energy-related industries and increase the number of skilled workers from underrepresented groups.

He also talked about expanding the infrastructure for electric cars.

During a question about what committees the candidates would like to serve on, Gad took Rush to task over his recent endorsement. “I find it interesting that Congressman Rush endorsed Mike Bloomberg who is the king of

Stop and Frisk,” she said. Gad went on to say that she would want to sit on the Judiciary Committee. “I’m supporting Mike Bloomberg because he can beat Trump,” Rush said.

Emmons said he would want to sit on the Committee for Energy and Commerce so he could pass the Green New Deal.

All the candidates were in support of reparations and agreed public housing was important and impactful.

Gad said she thought more funding should be appropriated to public housing. Emmons supported universal housing through the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also said he supports a federal rent control. “Development often comes with displacement,” Emmons said.

Rush said during this session, more than 400 bills have been passed and 275 of those bills were bi-partisan.

“We will not get anything done until we control the Senate and the White House,” he said.

Camelot Illinois Launches Partnership With CPS Provides $96,000 in funding for CPS’ Computer Science for All Programs Camelot Illinois today announced a new partnership with Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to fund two new school projects as part of its Computer Science for All Initiative (CS4All), an innovative computer science program that provides equity, empowerment, and opportunities that maximize the potential of every student.

“Maker’s Space.” The funds will go toward purchasing technology equipment and furniture, including tables, cubes, and moveable whiteboards. Located in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, Walsh is an open enrollment neighborhood school that provides bilingual education to a school population of about 300 students. Their goal is to

become the primary techcentered elementary school on the West Side, as a model for other regions and schools.Camelot Illinois will also fund the expansion of the robotics program at Walter H. Dyett High School by providing three new robots that will help expand the in-school and afterschool robotics program to its

curriculum next year. In an effort to provide quality educational and experiential opportunities in STEM, Dyett will expand its robotics program for its more than 550 students and provide additional support for its teachers to be wellprepared for the official introduction of computer science to its curriculum. Dyett is located in Chicago’s Washington Park neighborhood and currently offers programming that focuses on the arts, with a desire to bring more computer science offerings to its students.

“Quality STEM programming has the ability to open a world of opportunities for our students and show them the endless power of learning,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “Central to our Vision at CPS is ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality holistic education that gives them the tools they need to lead our city into the future and we are grateful to Camelot’s generous grant that will expand access to state-of-the-art STEM and computer science resources.”

Camelot’s partnership with the CPS CS4All program also includes funding to support teachers’ professional development for

general computer science instruction, as well as opportunities for Camelot Illinois employees to mentor, volunteer and tutor at both schools.

The commitment from Camelot Illinois will help officially launch these two computer science programs in September 2020. America not so neighborly? Research shows U.S. not as divided as you may think

(BPT) - From politics to parenting to rising property costs and much more, it seems like American communities are more divided than ever before. Are the days of close-knit communities and positive neighborly interactions a thing of the past?

While you aren't likely to find the Cleavers down the street, this doesn't mean your neighbors are cold and conflicted. In fact, a new survey found just the opposite.

OfferUp, the largest mobile marketplace in the U.S. for local buyers and sellers, released the 2019 Good Neighbor Report, which found there are steadfast levels of selflessness, care and trust across American communities, regardless of age group or location.

This is good news for the company, which relies on the promise of positive relationships that come from people buying and selling in their communities. However, there's a lot of important insight that proves people aren't as at odds as the general population believes, and even in diverse times, the health of American

American communities is strong.

Political differences Whether it's the local government or discussion on the upcoming presidential election, the stage is ripe for political divide. However, the study found few (18%) have actually encountered a scenario where political divisions impacted a relationship with a neighbor. Among those who did, the vast majority (70%) still consider the neighbor who they had a political conflict with as a friend.

Communication hurdles Despite popular belief that social media is making younger generations increasingly isolated, more than half of all Americans from Gen Z to Baby Boomers regularly communicate with their neighbors in person, the study found. Likewise, younger Americans are just as likely to do something kind or helpful for a neighbor as their older counterparts.Building friendshipsThe idea of being "neighborly" is still alive and well, with 61% of people

feeling it's important to develop friendships with neighbors and 58% likely to reach out and welcome a new neighbor to the neighborhood.

Nearly one-third (32%) have invited a neighbor over for a special event and 49% say they trust their neighbors completely.

Tips to be more neighborly Befriending neighbors helps you build a strong community you can depend on and trust, plus you'll often find when you give, you receive.

Here are a few easy ways to connect with your neighbors: * Say hello. It's short, simple and effective. * Notice what your neighbor likes and use that as a cue for conversation and small gifts. For example, if your neighbor runs daily, you can ask about their exercise routine. If you see they drink coffee frequently, a gift card for a cup of coffee from their favorite coffee shop

Columbia College Chicago Announces Second Madeleine Moore Burrell Fellow Columbia College Chicago recently announced 2020 Madeleine Moore Burrell Fellowship recipient, Keli Garrett. The academic residency, which is named after Columbia trustee, Madeleine Moore Burrell, is now in its second year.

“We are thrilled to announce the second Madeleine Moore Burrell Playwriting Fellow,” said Rosita M. Sands, interim dean of the Columbia College Chicago School of Fine and Performing Arts. “Not only does this residency provide fellows with the opportunity to mentor and share their particular expertise with students who are at various stages of preparation for future careers, but the fellowship also gives our students the opportunity to engage in academic and preprofessional opportunities that highlight a range of theatrical experiences rooted in African

Diasporic aesthetics and cultural traditions.”

The fellowship was created to advance Columbia College Chicago student learning, to support new play development by providing resident playwrights with resources and time to write, and to strengthen Columbia’s commitment to cultural inclusion by exposing faculty and students to a broad pool of playwrights, particularly those representing communities of color.

Keli Garrett is a writer, director, and performer whose play adaptations have been produced and developed at numerous venues. Her work is anthologized in Contemporary Plays by African American Women. Garrett was born and raised in Chicago and holds a BA from Columbia College Chicago and an MFA from Brown University.

“My time at Columbia College Chicago helped

me find my voice as an artist and to think more completely about what that meant. Overall, I felt tremendously supported by members of faculty,” said Garrett about her time at Columbia College Chicago. “I feel great about returning as a fellow.

It’s full circle in a way. It means a lot that the work I have done in performance and writing has brought me back to my artistic beginnings. It’s also an opportunity to work with and teach my younger peers. I’m looking forward to sharing what I know and learning from them at the same time.”

Keli teaches the Topics in Playwriting course Black Women and Experimental Theater and will be working on developing a new play during her fellowship. A reading of the play will be performed by students during Columbia College Chicago’s Manifest Urban Arts Festival in May.

Chicago Park District Hosts Three Teen Fairs at City Colleges, Starting Jan. 31 The Chicago Park District invites teens from across Chicago to attend its 5th annual Teen Opportunity Fair series. “The Chicago Park District is committed to providing teens with the structure and access to resources that they need during their formative years to go on to build strong futures,” said Chicago Park District Superintendent & CEO Michael P. Statewide Radon Poster and Video Contests Now Accepting Entries Cold weather might put a damper on outdoor activities, but according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), it is a great time to test your home for cancer-causing radon gas that has been found in nearly 40 percent of Illinois homes tested.

IEMA is encouraging people to test for radon during Radon Action Month in January.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is naturally produced from the soil. It can enter homes and buildings through small cracks in the foundation, sump pumps or soil in crawlspaces. Statistics show radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. An estimated 1,200 people in Illinois develop radon-related lung cancer each year.

“Radon related health risks are preventable,” said Acting IEMA director, Alicia Tate-Nadeau.

“Radon can be detected with a simple test and mitigated through well-established techniques.

With greater awareness we can save lives.”

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is announcing several initiatives this January to increase public awareness of radon risks and ways to reduce radon exposure.

Also new this year, participants can pre-register for the 2020 video contest before January 31 for a chance to win a free shortterm test kit. All videos, entry forms and release forms must be submitted by March 13.
