BRIEFLY EDUCATION South Suburban College Holds Welcome Back Celebration
CHICAGO, IL - Mercy Hospital & Medical Center’s has a new infusion center which is designed to make chemotherapy treatments as easy and convenient as possible for cancer patients. The 1,600 square foot infusion center, which opened June 6, 2017, has eight chairs and serves between 12 and 20 patients per day. The $480,000 cost was funded in part by the Mercy Dinner Dance Gala, Mercy’s largest fundraiser.
LAW & POLITICS Just Democracy Coalition Applauds Sen. Duckworth’s Introduction of PROVE Act SPRINGFIELD- Fresh off its win from the signing of automatic voter registration last week, the Just Democracy Illinois coalition applauded Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth’s introduction of the PROVE Act (The Pre-Registration Of Voters Everywhere Act). Preregistration would allow otherwise eligible 16- and 17 year-olds to register to vote, so that their registration would become active as soon as they become eligible by age. In Illinois, voters are eligible to vote in general elections at 18, and at 17 in primaries if the voter will be 18 by the general election.

Hyde Park Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk CHICAGO - On Saturday, 9-23-2017, local residents and supporting businesses will participate in the 4th annual Hyde Park Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk. The event will support raising awareness about breast health, early detection and family risk factors, as well as raise money for breast cancer research. Monies generated have been given to the University of Chicago Medicine for the Cancer Risk Clinic. In addition to conducting ground-breaking research to find a cure for breast cancer, the University of Chicago is also studying African Americans and how specific genes may be found that are not the same markers as in other races and ethnicities. This is especially important because, the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes aren’t common markers in African Americans. The goal is to raise $1 million for critical research to help find
a cure. Just as important as raising money for research is helping to increase awareness about early detection and family risk factors. Given this, the Hyde Park Breast Cancer 5K Run/Walk event helps to connect people to the message of breast health and reminds them to talk to loved ones, friends and neighbors about the self exams and early screens. In addition to the annual run/walk, the organization provides free presentations on breast health awareness at local schools and community organizations throughout the year. The event will take place on 9-23-2017 at 8AM(registration starts at 7 AM) at 52nd & Hyde Park Boulevard. To register go to www.hydeparkbreastcancer5k.org. This is a CARA certified 5K race.
COMMUNITY FOCUS State Fire Marshal Commemorates 16th Anniversary of 9/11 CHICAGO – Last week, on September 11, the Illinois State Fire Marshal honored the nearly three thousand men and women who lost their lives in the attacks on September 11, 2001, as well as all the courageous first responders who responded to the attack. Those victims include 343 firefighters who sacrificed their lives for their duty. “Those who lost their lives sixteen years ago are gone but never forgotten,” said Illinois State Fire Marshal Matt Perez. “We remember the courage and sacrifice of our fellow firefighters who stepped up in the face of grave danger. Today and every day, our thoughts are with the loved ones they left behind.” Victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks
include more than 400 emergency workers, police officers, firefighters, and EMT/paramedics. These first responders rushed into unknown circumstances to save the lives of fellow Americans are heroes. In recognition of the 16th anniversary, the Illinois State Fire Marshal encourages all Illinoisans to remember those we lost, including our first responders and those with ties to Illinois.

President Obama announced in a video and e-mail the first set of Obama Foundation initiatives to inspire and empower young people to change their world. More than a building or a museum, the Foundation will be a living, working center for citizenship -- continuously developing as we learn from leaders across the country and the globe. The Foundation has announced several initiatives to empower and equip civic innovators and young people with the skills and tools needed to change their communities: The Obama Foundation Summit, Obama Foundation Fellowship, Obama Foundation Training Days, and the integration of the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance into the Obama Foundation later this year. “The initiatives announced reflect the input from those conversations. From leaders who are already making an impact, to people who are interested in becoming more involved, but don’t know where to start, our goal is to make our programs accessible to anyone, anywhere, with any background or level of experience. This is only the beginning — our programs will grow as we continue to listen and learn,” said David Simas, Chief Executive Officer at the Obama Foundation.
CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF 2017 RAHM’S READERS SUMMER LEARNING CHALLENGE
Chicago Public Library (CPL) and over 800 kids and families from around Chicago celebrated the completion of this year’s super hero themed Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge with a free Family Day at the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI). Rahm’s Readers challenges Chicago children to read 20 minutes a day and participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities throughout the summer. To celebrate the completion of the program, CPL and the City of Chicago partnered with MSI to welcome children and their families to participate in hands-on experiments and art projects, and to learn more about super science by exploring the museum. “Congratulations to all of the children who answered the call to read, discover and participate in STEAM activities throughout the summer,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “The students who participated in Rahm’s Readers did not take the summer off, and will start the school year off in a better position because of it.” Rahm’s Readers is designed to help prevent the “summer slide,” where children can lose up to three months of education if they do not remain engaged during summer months. According to recent analysis by Chapin Hall, children participating in the Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge demonstrated on average 15 percent greater reading gains and 20 percent great math gains over and above their peers who did not participate in the program. Rahm’s Readers 2017 had a super hero theme, featuring real-life heroes from Chicago Police and Fire Departments at several of the 19 community book giveaway events, courtesy of Bernie’s Book Bank through support from William Blair.

St. Bernard Hospital recently hosted its second annual Community Baby Shower for 90 expecting mothers in Englewood. Evelyn Jones, R.N., vice president of Nursing Services at St. Bernard, said the baby shower was a chance to show support for the mothers-to-be by educating them about issues new moms face as well as by giving gifts. The idea of a community baby shower arose after hospital staff learned the majority of expecting moms in the area either weren’t planning baby showers or never had them. Last year, hospital staff, including nurse practitioners, medical assistants and receptionists asked for permission to host the shower. This year, directors from various departments purchased gifts like strollers, car seats and diaper bags, among other gifts. Staff also told expecting mothers how to care for their infants, covering key points like Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
(SIDS), suffocation, children’s oral health, immunization, pediatric asthma and car seat safety. “Anything a mom would need to take care of a baby, we gave it to them,” Jones said. “We also didn’t just give gifts, but an education on how to take care of the baby. We had speakers that discussed the importance of breast feeding and safe sleep,” she said. Jones said she understands the need to continue to help expecting mothers in Englewood because she was once in that position. “I’m from Englewood and I was one of those few moms who at one time didn’t get a lot of support.” She said giving back is important and let’s expecting mothers know, “that we are not just here as a hospital.” Located in the heart of Englewood at 326 W 64th St., St. Bernard Hospital is the last remaining hospital of four serving 80,000 patients for over 100 years. 4 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR HAPPINESS It is easy to focus on things that you don’t like. However, if you want to experience extreme happiness, then it’s best to focus on positive things that happen. Here are a few tips to help you focus on the good things in your life. Tip #1: Create a Gratitude Jar First, find a jar. Leave the jar clear or decorate it if you choose to. Get three pieces of paper and write one thing on each piece of paper that you are grateful for today. Repeat this every day until the jar is full. Review the notes periodically (especially when you need a quick pickme-up) to remind yourself of what is good in your life. Tip #2: Send Thank-you Notes While there are multiple factors that contribute to your happiness, research has shown that you can choose to be happy by fostering such positive emotions as empathy and gratitude. One way to increase your happiness is to show appreciation toward other people. Try writing thank-you notes. It’s a great way of letting people know that they matter to you. It is also a great way to start the process of reciprocity. Tip #3: Notice Other People’s Happiness Another way of increasing your own happiness is to observe happiness in others. Research has shown that the best way for us to predict how much we will enjoy an experience is to see how much other people enjoyed it. When you notice other people’s happiness, you should join in and be happy too. Tip #4: Eliminate Toxic People There is no good reason to put up with people saying or doing things that are unkind to you. You should avoid people who are mean or negative. If they make you unhappy you should eliminate them from your life.

(BPT) - For Christine Wilkins, now 16, freshman year of high school was an ordeal. The same students who bullied her in middle school were at her new high school. Just approaching the school entry filled her with angst. One day, instead of going in, she turned around and went home. “The idea of walking through those gates gave me so much anxiety,” she says. Christine hated school. Unable to focus or dedicate herself to her schoolwork, she made C’s, D’s and F’s. Eventually, Christine stopped going to school and dropped out. Tackling the dropout issue There are many reasons students drop out of high school. Poverty, pregnancy, homelessness, bullying or just losing interest are some of the many issues that cause students to skip a day of class, a week and eventually drop out altogether. According to the U.S. Department of Education, missing just three weeks of school is enough to threaten a student’s chance to graduate. What can be done to help these students? As each person is a complex individual, there is no single solution that can reach the multitude of different students. This is why Learn4Life, a nonprofit dropout recovery program, takes a dynamic approach to reengage students. The average student who enrolls in Learn4Life has been out of school for 11.4 weeks. Through different methods, such as personalized learning, mentoring and job skills training, the program has been highly successful in reengaging dropouts and keeping them in school. These are the five effective ways they reach out to these students.
1. Dealing with issues outside of the classroom. Whether it’s counseling to help students come to terms with issues they’re facing or a mentoring program that builds confidence, helping students deal with nonacademic issues is a way to give them the stability they need to succeed. 2. Meeting students where they are. Not every student is at the same emotional, academic or mental level as their peers. Through one-on-one attention, personalized learning and academic planning, students can get help where they most need it. This personalized approach is designed to find a solution that’s best for the individual. 3. Removing obstacles to learning. Sometimes it’s something as simple as not having proper transportation or childcare that prevents a student from returning to
complete their education. Giving students flexible schedules, help with transportation and access to teachers or mentors at different hours of the day can make a big difference in their ability to learn. 4. Making them feel safe. It’s an unfortunate fact that schools are not always the safe environment they ought to be. Creating a respectful and safe place to learn is essential for removing social anxieties and fears that can hinder learning. 5. Helping them see a future. Through job skills training programs, students can prepare for a future beyond a diploma. As a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) partner, Learn4Life offers courses in work-readiness skills, career exploration, writing cover letters and resumes, completing applications and interviewing. The effectiveness of Learn4Life’s approach can be seen in the fact that when students enroll, only 15 percent of them come to school regularly, but as the year goes on, that number jumps to 86 percent. Concluding Christine’s story After six months out of school, counselors at Christine’s old high school pointed her to a Learn4Life program at Desert Sands Charter School. She enrolled and by participating in an internship with Pacific Gateway, part of the YouthBuild WIOA program at Desert Sands, Christine gained experience in customer service and Microsoft applications. Currently, Christine attends school and is getting all A’s and B’s in her school work, and has a full-time internship. At the end of the internship, she will receive certificates in customer service and Microsoft Office. “I’m dedicated because I’m getting knowledge and experience for a life outside of school,” Christine says.

(NAPSI)—Why is “Dot.,” a new original animated series on Sprout from Industrial Brothers in association with The Jim Henson Company and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, so timely and important? In 2017, 10 years after the iPhone was introduced, mobile technology has rapidly changed the way we interact with media. Children as young as 2 use tablets and phones— swiping, tapping and viewing to gain access to content. For today’s youngest digital natives, digital tools are an integral part of their lives, used in fluid ways to explore their worlds. Technology is not SEPARATE but instead a PART of their lives, an important tool that helps them play, learn, socialize and engage. Mobile interactive apps and games provide ample opportunities for children to move their bodies, learn, create digital masterpieces and explore everything and anything that captures their imagination. At the same time, in today’s 24/7 digital environment, children can use media to make impulsive choices, view material that is not age appropriate or communicate inappropriately. The benefits are great but the risks must be mitigated. When The Jim Henson Company asked me to be an advisor on preschool TV show “Dot.,” I enthusiastically agreed. The show’s creators wanted to embed digital citizenship lessons into each episode to help guide both children and parents to responsibly navigate technology. The hope is that through Dot’s experiences, children learn to harness the power of this interactive and informational medium in the most productive and pro-social manner. citizenship skills early, parents can ensure that their children learn best practices and develop the skills they need to take advantage of the many opportunities that technology and media offer us. Each episode features a learning theme—Making, Digital Citizenship, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Teamwork, Empathy, and Perspective Taking—and integrates a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and math) curriculum. Five ways to help your child become a Digital Citizen: 1. The most important thing is to model good behavior. This means think about your media use and what your children see you doing. 2. Find times when the whole family has no devices—dinner table, walks to school, hikes, sport
games. The most important thing is that they learn there are times that are screen free—and that it is essential to build these into our day. 3. Pick your battles. If you don’t want your teens to “unfriend” you or even worse create another page you won’t know about, don’t ask about every transgression and let a few things slide. Try saying a few positive things each day about their media use. 4. Live where they live. Remember, it’s not just about social media…it’s also about what they’re watching, reading, and listening to. Common Sense Media is an amazing source for comprehensive information. 5. Look for teachable moments in the real world. You can use things that happen in real life to create stories that may resonate for teens. Bring them up in conversation. Often, kids’ ears will perk up when they hear these stories. LOS ANGELES, -- Parker Street Productions’ awardwinning Writer/ Director, Jade Jenise Dixon, hit all the right marks with her feature film directorial debut, TRUTH HALL (2009). The film won several film festal awards, was in heavy rotation on the B.E.T., Centric and Bounce TV networks, made the “Best Sellers” list at Target and secured distribution through Image entertainment. But, like so many other female directors, Jade was left spinning her wheels. And, because of lack of diversity in the Director’s chair in Hollywood, Jade had essentially given up. She got engaged and resolved to being content with a simpler life. “My passion to direct, never left. I just didn’t know how to get my next film done or where my next job was going to come from,” says the Writer/Director. But when her engagement fell apart short of the alter, Jade started writing again. “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get into the ring again. The odds of a female filmmaker making a second feature film aren’t good. I was scared. But I had to push through it,” says Jade.
