WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a landmark case on whether the government needs a warrant to access a person’s cell phone location history. The American Civil Liberties Union is co-counsel in the case, Carpenter v. United States. In 2011, without getting a probable cause warrant, the government obtained from cell service companies months’ worth of phone location records for suspects in a robbery investigation in Detroit. For one suspect, Timothy Carpenter, the records covered 127 days and revealed 12,898 separate points of location data.

After Carpenter was convicted at trial, based in part on the cell phone location evidence, he appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 2–1 that no warrant is required under the Fourth Amendment.

Levinger, who described the statements as “horrendous,” said, “It’s like 1960’s type statements,” characterizing the comments as “extremely racist.”

Citing comments made by the mayor during the May 24th veteran’s press conference where Mayor Emanuel referred to the process of building the development as a “collaborative,” effort, the mayor came under fire from Chicago Housing Initiative officials in a news release who criticized the mayor for saying members representing the Jefferson Park residents needed to be heard.

“Racism does not deserve to be heard and segregation is not something we will collaborate with,” Pastor Robert Jones of Mt. Caramel Baptist Church said. “We do not compromise with hate.”

Levinger added, “[Mayor Emanuel] and the city corporation counsel are well aware of the racial animosity motivating the opposition parties on the Northwest Side. So, for him to turn around and say they deserve to be heard and they deserve a collaborative process and they deserve compromise shows a severe erosion of the civil rights terrain.”

Levinger said the Chicago Housing Initiative would love for the first affordable CHA’s Family and Veteran Housing Development to be on the Northwest Side of Chicago, and made it clear that they do not want to mark residents as racists, but only unmask the structures that keep certain people from experiencing the best qualities of life.

“It’s only the bigotry of the neighbors that is getting in the way of the possibility of people being able to raise their families in an area with a lot of amenities and opportunities,” Levinger said, adding, “everyone deserves affordable housing because it is a basic human need and a basic human right and the city of Chicago has the resources to do a lot more to provide access to it.”

“This community on the North and West side feeds into a level one elementary school,” Levinger said. “It is an extremely transit rich area that is just a half-mile from the Jefferson Park Blue line and has 13 major bus routes and is within 30 minutes of 700,000 jobs. So, this is exactly the kind of place where affordable housing should be so people can have a good, quality life.”

Levinger said her organization will continue to fight to see the development through.

CHICAGO - The Woodlawn Community Summit recently announced its Poetry and Writers’ Workshop for students grades 6-12 with special guest Tyehimba Jess, 2017 Pulitzer Poetry Prize Winner and University of Chicago alumnus, on Saturday June 17, 2017 from 8:30am-12:00pm at the University of Chicago, Ida Noyes Hall located at 1212 East 59th Street.

The Poetry and Writers’ Workshop is designed for youth with an interest in writing, poetry and the literary arts. Youth will hear Jess read from his 2017 Pulitzer Prize winning book “Olio” and participate in an engaging and open conversation. Following the reading, youth will participate in a one hour, hands on, writers’ workshop entitled “Phone Book” and facilitated by Asadah Kirkland of the Soulful Chicago Book Fair.

Collins urges governor to sign automatic voter registration into law SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Jacqueline Collins joined representatives of Common Cause Illinois and numerous other activists, advocates and fellow Springfield lawmakers at a press conference in Chicago on June 6, 2017, to commemorate the passage of automatic voter registration in Senate Bill 1933, which passed the General Assembly toward the end of the May legislative session.

Collins said the next step is encouraging people to vote.

“This is indicative of what we can accomplish when we work across the partisan divide,” said Collins, D-Chicago.

“I’ve been challenging potential voters to want to move beyond that apathy and the hopelessness, to understand that the vote is their voice, and voting does matter.”

Senate Bill 1933 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of the General Assembly. It awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

Illinois AFL-CIO Endorses JB Pritzker For Governor Chicago, IL — JB Pritzker was endorsed on June 6, 2017, by the Illinois AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 900,000 union members across the state. The endorsement gives “a powerful force behind his bid to challenge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018,” according to a JB Pritzker press release.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the unusually early move by the Illinois AFL-CIO, coming nine months before the March primary election, is a significant political boost for Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor who has vowed to self-fund his campaign and spend to elect Democratic House and Senate candidates. The union backing gives him much-needed boots on the ground.

Duckworth Speaks At Rally Against Cuts to Medicaid

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) joined Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Ron Wyden (DOR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) at a rally on June 6, 2017, with disability rights advocates against a $1.4 trillion in cuts to Medicaid which President Donald Trump has proposed in his healthcare repeal bill and budget blueprint. Senator Duckworth warned that the cuts would hurt students across the country who benefit from Medicaid-funded counselors and school nurses and jeopardize the healthcare coverage of both the millions of Veterans who rely on Medicaid and the two-thirds of nursing home residents whose bills are paid by Medicaid.

“This President’s proposed cuts to Medicaid would fall hardest on the people who need it most and that’s unacceptable,” Duckworth said. “It is not only a broken promise to our seniors and those with disabilities who depend on Medicaid to live with dignity and participate as equal members of our society, but also to our veterans, who deserve better than having their critical health coverage stripped away from them.”

CHICAGO -- Justice Divided (justicedivided. com) is a new educational tool focused on a longrecognized problem of the juvenile justice system: Youth of all races break the law, but black youth are more likely to be punished for it. The project seeks to promote awareness of this phenomenon, also known as disproportionate minority contact, and equip youth and those who advocate for them with strategies for creating a more equitable justice system.

The Justice Divided project synthesizes several datasets into engaging infographics to illustrate how Chicago’s black youth are impacted by the justice system more than their peers. Statistics visualized include: Arrests for marijuana possession have fallen since Chicago decriminalized marijuana in 2012. However, the proportion of arrests of black youth stayed the same through statewide decriminalization in 2016.

In 2014, black youth were almost twice as likely to be arrested citywide. In some Northside neighborhoods, black youth made up the smallest share of the population, but the largest share of arrests.

In 2015, 87% of youth released to Chicago from Illinois juvenile prisons were black, even though black youth only make up 42% of the population of youth in Chicago between the ages 10 and 17.

Justice Divided users are encouraged to learn about youth incarceration then take action by raising awareness, volunteering and contacting legislators. Organizations Awarded $1 Million in Grants to Support Chicago Entrepreneurs targeted and intentional about supporting entrepreneurs from marginalized communities,” Jimmy Odom, Director of Inclusive Entrepreneurship for ChicagoNEXT said. “This Blackstone Challenge cohort will work together to make sure a diverse representation of entrepreneurs get the resources they need.”

BLUE1647, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow BLUE1647, an entrepreneurship and technology center, to double BLUEINCUBATE, an accelerator offering shared workspace and membership to start-ups, tech-enabled businesses and individuals, allowing these entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, integrate technology into their strategy, and network with stakeholders and investors.

Bunker Labs, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bunker Labs, an organization that helps military veterans launch

and grow businesses through educational programs and networking, to create Guided Virtual Cohorts, a remote, high touch version of the successful Bunker in a Box platform, and the CEOcircle Program, a program which provides additional resources to later stage founders.

Future Founders, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support Future Founders, an organization focused on inspiring the next generation of young entrepreneurs, in the creation of Future Founders Chicago Cohort, a program that fosters the development of millennial businesses from communities of color, women, veterans and immigrants with 1-on-1 biweekly mentoring, monthly cohort workshops, and an intensive two-day summit. i.c.stars, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow i.c.stars, an organization that provides technology-based training for low-income adults, to expand Enterprise Next, a three month lean startup training and incubation program, and to add a pitch night and Idea Hacks.

UI Labs, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support UI Labs, an innovation accelerator that brings together partners from “university + industry,” to create the City Digital: Inclusive Entrepreneurship for Collaborative Innovation, a partnership between City Digital and Colony 5 to help community based startups tackle complex urban challenges and explore ideas on smart city developments through entrepreneurship.

Women’s Business Development Center, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow the Women’s Business Development Center, which aims to strengthen women’s entrepreneurship and impact on the economy, to expand ScaleUp, a program which provides entrepreneurial education, one -on-one support and mentoring, to two new neighborhoods including West Rogers Park and South Chicago.

For the first year of the Blackstone Challenge, eight organizations were awarded grants totaling $1 million to connect diverse Chicago entrepreneurs, particularly people of color, immigrants, women and veterans, with resources to help scale and grow their businesses. These grants are part of a $3 million commitment made in January 2017.

“By investing in organizations that support diverse entrepreneurs we create economic opportunities that reach all parts of Chicago,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are incredibly grateful that Chicago was chosen as the pilot city for the Blackstone Challenge program, and look forward to seeing it generate jobs and growth as we build on its success.”

Nearly 50 organizations submitted proposals, of which the top eight were selected to receive grants. Starting next month, the grantees will focus on deploying strategies to recruit, engage and support diverse entrepreneurs throughout the Chicagoland area. At the end of the first year, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago will announce the process to distribute an additional $2 million in grant funding.

When we doubt, when we hesitate, if we are lucky, we are only second-guessing ourselves. Yet somehow, I get the sense that sometimes when we doubt, we are not only second-guessing ourselves, we are also second-guessing God. There is something to be said for not only not having enough faith and conviction in ourselves, but also not having enough faith and conviction in God. This is why one great thinker suggested that our faith in God is measured by our confidence in self.

Our doubt means there is some uncertainty or confusion around what we want to do and whether we are able to do it. Of ourselves, we may not be able to do it but in Christ, it is a whole different ball game. When we doubt, we are being of two minds. James 1:2 challenges us to count it nothing but joy when we face the difficulty that comes with doubt. Through this scripture we may consider that when we are going through the difficulty of doubt, we must keep going and discover the ability to consider the doubt and reframe it with faith. The writer goes on to say, “…because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance;” Therefore, if we can consider it joy, it will be a springboard to our faith. When our faith is enriched, it helps to develop more endurance and joy.

When you are wrestling with a bear, you do not stop when you are tired, you only stop when the bear gets tired. It is necessary to have some endurance, tenacity, determination, and perseverance because you are going to face some trials. You may question whether you can make it through but the only question is whether or not you will face those trials with joy because joy puts you in a certain mindset, on a certain path, and gives you a certain perspective through which to see your world.

Alternatively, when you cannot face it with joy and you face it from within the context of the struggle, we find ourselves having a little more to be in doubt about.
