CONGRESSMAN DANNY DAVIS INTRODUCES FATHERHOOD LEGISLATION

By Christopher Shuttlesworth Congressman Danny Davis and U.S. Representative Andre Carson recently introduced new legislation called The Julia Carson Responsible Fatherhood and Healthy Families Act of 2017.

One of the goals of the legislation is to help fathers become more actively involved in the lives of their children.

The legislation seeks to Congressman Danny Davis increase the upward economic mobility of custodial and noncustodial parents so they can actively participate in financially supporting their children. It also addresses issues evolving around child rearing as well as maintaining a positive, healthy and nonviolent relationships between fathers, their children and the co-parent.

“In some communities, finding a child with a father in their house or in their life is like finding a needle in a haystack,” Davis said. “Many of them are

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Public School Board votes on July 28, 2017, to adopt the updated CPS Wellness Policy committing the district to the Good Food Purchasing Program. Adoption of the Program in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) will deepen and accelerate the District’s commitment to values-based purchasing that contributes to overall health and community wellness in the city and region.

“We are excited to see Chicago Public Schools continue to be a leader by using procurement dollars to improve the freshness, quality and nutrition in their meals for students while growing opportunities for local, sustainable and fair producers and processors,” stated Rodger Cooley, Executive Director of the Chicago Food Policy Action Council.

An important source of healthy food for children in the city, Chicago Public Schools make their meals free to all students while serving nearly 27 million breakfasts and 43 million lunches per school year and spending close to $80 million on food purchases in 2016 – 2017.

The Good Food Purchasing Program provides a metric-based framework and set of tools that guide institutions to direct their buying power toward suppliers that meet benchmarks related to five core values: local economies, environmental sustainability, valued workforce, animal welfare, and nutrition.

WASHINGTON — About a third of people who are 65 years of age and older will be involved in an accidental fall this year that diminishes their quality of life. That number increases the older a person gets.

“Falls are complex and happen for a variety of reasons,” said Rebecca Parker, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. “But there are common steps that can be taken right now to greatly decrease your risk of falling for the first time, including those who have fallen multiple times.”

Emergency physicians have created a video designed to give people who have fallen in the past — especially the more vulnerable elderly population — easy steps to avoid future falls. It’s called the “7 Step Fall Challenge.” Emergency physicians are confident that by following these steps, you will greatly decrease your risk of falling, especially repeat falling. Future child support cases to use widely accepted ‘Income Shares’

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services announced today that the most widely used method nationwide to calculate child support will begin to be applied to new cases in Illinois starting July 1, following a bipartisan law signed by Governor Bruce Rauner last year. Child support orders established before July 1, 2017 will not change.

Under the “income shares” model, child support will be calculated primarily by looking at typical costs for families in similar circumstances. The income of both parents will also be factored in. Currently, child support in Illinois is calculated primarily based on the income of the obligor – the parent who owes payments – and the number of children.

The income shares model considers the typical costs to raise a child for a family at a similar income level as the parents in a case. If there are two incomes, both are added together to arrive at the amount needed to raise the child. Each parent’s contribution is then calculated by applying the methods laid out by the model. The portion owed by the parent who the child lives with is assumed to be paid because they reside together.

Illinois now joins 39 other states and the District of Columbia in adopting the income shares model for calculating child support.

Lauren Moy, who recently graduated from Whitney M. Young Magnet High school, along with five other local students submitted essays to ComEd on why they desired to visit the museum, which was established by Act of Congress in 2003.

Back 2 School Illinois Launches Contest to Surprise Two Chicago Schools with Free Supplies for Every Student This Fall Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low-income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom has announced the launch of this year’s “Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School” contest.

Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies.

Each and every child at both of the winning schools receives their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year.

Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated. Whether you are a parent, community leader, concerned citizen, student or member of a faculty, you can enter the contest on behalf of a school.

The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th. During the first week of classes this fall, the student bodies of both winning schools will be surprised by Back 2 School Illinois with the delivery of the free school supplies.

While most students strive for success in the classroom, it can sometimes prove difficult when they don’t have the necessary school supplies. With B2SI’s annual contest, underserved Chicago students from the two winning schools are given the tools they need to thrive in the classroom. Providing these kits the first week of school lets the students know that they deserve a good education.

“We know that there are opportunities across the city that kids or their parents don’t even know about,” Madison-Boyd said. “So, part of what we’re trying to do is to make it easier for kids, parents and caring adults to find these programs and get youth connected to programs that they’re interested in.”

She said the organization’s main goal is to make the youth programs more visible, especially during the summer because they know students have just completed school for the year.

Madison-Boyd continued to explain that CCOL has 80,000 student portfolios on their website.

She said students can begin a portfolio by completing a quick survey on their website that will help CCOL know what programs or opportunities will be more suitable for their career path.

“The website, which can be accessed through a

computer or phone, has a search bar that allows anyone to search by zip-code, age, date, topics, keywords,” MadisonBoyd said. “Kids can also set up portfolios on the website and in their portfolios, we will make recommendations to them based on what programs they’re most interested in.”

She said if the students participate in one of CCOL’s 120 partners programs, they can build their portfolio and keep a record of their participation in their portfolio on CCOL’s website.

“For example, if they go to a program at the Field Museum, then they can add a description of their experience in their portfolio so they can keep it over time.

We know this is important because a lot of things that kids do outside of school are very hard to keep track of or talk about.”

Students who connect with CCOL programming this summer will also have opportunities to win prizes like iPad minis, tickets to Chicago sporting events and could be honored at CCOL’s annual Back to School Jam on September 9th at Jones College Prep High School.

(Family Features) As the weather gets warmer, mosquitoes can prevent homeowners from reaping the benefits of living life outside.

According to a Harris Poll conducted on behalf of TruGreen, 85 percent of Americans say that mosquitoes limit their family’s outdoor activities during the months they’re most active. The same survey also found that nearly two-thirds of Americans are concerned about protecting themselves and their family from Zika or other mosquito-borne illnesses.

A majority of respondents reported using bug spray on themselves and their family members to combat mosquitoes outdoors at home. Although it’s the leading preventative measure, still only half say it is most effective at preventing mosquitoes from biting.

Depending on where you live, the mosquito biting season lasts 5-7 months.

If spray isn’t adequate to combat the mosquitoes at your home, it may be necessary to take additional measures.

These tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the pest control experts at TruGreen can help combat mosquitoes outside of the home: Remove standing water. Mosquitoes generally lay eggs near water, so once a week take time to dump anything that

may hold water in the yard. This includes buckets, kiddie pools and birdbaths.

Don’t overlook items like toys, planters and flowerpot saucers. For containers intended to hold water, like cisterns or rain barrels, regularly check that the lid is secure so mosquitoes can’t gain access.

A finely woven mesh is a good alternative if there is no lid. If you can’t cover the container and won’t be drinking from it, use a larvicide to treat the water.

Be wary of unexpected reservoirs.

Natural features such as shrubbery and tree stumps can also collect water, and they may be more difficult to remedy.

Keep dense shrubs thinned and pruned.

Increasing the air flow can make these areas less attractive. If removing a tree stump is impractical, a professional can guide you in proper treatment.

Athleisure Trend Let’s You Look Good in Casual Clothes

(StatePoint) From fitness conscious consumers to busy moms who are always on the go, casual athletic attire is becoming a socially acceptable and on-trend style. In fact, it’s so popular, it carries its own name: “athleisure.”

CHILDREN’S CHOIR TRAVELS FROM AFRICA WITH INSPIRING STORY OF HOPE Chicago, Ill.—The Watoto Children’s Choir, a group of 18 orphans from Uganda, will continue its six-month U.S. tour in the Chicago area July 7-11 featuring a brand new concert, Signs & Wonders.

The concert will feature worship songs that share the stories of the children and the hope they have because of God’s love. All performances are free and open to the public.

Since 1994, Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled the world sharing the plight of Africa’s orphaned children. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been rescued and now live in a Watoto village. Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa.

The Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Justice will host it’s “Redefine Your Legacy” event on Saturday, July 22, 2017. The inaugural reception will be hosted by former FOX news anchor and current Chicago Police Department, Communications Director Robin Robinson to benefit the Darren B. Easterling Center for Restorative Practices (the Center). The event is being held at CityPoint Loft located at 110 E. 23rd Street and will serve to bring together community and organizational leaders, survivors of violent crimes as well as some innovative thinkers—all seeking to end the overwhelming cycle of violence in the city.

Many of Chicago’s staunchest advocates in the areas of restorative justice and trauma and victim centered recovery, who are committed to ending the cycle of gun-violence, are expected to attend this opening event, which will include a jazz trio, cocktails, hearty hor d’oeuvres and a silent auction.

The Center is a recent recipient of the 2017 Chicago Fund for Safe and Peaceful Communities grant to facilitate summer programming in one of Chicago’s most underserved communities.
