PROGRAM TEACHES SENIORS TO
‘CHECK, CHANGE AND CONTROL’ By Christopher Shuttlesworth
Five years ago, the American Heart Association created a health program entitled ‘Check, Change, Control’, which is designed to teach seniors about healthy eating, exercising methods and how to manage their blood pressure. Over the course of five years, 300 Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) seniors have completed the four-month program, and 77 percent of CHA seniors celebrated a five percent reduction in heart disease during the completion of the 2017 program on July 7, 2017, at the Charles Hayes Center located at 4859 S Wabash Ave. Santrice R. Martin, who is the senior director of multicultural initiatives for the American Heart Association Midwest, said the program ‘Check, Change, Control’ is mainly about working with seniors who are at a high-risk of heart disease and helping them to either lower their blood pressure or manage it.
