Harlem Fine Arts Show returns to Chicago The Harlem Fine Arts Show is a celebration of African-American artistic history, in the vein of the African American masters including Palmer C. Hayden, Augusta Savage, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, and Ernie Barnes.

(CHICAGO) -- The Harlem Fine Arts Show (HFAS) returns to Chicago this fall, November 16 – 19, at the new $251M state-of-the-art Malcom X College (MXC), in the Illinois Medical District.

The four-day traveling exhibition and sale of contemporary paintings, sculpture and photography is the largest of its kind featuring art from the African Diaspora. The exhibition is open to collectors, art enthusiasts, educators, and professionals and has as its theme, “Fine Art and the Art of Healing.” The Opening Night Gala Reception will be hosted by the North Shore (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.

Special guest for this year’s show will be Ilyasah Shabazz daughter of Malcom X, who will make her first visit to her father’s namesake institution to officially open the show on Thursday, November 16. The third daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz, Shabazz, is an educator, activist,

motivational speaker, and author of award winning publications. She will be at HFAS through Friday, November 17, and be signing copies of her books: X: A Novel, Growing Up X and Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up to Become Malcolm X. The Harlem Fine Arts Show is a celebration of African-American artistic history, in the vein of the African American masters including Palmer C. Hayden, Augusta Savage, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, and Ernie Barnes. This year’s HFAS will showcase over 50 national and international artists, and galleries offering investment-level art at multiple price points. Among the artists in this year’s show are Woodrow Nash (Akron), Kevin “WAK’ Williams (Atlanta), Leroy Campbell (Atlanta), Andrew Nichols (New York). Roderick Vines (Virginia), Jim Byrd (New Jersey), Terry Boykin (Chicago), basket weaver Jery Taylor

(South Carolina), and the legendary Frank Frazier (Dallas). Participating galleries include E&S Gallery (Louisville), Sabree’s Gullah Art Gallery (NOLA), and Water Kolours Fine Art (Memphis).

The HFAS’ multi-city tour kicked off in New York this February with the theme “The Health and Healing Power of Art.” During this year’s, Chicago exhibition HFAS will showcase and celebrate African Americans in the medical field, and raise awareness about medicine as a career choice for young people.

Partnering with HFAS in this effort is the Cook County Physicians Association (CCPA), the Chicago affiliate of the National Medical Association (NMA).

Hydration and Nutrition Food is an enjoyable part of camping, but deciding what to bring will depend on whether you’re backpacking miles to your site or camping near your car, as well as how many days you’ll be gone. If you’re trekking far, be prepared with lightweight and nourishing options. Water is essential but heavy, so check the area for potential natural sources. “Mountaineering” suggests carrying a collapsible water reservoir and purification tablets to ensure water safety. Freeze-dried meals are popular selections, however, no-cook meals with long shelf lives are better in arid regions.

Other possibilities include energy bars, nuts, dried fruits or jerky. Never leave out animal-attracting leftovers, as that could attract unwanted intruders. “Essentials” are called so for a reason. ctor and producer Danny Glover is one of several nationally acclaimed cinematic names to speak this fall at Indiana University Cinema through its Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Series.

“Danny Glover has long championed small films that he believes in, both as an actor and as a producer,” said Jon Vickers, IU Cinema director. “This visit is a unique opportunity to celebrate his socially and artistically important, lesser-known work.”

Glover’s career spans more than 35 years and includes classics like “The Color Purple” and “Lethal Weapon.” Recently, he has been a supporter of the 2017 film “The Good Catholic,” which will be released in September with Glover in a supporting role. Most of “The Good Catholic” was filmed in Bloomington, and the film will be screened here in September.

While at IU, Glover will introduce a film that he has selected to screen at IU Cinema. He will announce the film from the stage.

Before becoming an actor, Glover was a cinephile; what he learned in foreign language films influenced his acting. Since he helped produce the 1990 film “To Sleep With Anger” for director and former IU Cinema guest Charles Burnett, Glover has produced more than 40 films.

Fields’ attack, if it was motivated by racist sentiments, should be treated as an act of domestic terrorism. Here I define domestic terrorism as the use of violence in a political and social context that aims to send a message

to a broader target audience. Like lynching, cross-burning and vandalizing religious sites, incidents of this kind deliberately aim to terrorize people of color and non-Christians.

I consider domestic terrorism a more significant threat than the foreign-masterminded variety, in part because the number of domestic terror attacks on U.S. soil is greater. For example, my report published by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point identified hundreds of domestic terror incidents taking place between 2008 and 2012.

Food Network Culinary Expert Emcees Marriott Event

ood, fun and a chance to show off a cadre of cooking skills from culinary experts will be on tap during the Marriott International’s annual two-day CookSmart Challenge on August 31 and September 1. Semi-finals for the Midwest region will take place at the Downtown Marriott in Chicago located on Magnificent Mile.

Thirty Marriott hourly culinary associates from surrounding states will compete against each other in an elimination style challenge for the chance to win a seat at Marriott’s CookSmart finals this October in Washington, D.C. Marriott’s culinary staff participating in the challenge will undergo two rounds of

eliminations before moving on to the final round. During each round, contestants will be presented with a “mystery basket” which will include two proteins that must be used in the dishes they prepare. After receiving the basket, Marriott’s culinary contestants will have forty-five minutes to select ingredients from a large pantry – much of which will be stocked with fresh local produce and other pantry standards - and to prepare their dishes. After two rounds of eliminations, six contestants will move on to the final round where they will receive their final mystery basket and proteins. of extremist violence, shows that excluding the Orlando nightclub massacre, between 2002-2016, far-right affiliated perpetrators conducted 18 attacks that killed 48 people in the United States. Meanwhile, terrorists motivated by al-Qaida’s or the Islamic State’s ideology killed 45 people in nine attacks.

The Orlando mass shooting, given its mix of apparent motives, is difficult to categorize.

A spontaneous appearance In briefings with law enforcement and policymakers, I have sometimes encountered a tendency to see U.S. right-wing extremists as a monolith. But traditional Ku Klux Klan chapters operate differently than skinhead groups, as do anti-government“patriot” and militia groups and anti-abortion extremists.

Christian Identity groups, which believe Anglo-Saxons and other people of Northern European descent are a chosen people, are distinct too.

Certainly, there is some overlap. But these groups also differ significantly in terms of their recruitment styles, ideologies and whether and how they use violence. Across the board, undermining the threat they pose requires a more sophisticated approach than investigating their criminal acts as suspected hate crimes.

In an ongoing study I’m conducting at the University of Massachusetts Lowell with several students, we have determined that, as it seems to be also in the case of Fields, many attacks inspired by racist or xenophobic

sentiments are spontaneous. That is, no one plans them in advance or targets the victim ahead of time. Instead, chance encounters that enrage the perpetrators trigger these incidents.

Sporadic attacks with high numbers of casualties that are plotted in advance, such as Dylann Roof’s murder of nine African-Americans in a Charleston, South Carolina church, are always big news. More typical incidents of far-right violence tend to draw less attention.

The fatal stabbing of Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Rick Best aboard a train in Portland, Oregon on May 26 seems to be no exception. The alleged killer of these two white men, Jeremy Joseph Christian, attacked them with a knife after they stood up to him for haranguing two young women who appeared to be Muslim, police said. A third injured passenger, Micahel Fletcher, has survived. Much of the media coverage is focused on Christian’s violent and racist background.

Given the spontaneous nature of so much far-right violence, U.S. counterterrorism policies should, in my view, target the dissemination of white supremacist ideology, rather than just identifying planned attacks and monitoring established white supremacy groups.

An iceberg theory The number of violent attacks on U.S. soil inspired by far-right ideology has spiked since the beginning of this century, rising from a yearly average of 70 attacks in the 1990s

to a yearly average of more than 300 since 2001. These incidents have grown even more common since President Donald Trump’s election.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit that researches U.S. extremism, reported 900 bias-related incidents against minorities in the first 10 days after Trump’s election – compared to several dozen in a normal week – and found that many of the harassers invoked the then-president-elect’s name. Similarly, the Anti-Defamation League, a nonprofit that tracks anti-Semitism, recorded an 86 percent rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the first three months of 2017.

Beyond the terror that victimized communities are experiencing, I would argue that this trend reflects a deeper social change in American society.

Murders and other violent attacks perpetrated by U.S. far-right extremists compose the visible tip of an iceberg. The rest of this iceberg is under water and out of sight. It includes hundreds of attacks every year that damage property and intimidate communities, such as the attempted burning in May of an African-American family’s garage in Schodack, New York. The garage was also defaced with racist graffiti.

Terrorism Center at West Point show that the significant growth in far-right violence in recent years is happening at the base of the iceberg. While the main reasons for that are still not clear, it is important to remember that changes in societal norms are usually reflected in behavioral changes. Hence, it is more than reasonable to suspect that extremist individuals engage in such activities because they sense that their views are enjoying growing social legitimacy and acceptance, which is emboldening them to act on their bigotry.

Budget cuts Despite an uptick in far-right violence and the Trump administration’s plan unveiled earlier this year to increase the Department of Homeland Security budget by 6.7 percent to US$44.1 billion in 2018, the White House also proposed to cut spending for programs that fight non-Muslim domestic terrorism.

The federal government has also frozen $10 million in grants aimed at countering domestic violent extremism. This approach is bound to weaken the authorities’ power to monitor farright groups, undercutting public safety.

How many more innocent people like Heather Heyer, who was killed in Fields’ attack – and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Rick Best in Seattle – have to die before the U.S. government starts taking the threat posed by violent white supremacists more seriously?
