CHATHAM BRIDGE OPENING IN CITY OF BLUE ISLAND Blue Island- Blue Island’s Chatham Street Bridge, the vital artery that connects the north and south sides of the city over the Calumet Sag Channel has re-opened. The city-owned bridge, which has undergone an approximately $8 million rehabilitation over the past year, re-opened to vehicular traffic recently following a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by dozens of residents and a large
collection of city and state officials. The reopening of the thoroughfare promises to reduce traffic and congestion, spark Blue Island’s economy by connecting more residents to local businesses and, perhaps most importantly, enhance public safety by providing first responders better access to all areas of the city. The multi-phase project brings sidewalk, lighting, landscaping,
and other improvements along the entire Chatham Street Bridge and includes the bridge being transformed into a pedestrianonly bridge rather than its previous use for cars.Phase III of the Chatham Street Bridge got a major boost recently when the City of Blue Island was awarded a $1.6 million grant as part of the federal Surface Transportation Program (“STP”).
