HSE PROGRAM HELPS ADULT LEARNERS AT SSC

By Christopher Shuttlesworth South Suburban College (SSC), which is located at 15800 S. State St., has been helping adults earn their GED through its HSE program since 1970.

The HSE program helps students develop the skills required to pass the High School Equivalency Exams while the curriculum includes courses in language arts, writing, reading, social studies, science, mathematics, and the U.S. and Illinois Constitutions.

One outstanding student who recently took the HSE course is Paul Hughes, who says the program has helped him see that education opens up doors.

Hughes, 43, who is a South Suburban resident, said he attended the SSC HSE program during the 2016 Fall semester so he could obtain his GED and further his career in business.

“One of the ways it benefited me was that it made me stand up amongst my family and children,” he said. “Everyone knows to get a GED or HS diploma is very difficult to do at some points and to accomplish that is one of the biggest things that has benefited me.” Hughes said he plans to further his education at SSC and is in the process of developing his own start-up

company. He also plans to enroll into SSC in the Fall in preparation towards obtaining an Associate’s Degree in Business.

Matthew Beasland, who is SSC’s dean of adult education, said initially the program was formed to help adults obtain just their GED, but now the college is focused on helping students earn job skills and opportunities and even continue their college education.

According to Beasland, there is a high non-completion rate with high school students, especially in school district 205, which is the Thornton District. He said in the district, there is a 74 percent completion rate and a 24 percent non-completion rate within four years of high school.

“If you think about 24 percent of a high school class then that can be 100 students,” Beasland said. “So, nowadays, the GED is just a stepping stone. You almost need a short-term certificate or a degree after that in order to make a livable wage.”

Registration for the next High School Equivalency and English Language Acquisition classes start on September 11 and continue through September 13 at SSC. For more information, contact the Adult Education Department at (708) 596-2000.

BRIEFLY EDUCATION Back 2 School Illinois Contest Launched CHICAGO - Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low-income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom, recently announced the launch of this year’s “Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School” contest.

Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies, including their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year.

Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated.

The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th.

LAW & POLITICS ACLU REPRESENTS MAN IN CASE WHERE POLICE OBTAINED MONTHS’ WORTH OF CELL PHONE LOCATION INFORMATION WITHOUT A WARRANT WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a landmark case on whether the government needs a warrant to access a person’s cell phone location history. The American Civil Liberties Union is cocounsel in the case, Carpenter v. United States. In 2011, without getting a probable cause warrant, the government obtained from cell service companies months’ worth of phone location records for suspects in a robbery investigation in Detroit. For one suspect, Timothy Carpenter, the records covered 127 days and revealed 12,898 separate points of location data.

After Carpenter was convicted at trial, based in part on the cell phone location evidence, he appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 2–1 that no warrant is required under the Fourth Amendment.

Collins urges governor to sign automatic voter registration into law SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Jacqueline Collins joined representatives of Common Cause Illinois and numerous other activists, advocates and fellow Springfield lawmakers at a press conference in Chicago on June 6, 2017, to commemorate the passage of automatic voter registration in Senate Bill 1933, which passed the General Assembly toward the end of the May legislative session.

Collins said the next step is encouraging people to vote.

“This is indicative of what we can accomplish when we work across the partisan divide,” said Collins, D-Chicago.

“I’ve been challenging potential voters to want to move beyond that apathy and the hopelessness, to understand that the vote is their voice, and voting does matter.”

Senate Bill 1933 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of the General Assembly. It awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

Illinois AFL-CIO Endorses JB Pritzker For Governor Chicago, IL — JB Pritzker was endorsed on June 6, 2017, by the Illinois AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 900,000 union members across the state. The endorsement gives “a powerful force behind his bid to challenge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018,” according to a JB Pritzker press release.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the unusually early move by the Illinois AFL-CIO, coming nine months before the March primary election, is a significant political boost for Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor who has vowed to self-fund his campaign and spend to elect Democratic House and Senate candidates. The union backing gives him much-needed boots on the ground.

From WLS-TV: University of Illinois Labor Professor Bob Bruno says a labor endorsement can also make a big difference in a close primary and general election race.

“Organized labor can build a coalition, it can aggregate votes and it can do education,” said Bruno.

Duckworth Speaks At Rally Against Cuts to Medicaid

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) joined Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Ron Wyden (DOR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) at a rally on June 6, 2017, with disability rights advocates against a $1.4 trillion in cuts to Medicaid which President Donald Trump has proposed in his healthcare repeal bill and budget blueprint. Senator Duckworth warned that the cuts would hurt students across the country who benefit from Medicaid-funded counselors and school nurses and jeopardize the healthcare coverage of both the millions of Veterans who rely on Medicaid and the two-thirds of nursing home residents whose bills are paid by Medicaid.

“This President’s proposed cuts to Medicaid would fall hardest on the people who need it most and that’s unacceptable,” Duckworth said. “It is not only a broken promise to our seniors and those with disabilities who depend on Medicaid to live with dignity and participate as equal members of our society, but also to our veterans, who deserve better than having their critical health coverage stripped away from them.”

By Julianne Malveaux (NNPA Newswire Columnist) When he was running for President of the United States, “45” asked African-Americans what we had to lose by electing him. Embracing the most dystopian view of the African-American community, he attacked our schools, our streets, crime rates, and unemployment and suggested that we were so far down, that electing him could only improve things.

Curiously, he never talked about racism when he talked Julianne Malveaux about the status of African-Americans. He never spoke of hate crimes, police killings, or racist symbols like Confederate flags and Confederate statues. He never denounced some of his most racist supporters, including “former” Klu Kluxer David Duke and alt-right leader Richard Spencer.

No, he just asked what Black folks had to lose by electing him!

We’ve been learning what we have to lose in these nearly five months of 45’s “leadership.” He cynically used HBCU presidents in a photo-op, while cutting education funds that help HBCUs. He has been silent or slow in denouncing racist incidents that have occurred on his watch, including the lynching of Second Lt. Richard Collins III, and the murder of heroes Ricky John Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, who stood up to the rabid racist Jeremy Joseph Christian, as he harassed two young women on a train in Portland (it took him three days to respond tepidly to that incident). As of this writing, two days after a noose was hung in the Smithsonian’s National Museum for African American History and Culture, he has not uttered a syllable of condemnation. These issues don’t appear to be important to him.

Are we surprised, then, that the budget he has submitted to Congress, would eviscerate civil rights protections in literally every area of our lives? Already, Attorney General Jeff Sessions has moved back toward draconian jail sentences for minor crimes, reviewed consent decrees with police departments, looking to loosen them, and suggested that the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department can be smaller. The budget reflects that so clearly that Vanita Gupta, who led the Civil Rights Division under President Obama and now leads the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, says she sees this budget as a “setback” for civil rights.

The new budget calls for folding the Department of Labor Office of Federal Contract Compliance (OFCCP) into the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, although the two agencies do distinctly different work. EEOC investigates civil rights complaints, while OFCCP audits contracts to ensure that employees have equal opportunity in terms of both promotions and pay. The

proposed budget cuts OFCCP by 16 percent and eliminates 130 full-time employees. When the other 470 employees are absorbed into the EEOC, that agency will not get an increased budget despite its expanded mission.

Both agencies have been important in ensuring that civil rights violations are rectified. In 2010, EEOC had more than 20 active cases that involved nooses.

Even as nooses continue to be hung as symbols of intimidation and hate, such as the noose hung at the African American Museum (the second hung at a Smithsonian museum in a week), the agency charged with investigating these complaints would have fewer resources to do so.

Similarly, OFCCP has won money settlements for thousands of employees, and changed employment requirements when those requirements have a discriminatory impact. Women employees at Home Depot were among those receiving monetary settlements because of OFCCP investigations.

At the Department of Education (surprise, surprise), a woman who opposes affirmative action leads the Office of Civil Rights. That office will be cut significantly, limiting its ability to investigate discrimination complaints in school systems. At the Environmental Protection Agency, efforts to look at environmental justice have been eliminated.

From the noose hung at the National Museum of African American History and Culture to the defacing of LeBron James’ home with a racial slur, there is continuing evidence of the persistence of racism in our nation. This racism is emboldened by a national leadership that is silent despite its manifestations. We cannot be surprised. Our 45th president, after all, once said he did not trust African Americans to work on his accounting. He probably would have failed any OFCCP audit, and certainly attracted several housing discrimination lawsuits decades ago.

The president who has been accused of discrimination has the power to ensure that his capitalist cronies face fewer accusations by weakening civil rights enforcement. What did African Americans lose when “45” was elected? Among other things, we (and others) lost civil rights protections!

Organizations Awarded $1 Million in Grants to Support Chicago Entrepreneurs targeted and intentional about supporting entrepreneurs from marginalized communities,” Jimmy Odom, Director of Inclusive Entrepreneurship for ChicagoNEXT said. “This Blackstone Challenge cohort will work together to make sure a diverse representation of entrepreneurs get the resources they need.”

The Blackstone Challenge will be the initial focus of the ChicagoNEXT Inclusive Entrepreneurship Leadership Council, whose thirteen members, composed of civic and business leaders, were announced last month. The council will offer strategic direction for the program, mentor and advise the grantees, and use their convening power to support regional program events.

Bunker Labs, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bunker Labs, an organization that helps military veterans launch

and grow businesses through educational programs and networking, to create Guided Virtual Cohorts, a remote, high touch version of the successful Bunker in a Box platform, and the CEOcircle Program, a program which provides additional resources to later stage founders.

1871, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support 1871, a hub for digital startup entrepreneurship in Chicago, to create the 1871 Community Curriculum Project that will digitalize content from its workshops and events to make it accessible to a wider audience of entrepreneurs.

UI Labs, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support UI Labs, an innovation accelerator that brings together partners from “university + industry,” to create the City Digital: Inclusive Entrepreneurship for Collaborative Innovation, a partnership between City Digital and Colony 5 to help community based startups tackle complex urban challenges and explore ideas on smart city developments through entrepreneurship.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago (“WBC”) recently announced the grantees of the Blackstone Inclusive Entrepreneurship Challenge (“Blackstone Challenge”). For the first year of the Blackstone Challenge, eight organizations were awarded grants totaling $1 million to connect diverse Chicago entrepreneurs, particularly people of color, immigrants, women and veterans, with resources to help scale and grow their businesses. These grants are part of a $3 million commitment made in January 2017.

“By investing in organizations that support diverse entrepreneurs we create economic opportunities that reach all parts of Chicago,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are incredibly grateful that Chicago was chosen as the pilot city for the Blackstone Challenge program, and look forward to seeing it generate jobs and growth as we build on its success.”

Nearly 50 organizations submitted proposals, of which the top eight were selected to receive grants. Starting next month, the grantees will focus on deploying strategies to recruit, engage and support diverse entrepreneurs throughout the Chicagoland area. At the end of the first year, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago will announce the process to distribute an additional $2 million in grant funding.

Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes all draw blood from their hosts at some point in their lifecycle, and Beavers said spotting the adults is the easiest way to tell if your pet has been affected.

• Fleas: Usually, adult fleas are easy to see when they jump on you or your pet, or when you see them crawling along on your pet’s skin. Beavers said that if your pet is being bitten by fleas, they will often repeatedly scratch and groom themselves.

• Ticks: Ticks crawl about on vegetation, waiting for potential hosts – like pets – to walk by.

They attach themselves to a host for days at a time, and most swell up as they feed. Ticks can transmit diseases like Lyme disease, which in rare cases can result in kidney failure for dogs, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which is seen in dogs and sometimes in cats. Beavers said that the disease pathogens are often transmitted within the first 24 hours, so it’s best to remove the tick quickly.

Check your pets for ticks daily, especially after they spend time outdoors.

• Mosquitoes: Just like people, pets can fall victim to mosquitoes. Mosquito bites on pets aren’t always obvious. However, some mosquitoes can transmit potentially fatal heartworm disease. While it may be tempting, do not use human mosquito repellents on your pet. You may see

mosquitoes flying around or landing on your pet when it’s hot outside, so be on the lookout.

A BOUT WITH DOUBT, II When God guides us, we have within us everything that we need to be laser focused and take radical action in the right direction.

However, every time we doubt, we create an alternate path that leads us away from the direction of God’s guidance. Double-mindedness makes us unstable in every way. When we doubt, when we hesitate, if we are lucky, we are only second-guessing ourselves. Yet somehow, I get the sense that sometimes when we doubt, we are not only second-guessing ourselves, we are also second-guessing God. There is something to be said for not only not having enough faith and conviction in ourselves, but also not having enough faith and conviction in God. This is why one great thinker suggested that our faith in God is measured by our confidence in self.

Our doubt means there is some uncertainty or confusion around what we want to do and whether we are able to do it. Of ourselves, we may not be able to do it but in Christ, it is a whole different ball game. When we doubt, we are being of two minds. James 1:2 challenges us to count it nothing but joy when we face the difficulty that comes with doubt. Through this scripture we may consider that when we are going through the difficulty of doubt, we must keep going and discover the ability to consider the doubt and reframe it with faith. The writer goes on to say, “…because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance;” Therefore, if we can consider it joy, it will be a springboard to our faith. When our faith is enriched, it helps to develop more endurance and joy.

When you are wrestling with a bear, you do not stop when you are tired, you only stop when the bear gets tired. It is necessary to have some endurance, tenacity, determination, and perseverance because you are going to face some trials. You may question whether you can make it through but the only question is whether or not you will face those trials with joy because joy puts you in a certain mindset, on a certain path, and gives you a certain perspective through which to see your world.

Alternatively, when you cannot face it with joy and you face it from within the context of the struggle, we find ourselves having a little more to be in doubt about.
