nited States Congressman Bobby L. Rush recently hosted his first Congressional District Military Academy Day and informed students and parents of the educational opportunities at the U.S. Service Academies.

The five service academies for students to consider include the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

If selected as a service academy cadet, students receive a first-class education and a four-year scholarship, graduating as a commissioned officer ready for military service.

During the Congressional District Military Academy Day, Rico Hilliard,

who is a 2nd Lieutenant and admission advisor for the United States Air Force Academy, said he didn’t even know anything about the Air Force Academy until a representative shared their own experience with him.

“Imagine, someone from inner-city Washington D.C. who didn’t even think about the opportunities that the Air Force had, but I took advantage of them and studied abroad in Portugal and flew a TA50 aircraft, which was great,” Hilliard said.

He explained that during his four years at the academy he was able to travel overseas to study Political Science and obtain a minor in Portuguese.

“For Political Science, I had the opportunity to go to Hong Kong for a month where I studied Political Theory and Political Philosophy with people all across Asia,” Hilliard said. “In addition, I studied in Portugal for four months and was able to earn my Minor degree in Portuguese.”

Three Emerging Chicago Artists Win $15,000 in Services CHICAGO – Leading law firm for innovators, Creative Genius Law (CGL) selected three emerging Chicago artists as recipients for their inaugural We’ll Work for Art program. Limited to artists whose work focuses on a positive portrayal of underrepresented communities, have less than 10 years of experience in their prospective industry and are focused on a primary career as a visual artist, submissions opened at the end of June and closed mid August. Each selected artist will receive legal services up to $5,000 each including business entity formation and counsel, contract review, drafting or negotiation, trademark counsel and registrations, copyright counsel and registrations, and outside general counsel services in exchange for one piece of art.

This years’ selected artists are: VersAnnette Blackman-Bosia, Stephanie Graham and Colleen McCulla.

He continued to say, “this was awesome because it was an opportunity to be away from the academy and wear regular civilian clothes every day and interact with Europeans.”

Captain Timothy Berry, Great Lakes Outreach Officer (USMA 2013) United States Military Academy told each student that one of the biggest things that he took away from the Military Academy was the importance of building relationships and bonds with people from all walks of life.

“This will nurture you, help you grow and become a better person, officer and citizen,” Berry said.

Berry noted that it’s important for each student to hone

their reading and writing skills because communication is important in all academies. He also shared with the students that during their stay at the Academy, their superiors will put them in uncomfortable situations to bring out the best in them.

“A lot of these academies are going to ask a whole lot of you,” Berry said. “They’re going to ask you to do things that you’re not comfortable to do so you need to make sure you have something within yourself that you can take away from the institution.”

He noted that the application process is competitive for each academy, but the investment is worth it.

ENGLEWOOD SQUARE CELEBRATES ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY CHICAGO – It’s one of Chicago’s greatest success stories. Englewood Square celebrated its one-year anniversary recently and Leon Walker, managing partner of DL3 Realty and the shopping center’s developer, marked the milestone at a press conference with an update on the project’s impact.

“Thanks to the City of Chicago and the commitment by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Englewood Square is a miracle on 63rd and Halsted Streets,” said Walker.

“Englewood Square is not just a place for neighbors to shop but a place that strengthens a community,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. “With public and private investments, we are ensuring Englewood residents have high-quality options for food and services that spur greater development and create lasting prosperity.”

The historic site, once known as Chicago’s busiest commerce center outside of the Loop, sits on 5.5 acres of land and features 50,000 square feet of retail space.

Its opening attracted major business to the community, including Whole Foods, Starbucks, Chipotle, Villa Sports and Oak Street Health. PNC Bank opens this fall.

As a part of the program, PNC Bank honored Asiaha Butler, president of R.A.G.E. (Residents Association of Greater Englewood), and entrepreneurs Edward and Jennifer Alexander of Island Indulgences, Jordan Buckner of Tea Squares, Iris Patterson of Iris Botanicals, and Chrishon Lampley of Love Cork Screw.

Internationally-renowned artist Samuel Akainyah unveiled his first painting in 10 years, entitled “The Art of Enterprise,” featuring Chicago Founder Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, former Mayor Harold Washington and President Barack Obama. Proceeds from the sale of lithographs and posters of the painting will support Teamwork Englewood’s Quality of Life Business Plan Competition which promotes enterprise in Englewood.

In addition to the dozens of construction jobs created to develop Englewood Square, Walker reported that its tenants created more than 200 jobs, mostly for Englewood residents, and supported more than 50 local businesses and entrepreneurs.

Starbucks Englewood created 20 new jobs for residents while serving as a place for community building and dialog. The store offers a unique instore job skills training program for local youth in partnership with Teamwork Englewood, and has invested in the growth of local women and minorityowned businesses, like Laine’s Bake Shop.

Chipotle has hired 73 residents of Englewood, given $3,700 to local nonprofits and more than $6,000 in food donations, supporting the Bud Biliken Parade, an anti-women’s violence initiative, prom dresses for Englewood students, and has partnered with Team Englewood and Englewood Community Academy High School on student programs.

Whole Foods Market Englewood has brought access to more fresh foods and healthy eating education for Englewood residents. The company also has supported Englewood suppliers, such as Tea Squares, Imani’s Original Bean Pies and Justice of the Pies, which have expanded into other Whole Foods in the Chicago area.

Oak Street Health’s Englewood center employs 30 Chicagoans. The organization reports that local patients receive free travel to and from the center, where they enjoy a full slate of health-oriented programming five days a week in addition to receiving medical care. Patients at the Englewood facility have doctor visits that are twice as long as the national average.

The three square miles that comprise Chicago’s Englewood community were annexed to the city of Chicago in 1889. For years, 63rd and Halsted was the community’s centerpiece: a well-known commercial center, with three major department stores and hundreds of smaller businesses, second only to Chicago’s loop in both popularity and profitability.

While President Barack Obama and Congresswoman Maxine Waters sent birthday greetings, Ambassador Andrew Young, Martin Luther King III and Dr. Martin L. King Jr’s sister, Dr. Christine King Farris were among celebrities and dignitaries on hand in Atlanta to acknowledge the 96th birthday of civil rights leader and former King confidant, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery.

The historical evening was made most memorable when OWN’s “Greenleaf” star and singer Keith David; Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” star and vocalist, Cassandra “Cassi” Davis; and gospel superstar, Yolanda Adams, mesmerized the audience with a stellar musical tribute that encapsulated the life of the well-loved nonagenarian. The Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute (Lowery Institute) hosted the gala which also featured Lowery Institute Change Agents packing the stage to honor the Dr. Lowery with raised fists and taking a knee.

Themed “Grounded in History: Soaring Towards The Future,” the Lowery Institute also awarded movie producer, Will Packer, attorney Angela Rye, and activist Rev. William Barber, for continuing the national dialogue in support of justice and human rights, and keeping the Lowery’s legacies alive as agents of change in their respective fields.

The Chicago Citizen and the Illinois Press Association (IPA) recently honored the life and legacy of the Citizen’s Former Publisher William Garth, Sr. at The DuSable Museum of African American History, located on 740 E. 56th Place.

Darrell Garth thanked each elected official, the DuSable Museum representatives, and the Illinois Press Association and family members for paying their respect.

“My father was a great person and would have been honored to have seen everyone here tonight,” Garth said.

Mike Kramer, president at Law Bulletin Media, said it was a privilege to serve and learn from William Garth, who he says was one of the most honest and successful men he’s ever known.

As a tribute to his business acumen, Garth became the first Black person to be elected President of the Illinois Press Association (IPA), the state’s largest newspaper association and the office trade organization for Illinois’ weekly daily newspapers.

Garth is also the second Black person in the nation elected president of a statewide press association. He served on the Board of the Government Affairs Committee of the Illinois Press Association and as a board member for more than 15 years.

As former chairman of the Chatham Business Association, Garth led the organization in creating opportunities, inroads and programs to benefit and ensure the prosperity, economic strength and excellence of all businesses in the Chatham area and its a life-time member of the NAACP and a member of the Chatham surrounding communities.

In response to this report the interim NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a released statement, “In a time when white supremacists are marching down city streets with loaded weapons and tiki torches- organizing rallies of terror around the country - it comes as a great shock that the FBI would decide to target black identity groups protesting police brutality and their right to exist free of harm as a threat.

“Sadly, this report comes as no surprise from an organization that has a history of targeting black civil rights groups and leaders, including wiretapping Martin Luther King Jr. and others fighting for civil rights in the 1960s.

“We do have a real threat in the United States and it’s the rise of rightwing extremists, white nationalists and white supremacists, who have been emboldened by this administration. In light of this report, the NAACP is resolved to double down on our efforts to advance the rights of black Americans and people of color across this country. We remain steadfast and immovable in our fight for justice and equality - and we are not afraid,” he said.

Five Everyday Reasons You Need To Know Math (NAPSI)—Many people may shy away from the subject of math, but it is important to understand math as it plays an instrumental role in making good financial decisions. A new University of Phoenix® survey found that 28 percent of respondents reported they were not confident that their current math skills are strong enough to succeed in planning for retirement and 24 percent stated they are not confident in their skills to succeed in understanding tuition assistance and save or pay for college. Fake Insurance Tax Form Scam Aims at Stealing Data from Tax Pros, Clients WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service recently alerted tax professionals and their clients to a fake insurance tax form scam that is being used to access annuity and life insurance accounts.

Cybercriminals currently are combining several tactics to create a complex scheme through which both tax professionals and taxpayers have been victimized.

There may be variations but here’s how one scam works: The cybercriminal, impersonating a legitimate cloudbased storage provider, entices a tax professional with a phishing email.

The tax professional, thinking they are interacting with the legitimate cloudbased storage provider, provides their email credentials including username and password.

With access to the tax professional’s account, the cybercriminal steals client email addresses. The cybercriminal then impersonates the tax professional and sends emails to their clients, attaching a fake IRS insurance form and requesting that the form be completed and returned.

The cybercriminal receives replies by fax and/or by an email very similar to the tax professional’s email – using a different email service provider or a slight variation to the tax pro’s address.

The subject line varies but may be “urgent information” or a similar request.

The awkwardly worded text of the email states: Dear Life Insurance Policy Owner, Kindly fill the form attached for your Life insurance or Annuity contract details and fax back to us for processing in order to avoid multiple (sic) tax bill (sic).

The cybercriminal, using data from the completed form, impersonates the client and contacts the individual’s insurance company. The cybercriminal then attempts to obtain a loan or make a withdrawal from those accounts.

The IRS reminds tax professionals to be aware of phishing emails, free offers and other common tricks by scammers.

Those tax professionals who have data breaches should contact the IRS immediately through their Stakeholder Liaison. See Data Theft Information for Tax Professionals.

Individuals who receive the insurance tax form scam email should forward it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it.

Individuals who completed and returned the fake tax form should contact their insurance carrier for assistance.

Ella Fitzgerald protégé Carmen Bradford joins Music Institute Artist-in-Residence Tammy McCann and other faculty from the Music Institute Jazz Studies program for a lineup of tunes from the Great American Songbook. Bradford sang with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1982 to 1990 and has performed around the world with Thad Jones, David Murray, and other jazz celebrities.

McCann, who appears regularly at jazz venues around Chicago, has performed with Chicago’s own Ramsey Lewis and Von Freeman and toured with Ray Charles as a

New Book Discusses How Christians Can Avoid Going Into Debt NASHVILLE, Tenn.,-- “God has given each of us a portion of Christ’s anointing, by which we are to live and succeed in life,” says Pastor Terrance Levise Turner. The prophet writer of Isaiah shared that just as the rain and snow fulfill the purpose for which each is sent, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation.

If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges. Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk?

Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your selftalk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you? Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ?

Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson.
