EDUCATION High School Students Cook Up Change

On Thursday, Nov. 16 at the Skyline Lofts at the Bridgeport Art Center located on 1200 W. 35th St., Chicago, IL 60609 Chicago Public High Schools will be Cooking up Change as part of Healthy Schools Campaign’s annual healthy cooking contest and fundraiser.

Cooking up Change is a culinary competition founded

by Healthy Schools Campaign that challenges student chefs to create healthy and delicious school meals that their peers will enjoy, while meeting strict nutritional standards and a tight budget, about $1 per meal. The winning team’s dishes will be served at all Chicago Public Schools next semester and the students will also win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June 2018 to compete at the national competition against other cities across the U.S.

HEALTH New Health Promotion Website Helps Build Additional Healthy Communities Washington, D.C. - A new website, available at Partnering4Health.org, will assist communities in decreasing the risks of chronic diseases and improve the public’s health. The website includes a comprehensive report, snapshots of the local community projects, an online training course, an inspiring video story, toolkits, and other materials.

From 2014 to 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provided five national organizations funding to work with 94 urban, rural, and tribal communities for implementing sustainable changes that support healthy communities and lifestyles.

The website incorporates resources from the project and five national organizations - American Heart Association (AHA), American Planning Association (APA), National WIC Association (NWA), Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE).

A nine-part online course allows users to review key elements for sustaining the healthy community movement, by including evidence-based planning approaches to policy, systems and environmental change. The course, which can be completed in 1.5 hours or less, includes engaging videos, interactive activities at the end of each topic, and a course evaluation. LAW & POLITICS Morningstar: Bright Start Upgraded to Gold

CHICAGO – Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs recently announced that Illinois’ Bright Start College Savings Program is now, for the first time in history, a Goldrated program, according to Morningstar.

Morningstar, which evaluates and rates college savings plans, released its results recently, rating Bright Start a “Gold-Rated Fund”. According to Morningstar, Bright Start is one of the four highest rated plans in the country.

“We are always looking for ways to improve our 529 programs and make them the best in the country,” Treasurer Frerichs said. “Over the last two years, I took steps to ensure that Bright Start offered high quality investment options at a low cost. We are grateful that Morningstar continues to hold the Illinois plans in high esteem.”

The Former Reese Hospital, Revitalized as the Burnham Lakefront

By Christopher Shuttlesworth The former Reese hospital property will soon be re-transformed into the Burnham Lakefront site, which will serve as a catalyst for growth in neighborhoods like South Shore, Jackson Park, Bronzeville, Hyde Park and others.

Scott Goodman, who is the lead developer for the Burnham Lakefront site, explained that the property was set to be called the Olympic Village, but due to Chicago being outbid by Brazil for the 2016 Summer Olympics, it remained vacant until now.

“We think that with so many things within the global business market and the demand of space, it’s a unique time for this unique Lakefront property to be developed,” Goodman said.

He continued to say that the property is important for local Chicagoans because the overreaching goal is to bring more quality jobs to the community and it will compliment many surrounding museums and institutions like the upcoming Obama Presidential Center.

The Burnham Lakefront will be 100-acres of land with an additional 144 acres for connected housing opportunity and 14 million square feet of new development that includes office space, housing, retail, open space, data centers and amenities, according to a Burnham Lakefront press release.

“This site is directly adjacent to the

McCormick Place and will be well served by public transportation, highways and will have tremendous connectivity in terms of fiber,” Goodman said.

“The site will also continue the fabric of the city that creates jobs, more community spaces and encourage greater use of the Lakefront and business development.”

The Burnham Lakefront size and location will also help create a SmartGrid or District Energy system, which would bring renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal) and provide energy sources for the project.

“It will be fully sustainable in terms of power and we think to be able to put together 30 to 100 acres of land allows us to build an entirely forward-looking, modern neighborhood [that will] be surrounded by rich-cultured communities,” Goodman said.

He added the project will take up to 10-12 years to be completed, but the re-development agreement with the city of Chicago will soon be finalized in hopes of working on the site in the coming months.

Conditions for pretrial release set by Cook County judges punish people while they await trial, as described in a report released by the Chicago Community Bond Fund (CCBF) on October 24. The report, entitled Punishment is Not a “Service”: The Injustice of Pretrial Conditions in Cook County, documents the harmful impacts of pretrial conditions, such as electronic monitoring, curfews, monthly check-ins, and drug testing, that restrict the liberty of people who have not been convicted of any crime.

These conditions are supposedly intended to ensure that accused people come back to court and avoid re-arrest. However, they can have significant negative impacts on a person’s access to housing, jobs, and medical care, and their ability to support their children and families, according to a CCBF press release. The report recommends that any services provided by the court be supportive rather than punitive--such as, assistance with transportation and childcare to help people attend court dates, flexible court dates to accommodate work schedules, and referrals to truly supportive services based on individual needs.

The report comes in the wake of Chief Judge Timothy Evans’ General Order 18.8A, which went into effect on September 18th. The order instructs bond court judges to set money bonds only in amounts that people can afford. While implementation of the order has reduced the number of unpayable bonds set by judges, judges in Cook County not only continue to set high monetary bonds in dozens of cases, they are also imposing restrictive conditions on people’s pretrial release that replicate the harms of unpayable bonds, the CCBF press release reports.

Skills for Chicagoland’s Future, a public-private partnership located at 191 N. Wacker Drive, recently celebrated the jobplacement of more than 4,500 Chicagoland job-seekers since Skills launched five years ago. Over 80 percent of the job seekers that Skills placed in 2016 were African American.

Almost, 35 percent of job-placed candidates were from Chicago neighborhoods with unemployment rates of more than 17 percent, according to a Skills press release. Some of the neighborhoods were Auburn-Gresham, Austin, Chatham, South Shore, South Chicago, West Garfield Park, West Pullman, Roseland, Woodlawn and Avalon Park.

Skills also recently announced the results of a two-year independent study, which quantified Skills’ long-term economic impact on job seekers and tracked their like earnings and employment status.

One finding highlighted that job-seekers who were hired through Skills earned, on average, $6,120 more per year than the comparison group, according to a Skills press release.

Cherita Ellens, vice president of Business Operations and Communications at Skills, said the organization tested multiple job models, but their current model in terms of being more demand driven in learning about employers’ needs first became more effective in the hiring process.

“We work with the employers as our clients first because

they’re the ones with the jobs,” Ellens said. “We want to start with the jobs and we have learned that by having these deep relationships with employers helps us become better advocates for the job-seekers.”

She continued to explain that Skills’ job model allows them to learn more about the culture of the job organization, which better helps them match job-seekers with the right organization.

She said while Skills analyzes employers first, they still take time to interview job-seekers before sending them to an official job interview.

“We coach them and make sure they understand what the companies are looking for,” she said. “Some of the [jobseekers] have not interviewed in a long time so they’re a little rusty or nervous because the interview means more to them than anyone would ever know.”

Ellens said she advises all job-seekers to be “ready” for their interviews by having some background information on the employer and knowledge about the potential job role.

Since 2012, Skills organization has grown from working with five to 60 employers. They include the University of Chicago Medicine, Chase, Walgreens, CVW, Old Navy and O’Hare Airport.

NNPA Second Vice Chairman Bernal E. Smith II Dies

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is mourning the death of NNPA Second Vice Chairman Bernal E. Smith II, who died on Sunday, October 22.

He was 45. Smith was publisher of the New Tri-State Defender in Memphis, TN. Smith had previously served as a member of the NNPA Board of Directors.

In a released statement, Dorothy R. Leavell, chairman of the NNPA said, “I am personally saddened by Bernal’s death. We were optimistic about the many contributions he would make to the Fourth Estate. He was young, energetic, and full of Bernal E. Smith II great ideas. We were looking forward to implementing some of those concepts through NNPA as we worked to strengthen and advance the Black Press. It’s a great loss to our institution and we will sorely miss him. We send our deepest condolences to his family, Tri-State Defender staff, Black Media Properties, as well as the entire city of Memphis.”

Andrea Zopp named CEO of World Business Chicago by Mayor Rahm Emanuel

Chicago United recently announced that 2005 Business Leaders of Color honoree, Andrea Zopp, has been named CEO of World Business Chicago by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

According to a press release by the City of Chicago, Zopp will lead efforts to drive inclusive and economic growth in neighborhoods throughout Chicago, with a particular focus on neighborhoods on the South and West sides. In this role, Zopp will take a broader focus on improving Chicago neighborhoods to bring lasting change.

In her previous role as deputy mayor and chief neighborhood officer, Zopp was charged with neighborhood economic development.

Personal finance website GOBankingRates surveyed over 2,500 adults across the U.S. to find how much debt the average American has. GOBankingRates asked the following six questions: How much debt do you currently have?

Optimism among veteran small business owners is outpacing the nation’s small businesses as a whole, according to this year’s Allstate/USA Today Small Business Barometer.i The annual index study released new data ahead of Veterans Day showing that veteran entrepreneurs’ optimism is at a resounding 99 out of 100 — which the Barometer found is a reflection of veterans’ overall success in areas such as business performance, hiring and growth.

In fact, nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of veterans say there’s never been a better time to own a small business. And while the numbers are high among all small business owners — 64 percent say the best time to own a business is now and 92 percent report high optimism — veterans’ positive views of the small business climate are consistent across the board.

“Being in the military challenges you to become your best self, and some of the skills it teaches — respect, organization, discipline and loyalty — are exactly the kind of traits it takes to successfully run your own small business,” said Steven James, an Allstate agency owner for the past nine years and a 10-year military veteran. “Owning two small businesses also allows me to continue pursuing my passion for giving back and serving the community I call home.”

The Small Business Barometer, in its second year, combines a national survey of nearly 2,800 small-business owners with federal economic data to provide a comprehensive profile of the sector across the United States and in 25 of its largest cities. For the first time this year, the Barometer oversampled veteran business owners to get a pulse of this influential group.

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Veterans Business Development says there is approximately one veteran-owned firm for every 10 veterans; veterans are 45 percent more likely than nonveterans to be self-employed; and more than one-third of veteran business owners say that while on active duty, they learned skills that directly transfer to the business world.

The Barometer results reveal that nearly half (45 percent) of all small-business owners employ veterans, and more than a third (35 percent) have veteran hiring practices. Why is that? Respondents gave a number of reasons, but a few stood out: 51 percent said they have veteran hiring practices because it’s the right thing to do; 46 percent said it’s because of transferable traits and skills; and 41 percent of all smallbusiness owners said they value veterans’ teamwork skills.

In addition to selling business insurance products, Allstate works with a network of more than 10,000 small businesses across the country who use veteran-friendly hiring practices.

Through its Joining Forces for Good Licensing Program, for example, Allstate provides veterans and their spouses with the necessary tools to translate their skills into a career as a licensed sales professional for an Allstate agency owner — and with bonuses for passing their property and casualty licensing test, even if they don’t end up in an Allstate agency.

How Churches Can Reduce Their Risk for Money Thefts Volunteers and Employees According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, nonprofits lose an average of 5-7 percent of their revenues each year to fraud and theft.

Brotherhood Mutual, an insurance company specializing in serving religious institutions, says that over $39 billion was stolen from churches in 2014, surpassing the $35 billion churches spent on missionary work in the same period.

Certified public accountant Lisa London, author of the globally Lisa London recognized guide Using QuickBooks Online for Small Nonprofits and Churches, says the thieves are usually the people you would least suspect. Their crimes require motives, means, and opportunity. Not much can be done about motives, London notes, but churches and nonprofits can do something about limiting the means and opportunities that may be present for the more than 62 million people who volunteer each year for their churches, local PTAs, Little Leagues, homeowner associations, and civic groups who may be asked to handle money for the organization or a fundraiser.

London’s mission is two-fold: to reduce the fraud and its

impact on nonprofits and to take the fear out of being a volunteer tasked with handling money.

London has three simple steps any size organization can take to keep the money safe and the employees and volunteers above suspicion. BUT WHO DO YOU SAY I AM? One afternoon, after doing something pretty miraculous, Jesus and his disciples were traveling on to another village.

In between the steps of their journey, Jesus initiated what seemed to be a fairly innocuous conversation, which he began innocently enough by asking the question, “Who do people say that I am?”

The disciples answered according to what the people had been saying about this man of mystery. Then Jesus raised the stakes and asked, “But who do you say that I am?” to which one of the disciples replied, “You are the Messiah.”

What would happen if we would ask the same questions of the people in our circle of influence? Note, it is not that we should be overly consumed with what other people think about us. However, there is something to be learned from the conversations being generated based upon the fruits we produce. This kind of feedback provides insight into how consistently we may be living out and being known by the fruit of the Spirit.

More importantly, we have to remember to live from the effluence of our spiritual nature. As children of God, we have been given authority over what we can produce. We have the ability to determine what we think, how we feel, what we do, and how we respond.

This also means that we must take complete and total responsibility for everything in our life. As divine beings, we are responsible and accountable for what we create. God lives in us as our true spiritual nature and desires to express through each of us as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

No excuses, just the execution that comes with being true to who we are and whose we are. We will be known by our fruit, so let’s really give them something to talk about.
