ADVOCATE SUPPORTS CHICAGO UNEMPLOYED WOMEN WITH HEALTH CARE INITIATIVE

JPMorgan Chase and Advocate Health Care leadership, elected officials and community leaders joined together on April 20, 2017 at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, located on 836 W. Wellington Ave., to celebrate more than 90 Healthcare Workforce Collaborative graduates.

“This health care-focused, skills-based training initiative connects Chicagoland’s underemployed and unemployed residents with high-quality, in-demand jobs, like pharmacy technicians or certified nursing assistants, in the rapidly growing health care industry.

After successful completion of the training program and licensing exam, all participants are guaranteed an interview with Advocate and job placement assistance,” according to an Advocate Health Care press release. The initiative has trained more than 200 participants and has a 90% graduation rate.

of Advocate’s Healthcare Workforce Collaborative, said it was always her dream to be a nursing assistant, but didn’t have the adequate funds to attend training school.

Ward said when she heard of Advocate’s Healthcare Workforce, she immediately got on board.

“This program has added to my life in a very positive way because this was always something that I always looked forward to doing,” Ward said.

“This was a career step for me and for this program to come along at the time that it did was a blessing for my family and myself.”She said no one should join the Advocate’s Healthcare Workforce Collaborative, unless they are committed to serving others.

“You have to have the heart in order to do this type of work,” Ward said. “But if this is what you’ve been thinking about and if this is where your heart is, then women should join the program because it’s not the average program that gives you a job. I’ve formed relationships and I appreciate that the Advocate is concerned about me going further in my career.”

Stratton Passes Legislation to Study State’s Law Enforcement Records

Melvin King began his passion as an artist at ten years old. King said one of the significant ways that people are intrigued and blessed by his artwork is through his paintings of church scenes and religious organizations. Some of his early influencers were artists such as Clifford Lee, Pablo Picasso, Paul Kee and more.

the time. But King said he began to get heavily attached to artwork by White artists like Clifford Lee, Pablo Picasso, Paul Kee and more.

“I used to go to a lot of art fairs when I was young,” King said. “My teachers used to take me, but they were basically all white shows. I didn’t know any Black artists and when I went on the Northside to the art shows I became attached to it. And it was something that I wanted to do.”

King, who was also raised in church, said he would witness and minister to people outside of the church about Jesus Christ.

“I start using my art work as a way to get the word of God out,” King said. “I started the artwork and painting as a hobby. I didn’t know it was really worth anything…it was something that I was doing as a passion. But then a lot of people started asking me to bring my artwork to their studios and galleries, mostly White

people.”

He said as his artwork began to flourish in the industry, he began to wonder how he would balance his passion as an artist and his ministry to God’s people.

“I said now how I’m going to have time to witness to people on the streets,” King said.

“Well, I’m going to start putting my messages of God in the paintings. That’s what the Lord showed me.”

King said through his new found religious paintings, many people and religious organizations were blessed and became even more intrigued by his artwork.

“On the other hand some other organizations didn’t want anything about Jesus and they made that clear to me,” he said. “Matter of fact, some of them wanted me to take the name of Jesus out of the paintings. That’s when

I found out that everyone is not a Christian. But Moody Bible Institute, universities and different churches became very interested.”

King explained that he became attached to painting church scenes by consistently going to churches and looking around at the scenery and watching the people and noticing the outfits they wore.

“I became attached to church scenes because I could witness to people through my paint and brush,” said King.

He decided to have his art displayed in the Chatham neighborhood. “I think it’s something that we’ve been missing out on,” he said. “I found out that there are so many young Black artists who never had anybody to encourage them to do art. I feel that the Lord has chosen me to be one of the people to open up the venue for Black artists, young and old,” he said.

Alderman Beale Introduces Ordinance Calling for Alternative Asphalt Mixes Emphasizes need for more durable streets and more effective ways to tackle potholes Chicago, IL – 9th Ward Alderman Anthony Beale is sponsoring an ordinance to save money for Chicago taxpayers and improve the quality and durability of asphalt paving projects in the city. In 2015, the City spent more than $135 million for asphalt paving projects.

Alderman Beale believes that this cost can be reduced significantly by using new alternative hot mix asphalts already in use in other parts of the country.

“It’s easy to see that the materials currently being used to pave and patch our streets are expensive and

don’t last,” said Alderman Beale. “But there are simple steps the City of Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) can take to employ some alternative hot mix asphalts being used in other cities. These alternatives will reduce costs, enhance the durability of Chicago’s streets, and improve the overall quality of paving projects. At a time when our resources are limited and our streets are in constant need of repair, we owe it to ourselves to find a better way.” added Beale.

Alderman Beale’s ordinance will authorize CDOT

to consult with agencies outside the state that have been approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) to help the department acquire alternative asphalt mixes that cost less and are of higher quality. The Alderman will also proposing that any alternative asphalt mix maximizes the use of post-consumer recyclable materials to ensure there is no negative impact on life cycle costs.

The ordinance is currently before the Committee on Transportation and the Public Way, which Alderman Beale chairs.

As advocates nationally look to reform the criminal justice system, Juliana Stratton, D-Chicago, recently passed legislation out of the House that would study Illinois law enforcement’s antiquated system of record keeping.

“Within the criminal justice system, there are so many moving parts, so it’s important to take a step back and take a snapshot of where we are right now,” Stratton said. “We need to look at the efficiency of our record system and as more local systems move towards electronic records to what extent is an over-reliance on paper slowing down the system as a whole?”

The Stratton-introduced House Bill 3879 calls for the state to identify the law enforcement agencies still operating on paper systems.

Even in 2017, many law enforcement agencies still have not moved to digital or electronic storage. The study would identify all law enforcement agencies who do not have electronic records to better allow policymakers to create a pathway for these counties to digitize their records in the future.

SSC Court Reporting Student Wins 1st Place in NCRA Contest

In honor of 2017 Court Reporting & Captioning Week, the National Court Reporting Association’s (NCRA) Student Committee challenged court reporting students to transcribe as many tests as possible during the week to qualify for a prize. First place was awarded to Angela Patla, a student at South Suburban College, Oak Forest, IL. Robyn Broyles a student at GateWay Community College, Phoenix, Ariz., earned second place, and Evie Morris, a student at the Court Reporting Institute of St. Louis, Mo., earned third place.

Under the contest’s rules, participants did not have to pass the tests, simply transcribe them. The first place winner Patla will be awarded a copy of NCRA’s RPR Study Guide, Broyles will have one leg of the RPR Skills Test covered, and Morris will receive a $25 Starbucks gift card.

Students who participated in the challenge were also required to submit a test verification form signed by both the student and a teacher.

“When I heard of the contest, I was debating on whether or not I should go for it. Winning the RPR Study Guide book was definitely something that pushed me in doing the contest,” said Patla, who won top honors by transcribing 31 tests during the competition.

May is Drowning Prevention Month in Illinois

Illinois DCFS recently released two audio and two video public service announcements (PSAs) aimed to educate the public about the importance of actively watching kids when they are in or near water to prevent accidental drowning deaths.

According to the CDC, drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury and death in the US, and is the second leading cause of injury death for children ages 1 to 14 years. More children between the ages of 1 and 4 die from drowning than any other cause of death except birth defects.

In 2016, 21 Illinois children under the age of 18 lost their lives due to accidental drowning: 13 in pools, three in bathtubs, two in lakes, two in rivers and one in a drainage ditch.

Loyola Performs 900th Lung Transplant “It’s Given Me a Whole New Life,” Patient Says MAYWOOD, IL – Loyola Medicine’s groundbreaking lung transplant program reached a new milestone when it recently performing its 900th transplant.

The patient is Chicago police officer Theresa BossFrench, 51, who received a double lung transplant performed by cardiothoracic surgeon Jeffrey Schwartz, MD. “It’s given me a whole new life,” she said. “Since my transplant, I have not coughed once or struggled to breathe.”

Ms. Boss-French has sarcoidosis, an inflammatory disease that mostly affects the lungs and lymph glands.

Symptoms include persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and chest pain. Sarcoidosis often occurs between the ages of 20 and 40. Women and African Americans are at higher risk for the disease.

Before her transplant, Ms. Boss-French had to use supplementary oxygen, and walking short distances left her gasping for breath. She coughed so much her husband could not sleep in the same room. She switched from being a patrol officer to less physically demanding duties at the security gate of a water filtration plant.

Ms. Boss-French was considered a high-risk patient for lung transplantation due to a complication of her disease called pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs). The hypertension increased the risk of bleeding during surgery. In preparation for surgery, Ms. Boss-French took a drug that controlled her hypertension for 15 months prior to the operation.

“Theresa is a very strong person who showed a lot of strength through every step of her disease,” said her pulmonologist, Sana Quddus, MD. “She is a pleasure to work with. Whatever we have asked her to do, she has done it. Better motivated lung transplant patients tend to do better, and Theresa is very motivated.”

Before her transplant, Ms. Boss-French worked up

to the day of her surgery. Now, she is looking forward to returning to work.

Ms. Boss-French thinks often of her donor and her donor’s family. “The day I received my transplant, one life was lost and one life was saved,” she said. “I am very, very grateful and humbled. They will be forever in my thoughts and prayers.”

Loyola is among the top lung transplant centers in the world and has performed three times as many lung transplants as all other centers in Illinois combined.

For 29 years, Loyola has operated the largest and most successful lung transplant program in Illinois. The multidisciplinary team regularly evaluates and successfully performs transplants in patients who have been turned down by other centers in Chicago and surrounding states. Despite taking on more challenging cases, Loyola consistently records outstanding outcomes.

Loyola performed the first single-lung transplant in Illinois in 1988 and the state’s first double-lung transplant in 1990. In 2007, Loyola performed the first simultaneous double-lung, kidney transplant in Illinois. In 2014, Loyola became the only center in Illinois to perform five successful lung transplants in just over 24 hours.

The lung transplant program is part of Loyola’s comprehensive advanced lung disease program, which offers second opinions and leading-edge clinical trials.

The advanced treatment can in some cases delay or even eliminate the need for a lung transplant.

The program is led by medical director Daniel Dilling, MD, and surgical director Jeffrey Schwartz, MD. Chicago, IL, - As the Illinois legislature grapples with a growing budget deficit, a new nationwide study of state business tax burden by Anderson Economic Group shows that Illinois’ business tax burden is in the middle of the pack nationally, but higher than those in neighboring states. The study found that 9.4 percent of Illinois business profits went toward state and local taxes in 2015 (the most recent year for which data are available), placing the state at 30th out of 51 states including the District of Columbia. Meanwhile, Indiana had the fifth lowest tax burden of any state, with 7.0 percent of business profits going toward taxes.

Ohio had the 9th lowest burden at 7.3 percent, and Wisconsin finished in 24th place at 8.7 percent.

Anderson Economic Group’s 2017 Business Tax Burden Rankings is the eighth edition of an annual comprehensive report on the business tax burdens of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The report shows Oklahoma, Oregon, and North Carolina leading the nation with the lowest business tax burdens, and Maine, Wyoming and North Dakota with the highest burdens.

The rport considers more than just corporate income taxes, addressing 11 different categories of taxes paid by business. Of these, property and sales taxes are the largest taxes borne by businesses.

“Some tax rankings order states based on the rate for a single tax or on a particular tax policy preference,” said Jason Horwitz, AEG director of economics and public policy. “We estimate the actual amount of tax revenue collected from businesses across all types of business taxes.”

The rankings are based on an objective measure of business tax burden that allow employers, policymakers, and investors to compare business tax burdens in different states using a published and consistent methodology, and fully disclosed data sources.

Survey reveals surprising fashion shopping habits among Generation Z vs. Millennial consumers SANTA MONICA, Calif-PRNewswire/ -- Dealspotr, a leading crowdsourcing platform for savings, recently conducted an online survey of shoppers to better understand their fashion shopping habits and preferences. The survey included 303 respondents across age groups, including Generation Z (20 and under), Millennial (21 to 35), Generation X (36 to 52), and Baby Boomers (53 and above).

Key survey findings Generation Z shoppers are the most likely to “webroom” or browse online then go in-store to buy apparel.

Fulfilling purchases on phones is still less popular than buying in-store or via computer or tablet.

Overall, Amazon is by a far the most popular way to buy fashion now.

Among Generation Z shoppers, H&M leads as the most popular retailer, with Forever 21 following close behind.

American Eagle and Urban Outfitters are disproportionately popular among Generation Z shoppers.

Department stores are unpopular among Generation Z and Millennial shoppers, with Target being the notable exception.

Luxury department stores overall performed very poorly, with Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s ranking near the bottom of shopper preferences. The exception was Nordstromwhich was popular among Generation X and Baby Boomer shoppers.

Former President Barack Obama returned to the University of Chicago to discuss a key priority for his time after the White House— helping to inspire and prepare the next generation of civic leaders.

On Monday, the former president gathered on stage at UChicago’s Reva and David Logan Center with students from around Chicago for his first public event since ending his second term in January. In a wide-ranging conversation, Obama talked about his own introduction to public service as a community organizer on Chicago’s South Side and asked students from schools including UChicago and Kenwood Academy about their own involvement in civic engagement and how to create new ways for their peers to participate.

Obama was introduced by UChicago secondyear student Richard Omoniyi-Shoyoola, and the student panel included UChicago third-year Max Freedman.

“I’m spending a lot of time thinking: What is the most important thing I can do for my next job?” Obama said. “And what I’m convinced of is that although there are all kinds of issues I care about and all kinds of issues I intend to work on, the single-most important thing I can do is to help, in any way I can, prepare the next generation of leadership to

take up the baton and take their own crack at changing the world.”

The event was a homecoming for Obama, who taught constitutional law, voting rights, and racism and the law at the University of Chicago Law School for more than a decade before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004.

He took the stage and asked the crowd of mostly local students: “So what’s been going on while I’ve been gone?”

But the nearly 90-minute discussion didn’t touch on current events. Instead, the former president spent most of the time asking questions of the young people, while talking about his own climb from community organizer to U.S. president. Obama also highlighted certain problems he sees such as the gerrymandering of Congressional districts and the influence of money in politics.

“I have been encouraged everywhere I go in the United States—but also everywhere around the world—to see how sharp and astute and tolerant and thoughtful and entrepreneurial our young people are,” Obama said. “So the question then becomes: What are the ways in which we can create pathways for them to take leadership, for them to get involved?”

At one point, the former president and Max Freedman, a third-year student at UChicago, explored how to get people of different views talking to each other rather than just talking

with those who have similar views. Freedman, a College Republican who worked in Iowa during last year’s caucuses, talked about an “empathy gap” that currently exists and the challenges that former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Indiana, faced for serving as a mentor to Obama.

“It’s not just that we’re reading different news, but we don’t talk to each other anymore,” Freedman said. “Civic engagement at some point will require a level of civility.”

At the end, the former president took questions from the young men and women gathered on stage, dispensing advice as they face their own challenges as they work to become involved in civic life.

Obama drew laughs as he advised one panel member to leave his clipboard at home when doing community surveys. Nothing causes people to run faster than when they see a clipboard, he joked.

The former president also reflected on his own political journey, something Obama said he is doing a lot of lately, as he writes a book on it. One insight is don’t do something just because it’s the next step. Obama said that approach was a major reason why he failed in his first run for Congress on Chicago’s South Side.

“Worry less about what you want to be, and worry more about what you want to do,” he said.

FORGIVENESS

A

n important discipline for each of us to practice is forgiveness.

Forgiveness is vital to our lives and our thinking in order to move forward in our purpose. Once when talking about forgiveness, Oprah Winfrey said, “Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different, it’s accepting the past for what it was, and using this moment and this time to help yourself move forward.” Inner peace can be reached only when we consistently practice forgiveness. Forgiveness helps us release the emotional ties that sometimes exist when we feel discouraged, heart-broken, disappointed, and hopeless.

The willingness to forgive is often rooted in our ability to work through the process. According to Jesus, the process of forgiveness requires that we do it repeatedly. This consistent process of repeating helps to shape the nature and tone of our thinking. Thoughts become things, and influences what enters our lives. Accordingly, thinking is the gateway to emotion and emotion is the gateway to action.

Other people or maybe even adverse circumstances may have been at the root of your pain, however, we are the ones who control whether we allow that pain to go on. Forgiveness of self and others is important because as long as we neglect to forgive we remain tied to that person and the pain the experience represents to us. When you forgive, you not only release the other person or condition, you also set yourself free from all of the agony and you give yourself permission to heal.

You can get beyond the pain if you decide to move on. You do not have to be held captive by what was done to you in the past and you do not have to feel compelled to punish them or get even in order to get better. A writer stated, “Forgiveness wipes the slate clean, so that other things can come in.”

As Americans all across the country join forces for National Volunteer Week, going on now through April 29, there are many opportunities right here in Chicago to support a cause, serve the community and make a difference.

One volunteer effort making an impact here in Chicago and around the world is Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse. The project collects shoeboxes—filled with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys—and delivers them to children in need around the world.

For many of these children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received. Each year, millions of children in need in more than 100 countries find hope in a simple shoebox gift, many of whom are affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine. In 2016, Operation Christmas Child volunteers made it possible for nearly 11.5 million children to receive a shoebox gift.
