Three Emerging Chicago Artists Win $15,000 in Services CHICAGO – Leading law firm for innovators, Creative Genius Law (CGL) selected three emerging Chicago artists as recipients for their inaugural We’ll Work for Art program. Limited to artists whose work focuses on a positive portrayal of underrepresented communities, have less than 10 years of experience in their prospective industry and are focused on a primary career as a visual artist, submissions opened at the end of June and closed mid August. Each selected artist will receive legal services up to $5,000 each including business entity formation and counsel, contract review, drafting or negotiation, trademark counsel and registrations, copyright counsel and registrations, and outside general counsel services in exchange for one piece of art.

This years’ selected artists are: VersAnnette Blackman-Bosia, Stephanie Graham and Colleen McCulla.

While President Barack Obama and Congresswoman Maxine Waters sent birthday greetings, Ambassador Andrew Young, Martin Luther King III and Dr. Martin L. King Jr’s sister, Dr. Christine King Farris were among celebrities and dignitaries on hand in Atlanta to acknowledge the 96th birthday of civil rights leader and former King confidant, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery.

The historical evening was made most memorable when OWN’s “Greenleaf” star and singer Keith David; Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” star and vocalist, Cassandra “Cassi” Davis; and gospel superstar, Yolanda Adams, mesmerized the audience with a stellar musical tribute that encapsulated the life of the well-loved nonagenarian. The Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute (Lowery Institute) hosted the gala which also featured Lowery Institute Change Agents packing the stage to honor the Dr. Lowery with raised fists and taking a knee.

Themed “Grounded in History: Soaring Towards The Future,” the Lowery Institute also awarded movie producer, Will Packer, attorney Angela Rye, and activist Rev. William Barber, for continuing the national dialogue in support of justice and human rights, and keeping the Lowery’s legacies alive as agents of change in their respective fields.

“The evening truly epitomized my dad’s life,” said Dr. Lowery’s daughter and president of the Lowery Institute, Cheryl Lowery. “People from all walks of life made it out to celebrate and producer, Kenneth Green, created an engaging musical experience, masterfully weaving elements of my mother and father’s work as agents of change juxtaposed with the Lowery Institute Change Agents who will continue to keep their legacy alive. He was able to tell their stories using all types of music from hip hop to the Morehouse College Glee Club.”

It was a full day conference that facilitated and promoted broader learning within the maternal and child health field while helping to achieve the organization’s goal to have national impact on the reduction of racial disparities in breastfeeding success for black families. BMBFA envisions positive cultural sentiments about breastfeeding, multi-generational breastfeeding support and encouragement within black families and neighborhoods. During an upcoming annual presentation of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Hyde Park School of Dance (HPSD) will display several genres of dance including ballet, modern and hip hop. The performance will feature more than 175 dancers—from seven-year-olds to grandparents—supported by more than 100 volunteers. Performances are December 8–10 at Mandel Hall on the University of Chicago campus, 1131 E. 57th Street, Chicago.

Staged by HPSD Founding Artistic Director August Tye, ballet mistress and choreographer at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the 90-minute narrated production follows Clara, Fritz and the mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer from the family holiday party and the midnight battle with the Mouse Queen

After last year’s enthusiastic response, HPSD again this year includes a hip hop dance battle to showcase the range of dance genres the school offers, as well as send a message of peace—instead of battling with swords, the mouse-soldiers use hip hop as their “weapons.”

Each year, HPSD casts one or more Chicago VIPs as the honorary Mother Ginger. Last year’s guest performers included Hyde Park Bank President Mike McGarry, Hyde Park Herald editor Daschell Phillips and Obama Foundation Vice President of Civic Engagement Michael Strautmanis. Past Mother Gingers have included 5th Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston, State Representative Kimberly DuBuclet, Ray Elementary School Principal Bernadette Butler and Court Theatre Artistic Director Charles Newell.

On Friday, December 8, HPSD performs an abridged

version for more than 800 school children, many seeing their first ballet. The performance is part of HPSD’s community engagement program, STEPS (Serve, Train, Educate, Promote, Succeed).

Prior to each performance, the Pre-Ballet Holiday Show showcases 70 of HPSD’s youngest ballet students in performance.

Adding a special element to the performance experience, the Hyde Park School of Dance Holiday Bazaar offers an opportunity to meet characters from The Nutcracker, finish holiday shopping from the wares of local vendors and indulge in a hot chocolate bar and other treats. The Holiday Bazaar takes place Saturday, December 9 from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday, December 10 from noon to 5 p.m. in the McCormick Tribune Lounge on the first floor of the Reynolds Club, the same building housing Mandel Hall.

Five Everyday Reasons You Need To Know Math (NAPSI)—Many people may shy away from the subject of math, but it is important to understand math as it plays an instrumental role in making good financial decisions. A new University of Phoenix® survey found that 28 percent of respondents reported they were not confident that their current math skills are strong enough to succeed in planning for retirement and 24 percent stated they are not confident in their skills to succeed in understanding tuition assistance and save or pay for college. Additionally, 35 percent are not confident that their math skills were solid enough to start a business.

Fake Insurance Tax Form Scam Aims at Stealing Data from Tax Pros, Clients WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service recently alerted tax professionals and their clients to a fake insurance tax form scam that is being used to access annuity and life insurance accounts.

Cybercriminals currently are combining several tactics to create a complex scheme through which both tax professionals and taxpayers have been victimized.

There may be variations but here’s how one scam works: The cybercriminal, impersonating a legitimate cloudbased storage provider, entices a tax professional with a phishing email.

The tax professional, thinking they are interacting with the legitimate cloudbased storage provider, provides their email credentials including username and password.

With access to the tax professional’s account, the cybercriminal steals client email addresses. The cybercriminal then impersonates the tax professional and sends emails to their clients, attaching a fake IRS insurance form and requesting that the form be completed and returned.

The cybercriminal receives replies by fax and/or by an email very similar to the tax professional’s email – using a different email service provider or a slight variation to the tax pro’s address.

The subject line varies but may be “urgent information” or a similar request.

The awkwardly worded text of the email states: Dear Life Insurance Policy Owner, Kindly fill the form attached for your Life insurance or Annuity contract details and fax back to us for processing in order to avoid multiple (sic) tax bill (sic).

The cybercriminal, using data from the completed form, impersonates the client and contacts the individual’s insurance company. The cybercriminal then attempts to obtain a loan or make a withdrawal from those accounts.

The IRS reminds tax professionals to be aware of phishing emails, free offers and other common tricks by scammers.

Those tax professionals who have data breaches should contact the IRS immediately through their Stakeholder Liaison. See Data Theft Information for Tax Professionals.

Individuals who receive the insurance tax form scam email should forward it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it.

Individuals who completed and returned the fake tax form should contact their insurance carrier for assistance.

Find out in Tellin’ Tales Theatre’s Halloween musical written and performed by middle school students and their adult mentors with and without disabilities. Jazz Institute of Chicago Initiates Search for New Executive Director (CHICAGO) - The Jazz Institute of Chicago (JIC) has launched a nationwide search for a successor to Lauren Deutsch, the organization’s Executive Director since 1996, as she assumes the new role of Director of Artistic Collaborations starting March 1, 2018. Ella Fitzgerald protégé Carmen Bradford joins Music Institute Artist-in-Residence Tammy McCann and other faculty from the Music Institute Jazz Studies program for a lineup of tunes from the Great American Songbook. Bradford sang with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1982 to 1990 and has performed around the world with Thad Jones, David Murray, and other jazz celebrities.
