Dolton Board Members Recognized

Two Dolton West Elementary District 148 School Board Members are receiving special recognition from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB).

Board Secretary Kim Adkins and Board Member Charles Lloyd will be among those honored at an IASB South Cook Division Dinner Meeting on Nov. 1 for having achieved Master Board Member, Level 1 status.

The IASB acknowledges board members for the time and effort they devote to leadership activities, service to the public education community and attendance at various functions.

Both Adkins and Lloyd are former District 148 Board Presidents. Adkins has served on the Board since April 2013. Lloyd previously served from 1998 until 2006. He was appointed to the Board in April 2016.

Adkins and Lloyd were re-elected to office in April 2017.

Pro-choice measure becomes law SPRINGFIELD – In response to Governor Bruce Rauner’s signature of a prochoice measure, Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) said the measure was a victory for pro-choice activists. “Governor Rauner kept his promise to protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions no matter what. When the governor threatened to change his position on this legislation, people across the state took action to remind him how important women’s reproductive rights are. Regardless of a woman’s income or any changes to federal law, every woman in Illinois should have the right to decide what is best for her health without government interference,” she said.

As Clark Atlanta University (CAU) President Ronald A. Johnson recently returned to Chicago for the 20th Annual Football Classic, Johnson spoke with the Citizen on the importance of students attending Historic Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

Johnson said he was very excited for CAU to be invited back to the annual Football Classic because the Classic represents one of the great, long traditions of HBCU’s.

Second to Atlanta, Chicago sends the largest pool of student applicants to CAU and this year’s Football Classic provided more than $1.7 million in scholarships.

“The Chicagoland is a major market for us in terms of student applicants and we enjoyed coming to Chicago because it’s a great city,” he said.

Johnson explained that HBCU’s were defined in the Higher Education Act of 1965 as institutions that provide higher education for Black people.

“HBCU’s were founded to be inclusive,” he said.

“They were not founded to be exclusively for Black people but inclusive for people who were excluded. The other major state institutions excluded Black people but Black folks didn’t exclude anyone.”

Johnson continued to say it’s important that HBCU’s continue to provide Black youth with opportunities that match their gifts and talents for today’s global world.

“We have to make sure our youth are given the opportunities to excel because if they don’t excel

then they’re going to just look back,” he said. “Then corporations will turn to China to get talent and if you’re not in the talent line, then you, your family and community will be ignored and become irrelevant to the future.”

Johnson explained that his parents weren’t able to complete high school but encouraged him to further his education and as a result, he obtained a PHD. Grammy-Award winning rapper, social activist and philanthropist, Chance the Rapper recently expressed his desire to attend Clark Atlanta University (CAU) on Twitter.

“I was [trying] to go to Clark ATL,” tweeted the 24-year-old rapper. “I’m still [trying] to go. Like not honorary, the full blown you dig. Can someone help me sign up?”

Chance, whose real name is Chancellor Bennett, was raised on the South Side of Chicago and recently contributed one million dollars to the Chicago Public School system.

During the Football Classic, Chance told CAU Officials that he wanted to apply his ‘creativity in a stimulating environment,’ according to a CAU press release.

Hyde Park Youth Symphony Announces Winner of T-Shirt Design Competition Chicago, Ill – The Hyde Park Youth Symphony recently announced the winner of its T-Shirt Design Competition which was held this past April. The T-Shirts, when produced later this year, will help to raise funds for Chicago’s only youth orchestra based on the South Side.

The winning design was submitted by Ms. Jessica Rose Lee, a student at Carroll University (Waukesha, WI) majoring in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Physical Therapy. While studying at Carroll University, Lee has continued with her interest in visual art first developed as a high school student. She came across the T-shirt design competition while researching art shows in which she thought she might be interested in participating. For winning this competition, Lee was awarded a pendant necklace donated by Chicago jewelry importer Diamonds of South Africa. She graduated from Barrington High School (Barrington, Ill.) in 2015 and is the daughter of Laurie Lee. Though her favorite medium to work in is acrylic on canvas and her favorite subjects are landscapes and cityscapes, she was intrigued with the challenge of working with silk screen on a project that would benefit a non-profit for children. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. announce the election of a new National President

The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Incorporated (NCBW), whose mission is to advocate on behalf of black women and girls to promote leadership development and gender equity in the areas of health, education, and economic empowerment, recently announced the election of Virginia W. Harris as its ninth (9) National President at the 18th Biennial Conference on September 23, 2017, in Baltimore, MD. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW) was launched on October 24, 1981, with representatives from 14 states and the District of Columbia, and selected Jewell Jackson McCabe as its first National President.

A twenty-six-year member of the Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter, President Harris has consistently demonstrated her leadership abilities through successfully serving at both the national and local chapter levels. The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) recently announced that both the City of Chicago and Chicago’s primary HIV advisory body, the Chicago Area HIV Integrated Services Council (CAHISC), have joined more than 390 organizations from 56 countries in supporting the U=U Campaign. The move is part of Chicago’s latest efforts to reach zero new HIV infections in the next decade. U=U, which stands for Undetectable = Untransmutable, raises awareness worldwide about the effectiveness of HIV treatment and to destigmatize the disease.

“HIV treatment works,” said Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Julie Morita. “We are proud to join U=U as we continue to fight to get to zero and ensure that every Chicagoan living with HIV receives the treatment they need to keep themselves and their partners healthy.”

U=U, a campaign created by Prevention Access, promotes scientific evidence that shows a person living with HIV who has had an undetectable viral load in their blood for at least 6 months cannot transmit the virus sexually to his/her partners. Previous language and studies suggested that there was small risk but the risk has been found to be negligible, or so statistically insignificant that it is not worth considering.

By joining the campaign, Chicago takes a vocal stand to embrace HIV treatment as an effective method for preventing new HIV infections.

This means that when a Chicago resident living with HIV is in treatment and reaches viral suppression, that individual is no longer at risk for transmitting the virus sexually to partners.

JB Pritzker Opens North Side Campaign Office

JB Pritzker recently opened a new JB for Governor campaign office on the North Side of Chicago. This is the seventh office opened across the state as the campaign continues to build a statewide, grassroots field operation.

While speaking at the opening, JB highlighted his priorities for investing in quality education, creating jobs, and expanding healthcare for Illinois families.

Javaka Steptoe Conducts Youth Workshop for Students

Author and illustrator Javaka Steptoe recently conducted an art workshop at the Harold Washington Library Center (HWLC). The event was hosted by the Chicago Public Library (CPL) and included 300 second and third grade students.

Steptoe is the 2017 recipient of the American Library Association’s Randolph Caldecott Medal and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award for his book Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist John Michel Basquiat, according to a CPL press release.

Elizabeth McChesney, director of children services and family engagement for the Chicago Public Library, explained that during the art workshop Steptoe discussed his new book Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist John Michel Basquiat.

“Radiant Child is about The Story of Young Artist John Michel Basquiat, which allows kids to find their own voice through recycled objects, construction paper and simple art materials,” she said.

“We love to do this event at the Chicago Public Library because it helps deepen kids’ creativity, their

connection to Steptoe’s book and [it] strengthens their literacy skills,” McChesney said. “It’s also empowering for kids to tell their own stories and that is a message of Steptoe’s work.”

Students also participated in a hands-on, introductory tour of the new STEAM-focused Thomas Hughes Children’s Library at HWLC, according to a CPL press release.

“Art is an important vehicle for self-expression during childhood and it’s also important in developing creativity, which is a critical 21st century learning skill,” McChesney said. “We have kids solving problems, collaborating and communicating together and hitting all of the important 21st century skills.”

McChesney said the children enjoyed seeing Steptoe in his true artistic form.

Steptoe’s debut work included, “In Daddy’s Arms I Am Tall: African Americans Celebrating Fathers, an anthology featuring poetry from notable poets, including Folami Abiade, Dinah Johnson and Carole Boston Weatherford, Angela Johnson and Sonia Sanchez, which earned him his first Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, in 1998.

In an accident with no more than two drivers, where neither is injured and the damage appears to be minimal, you can both agree to not call the insurance company. There are, however, several reasons to be cautious about doing that.

The first is that the other driver can at any time renege on the agreement to not involve the insurance companies. REV. DR. JEREMIAH A. WRIGHT, JR. HONORED CHICAGO, IL –McCormick Theological Seminary recently presented Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC), with its Legacy of Leadership award at a gala event held at the South Shore Cultural Center, Friday, October 13, 2017. The Legacy of Leadership Award celebrates transformational leaders whose ministry and voice have empowered and inspired communities of faith here, across the country, and around the world.

During Dr. Wright’s tenure as senior pastor at TUCC, and continuing under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III, TUCC has provided tuition reimbursement to dozens of members of their congregation who have matriculated

through McCormick. In September of 2016, McCormick and Dr. Wright partnered to launch a collaboratively designed doctor of ministry program known as the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. Scholars: African-Centered Religious Thought and Ministry, in which Dr. Wright is the featured scholar and mentor.

There are 22 students currently enrolled scheduled to complete their degrees in the spring of 2019. Rev. Dr. Stacey EdwardsDunn (D.Min.’11), who serves on the leadership team at TUCC, also serves at McCormick as the Director of the Center for African American Ministries and Black Church Studies and as adjunct faculty, since 2015. Rev. Dr. Edwards-Dunn also was a primary architect of the Dr. Wright Scholarsdegree program.

SPEAK LIFE When taking up the critical work involved in modifying the direction in which our lives may be going, one of the most fundamental things we can do is change the way we think about ourselves. Unfortunately, we sometimes overlook this simple, if not so easy step.

Whether we realize it or not, the way we think becomes the basis upon and from which we speak and act. Rare is the occasion when we outperform the things we declare about ourselves.

In order to speak life, we must think life. When we change the way we think, we immediately empower ourselves to change the way we speak.

Being responsible for the way we think, speak, and believe gives us the immediate ability to respond when life seems out-of-whack. There are more than enough challenges in the world already and sometimes life can be really difficult. Why add to the difficulties by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk. As it has been said, “Do not fill your boat with water. The storm will do that all on its own.”

Each of us needs a champion, a coach, and a cheerleader. Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader.

Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, do not tell yourself that you should have anyway; recognize how much you are helping yourself. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve, but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. Be patient with yourself.

You may not be a finished work just yet. Every constructive thing you can say to yourself will help. Speak life!

The Citizen Newspaper Group and the Illinois Press Association (IPA) recently honored the life and legacy of the Citizen’s late Publisherr William Garth at The DuSable Museum of African American History, located 740 E. 56th Place on Chicago’s Southside.

From 1980­2016, William Garth nur­ tured and loved The Citizen, making it the largest Black owned ABC audited newspaper in the Midwest. He once said, “I’ve been good to the Citizen, because the Citizen has been good to me.”

Darrell Garth, who is the son of the late William ”Bill” Garth and now Publisher of the Citizen. Darrell, thanked the IPA organization and the evening attendees for joining them in paying their respect to his late father.

(BPT) - Millions of Americans will soon select or switch their health benefits plan during open enrollment, so now is the time to prepare for that important decision that usually happens once a year.

More than 70 percent of Americans say they are prepared for open enrollment, yet most people struggle to understand basic health insurance terms, according to a recent UnitedHealthcare survey. Only 9 percent of survey respondents could successfully define all four basic health insurance concepts: plan premium, deductible, co-insurance and out-of-pocket maximum.

To help people make the most out of their health benefits, and better understand how to use their health care dollars, Rebecca Madsen, chief consumer officer of UnitedHealthcare, offers the following five tips.

Know your open enrollment dates Open enrollment isn’t the same or at the same time for everyone, so there are key dates to keep in mind depending on your situation: * For the more than 177 million Americans with employer-provided coverage, many companies set aside a two-week period between September and December when employees can select health benefits for the following year. * For the more than 59 million seniors and other people enrolled in Medicare, their Open Enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year. * Health insurance marketplace or individual state exchange open enrollment runs from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15.

For most people, changes made to coverage during open enrollment take effect Jan. 1, 2018.
