1 Backpacks donated to hurricane victims in Texas, Florida

SEATTLE -- This Giving Tuesday, Thirty-One Gifts and World Vision are partnering together to provide backpacks, drawstring bags, and clothing to thousands of children and families in the United States, Puerto Rico, and elsewhere who have been affected by disasters this year or may otherwise be in need of items like these. Many of the bags will be distributed to refugees and internally displaced families in conflict zones who need sturdy, lightweight bags to help them carry their belongings.

“In many ways, this has been an unprecedented year for natural disasters,” said Jennifer Hawley, Senior Director for Corporate Engagement at World Vision. “Through a generous partnership with Thirty-One Gifts, we will be able to bring emergency relief items to thousands of children and families in the United States and around the world who have lost nearly everything.”

Any donation to World Vision on Giving Tuesday will have twice the impact, thanks to the partnership with Thirty-One Gifts. For every donation to World Vision on that day, Thirty-One Gifts will provide up to $1 million in backpacks, apparel, and bags to help women and children in need here in the United States and around the world.

“We’re honored to be involved with World Vision for the fourth year in a row,” said Wendy Bradshaw, Executive Director of Community Affairs at Thirty-One Gifts. “We’ve been very pleased to see our products used to assist people in need during recent disasters,

and we’ve seen how World Vision is onsite immediately to help people when they need it the most. It’s our pleasure to help them further their impact and help more individuals and families in need everywhere through our donation match. We are hopeful many people will double their donation through this match on Giving Tuesday.”

This is the fourth year the two organizations have partnered together on Giving Tuesday to spread generosity during the holiday season. Since this partnership first formed in 2013, Thirty-One Gifts has donated more than $4.7 million to the humanitarian

organization.

Giving Tuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a day devoted to charitable giving, volunteering and advocacy, in response to the consumer focus of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The World Vision Gift Catalog gives donors over 100 ways to join the movement to end extreme poverty with life-saving gifts such as child sponsorship that make a tangible impact on families in need. University of Chicago Completes Mural in Woodlawn Continued from Page 1 By: Katherine Newman

The University of Chicago office of Civic Engagement along with the William Hill Center for the Arts and the South East Chicago Commission held a ceremony on Nov. 9 to dedicate a new mural located on the north and south walls of the 64th and Dorchester viaduct in Woodlawn.

The mural Seeds of Our Culture is a collaborative effort between the community, the artists and the organizations that commissioned the art work.

“The goal of this whole project was to be community oriented with community input,” said Nika Levant Associate Director of the Office of Civic Engagement at the University of Chicago.

Phase one of creating the mural began in January when a call to artists was released. The requirements to be considered were simple, the artists must be from the South Side or have their gallery on the South Side.

Over forty proposals were submitted.

“We gathered a pretty large advisory group to oversee the proposals and to go through a jury process and make a decision on which two artists would be selected to do the work,” said Lavant.

The group chose two artists, Arlene Turner-Crawford and Rahmaan “Statik” Barnes, to create the mural.

“I felt really fortunate to have been selected for this project,” Arlene Turner-Crawford said. “I’ve done other murals with community participation and I enjoy the opportunity to collaborate with both artists and residents.”

Phase two of the project was designing the mural with the community in mind.

“We went to a number of community meetings and forums so that our two artists could hear the climate and input from Woodlawn about what’s important to the neighborhood and what’s on peoples minds,” said Levant.

There was also a survey on the Woodlawn website regarding the mural to receive feedback from people who weren’t attending the meetings, according to Levant.

“There were some changes made to the original concept from a few of those conversations and forums for input,” said Levant “I love that my work and Statik and the community’s work created harmony on many levels,” said Turner-Crawford.

At the dedication ceremony attendees were given an infographic brochure that broke down the significance of every portrait and plant in the mural. They were also given a packet of Blue Iris seeds to take home and plant.

“We wanted folks to come away with something and then continue to plant the seeds in their own garden,” Levant said. “So really continue this dialogue about diversity and culture and how do you continue to engage folks around this mural past just walking or driving by it.”

The University of Chicago office of Civic Engagement has a history of supporting and showcasing public art on Chicago’s south side, specifically through murals. They have supported mural projects in the past and will continue to do so in the future.

Financial Literacy Program Free for Local Classrooms Local students are getting a free education in how to manage their money. NorthStar Credit Union is working with Banzai, a national award-winning financial literacy program, to make the curriculum available to 2 high schools in District 204 completely free.

“Banzai is a web-based financial literacy program. Kids have their own bank accounts, and they work through assignments that are based on real life,” Morgan Vandagriff, co-founder of Banzai, said. “But because NorthStar Credit Union is sponsoring it, local schools get it for free. More than ever, it’s important that kids develop sound financial skills to prepare them for the real world. NorthStar Credit Union realizes that, and they’re doing something about it.”

NorthStar Credit Union has offered time, money, industry experience, and a variety of credit union resources to help local schools teach personal finance in the classroom. Students using the program are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay bills and balance a budget – but it’s not always easy. Students must learn to manage unexpected expenses such as parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. The educational program also introduces students to auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs, savings and more.

Banzai is an interactive, online program supplemented by printed workbooks which aligns with state curriculum requirements for personal finance education.

Antibiotics – You Don’t Always Need Them

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently recognized U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week, November 13-19, 2017, to help decrease the misuse of antibiotics and protect people from the dangers of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Antibiotics do NOT cure viral infections such as colds, flu, most sore throats, most coughs and bronchitis, many sinus infections, and many ear infections.

According to the CDC, each year in the United States at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections.

IDNR Warns Landowners to Check the Value of Their Trees

Illinois forest landowners stand to be paid record-high prices for their mature forest trees and logs on farm and forest holdings, thanks to outstanding market prices for hardwood logs and lumber. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Forest Resources is urging forest landowners to consult with a professional forester before agreeing to sell.

“Many landowners don’t realize the full market value of their forest trees and because of it, they are often paid only 10 to 30 cents on the dollar.

Some of them are never paid at all,” said Paul Deizman, IDNR Forest Inventory, Utilization and Marketing manager. “Though most timber buyers, logging companies, and other forest operators doing business in Illinois are legitimate, some unscrupulous operators may try to take advantage of landowners, especially during times of high timber prices.

Bad deals are often initiated directly with unsuspecting landowners at their front door, by mail, or by attractive advertising.”

IDNR foresters want forest landowners to do some homework and exercise caution before agreeing to any timber offer. The IDNR maintains a “Call Before You Cut” toll-free hotline through which landowners can discuss timber and forest management with IDNR Division of Forest Resources personnel, who are available to offer the best advice on how to proceed when selling timber. The hotline number is 1-888-244-1706.

Lori E. Lightfoot Endorses Chris Kennedy and Ra Joy

Chris Kennedy received the endorsement recently of Lori E. Lightfoot, chair of the Police Accountability Task Force and leading advocate for police reform and accountability.

“Lori’s long been a champion of fairness and equality, and the city of Chicago is a better place because of her leadership. Lori fearlessly speaks truth to power and, with a government beholden to political insiders, her courage is critical to the future of Chicago,” Kennedy said. “We are so grateful for her endorsement of our grassroots campaign to bring fundamental change to Illinois.”

The campaign released a video endorsement from Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor and partner at a Chicago law firm, stating the following: “They’re two men of tremendous integrity. I think their track record; their experiences really show and demonstrate that. They recognize that our state is fundamentally going in the wrong direction. As a resident of Chicago, where we’ve seen our violence escalate to 1990 levels, Chris is the only candidate who is talking about violence, obviously has a personal history with it, and understands the devastating ripple effects that violence can have on individuals, families and communities.”

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is happy to announce their ranking of the Top 100 Best Cities to Raise Kids in the U.S. for 2017.

University of Chicago Host Speakers to Discuss Black Women and State Violence By: Katherine Newman

The University of Chicago hosted Andreia Beatriz dos Santos and Christen Anne Smith on Nov. 15 to speak on the topic of black women, state violence, and the transnational struggle for black lives. The discussion was mediated by PhD student Alyssa Mann Carey.

Andreia Beatriz dos Santos is a medical doctor at the Lemos Brito prison in Salvador, Brazil. She is the co-founder of the React or Die Campaign (Reaja ou Será morta), and a PhD candidate at the Federal University of Bahia where she studies the impact of the prison system on families and prisoners health.

Christen Anne Smith, Ph. D. is a black feminist anthropologist, social justice advocate, and Associate professor of Anthropology and African and African Diaspora Studies at The University of Texas at Austin.

She has worked with dos Santos and been a member of Reaja since 2005.

The two women traveled to The University of Chicago to challenge students to re-examine the way they understand anti-black violence.

“If you are African you are part of a collective.

You are part of a people. You are part of a group,” said dos Santos.

Today, in Brazil, black men are more often than not the target of unwarranted police violence, according to dos Santos. She described the police as being “the most important instrument that the state uses against black people.”

She also pointed to another issue, not only are black men being killed and sent to prison at an alarming rate, the impact that these events have on black women, who might be the mother, wife, or sister of these black men, is equally as devastating.

“We have the increase of black young men being killed, we have a big problem. We are not just talking about when this group is being killed we are talking about the impact of the death of black young,” said dos Santos At this point the discussion shifted over to the topic that Smith was there to speak on, the way we view anti-black police violence is gendered.

The way that data is analyzed is very linear and doesn’t represent the the dimensions of anti-black violence, according to Smith.

“We rely almost exclusively on counting the bodies, quite literally. We quantify black death and in that process of quantification we have a very narrow concept of time.”

We talk about te black men that are victims of anti-black policing, but never discuss the way that black women can be effected, according to Smith.

“The body count is always going to give us more black men but if we move away from body count and we think about the reverberating and lingering effects of black death,” Smith said. “I would argue the disproportionate targets of anti-black policing are actually black women.”

Both Smith and dos Santos believe if the state is responsible for killing a black man the state is also responsible for the effects that death has on that persons family and friends.

In conjunction with that thought, Smith concluded that anti-black violence is not nationally or culturally specific in the way that it is often talked about and by acknowledging this and breaking away from the numerical data that goes along with antiblack violence it is possible to make black women across the world visible in ways they have never been before.

Catalyst CEO Champions For Change Companies Outperform The S&P 500 In Advancing Women Into Leadership Catalyst, a global nonprofit that helps build workplaces that work for women, recently released data showing that as a group Catalyst CEO Champions For Change (Catalyst Champion) companies are outperforming their peers on advancing women into leadership. The report, Everyday Heroes: Catalyst CEO Champions For Change, reveals that in this collective of 50+ organizations that have taken the Catalyst pledge to accelerate change, women already hold more positions across the leadership pipeline.

Key findings: Catalyst Champion companies outperform the S&P 500 in advancing women into leadership: board seats (29.0% Catalyst Champion vs. 21.2% S&P 500), executive/senior-level positions (27.9% Catalyst Champion vs. 26.5% S&P 500) and first-/mid-level positions (38.4% Catalyst Champion vs.

36.9% S&P 500).

Nicki Minaj Stars In H&M’s Magical Holiday Film NEW YORK-- H&M has announced that the 2017 Holiday campaign film will star Nicki Minaj alongside Jesse Williams and John Turturro. Directed by Johan Renck, the film tells a story of a parallel fantasy world filled with memorable characters and a universal message of caring for one another.

A modern take on the classic fairytale, the film centres around a heroic little girl who tracks down the evil brother of Santa Claus in order to save the holiday season from his selfishness.

Have you ever been in the headspace where you thought to yourself, “Is this all that life has for me?” If you have or even if you are there right now, you may be ready to get more out of yourself than you ever thought possible? God has given you a gift and that gift is His greatness. However, in order to access it, we must think in alignment with Him and remember, “As we think in the heart, so are we” Proverbs 23:7. One of the ways we think in alignment is by refusing to justify or rationalize our poor decisions. Don’t make excuses make improvements. Change your mind and open up new possibilities to new experiences. Release the situations that no longer serve you, so that you can get into the situations that are meant to bless you. Paul wrote to the church in Rome, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.” The way we think becomes the process by which we handle ideas and create patterns in our life.

Your thoughts become words and your words become actions. Accordingly, if you want to change your actions, begin by changing the way you think and speak. These subtle habits form the foundation upon which you build the new you. Paul’s insights remind us that we must die daily. What old ways of thinking and being do you need to die to? What unproductive relationships is it time to change your thinking on so that you can be free to live more creatively? What old habits and behaviors have outlived their usefulness to you? What thoughts are you holding that are producing undesirable experiences in your life? What are you willing to release in order to live out of the gifts God has given you? Repetition is a convincing argument. Dying daily to the irrelevant and unproductive gives us license to live more fully into the new. New wine calls for new wine skins.

Christmas at the White House From sending formal cards to celebrating in Palm Springs to hanging Abraham Lincoln ornaments, America’s presidents have marked Christmas in ways that reflect their personalities.

Those celebrations are the focus of a new exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The special exhibit is free with regular admission to the Lincoln museum (212 N. 6th Street, Springfield).

The presidential library will once again offer families a chance to snap holiday photos complete with their gorgeous decorations.

From Nov. 22 through Dec. 31, people will be allowed into the museum after 4 p.m. at no charge to take a few quick photos in the main plaza.

And on the day after Thanksgiving, the presidential library presents “Fun, Frosty Friday,” a day of free games and children’s activities for anyone looking for an alternative to shopping madness.
