Some of the young ladies who come into the program start off with the desire of not wanting to code or believing that they can’t code. But with weeks of training, they ultimately leave the program with a strong passion to work in the field.

Brave Initiatives is an influential Chicagobased nonprofit organization that has offered free- computer coding camps to high school girls over the past two years. A program, founded by three women, was started out of their passion for computer science and technology. Emily Harburg, who is Brave Initiatives Director of Curriculum and Program Development, said although she and her co-founders feared studying computer science in their earlier years, they still wanted to create a program to encourage young ladies to learn and utilize the skill of computer science.

“Part of our goal is to create programs that allow girls to get the spirit and confidence in computer science,” Harburg said. “So, when they’re graduating high school, they are considering computer science programs and looking at colleges that may allow them to study computer science to help push them into this career.”

She said it’s been amazing to see the kinds of solutions that the young ladies, who didn’t even

have an interest in computer coding, come in and combat social issues within their respective communities, and ultimately realize how big their voice can be.

“It’s been really amazing to watch girls come in who didn’t think they could code or ones who had no desire to code and then see the incredible things they came up with,” Harburg said. “The girls are building websites to solve issues in their community. So, girls come in and are passionate about bullying or passionate about stereotypes or improving the educational system in schools and build websites that solve those problems.”

She said Brave Initiatives will have four camps during the summer of 2017, which will begin in mid-June and will end in August. Young women who are interested can apply online at https://www.braveinitiatives.com.

Harburg added, that there will also be a summer program in San Francisco, California and Jamaica because Brave Initiatives is trying to have the program not only in the U.S., but around the world.

“There has been a lot of research on diverse teens being better applicants,” she said. “So, Brave Initiatives is discussing to see how we can get companies to hire those types of women as well.”

Harburg said an estimate of 75 percent of jobs will be in computer science by the year 2030. So, she said Brave Initiatives is trying to help more women get inside a male-dominated field that currently only represents “25% of females in the workforce,” according to a Brave Initiatives press release.

She continued to explain that there are a lot of technology companies looking to hire women, but there aren’t too many women who are trained in the field and who have the skills to fill the roles. So, ultimately the tech roles are predominately filled by white men.

“We really feel that we need more women in these roles and we need to get them in this field,” Harburg said. “So, as these jobs come in and continue to increase, women will have the ability to be at the table and take those jobs.”

Collins urges governor to sign automatic voter registration into law SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Jacqueline Collins joined representatives of Common Cause Illinois and numerous other activists, advocates and fellow Springfield lawmakers at a press conference in Chicago on June 6, 2017, to commemorate the passage of automatic voter registration in Senate Bill 1933, which passed the General Assembly toward the end of the May legislative session.

Collins said the next step is encouraging people to vote.

“This is indicative of what we can accomplish when we work across the partisan divide,” said Collins, D-Chicago.

“I’ve been challenging potential voters to want to move beyond that apathy and the hopelessness, to understand that the vote is their voice, and voting does matter.”

Senate Bill 1933 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of the General Assembly. It awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

Illinois AFL-CIO Endorses JB Pritzker For Governor Chicago, IL — JB Pritzker was endorsed on June 6, 2017, by the Illinois AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 900,000 union members across the state. The endorsement gives “a powerful force behind his bid to challenge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018,” according to a JB Pritzker press release.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the unusually early move by the Illinois AFL-CIO, coming nine months before the March primary election, is a significant political boost for Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor who has vowed to self-fund his campaign and spend to elect Democratic House and Senate candidates. The union backing gives him much-needed boots on the ground.

From WLS-TV: University of Illinois Labor Professor Bob Bruno says a labor endorsement can also make a big difference in a close primary and general election race.

“Organized labor can build a coalition, it can aggregate votes and it can do education,” said Bruno.

Duckworth Speaks At Rally Against Cuts to Medicaid

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) joined Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Ron Wyden (DOR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) at a rally on June 6, 2017, with disability rights advocates against a $1.4 trillion in cuts to Medicaid which President Donald Trump has proposed in his healthcare repeal bill and budget blueprint. Senator Duckworth warned that the cuts would hurt students across the country who benefit from Medicaid-funded counselors and school nurses and jeopardize the healthcare coverage of both the millions of Veterans who rely on Medicaid and the two-thirds of nursing home residents whose bills are paid by Medicaid.

“This President’s proposed cuts to Medicaid would fall hardest on the people who need it most and that’s unacceptable,” Duckworth said. “It is not only a broken promise to our seniors and those with disabilities who depend on Medicaid to live with dignity and participate as equal members of our society, but also to our veterans, who deserve better than having their critical health coverage stripped away from them.”

Back 2 School Illinois Contest Launched

ACLU REPRESENTS MAN IN CASE WHERE POLICE OBTAINED MONTHS’ WORTH OF CELL PHONE LOCATION INFORMATION WITHOUT A WARRANT

CHICAGO - Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), a Chicago-based nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low-income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom, recently announced the launch of this year’s “Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School” contest.

Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies, including their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year.

Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated.

The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th.

(Washington, DC) - The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (NCBCP) Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR), in collaboration with the AARP, recently announced the launch of its HealthCARE is a HumanRight #NotAPrivilege Campaign (BWR HealthCARE Campaign). The campaign is a call to action that is focused on protecting Medicare, Medicaid and quality affordable health care for seniors, children, young adults and the poor; and protecting Social Security for seniors, dependents and the disabled.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a landmark case on whether the government needs a warrant to access a person’s cell phone location history. The American Civil Liberties Union is co-counsel in the case, Carpenter v. United States. In 2011, without getting a probable cause warrant, the government obtained from cell service companies months’ worth of phone location records for suspects in a robbery investigation in Detroit.

For one suspect, Timothy Carpenter, the records covered 127 days and revealed 12,898 separate points of location data.

After Carpenter was convicted at trial, based in part on the cell phone location evidence, he appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 2–1 that no warrant is required under the Fourth Amendment.

Team Selected to Develop Michael Reese Site in Bronzeville Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently announced selection of a master development team to lead the revitalization of the Michael Reese site in Bronzeville. The team is led

by Farpoint Development, Draper & Kramer, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, McLaurin Development Partners, and Bronzeville Community Development Partnership, among others. The consultant architect for the team is Skidmore Owings & Merrill. The 10-year project is expected to create up to approximately 36,000 temporary and permanent jobs.

“After sitting vacant for nearly a decade, today we are taking a major step towards the transformation and revitalization of the Michael Reese site,” Mayor Emanuel said. “Over the next 10 years this team will work with the community and the City to deliver a once-in-a-lifetime redevelopment that will generate economic opportunities and growth in Bronzeville and in neighborhoods throughout the city of Chicago.”

The initial phase may include a logistics center to accommodate McCormick Place truck traffic on multiple levels, potentially with new associated event, exhibit and/ or meeting space. Planned later phases include more than 5 million square feet of technology-oriented commercial spaces, retail uses, homes and a hotel, depending on market demand.

“The team’s substantial development and design experience will ensure each development phase will maximize its benefits to the community and entire city, which is reflected in the long-term goal to assimilate the site with the lakefront, adjacent residential properties, and McCormick Place,” said David L. Reifman, commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development. “I look forward to moving forward with the process that will

determine the scope and impact of this historic project.”

The overall project scope will be subject to a formal redevelopment agreement that will be finalized through a community-based process that will be subject to approval by the City Council and Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) Board.

The proposal estimates that, at full build-out, the project will generate more than 24,000 permanent jobs and more than 12,000 construction jobs. Over 20 years, the project is projected to generate more than $520 million in property taxes and $164 million in sales taxes.

The Michael Reese Site is the former location of the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center at 2960 S. Ellis Ave. The hospital complex closed in 2008 and the City acquired the property in 2009.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) issued for the 49acre site last fall sought mixed-use development proposals that add mixed-use vibrancy to Chicago’s south lakefront communities. In cooperation with the MPEA), the RFP included MPEA’s 28-acre Marshalling Yards Site to the east.

The selected bid includes an initial proposal of $144.45 million in compensation for the Reese site and the marshalling yards. The proposed payment terms will be considered and finalized as part of the formal redevelopment agreement, which will be subject to City Council and MPEA Board approval.

The proposal also includes plans for a new park and Metra train station at 31st Street; new pedestrian connections to the lakefront; and a rebuilt Cottage Grove Avenue.

Previous projects completed by members of the winning bidding team include 1K Fulton, Pullman Park, Chinatown Library, Motor Row Plaza and Kennedy King College.

Organizations Awarded $1 Million in Grants to Support Chicago Entrepreneurs Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago (“WBC”) recently announced the grantees of the Blackstone Inclusive Entrepreneurship Challenge (“Blackstone Challenge”). For the first year of the Blackstone Challenge, eight organizations were awarded grants totaling $1 million to connect diverse Chicago entrepreneurs, particularly people of color, immigrants, women and veterans, with resources to help scale and grow their businesses. These grants are part of a $3 million commitment made in January 2017.

“By investing in organizations that support diverse entrepreneurs we create economic opportunities that reach all parts of Chicago,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are incredibly grateful that Chicago was chosen as the pilot city for the Blackstone Challenge program, and look forward to seeing it generate jobs and growth as we build on its success.”

Nearly 50 organizations submitted proposals, of which the top eight were selected to receive grants. Starting next month, the grantees will focus on deploying strategies to recruit, engage and support diverse entrepreneurs throughout the Chicagoland area. At the end of the first year, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago will announce the process to distribute an additional $2 million in grant funding.

“We look forward to seeing what our eight awardees will accomplish in the coming year,” Jon Gray, Global Head of Real Estate at Blackstone said. “We believe it’s critical that any entrepreneur – regardless of where they live – has access to the resources they need to scale and grow their businesses. Our hope is that this program will serve as a model for other communities across the country to support a diverse group of entrepreneurs.”

Through this initiative, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation, in partnership with ChicagoNEXT of World Business Chicago, continues its mission of investing in entrepreneurship to support new ventures and job creation.

“Chicago’s greatest strength is our diversity, so we need to be

targeted and intentional about supporting entrepreneurs from marginalized communities,” Jimmy Odom, Director of Inclusive Entrepreneurship for ChicagoNEXT said. “This Blackstone Challenge cohort will work together to make sure a diverse representation of entrepreneurs get the resources they need.”

The Blackstone Challenge will be the initial focus of the ChicagoNEXT Inclusive Entrepreneurship Leadership Council, whose thirteen members, composed of civic and business leaders, were announced last month. The council will offer strategic direction for the program, mentor and advise the grantees, and use their convening power to support regional program events.

“The selected organizations have proposed a wide range of strategies to support inclusive entrepreneurship,” Amy Stursberg, Executive Director of the Blackstone Charitable Foundation said. “The Foundation is proud to serve as a catalytic funder to support these exceptional organizations as they test and scale their programs, and contribute to Chicago’s thriving entrepreneurship landscape.”

The following organizations were selected because they offered new, innovative projects to expand their work driving inclusive entrepreneurship: Bethel New Life, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bethel New Life, an organization focused on bringing individuals and families out of poverty, to launch a Business and Technology Program featuring a training course, workshop series and an expanded tech lab, in Chicago’s West Side.

BLUE1647, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow BLUE1647, an entrepreneurship and technology center, to double BLUEINCUBATE, an accelerator offering shared workspace and membership to start-ups, tech-enabled businesses and individuals, allowing these entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, integrate technology into their strategy, and network with stakeholders and investors.

Bunker Labs, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bunker Labs, an organization that helps military veterans launch

and grow businesses through educational programs and networking, to create Guided Virtual Cohorts, a remote, high touch version of the successful Bunker in a Box platform, and the CEOcircle Program, a program which provides additional resources to later stage founders.

1871, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support 1871, a hub for digital startup entrepreneurship in Chicago, to create the 1871 Community Curriculum Project that will digitalize content from its workshops and events to make it accessible to a wider audience of entrepreneurs.

Future Founders, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support Future Founders, an organization focused on inspiring the next generation of young entrepreneurs, in the creation of Future Founders Chicago Cohort, a program that fosters the development of millennial businesses from communities of color, women, veterans and immigrants with 1-on-1 biweekly mentoring, monthly cohort workshops, and an intensive two-day summit. i.c.stars, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow i.c.stars, an organization that provides technology-based training for low-income adults, to expand Enterprise Next, a three month lean startup training and incubation program, and to add a pitch night and Idea Hacks.

UI Labs, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support UI Labs, an innovation accelerator that brings together partners from “university + industry,” to create the City Digital: Inclusive Entrepreneurship for Collaborative Innovation, a partnership between City Digital and Colony 5 to help community based startups tackle complex urban challenges and explore ideas on smart city developments through entrepreneurship.

Women’s Business Development Center, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow the Women’s Business Development Center, which aims to strengthen women’s entrepreneurship and impact on the economy, to expand ScaleUp, a program which provides entrepreneurial education, one -on-one support and mentoring, to two new neighborhoods including West Rogers Park and South Chicago.

UNCF SALUTES CHICAGO FOOTBALL CLASSIC CO-FOUNDERS CHICAGO – The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) will salute the co-founders of the Chicago Football Classic – Larry Huggins and brothers Timothy J. Rand and Everett Rand – at the 2017 UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala – Chicago. The event will be held Saturday, June 17, at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker Drive.

“The Chicago Football Classic is an institution in our community and, now, in its 20th year, we want to celebrate the co-founders, each of whom is accomplished in his own right, as our “A Mind Is…” Gala Community Award honorees,” said Lisa Rollins, UNCF regional director, Workplace Initiatives.

Larry Huggins is president and CEO of Riteway-Huggins Construction Services. Timothy J. Rand is president and CEO of MAC One, a restaurant group. Everett Rand is owner of Midway Wholesalers, a liquor distributor.

Together, they founded the weekend slate of cultural, educational and sporting activities that has become known as the Chicago Football Classic, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The mission of the Classic event is to inspire African Americans to consider academic and cultural opportunities offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The weekend includes scholarship opportunities, a college fair and empowerment summit in addition to the head-to-head competition between two HBCU football teams and the everpopular Battle of the Bands.

Each year the UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala brings together corporate, civic, nonprofit and community leaders and influencers to raise funds for deserving disadvantaged students to attend college.

The program includes recognition of extraordinary individuals and organizations that support the work of UNCF. This year, Commonwealth Edison will receive the Corporate Award.

Shayne Evans, founding managing partner, The Academy Group, and D’Rita Robinson, civic leader and entrepreneur, also will receive honors.

Award-winning sculptor, painter, and multi-media artist Debra Hand will create the honorees’ awards.

Internationally-renowned drummer, percussionist, singer, songwriter, author, humanitarian and actress Sheila E will provide the evening’s entertainment.

A Mississippi domestic named Ablene Cooper sued Kathryn Stockett for appropriating her life story in The Help. Writer Patrick White claimed a hip hop mogul plagiarized his work in Jay Z’s book, Decoded. Literary artists from Helen Keller to Harper Lee have sued or been sued for copyright infringement, plagiarism, defamation and a host of other legal issues.

What constitutes plagiarism? Can a “homemade copyright” protect your intellectual property? Is the disclaimer “names have been changed to protect the innocent” adequate defense in a defamation case? FLOW Writers (For Love of Writing) and Lawyers for the Creative Arts (LCA) address these issues and more in “Writers, Know Your Legal Rights!

Ms. Walker plans LCA’s educational programming and lectures widely on copyright law, including rights acquisition and transfer and overall best practices to manage copyright interests in creative works. Prior to practicing law, Marci worked in independent film and media, providing production management, clearance, set photography and ghost writing services. She is a closet write who wrote her first manuscript at age 12 and published at age 14.

• Jason Koransky’s practice focuses on trademark, copyright, advertising, data privacy, and Internet law. His experience ranges from litigating in federal court and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, to trademark clearance, prosecuting domestic and foreign trademark applications, and drafting and negotiating license agreements. Before transitioning into a career as an attorney, Jason worked as a journalist in the Chicago area for more than a decade.
