ayor Rahm Emanuel and Alderman Pat Dowell (3rd) recently announced the innovative Third Ward Parade of Homes initiative, which will convert vacant land in Bronzeville to market rate single-family homes.

Utilizing vacant, City-owned lots, local developers will build up to 42 houses on the 3900 to 4500 blocks of South Prairie, Calumet and Indiana avenues within the Grand Boulevard community.

“The Parade of Homes will foster new residential development that, in turn, will support commercial development that’s occurring throughout Bronzeville,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are using an all-of-theabove approach to economic development in every part of Chicago.

This initiative doubles down on the progress we have seen throughout Bronzeville – from the Arts and Recreation Center at Ellis Park to the new Mariano’s on King Drive to the state-of-the-art pedestrian bridge at 35th street.”

“Ten years ago, I brought together a coalition of community leaders and AfricanAmerican businesses and after a thoughtful, creative and realistic process we developed the Third Ward Parade of Homes,” Ald. Dowell said. “Today’s announcement is the result of long hours of planning and relentless dedication to strengthening our neighborhoods. According to Chicago Refuse Fascism Initiator, Tedd Sirota, Donald Trump’s presidency will be run by a fascist dictatorship.

"What we’re saying is that there are many definitions of fascism, and if you look it up, you will see that Donald Trump fits these character traits. The most dangerous thing about it is this ‘marriage of convenience’ that Trump has put together between his unbridled capitalism and the Christian fascism of Mike Pence.

He has whipped up the most racist statements in society and unleashed them on Black people, Muslims, the press and now he is attacking the arts on Twitter. The signs are clear. The evidence is clear,” Sirota said.

Recently, a press release stated that Co-Initiator Carl Dix and several protestors disrupted Senator Session’s confirmation hearing and were removed in handcuffs.

The press release stated that Dix was dragged out of the hearing saying, “We refuse to accept a fascist America.

We must be in the streets starting January 14th to stop the Trump-Pence fascist regime from coming to power.”

Sirota stated that people from all sectors of society should be concerned about the threat of an incoming

fascist government. He said, “We all should show concern because what we face right now is fear.

You might fear of being deported, or if you are a Black and walk down the street with a hoodie on, you might fear of being shot in the back while walking down the street by the police. There are so many different communities that are under threat.”

Sirota, who is a jazz and reggae musician stated that several celebrities are involved in the Refuse Fascist movement including Laila Hathaway, Rosie O’Donnell, Alice Walker, Rapper, Chuck D, Comedian Margaret Cho, Debra Messing, among others.

THIRD WARD PARADE OF HOMES PLAN MOVING FORWARD IN BRONZEVILLE Continued from page 1

Under the plan, participating developers R&D Builders, Greenline Parade of Homes, JJ Group Realty, Wade Enterprises & Associates, and Click Development will each build a model home at 4510, 4514, 4516, 4524, and 4546 S. Prairie Ave., respectively. The homes will have three to five bedrooms, modern amenities, and be priced from approximately $440,000 to $589,000. The developers were selected by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development following a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process in late 2016.

The City-owned lots for the model homes will be provided to the developers for $1 each. Upon the homes’ completion and sales, additional lots would be sold to the developers for half of their current appraised values. Typically sized at about 3,250 square feet, the properties were acquired by the City through a variety of tax sales and sheriff ’s deeds.

In the last year, 31 construction permits were issued for new single family housing in the Grand Boulevard community. Over the last 20 years, DPD has provided funding to create more Mayor Emanuel and Ald. Dowell recently cut the

ribbon on the new Mariano’s grocery store in Bronzeville. The new store adds fresh, healthy food options and creates 400 jobs, including approximately 100 jobs that are held by Chicago Housing Authority residents.

Located at 3859 South Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, the new store covers more than 74,000 square feet and brings renewed life to a key intersection that has been vacant for several years. It also features products from approximately 50 local suppliers.

In addition to the recently-completed bridge at 35th street, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) has four other South Lake Shore Drive bridge projects on the way, including a new pedestrian bridge at 41st Street expected to start construction next spring. A third pedestrian bridge will replace the existing non-ADA compliant pedestrian bridge at 43rd Street. The Department is also finalizing designs for the replacement of two vehicular bridges over the railroad tracks at 31st Street and 39th Street.

The proposed land sales were proposed to the Community Development Commission on Tuesday, Jan. 10. City Council approval is also required.

Briefly Senate passes lead testing bill for water at schools SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois senate passed legislation recently meant to address the issue of lead contamination in drinking water and other water supplies. The legislation, SB 550, would require schools built before the year 2000 with students fifth grade and below and licensed day cares to test drinking water and water used for cooking.

State Senator Donne Trotter (D-Chicago) was one of the bill’s chief co-sponsors in the Senate.

“If we don’t address this issue in schools now, we are going to continue to see huge disparities in education,” said Trotter. “Older schools in heavy low-income and minority areas are much more likely to be effected, leading to developmental delays, learning disabilities and many other significant health problems. That is why lead testing is so important.”

The legislation now goes to the governor’s desk.

Letters to the editor The Department of Agriculture claims the cost of raising a child from birth through age 17 is $233,610, or almost $14,000 annually. As the father of seven children, let me say that this is nonsense.

Moreover, the Department of Agriculture fails to identify the multiple BENEFITS of raising children, such as the physical, spiritual, intellectual and emotional advantages. These benefits are not just unquantifiable, but inestimable. The value of raising, nurturing and training children far surpass the outlandish financial estimates of Washington D.C. bureaucrats.

With this seemingly exaggerated cost estimate, how do we expect to encourage married couples to return to the healthy birth rate of more than 2.1 in the United States? We’re shortsighted if we fail to see that the current U.S. trend is unsustainable and portends economic trouble, including lower living standards for most citizens.

We simply have to look at Japan, Greece or Italy for a lesson in the detriment of low birth rates.

Federal officials are simply out-oftouch with Middle America. Most of us don’t spend hundreds of dollars on a hammer and we spend far less than they estimate to raise a child each year.

The government can learn something from working families.

Illinois Residents Make Pledge to Go Sugarless on Wednesdays Campaign serves as an initiative to promote healthier lifestyles Chicago, IL — The American Heart Association, Senator Mattie Hunter from Illinois’ third district, and other Illinois legislators are spearheading an initiative to implement Sugarless Wednesday across the state – a campaign to develop healthier communities by changing the overall lifestyle of residents with one small change. The program takes place every Wednesday, now through March 29 in 2017.

“African-American and Hispanic communities throughout the state of Illinois are suffering from tremendous health disparities due to the high intake of sugar in their diets,” said Hunter. “If we can implement a campaign to encourage everyone to adopt a healthier lifestyle, even if it’s just for one day a week, the results will lead to an astounding increase in good health for our residents.”

Senator Hunter is introducing a resolution declaring every Wednesday in February 2017 as Sugarless Wednesday in Illinois.

Those who participate will sign pledge cards stating, “I pledge to do my best to go sugarless.” However, sugarless does not mean sugar-free. Instead, it means no sugary drinks such as soda and artificial fruit juice and reducing the consumption of sugary desserts and snacks.

Noting that one 20 oz. soda contains more sugar than six glazed

doughnuts, 18 cookies or two bags of chocolate candy, the American Heart Association is mobilizing communities across the state of Illinois to make incremental changes that lead to significant influence in their overall health.

Sugarless Sunday was the kickoff, and on December 18 more than 100 churches across the state of Illinois mobilized their congregation to make the pledge to go sugarless for one day. On this day, church communities raised awareness of the harmful effects of added sugar in their diets. The churches that participated represented more than 100,000 congregants across the state of Illinois with more than 60,000 members in the Chicagoland area, 20,000 in Rockford and more than 15,000 in East St. Louis.

"Sugarless Sunday and Sugarless Wednesday serve as a major step in the right direction,” said Bishop Larry D. Trotter of Sweet Holy Spirit Church in Chicago. “This program is amazing and is well needed. Having suffered from heart problems, cancer, and ten surgeries, I understand the importance of good exercise and a healthy diet. I will do what it takes to help my community to do the same.”

“I’m so committed to this initiative that I’m challenging all churches and organizations across the state to see who can bring

in the most pledges and participation,” said Pastor Charles Jenkins of Fellowship Baptist Church of Chicago. “I’m really pushing my congregation to make sure that Fellowship comes in at number one.”

“I’m very excited and ready to galvanize our parishioners to get on board,” said Pastor Paris Johnson of Northend Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis. “Sugarless Wednesdays is a great avenue to educate our congregation on the risks associated with a diet heavy in sugar, and we are on board regardless if it’s getting our members to sign pledge cards or making sure we provide healthy food at our church gatherings,” he continued. “As churches, we need to do more than offer religion, but make sure that our communities have healthy bodies because that ties into having a healthy spirit."

Faith-based communities will continue to serve as the foundation for the movement, but community organizations, fraternities, sororities and health-based groups across the state are also involved.

Honor Dr. King’s Legacy by Continuing the Voting Rights Fight We are facing a critical time for voting rights in our country. On Monday, I spoke to the Southland Ministerial Health Network at their Martin Luther King Day Spirit of Excellence Awards about the need to continue the fight for voting rights as the best way to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

Not that long ago in this country, African Americans who tried to register to vote and those who would help them register, were locked out of clerks’ offices, or worse, intimidated, beaten, even killed— so that they wouldn’t exercise their right to vote. The 1965 Voting Rights Act helped end that violent voter suppression.

As we honor the legacy of Dr. King and those who fought for the Voting Rights Act by registering to vote and going to the polls, we must confront the ugly truth that across the country, voting rights are being threatened again.

In 2013 the Supreme Court severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, giving many states wide latitude to restrict access to the

polls, which they are doing with enthusiasm.

We have yet to see what further damage the Supreme Court will do under the next administration.

Despite the current attacks on voting rights, in Illinois we have has improved access and ease in voting. Our successes would not have been possible without the help of engaged and involved citizens, civic groups and legislators. Eleven years ago I introduced Early Voting to Illinois, and each election cycle we see significant increases in Cook County residents voting early. We have also implemented online voter registration, same-day voter registration and expanded our election judge program to include high school students.

This year, we reached a record 3 million registered voters in Cook County. We have worked diligently to ensure the lists are cleaner and more accurate.

But there is still work to do, here and nationally.

Here in Illinois, we must pass Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). AVR will save us money be streamlining the process of cleaning the voting rolls and thereby ensuring we have the cleanest rolls possible.

Government agencies should harness technology to share information so that voting rolls are accurate and citizens don’t need to unnecessarily engage with multiple bureaucracies.

A functional democracy requires voting so the wishes of the electorate are supposed to guide our public policy. When democracy is weakened, it leads to what we see today: public policy that is simply not what people want. Voters do not want continuing inequality or justice that is determined based on your skin color or your wealth.

Dr. King understood this. He understood the relationship between racism, economic inequality and the right to vote. Today our challenge is galvanizing our energy to continue the fight he gave his life for.

Local Theater Group Presents Beauty and the Beast

The Children’s Theatre Company of Hyde Park College is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with a presentation of Beauty and the Beast.

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Children’s Theatre Company of Hyde Park College is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with Michele L. Vacca’s enchanting and warmly amusing dramatization of the beloved tale Beauty and the Beast.

Performances will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 11:00am and 2:00pm.

Florabunda, the Enchantress (Sandy Wagner of Lansing), begins the play by gathering a troupe of players about her, and assigning them roles. Belinda, the heroine (Catherine Hundt of Thornton), is a young woman of strong opinions, education and talent.

Belinda’s father Henry Beaumont (Pat Nevins of Homewood), is the prosperous merchant.

In an effort to gain money for festivals and a new swimming pond, arrogant Prince Philip (Rykeil Knights of Riverdale) seizes all of Beaumonts’ property and they are forced to declare bankruptcy. To teach him a lesson, Florabunda works her magic and turns Philip into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return.

One day, Henry mistakenly wanders into the garden of the legendary Beast (Eric Atkinson of Chicago). The angry Beast reluctantly promises to spare Henry’s life, but only if Belinda agrees to live in his castle. Despite Henry’s objections, Belinda insists upon doing as the Beast requests.

With the help of his servants (Juniper DeYoung of Thornton, Angela Martin of Midlothian and Heather Young of Chicago), Belinda begins to draw the coldhearted Beast out of his isolation.

Gradually, they become friends

and inseparable companions.

Lansing resident Ellie Shunko is the director and producer. “We created the Children’s Theatre Company in 1986 to fill a need for affordable, live theatre for young audiences,” she said. “We perform for local grammar school and child care groups during school hours and for the general public on weekends. Our school performances are completely sold out.” Even after thirty years, Shunko has no plans of slowing down. “We are providing a valuable service for our community here at SSC,” she says. “And I still love watching the kids watch the shows.”

Adding their talents to the production lighting are designer Jon Jenkins from Chicago, costume designer Joanna Tassin from Park Forest, set designer Dean Scalzitti from Chicago and choreographer Lynzi Scholz from South Chicago Heights. June Wagner, from Lansing, is the stage manager.

Hyde Park College is located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294 and is also accessible by PACE. Free, ample, well-lit parking is available.

January is Radon Action Month Governor Bruce Rauner has proclaimed January ‘Radon Action Month’ in Illinois to encourage residents to test their homes for radon, a radioactive gas that is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. To kick off the month, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and the American Lung Association in Illinois (ALAIL) recently announced a statewide initiative to help Illinois school districts screen school buildings for radon.

It’s estimated more than 1,100 people in Illinois develop radon-related lung cancer each year, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognizes radon as the leading cause of home-related deaths in the U.S. As part of the school initiative, districts throughout Illinois can receive radon detection equipment, assistance with developing a radon testing plan and guidance on radon detector placement within school buildings. To participate in the program, designated school district employees must complete an online training course on procedures for performing screening measurements in their district school buildings.

Rex, King of Carnival Issues Official 2017 Invitation to Mardi Gras New Orleans’ Carnival, also known as the ‘Mardi Gras season’ in New Orleans, begins each year on ‘Twelfth Night’ (January 6) and concludes Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras Day on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. To announce the season, Rex, King of Carnival issues a proclamation to the world.

“The Rex 2017 Royal Proclamation continues a carnival tradition more than a century old,” said Mark Romig, President and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, NOTMC. “The proclamation signals that it is time to make plans to travel to New Orleans’ most famous celebration, yet another demonstration of how unique New Orleans is to the world.”

INTERFAITH LEADERS MEET TO DISCUSS PRESIDENT OBAMA’S LEGACY WASHINGTON, DC –President Barack Obama’s Legacy was the subject of a four-hour featured event at The National Press Club recently.

Interfaith religious leaders from across the country gathered in Washington to attend the event and to discuss the historic achievements of the first-black U.S. President. The event, which was sponsored by Sims Media Group, was held held in the National Press Club’s Holeman Lounge at 529 14th Street NW, 13th floor, where the club’s first black president, Jeff Ballou, and the club’s outgoing president, Thomas Burr, welcomed guests.

Twelve prominent leaders selected from the 84 who contributed to the book, Mr. President, which Reverend

Darryl D. Sims and Barbara WilliamsSkinner compiled on the Obama years, were invited to participate. One of the goals of the event was to offer a lively mix of ideas from different faiths on what needs to be done to preserve Obama’s legacy.

“There is no doubt that becoming the first black President of the United States of America is Barack Obama’s greatest legacy,” The Reverend Sims said during an interview. “His remarkable success in office has delivered a significant blow to white supremacists, committed to racial division.”

Sims believes that for America to be a united country, it needs to grapple with the race issue and find ways to

Mark Farina Releases 'Casey & the Flying Fortress'

New book tells story of young man from Chicago who became B­17 bomber Co­pilot during World War II

BROOKFIELD, Ill. ­ Mark Farina's F a t h e r ­ i n ­ L a w, Casey Paulinski was a Bomber Pilot during World War II. The many questions his sur­ viving family mem­ bers had about his father­in­law's involvement in the war prompted Farina in research­ ing that topic which led to his writing of the book titled "Casey & the Flying Fortress" (published by AuthorHouse).

This book tells the story of a young man from Chicago who became a co­pilot of a bomber in Europe during World War II­from training, to the assembly of his B­17 crew, the men's struggles after becoming prisoners of war and the discovery some 60 years later of details his surviving family and fellow crew mem­ bers never knew.

"Military history and in partic­ ular World War II has offered a never ending fascination for history buffs and anyone who had a member of their family involved in that period," Farina points out. "In a broader sense,

learning to have an understand­ ing and compassion for how the war had far reaching after effects on family members to this day."
