Howard University Cancer Center Tops Fundraising Goal

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Howard University Cancer Center’s annual Rosemary Williams Breast Cancer Brunch recently exceeded its $100,000 fundraising goal, furthering the center’s mission to eliminate breast cancer disparities for minority women.

The brunch honored the late Rosemary Williams who was a tireless advocate for equal access to quality health care for underserved women. To honor Williams’ legacy, proceeds raised through the brunch support the center’s critical breast cancer disparity programs which include screening and other patient-centered services.

Poor health can make cold temps more intense

Temperatures across the northern tier of the United States are bitterly cold, but low body fat levels and thyroid dysfunction may make it feel worse, says Jagdish Khubchandani, associate professor of community health at Ball State University.

He noted that people without proper levels of body fat, which serves to insulate the body, may feel colder.

“People who eat too little over a long period of time or those who are young and old may have unhealthy levels of body fat,” Khubchandani said. “There are others who go on these extreme diets and significantly reduce their body fat levels, which can cause a person to shiver almost uncontrollably when it gets as cold as it is now.”

According to the professor, a healthy body fat percentage is 12-15 percent for young men and 25-28 percent for young women

SPRINGFIELD – Claiming your unclaimed property is now easier, according to Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs.

There are two new ways to claim your unclaimed property.

E-Claiming allows the public to upload necessary claim information in an electronic format on the Treasurer’s Office website.

Fast Track allows quick approval and payment for simple, lower dollar amount claims. The automated review process compares the information submitted by the claimant to the information reported on the property, which could include social security numbers, past and current addresses, and past and current names.

Claims that involve estates, heirs and/ or deceased relatives often are more complex and likely would not be eligible for eClaim or Fast Track. For more information, visit ‪www.illinoistreasurer. gov/ICASH‬ .

The Music Teachers of Hyde Park will host their monthly Artist Series performance at the Blackstone Library on Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m.

The performance is part of the Chicago Public Library’s One Book, One Chicago program and will explore the life and achievements of Mavis Staples through Greg Kot’s book, “I’ll Take You There.”

“We are a group of independent music teachers who reside or teach in Hyde Park, South Shore, Woodlawn, and Kenwood,” said Irene Claude, music teacher and flutist for the upcoming performance.

“What we want to do is provide opportunities for our students to play in recitals, do workshops, and play in concertos with orchestras.”

The Artist Series is presented every month by the Music Teachers of Hyde Park to give the teachers an opportunity to perform and potential students to observe for free.

This months performance will explore the life and music of Mavis Staples, an American rhythm and blues and gospel singer from Chicago, and the effect her music had on the civil rights movement.

“We do the Artist Series at the library every year and we were just lucky to be included in the library’s One Book, One Chicago program,” said Claude.

The One Book, One Chicago program is happening at several

Chicago Public Library locations across the city. The program launched in Fall 2001 as an opportunity to engage residents and build communities through reading.

The Artist Series performance is always given by teachers associated with the Music Teachers of Hyde Park.

“It’s good for us to continue to perform because it gives us joy, the reason we are teaching is that we love music,” said Claude. “It challenges us and it keeps our performance chops up. To give a recital is a whole new ball game and I think it makes us better teachers when we can perform.”

Music Teachers of Hyde Park have explored holding the Artist Series at other library’s around the city but have ultimately always ended up at the Blackstone.

“I think what happened is that Music Teachers of Hyde Park, along with another group, actually raised funds to purchase a very nice piano for the Blackstone Library and since the piano is at the library we do our performance there, and we want to make sure we give back to the community and particularly to the library,” said Claude.

Illinois Politicians Address Chicago’s Gun Violence

In light of three homicides in the first two days of 2018, Democratic Candidate for Governor, Chris Kennedy and his Democratic running mate, Ra Joy, along with Congressman Danny K. Davis, Representative Bobby Rush, Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin and Alderman Rick Munoz held a press conference addressing Chicago’s gun violence, at Sunrise Baptist Church, 1101 S. Central Park Ave. Chris Kennedy said too often Illinois and local elected officials get away with saying they’ve found a solution to violence when they’ve barely scratched the surface of the problem.

Kennedy explained that the city of Chicago’s administration is using a selective attainment strategy, allowing violence to continue as long as it happens in certain neighborhoods.

“There is an “88 rule” where 80 percent of the violence occurs in just eight percent of the city,” Kennedy said. “Now, [the city’s administration] is cutting off resources to people of color, forcing them out of the city and economic development.”

Community activist and Southside business-owner Nate Pendleton, whose 15-year old daughter, Hadiya Pendleton, was killed four years ago, said he has spoken to numerous politicians in Washington D.C. to figure out why better gun laws aren’t being enforced, but only received non-implemented solutions.

“I’ve met a lot of parents who lost their kids and we all share the same look of despair and we’re looking for someone to speak out,” Pendleton said. “Kennedy has a passion to stand against the NRA who is fighting tirelessly to keep guns on our streets.”

Democratic running mate, Ra Joy highlighted that in 2017, Chicago saw more murders than New York and Los Angeles combined and local community, North Lawndale, saw a 20

percent murder increase.

Joy continued to say that far too many of the children in Chicago are growing up in survival mode, dealing with the aftermaths of unbelievable violence and are being denied basic mental health resources. Illinois’ School Code says at least one school social worker should be set to every 250 students, yet in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) there is only one school social worker for every 960 students.

“These staggering numbers don’t tell the full story,” Joy said.

“What is impossible to measure is the human toll, physiological trauma of violence and the incomprehensible loss of a son, daughter, grandson or father. Physiological trauma, if untreated, can lead to more cycles of violence and Chicago’s kids are living in a deadly cycle of unbelievable trauma and violence.”

Congressman Danny Davis said Chicago, Cook County and the State of Illinois, rather than sticking their heads in the sand and saying there isn’t much we can do, must attack gun violence head on.

“Chris Kennedy is determined to use the Governor’s office to help Illinois understand that we can do something about the gun violence we are experiencing every day,” Davis said.

“Kennedy can have the platform designed to uplift humanity, deal with poverty and make sure resources are used effectively so young people know there is hope and possibility.”

Representative Bobby Rush explained that Illinois needs to form an economic program that deals with the violence that mothers continuously face.

“There is an economic violence that’s taking place along with disinvestment in local neighborhoods and until we get to the core of violence, we will never solve it,” Rush said. There is nothing that disturbs the soul more in hearing a mother or sister scream after the doctor tells them their son or loved one didn’t make it. But Kennedy can diminish this around the state of Illinois.”

State Rep. Jaime Andrade, chairman of the Illinois House Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and IT Committee, recently announced the creation of a new subcommittee on cryptocurrencies and distributed ledgers.

Andrade, D-Chicago, leads the full Cybersecurity Committee to review critical questions over how Illinois oversees the challenges that come with technological innovation, such as how online companies keep personal data shared on their platforms private and secure.

The cryptocurrency subcommittee will be chaired by state Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, who already has been working on legislative oversight of Bitcoin and the block chain to ensure the innovative economic tools can be fully and securely implemented in Illinois. Zalewski also leads on critical financial issues as chairman of the Illinois House Revenue and Finance Committee.

“In my work on other technological advances such as fantasy sports and ride-sharing services, we have found ourselves trying to catch up to popular services,” Rep. Mike Zalewski said. “As lawmakers, we all want government to run more efficiently and transparently. Distributed ledger technology has the promise to do just that -- replace old antiquated systems with a modern approach to serving citizens’ needs. My hope is we can understand whether Bitcoin is the right investment or a risky gamble, and create policy that puts consumers first.”

Bitcoin transactions work on a decentralized network of computers around the world, instead of through traditional paper and electronic payment transactions. Bitcoin’s value has been volatile in recent months, facing infrastructure challenges and high transaction fees. The lawmakers said the subcommittee will be the perfect vehicle for policymakers to better understand Bitcoin technology.

“Technology can quickly outpace our state’s laws, and create unforeseen problems,” Andrade said. “I am confident Rep. Zalewski and this subcommittee will consider Bitcoin’s future carefully and allow us to support both innovation and consumer safety.”

South Suburban College will be offering a Free Highway Construction Careers Training Program this spring at their Oak Forest Campus.

Orientation and Assessment Testing will be January 30-February 1, 2018 at the Oak Forest Center, with the program set to begin on February 26, 2018.

The Highway Construction Careers Training Program has been implemented to increase the number of minorities, women, and disadvantaged individuals working on IDOT highway construction projects. The training consists of an intensive 12-week program to learn the skills necessary for acceptance into the highway construction trades and gives the opportunity for a career with high wage potential.

Actress, model and activist Naomi Campbell came up with the initial idea for the collaboration.

CHICAGO – My Wonderful Birthday Suit!, Chicago Children’s Theatre’s highly entertaining, timely and important new play for young audiences, will captivate children with its festive birthday party atmosphere.

They were also admirers of Chicago author Michael Tyler’s popular children’s book, The Skin You Live In. With Tyler’s encouraging words and vibrant illustrations by David Lee Csicsko, The Skin You Live In is a visual delight, and a wonderful springboard for positive conversations with children about skin color and outward appearances.

Clunie’s intention with My Wonderful Birthday Suit! is to create a work for the stage bursting with kindness and generosity. In the story, the surprise sharing of an amazing gift symbolizes one of the play’s key themes: that because of the wonders on both the outside and the inside of us, we are all gifts to be treasured and celebrated.

Two Women of Power Deliver FAMU’s Fall Commencement Speeches The first female and 117th bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Vashti McKenzie and alumna and Allstate Insurance Executive Cheryl Harris addressed Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) fall 2017 graduates. Approximately 630 FAMU graduates were cheered on by family, friends, faculty, staff, alumni, and other guests during two ceremonies.

Harris spoke on Friday, December 15 at 6 p.m., at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium. McKenzie delivered her message in the Lawson Center on Saturday, December 16 at 9 a.m.

There are more than enough challenges in the world already and sometimes life can be really difficult. Why add to the difficulties by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk. As it has been said, “Don’t fill your boat with water. The storm will do that all on its own.” Each of us needs a champion, a coach, and a cheerleader.

Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, don’t just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, don’t tell yourself that you should have anyway; recognize how much you are helping yourself. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve, but don’t beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. Be patient with yourself.

You may not be a finished work just yet. Every constructive thing you can say to yourself will help. Speak life!
