Chicago, IL – The Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) recently endorsed JB Pritzker for governor, which is the largest public-sector union to make an endorsement in the race. The Illinois Federation of Teachers joins 30 other individual unions along with the Illinois AFL-CIO to support JB Pritzker’s campaign.

Sleep Position and Stillbirth Risk: Is There a Connection?

Researchers in the UK say they have found a link between a woman sleeping on her back during late pregnancy and an increased risk of her suffering a stillbirth.A team of researchers at Tommy’s Stillbirth Research Centre at the University of Manchester interviewed more than 1,000 women - 291 of whom had a stillbirth late in the pregnancy. The women were interviewed about their sleeping positions, along with a number of other factors.

The researchers say their data showed that sleeping on the back more than doubled a woman’s risk of late stillbirth.

However, according to Dr. Michael Leonardi, a high risk obstetrician and director of obstetrics at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, while the findings are something to consider, it’s not necessarily a cause and effect relationship.

THE EXTRAORDINARY DIPLOMATIC CAREER OF THE ‘LITTLE ELAM GIRL’ FROM BOSTON In her new memoir Diversifying Diplomacy (Potomac Books, 2017), Ambassador Harriet Lee Elam-Thomas shares the story of her life as a young black woman who distinguished herself with a diplomatic career at a time when few colleagues looked like her.

Ambassador Elam-Thomas’s memoir is a firsthand account of her decadeslong career in the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service, recounting her experiences of making U.S. foreign policy, culture, and values understood abroad. Elam-Thomas served as a United States ambassador to Senegal (2000–2002) and retired with the rank of career minister after forty-two years as a diplomat.

It was announced in a press conference on Dec. 6 that the corner of 34th and Indiana, where Pilgrim Baptist Church once stood, will become home to the National Museum of Gospel Music. The project is lead by Don Jackson, CEO of Central City Productions and founder of the Stellar Gospel Music Awards, and designed by Chicago architect Dirk Lohan.

“The light bulb came on when I was in Pilgrim and walking through the ashes over there,” said Jackson. “There is a lot of synergy, Chicago is the birth place of Gospel Music, Thomas A Dorsey is the father of gospel music, Pilgrim Baptist Church has done a great job creating this genre of Gospel Music and we do the Stellar Gospel Music Awards, and I was chairman of the DuSable Museum for some 11 years so I know a little bit about the museum industry and that was enough to get us started.”

Set to open in September of 2020, the museum will preserve the exterior walls of Pilgrim Baptist Church to create a new modern structure.

“We will not restore or rebuild the church exactly the way it was, but we will build a new contemporary modern museum with a performance space that is shaped and formed very much like the original space in the church,” said Lohan. “We will preserve the old walls to be admired not only from the outside but also to be seen from the inside.”

Pilgrim Baptist Church has sat in ruins since 2006 after a fire destroyed almost all of the structure leaving only the exterior walls to represent the space that many people regard as the home of gospel music.

“I stood on the corner of 34th and Indiana on that cold day watching in despair as Pilgrim Baptist Church was burning,” said Alderman Pat Dowell. “I can recall on that day having members of the church walk up in disbelief and just crying.”

Alderman Dowell, 3rd ward, has been instrumental in getting support from the city for the project and vowed to make sure that every resource the city has to offer is utilized on this project.

“I know that this proposal coming to fruition adds another key asset to our community for historic and heritage tourism.” said Dowell Not only is Dowell motivated by the draw that the new museum will create for tourism in Bronzeville, but even more so because there is “a hole in our landscape that has not been filled” since the fire at Pilgrim.

As a freshman in college at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Lohan lived about a block away from Pilgrim Baptist Church. He remembers taking walks with his friends past Pilgrim and hearing the gospel music that was being preformed inside. He acknowledges this as his first exposure to gospel music some sixty years ago.

“On Sundays, and even Saturdays when they were rehearsing, there was fantastic music coming out of [Pilgrim],” said Lohan. “We walked in for the first time and we were so captivated by this optimistic, vital, and joyous music that we came several times.”

Since then, Lohan has been building a career as an architect in Chicago. He has done a number of preservation related building projects.

New Market Rate Housing Construction Begins Leasing in Woodlawn By: Katherine Newman

The Trianon Lofts, a new four-story apartment building in Woodlawn, offer affordable housing along with market rate apartment pricing and are currently leasing. This is the first new market rate housing construction in this neighborhood in over forty years.

“We are trying to simultaneously do two things. We are trying to create and preserve as much of the affordable housing that exists in Woodlawn as possible, while at the same time trying to help develop a market for market rate housing,” said William Eager, Vice President of the Preservation of Affordable Housing, Inc. (POAH) for the Chicago Area.

“So in the end the community will have both a mix of pure market rate and affordable housing so hopefully in the long run you have a balanced mixed income community.”

POAH is a affordable housing nonprofit with offices in Chicago, Boston and Washington, D.C. The building offers half of it’s units at market value, 5 units are available as fifty percent Area Median income(AMI), a measurement used to set rent levels in Chicago, and 7 are available at eighty percent AMI. “It’s a metro area measure, so the median income for a two person household is about $60,000. half of that is roughly $30,000 and eighty percent is around $48,000 so thats kind of the range on the affordable units,” said Eager.

Residents are just beginning to move into the new building and about fifty percent of the units have been leased, according to Eagar. He expects all of the units to be leased by the end of February.

other possibilities for Cottage Grove and the blocks around it,” said Eager.

“Woodlawn is really on the verge of some economic growth that will serve both market rate people and people of more limited incomes.”

Community Meeting Held to Address Concerns About Bronzeville Business By: Katherine Newman

A community hearing was held at City Hall on Dec. 6 to address alleged complaints, made by community members in Bronzeville, against Jimmy’s Food and Deli located at the corner of 35th St. and S. Prairie Ave. The meeting was facilitated by Vera Elue, Senior Attorney for the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection (BACP).

There are several steps that are taken to get a business back on track when they are found to be in noncompliance with the law. The city will investigate and issue a fine, hold a mediation conference, or finally they will arrange to have a community hearing.

“When the business is so bad and has gotten out of hand, we will call a community hearing and that is a hearing where the alderman will be there, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) will be there, the community will be there and we are looking at the business and the problems they have created,” said Elue.

This was the first community meeting for Jimmy’s Food and Deli.

Alderman Sophia King attended on behalf of the fourth ward that she represents.

“The level of respect and the bar that you set for your community has to show that you respect the community and that you understand you are part of the community and being part of the community,” said King.

“You need to accept responsibility for the type of business you run and for the type of people that you attract.”

Officer Holley, a CPD officer assigned to the 211 beat where Jimmy’s is located, attended the meeting to provide information about the types of service calls he has responded to, from Jan. 1 to Dec. 5, in regards to the business.

“We received approximately 270 calls of services ranging from quality of life issues, drug selling, selling of loose cigarettes, loitering, solicitation, basically hanging out at Jimmy’s food market,” said Holley.

Before the meeting concluded, the business was given an opportunity to speak. Michelle Trusedale, the attorney representing Jimmy’s Food and Deli spoke on behalf of the business. Also in attendance were

the owner of the business, the store manager, and the building owner.

“My client has been keeping a list of those calls for service,” said Trusedale. “On a daily basis if not more than once a day, my client has called 911 for hanging out, for fighting, for loitering, for stealing.”

On June 27, the business had a meeting with Crystal King-Smith, CPD Commander of the 2nd District, to discuss a plan of action to get the business back into good standing with the community and law enforcement, according to Truesdale.

“We sat in her office at the district and made a list with eight points of what needs to be done to fix the issues that were brought to our attention of loitering, and people hanging out, and crime in the area,” said Trusedale.

The business has been able to accomplish most everything on the list with the exception of hiring licensed and bonded security and obtaining a permit to add cameras to the exterior of the building, according to Truesdale.

Moving forward, Elue provided the business with a new list of reasonable steps to better their business.

Elue asked the business to change their hours to be open from 10 a.m.-5p.m., hire licensed and bonded security, obtain the permit to hang exterior cameras and link them to CPD, keep a 911 call, 311 call, and cleaning log book, provide better lighting outside of the business, and provide an inventory list to BACP. “Fines that we issue are good, but there is something that’s better than fines and that is compliance,” said Elue. “Every business is important but none is more important than the community,” A business may have up to three community meetings. If the issues are not resolved after the third meeting, it will be closed unsuccessfully.

“Once we close the meeting as unsuccessful the next step will be to go to the court room next door, where we recommend to the law department that we go after the businesses license to get the license away from the bad business,” said Elue.

The next community meeting for Jimmy’s Food and Deli is scheduled for Jan. 9.

Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th), Congresswoman Robin Kelly, and Bill Foster (11th) recently endorsed Fritz Kaegi for Cook County Assessor. The Cook County Assessor election is gearing up to be one of closely watched campaigns in Cook County.

The Chicago Teachers Union(CTU) House of Delegates recently completed its first round of endorsements CTU has chosen to support four champions of democracy and public education.

Brandon Johnson is a longtime CTU member and staffer in the organizing department. Brandon’s focus is to support services that support students, physical and mental health care, restorative justice programs and the revenue needed to make sure those services are available to all who need them, and protect those who do the work.

Delia Ramirez,former president of the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, has been an education organizer in Logan Square and Humboldt Park for many years. She opposed the 2013 school closings and charter expansion and supports progressive revenue and using the money to fund not only school needs but affordable housing, too. Delia is endorsed by CTU affiliates United Working Families and Grassroots Illinois Action.

Rep. Sonya Harper is a strong CTU ally and the chief House sponsor of HB 3720, a bill to reform the TIF program in Chicago. The bill tightens the rules around development projects to clearly determine how much money is available, adds a provision that TIF funds could be used for special education and trauma supports in schools, and directs large TIF payments to CPS every year instead of downtown developers. Rep. Harper passed the bill out of the House (with a veto-proof majority) last spring.

Rep. Rob Martwick is one of the CTU’s strongest allies in the Illinois General Assembly. He is the chief sponsor of HB 1774, the bill for an elected school board for Chicago.

His work on this bill has moved CPS closer to an elected school board than at any other point in history. Rep. Martwick sponsored legislation that requires funding to follow students when they transfer between charter and traditional schools and a bill to outlaw for-profit charter schools.

Thornton Township Hosts Christmas Care Program

Thornton Township recently held it’s annual Christmas Care Program in South Holland.

“Thornton Township gave away more than 4,500 toys to community residents as well as 7,000 free holiday food baskets during its annual Christmas Care Program, according to Ernst Lamothe Jr., Public and Community Relations Manager.

“The township enjoys helping families. That is what local government is supposed to do,” said Jill Manning, Director of Special Projects and Coordinator of the Christmas Care Program. “The community really comes out for this program and we are going to continue having this event for our residents.”

The LUV Institute Provides Entrepreneurial Opportunity for Youths to Create Holiday Wreaths Chicago, IL – The Love, Unity and Values (LUV) Institute held its fifth annual Wreaths of LUV Entrepreneurial Program to stimulate creativity and teach basic business principles to youths during the holiday season. This year, 21 male students between the ages of 14 and 20 decorated and sold fresh wreaths while learning sales and customer service techniques.

Cosette Yisrael, executive director and founder of The LUV Institute, says the program has come a long way since its beginnings.

The wreaths were made of live, fresh fraser fir and captured the spirit of the holiday season.

Each wreath was 22” and decorated with berried juniper, incense cedar, pine cones, a handmade bow, colored bulbs, and were customizable.

The Luv Institute is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that targets at-risk youth who have experienced time in foster care and state-funded group homes, or in the juvenile justice system.

The LUV Institute’s youth programs are designed to help students learn coping skills, complete school and prepare them for successful entry into the workforce, often as entrepreneurs.

(BPT) - There are so many choices when shopping for a smartphone these days, and the differences can be very subtle. Here are some of the key things you’ll want to look at to make sure you find the one that works best for your needs.

Operating System (OS): There are two different operating systems to choose from. iOS works with iPhones, while Android operates with a wider variety of smartphones, like those from Samsung or Motorola. In general, iOS is considered easier to use, but you need to have an Apple device. Android gives you more options, plus the ability to customize with third-party software and widgets.

Screen size: Get the right-size screen for the things you’ll want to do.

Buy a phone with a screen smaller than 5.5 inches if one-hand use is important to you or if you have smaller hands. Get a bigger-screen phone if you like to watch a lot of videos or play games, or simply want to have an easier time navigating on your touchscreen.

Camera: Most people now use their phones as their primary camera, so the right selection here will be an especially important one. More and more smartphones boast cameras with at least 12 megapixels, so don’t go by only that stat. Instead, focus on individual camera specs and special features like dual lenses or the ability to edit and enhance your photos.

Display: For a phone’s display, color quality and brightness matter more than resolution. Pay attention to how bright the display is, if it will be easy to see outdoors, and how colorful the panel is. The very latest

phones even offer high dynamic range (HDR) for displaying even more colors.

Design: Determining good smartphone design is purely subjective. Many people prefer a metal or glass design; others, plastic. If you’re concerned about durability, look for a phone that is water-resistant.

A handful of phones also now feature a shatterproof glass display, and many include a Gorilla Glass display to protect it from short drops (though a protective case will help with that, too).

Processor: Even midrange phones now offer satisfactory performance for nearly any user level or basic task. A good processor inside a phone will translate to faster open times for apps, smoother navigation and quicker photo editing.

Battery: Many factors, including the screen size,

processor and operating system, determine how long a smartphone lasts on a charge. A decent benchmark is to look for a smartphone with a battery capacity of at least 3,000 mAh. Any phone that lasts longer than 9 hours of straight 4G LTE use is considered very good.

Storage: Given that some apps and games can easily take up more than 1GB of storage, not to mention how many high-res photos and videos smartphone owners are capturing, go for as much internal storage as possible. Some models offer just 8Gb or 16Gb; however, the minimum on premium handsets these days is usually 32GB. Adding a micro SD card can also help expand your storage. This option’s available on many Android phones.

Price: Don’t pay for more than you need. The latest iPhone and premium Android phones start around $650, and can easily run you $800 or more. But there are great options below $500, and even some solid choices for less than $200.

Carrier: A smartphone requires a talk and data plan. Choose a cellphone service provider that offers what you’ ll really use. Avoid expensive, one-size-fits-all plans. Consumer Cellular, for example, offers a wide variety of smartphone choices from entry level to top of the line, along with talk and data plans that cost their average customer less than $25 a month, with no contracts.

1 Juicebox Presented by Lifeway Foods Offers Free Family Performances

The popular free Juicebox series presented by Lifeway Foods will entertain and educate young children and their families with a schedule of music, dance groups and performance at the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and the Garfield Park Conservatory (300 N. Central Park Ave.). Among the season highlights are dance performances from China, Africa, Ireland, Brazil, India and Mexico. 3 simple tips to get delicious, balanced weeknight meals on the table (BPT) - Weekday schedules get crazy, which is why the first casualty of all that chaos is the family dinner.

While most families say eating together is a high priority, day-to-day reality is different. According to a 2013 poll by NPR and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, only half of children in the U.S. are in families that dine together. Yet research cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics shows that children reap many benefits from regular family meals, from improved academic performance to developing a deeper sense of resilience.

But busy families can find time to sit down together more often, says Colleen Burns, a lifestyle expert and spokeswoman for Nestle’s Balance Your Plate program. To be successful, set the intention with good planning and smart strategies. What’s more, these meals can also be delicious and nutritious.

“When you have simple solutions in your toolbox to get those well-balanced and tasty meals on the table in the little time that you have, it lets you establish and keep an important family ritual,” says Burns, who is also a busy mom of six boys.

“At the same time, you don’t get burned out, and that’s key to staying motivated and inspired.”

To help you get started, Burns shares her top three simple tips to get delicious and nutritious meals on the table quickly.

Shop the freezer section: When you’re in a time pinch, frozen foods have many offerings that set a good foundation for any home-cooked meal, Burns says. Oftentimes, the quality is just as good as their fresh counterparts, and they eliminate many steps of prep time, whether you’re looking at entrees, veggies or sides. On top of all that, fruits and veggies are flash-frozen, which locks the nutrients in place.

Don’t sacrifice: If you know what to look for when shopping the grocery aisles, you can find convenient entrees and sides without sacrificing taste or quality.

Burns recommends Stouffer’s Macaroni & Cheese as one easy solution that helps you get a great meal on the table. It has ingredients that consumers would use in their own kitchens, such as freshly made pasta, butter, cheddar cheese and milk.

Burns likes to serve it as a side to marinated chicken (see recipe below) and roasted seasonal veggies, because it’s a simple solution that makes her and her family feel good about dinner.

Maintain balance: Look to a variety of entrees and sides to bring a nutritional balance as well as delicious flavors to your dinner menu. Rising awareness of various medical applications in cannabis is one of the factors driving the market. 1 large lemon zested and juiced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3 whole cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon oregano 1 pinch each salt and pepper Minced parsley for garnish Honey Mustard Sauce: 3 tablespoons melted butter 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup mustard 1 tablespoon lemon juice Directions In a bowl, mix together lemon juice, zest, olive oil, chopped garlic, paprika, oregano, salt and pepper. Add chicken drumsticks and toss to coat evenly. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. When ready to cook, let chicken come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Arrange chicken on oiled foil-lined sheet pan.

Bake uncovered for 20 minutes. Flip chicken pieces and cook another 10 minutes until chicken reaches 165 degrees and is no longer pink.

Make sauce in a small bowl by whisking together the mustard and honey.

Add water as needed for a workable consistency.

With a small pastry brush, brush sauce over chicken and broil 5 minutes until bubbly.

Place chicken pieces on a serving platter and sprinkle minced parsley over all.

New York Archdiocese Pays Sexual Abuse Victims $40 Million Legal-Bay LLC, The Lawsuit Pre Settlement Funding Company, reported recently that the New York Archdiocese has paid out over 40 million dollars in compensation to 189 victims of clergy sexual abuse this year alone. The average claim comes to just over $211,000 per plaintiff.

The payouts are a result of the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, which was put into place earlier this year to address the multiple accusations against the New York Diocese. While the deadline for filing suit through the IRCP ended on November 30, some additional claims are still being processed.

AN EXCELLENT TIME TO TAKE INVENTORY

As we close out the remainder of year 2017, now is an excellent time to take inventory of the blessings and breakthroughs we enjoyed, the challenges and difficulties we persevered through, and the manner in which we confronted, resolved, and learned from the many things that happened in our lives over the past year. For many of us, this is also an excellent time to dedicate ourselves to ending any unpleasant cycles that may have consumed our thoughts, high jacked our emotions, and threatened our sense of connection to God and the power to create the life we deserve in the coming year.

Certainly, you are familiar with the definition of insanity as the act of repeating the same behavior over and over and expecting a different outcome.

This pearl of wisdom can be even more powerful when paired with the words from Romans 12:2, which in part says, “that you are to be transformed into a new person by changing the way you think.”

Remember, our lives are created from the inside out.

The understanding use of this principle positions each of us to be and live empowered.

However, in many ways 2017 deserves reflection even beyond what might have occurred in our own personal lives. Over the past twelve months, our nation has witnessed an attempt to legitimize the deficit in executive leadership along with his global direction of divisiveness, we saw many courageous #metoo women cause an inflection point that is still threatening to disrupt detestable behavioral norms, we witnessed a seemingly perpetual clash for tolerance and what it means to be an American, and Colin Kaepernick still does not have a football team.

We would do well to remember that what is happening in the collective can serve as a symbol for how we might recalibrate ourselves independently and interdependently. Be reminded that you have the ability to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (II Corinthians 10:5). If we are to live our best lives we should take care to hold the highest thoughts, speak the truest words, act in accord with the good desires of the heart, employ habits of a better tomorrow today, intentionally develop our character, and embrace our divine destiny. This mindfulness approach will enable us to circumvent repeating the same behaviors of 2017 and give birth to a New You in the New Year.

THE SECOND CITY TRAINING CENTER AND GIANT STEPS BRING ‘IMPROV FOR AUTISM’ TO THE SUBURBS CHICAGO - The Second City Training Center (SCTC), the world’s largest school of improvisation and part of Chicago’s legendary comedy institution, The Second City, is proud to bring its groundbreaking Improv for Autism classes to the Western suburbs.

Beginning Saturday, January 13th, the SCTC’s Wellness Program workshops will be offered at Giant Steps school in Lisle, IL. Giant Steps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a specialized, therapeutic day school for children and young adults living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Improv for Autism has been successfully running at The Second City Training Center in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood since 2014, serving both teens and adults.

“The early research in this area has shown that improvisation has a discernible positive effect in improving communication and prosocial behaviors in individuals with autism. We are thrilled to partner with Giant Steps so that we can collectively help more kids, parents, teachers and friends in this wonderful community,” said Kelly Leonard, Executive Director of Insights & Applied Improvisation for The Second City.

The classes at Giant Steps school will be held each Saturday at 2:00 p.m., for eight weeks. Each class session is 90 minutes long. Classes are open to students, ages 14-18, with a primary diagnosis of autism. The cost for registration at secondcity.com is $295 per student.

Not since the Combahee River Collective statement was written some 40 years ago have Black women gathered to create an agenda that explicitly addresses the unique intersectionality of Black women. The event will take place in Atlanta, GA, February 22 - 25, 2018.

(BPT) - Once a newly licensed teen gets behind the wheel for the first time without a parent or guardian, the taste of freedom is exhilarating.

But a teenager’s lack of behind-the-wheel experience puts them at greater risk of getting into an accident. Add factors like passengers, loud music and stress, and the situation can quickly turn dire.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, with one in three teen deaths caused by vehicle crashes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

To help teens navigate into this new responsibility safely, there are lots of resources out there to help them. For example, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and The UPS Foundation have come together to create the UPS Road Code program, which is available in 57 Boys & Girls Clubs across 46 U.S. cities. This is a free program that educates teens on safe driving principles and best practices for road safety.

Taught by UPS employees who volunteer their time, the program offers classroom instruction along with practice time behind the wheel of a virtual driving simulator.

The UPS instructors share insights they have learned through the company’s in-depth defensive driving training.

“The thing that has really hit home for me is the fact that driving a car is a huge responsibility,” said CeCe McNeal, the national teen ambassador, east region, for the UPS Road Code program.

The program’s national teen ambassador, west region, Jaylen Vinson added, “Whenever I get into the car, before I turn the key, I remind myself that I’m in control of the car and I’m in charge of the choices I make on the road.”

Whether you have a teen in your life who needs some guidance, or you would like some reminders of how to be more mindful while on the road, here are some tips and insights that McNeal and Vinson learned during the course that can help drivers of all ages avoid risky behavior on the road.

Delete Distractions: If your attention is on something other than driving - texting, eating, turning the radio dial, talking to a passenger or on the phone - you’re putting yourself at greater risk of getting into a crash. And with every crash, you also risk the lives of your fellow passengers and everyone else out on the road.

Mind the Speed: Sometimes we don’t pay attention to the speed limit, which can lead to harmful consequences very fast. Increased speed can result in an expensive traffic ticket, along with raised insurance rates. But, most importantly, speeding reduces your time to react to hazards and increases your likelihood of getting into a dangerous collision.

Plan for the Weather: Get into the habit of checking the weather before you plan your trip. Driving in heavy rain, snow and ice can be stressful and slippery for any driver. So, when the conditions are bad and you have to head out, give yourself extra time. And if you’re still running behind schedule, just remember, it’s always better to be late than end up in a serious crash because you are rushing.

Never Drive While Impaired: Alcohol and other substances can impair your vision and reaction time, which can lead to a greater likelihood of being in a fatal crash. In fact, in 2016 there were 10,497 people in the United States killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes and an average of one alcohol-

impaired driving fatality happens every 50 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Driving under the influence is never worth the risk.

Look and Think Ahead: One key to being a good driver is staying focused on the road and what’s around you, so you can spot the hazards and respond to them immediately. Be aware of others sharing the road with you, including bicyclists and pedestrians, and leave enough space between you and the other cars to allow for reaction time. Scan the road ahead, especially intersections, while also remembering to check those rear and sideview mirrors regularly.

“If you don’t handle your car in a safe manner at all times, it can turn into a deadly weapon against others on the road, your passengers and yourself,” McNeal said. “Keeping these tips top of mind before getting behind the wheel can reduce the risks faced on the road and help to make the roads safer for us all.”
