“For the past several years, we’ve been exhibiting robots during National Robotics Week as well as our traveling exhibit, Robotic Revolution,” MSI Director of Collections Kathleen McCarthy said. “What we’ve found is that people just absolutely love robots.

The robots sort of come to life and their engaging and people love to see these machines come to life and see what they can do.”

McCarthy explained that Robotics is a fast-changing field so MSI guests will see the newest robots that are coming out of research labs and competitions.

“The purpose of the event is to celebrate the United States as a leader in robotics technology development, educate the public about how robotics technology impacts society, both now and in the future, advocate for increased funding for robotics

McCarthy said MSI understands the importance of robots and how vital they will be to the future of citizen’s daily lives so the museum’s desire is to allow people in Chicago to experience and learn about this new technology.

She continued to say that as technology advances and as everything becomes smarter,

there will be more careers in computer science and a greater need for computer scientists, especially with current selfdriving cars and refrigerators that send in grocery orders.

“I think it’s really important for students to get introduced to the technologies that will be a part of their future,” McCarthy said. “They can think about it in terms of how they live their lives and potential careers because robots are going to be our companions, co-workers and robots are a great way to learn about computing skills and programming.”

Other displays during National Robotics Week will be demonstrations from universities and after-school and hobbyist robotics teams. The Museum of Science and Industry entry cost will be $18 for adults and $11 for kids between the ages of 3-11, according to msichicago.org.

Legislators announce bill to limit charter school expansion

State Rep. Will Guzzardi and other lawmakers announced plans to push a new law that would significantly limit the growth of charter school operations in financially distressed school districts, citing the immediate, wrenching financial crisis at the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), which could face early closure June 1. At a press conference Monday, Rep. Guzzardi, Rep. Mary Flowers, Rep. Luis Arroyo, Sen. Omar Aquino, Ald. Milly Santiago (31) and Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36) urged the Illinois General Assembly to pass HB 3567 to establish a moratorium on new charter operations in financially distressed school districts.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) uses its School District Financial Profile to evaluate the fiscal health of districts around the state. HB 3567 would put a moratorium on charter expansion in districts labeled “financial early warning” or “financial watch,” the two lowest tiers. Roughly 90 districts around the state fall into those categories, including Chicago Public Schools.

This bill would not affect currently operating charter schools, but would prevent new campuses from opening.

Ald. Villegas cited the struggle in recent months among local leaders and community organizations to try to halt the expansion of a Noble charter school on the Northwest Side. “The Governor has dismissed any real efforts at addressing CPS’ governance and revenue issues,” said Ald. Santiago. ”His rhetoric and actions are dangerous and jeopardize students’ education. This bill provides protections and a tangible opportunity to establish effective solutions to the over-expansion of charter operations. I urge the Mayor and his Board of Education to support this measure and protect the district.”

Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Honors 35 Vietnam War Veterans

Vietnam War Veterans were recently honored and thanked for their service during the Vietnam War at the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veterans Home in LaSalle, Illinois. During the ceremony, a total of 35 Veterans were honored with a 50-year commemoration pin and certificate. This national commemoration was authorized by Congress, established under the Secretary of Defense, and launched by the President as follows: In 2007, the 110th Congress incorporated language in H.R. 4986 authorizing the Secretary of Defense to conduct a program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. “The celebration is to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War, including personnel who were held as prisoners of war, or listed as missing in action, for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States, and to thank and honor the families of these veterans,” said IDVA Director Erica Jeffries. “These veterans put their lives on the line for us. They deserve our recognition and respect for the sacrifices they undertook for our nation.”

The Commemoration honors all United States veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time between November 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975, regardless of location. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that today there are 7 million living Vietnam veterans and 9 million families of those who served in this time frame. We make no distinction between veterans who served in-country, in-theater, or who were stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War period. All were called to serve and the overwhelming majority of these veterans served honorably and admirably.

Mulroe works to move emissions testing centers back to Chicago

Chicago residents may no longer be forced to drive to the suburbs for their vehicle emissions testing based on new legislation sponsored by State Senator John Mulroe (D-Chicago). After emissions test sites closed in the Chicagoland area in November, Mulroe introduced legislation to require the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to locate vehicle emissions inspections stations within a five-mile radius of those subject to testing.

“By closing emissions testing facilities in Chicago, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has created an undue burden on Chicago residents to meet the emission testing requirement” Mulroe said. “Getting a vehicle’s emissions tested can already be a time-consuming task in and of itself. We should not add to that by forcing Chicagoans to driver further to fulfill this obligation.”

The Illinois Vehicle Emissions Testing Program was established by federal law to improve air quality and public health in large cities. Current state law requires emissions test sites to be located within a 12-mile radius of vehicle owners subject to testing. Cars manufactured in 1996 or later must have its emissions tested after it is 4 years old.

“The goal of the emissions testing is to reduce air pollution from vehicles,” Mulroe said. “We shouldn’t be increasing pollution by forcing individuals to drive further from their homes for testing.”

Harmony Health Plan Teams with AIDS Foundation of Chicago to Support Community-Based Services CHICAGO and TAMPA, Fla. - After launching a successful pilot program in 2016, Harmony Health Plan, Inc., a WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG) company, will continue to support the Knowledge and Collaboration Center for Capacity Building at the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC).

Launched last year with a $5,000 grant from Harmony, the Center works directly with community-based organizations to create and tailor trainings to support their unique organizational and development needs. Through the program, five groups received consultant time with a value of $1,500 to support capacity building, leadership development, financial management and strategic planning, which will help the organizations serve a larger number of community members.

Harmony doubled its support this year with a $10,000 contribution.

Last year, the funds helped provide capacity building training for organizations such as the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus who applied for and gained Chicago Department of Public Health funds. The program allowed the Chicago Women’s AIDS Project to improve marketing outreach and gave the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago tools it needed to increase availability of legal services for people living with HIV. Project VIDA also used the program to gain Chicago Department of Public Health funding.

“The organizations AFC selected last year used these funds to improve fundraising, marketing and other organizational skills to help them support those affected by HIV and AIDS,” said Miguel Torres, senior director, field sales and marketing at

Harmony Health Plan. “Our 2017 sponsorship will allow AFC to expand both the number of organizations served and provide more intensive support to participating agencies, helping them to fill gaps in funding for infrastructure, which is difficult for small organizations to raise.”

“Now more than ever, as the Illinois budget impasse forces agencies to cut budgets and services, it is important to build partnerships with organizations that are working to make a difference in their communities and in the lives of the people we serve,” said David Reynolds, Harmony acting president and WellCare north division senior vice president. “Harmony’s grant to the AIDS Foundation of Chicago will have an impact on the city for years to come as community organizations become stronger through skills and development training.”

“Because of Harmony’s grant, AFC will, once again, provide hands-on support and comprehensive, one-on-one trainings to community-based organizations in structural improvements, organizational management, leadership training and grant applications,” said John Peller, president/CEO of AFC. “With a lack of state budget in Illinois and an ever-changing health care environment, these resources are critically important, and we are grateful for Harmony’s steadfast support of AFC and its capacity building initiatives.”

As of Dec. 31, 2016, WellCare and Harmony Health Plan serve approximately 209,000 members in Illinois, including 166,000 Medicaid members, 16,000 Medicare Advantage plan members and 27,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members.

Should Marijuana Be Legalized?

Marijuana advocates are trying to lay the groundwork for Illinois to become the first state in the Midwest and the ninth nationwide to legalize recreational pot, arguing the move will help solve the state’s notorious budget crisis, according to an Associated Press release.

As of right now, marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug, especially for young people throughout in the United States. A 2015 study shows that more than 11 million young adults between the ages of 18-25 used marijuana, according to drug abuse.gov.

Renee M. Johnson, who is an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Mental Health, said this is common because marijuana is pleasurable and less harmful than other drugs on the market like cocaine or heroin due to its easier withdrawal syndrome.

“More than 50 percent of the American public believes that it should be legalized for recreational purposes,” Johnson said. “It’s not common for people to stigmatize it like cocaine or heroin.”

The drug, “marijuana is referred to dried leaves, flowers, stems and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.

The plant contains the mind-altering chemical delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other related compounds.

Extracts can also be made from the cannabis plant,” according to drug abuse.gov.

While the drug has benefits, especially for medical patients, Johnson didn’t deny the fact that marijuana also has negative effects as well.Regular use of marijuana poses “public health concerns such as reduced educational achievements,

risks of injuries when driving, increase respiratory problems, cancer, COPD and heart disease,” Johnson said.

“What we have found amongst African Americans is that overall, they are less likely to use [the drug] Johnson said. But among the African Americans who do use, they are more likely to have problems like addictions or substance abuse-disorders, she said.

“There are negatives with every drug,” PDI Medical Chief Operation Officer Joseph Friedman said. “One of the less negatives with cannabis is that there has never been any reported overdoses or deaths from cannabis. Now, people have gotten high and made wrong choices from cannabis, but cannabis itself has not shut down doors that a number of medications can do,” he said.

According to an Associated Press release, two Illinois state lawmakers proposed legislation a few weeks ago that would allow citizens who are “21 and older to possess, grow or buy up to an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana and license businesses to sell marijuana products subject to regulation. They say it would help fill Illinois’ multibillion-dollar budget hole with $350 to $700 million in new tax revenue. The proposal is being launched at a time when the federal government is considering ramping up enforcement against recreational use. As of now, the Department of Justice and Attorney General Jeff Sessions are reviewing an administration memo by Former President Barack Obama, which helped other states obtain flexibility in passing marijuana laws.

“Legalizing or removing penalties will hopefully reduce some of the criminal justice outcomes,” Johnson said.

“However, I think it’s among the same story as other drugs.

But I think because Blacks have less of a social safety net for resources...substance abuse becomes more risky,” he said.

CHICAGO, IL - According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, there are 588,000 people providing unpaid care to someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia in Illinois. The level of assistance provided by caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias tends to be extensive. As symptoms worsen and the amount of care needed continues to increase, caregivers report stress, anxiety and even depression at high rates. In honor of National Stress Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter offers tips to help manage stress throughout the role of caregiving.

Know what community resources are available.

Adult day programs, in-home assistance, visiting nurses and meal delivery are just some of the services that can help you manage daily tasks. Use the online Community Resource Finder or contact your local Alzheimer’s Association office for assistance in finding Alzheimer’s care resources in your community.

Get help and find support.

The online Care Team Calendar helps you organize friends and family who want to help provide care and support. A 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900), ALZConnected

online community and local support groups are all good sources for finding comfort and reassurance. If stress becomes overwhelming, seek professional help.

Use relaxation techniques.

There are several simple relaxation techniques that can help relieve stress. Try more than one to find which works best for you. Techniques include: Visualization (mentally picturing a place or situation that is peaceful and calm) Meditation (which can be as simple as dedicating 15 minutes a day to letting go of all stressful thoughts) Breathing exercises (slowing your breathing and focusing on taking deep breaths) Progressive muscle relaxation (tightening and then relaxing each muscle group, starting at one end of your body and working your way to the other end) Get moving.

Physical activity — in any form — can help reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing. Even 10 minutes of exercise a day can help. Take a walk. Do an activity you love, such as gardening or dancing.

Find time for yourself.

Consider taking advantage of respite care so you can spend time doing something you enjoy. Respite care provides caregivers with

a temporary rest from caregiving, while the person with Alzheimer’s disease continues to receive care in a safe environment.

Become an educated caregiver.

As the disease progresses, new caregiving skills may be necessary. The Alzheimer’s Association offers programs in-person, online and over the phone to help you better understand and cope with the behaviors and personality changes that often accompany Alzheimer’s. You may also find it helpful to talk to other care partners and caregivers about how they are coping with the challenges of the disease and uncertainty about the future.

Take care of yourself.

Visit your doctor regularly. Try to eat well, exercise and get plenty of rest. Making sure that you are healthy can help you be a better caregiver.

Make legal and financial plans.

Putting legal and financial plans in place after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is important so that the person with the disease can participate. Having future plans in place can provide comfort to the entire family.

William Barber headline 50th Anniversary of Beyond Vietnam New York City, NY – More than halfway through President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, Civil Rights activists of the past and present headlined an event at The Riverside Church in the City of New York where they commemorated Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and drew sharp contrasts between his legacy and current U.S. policy. April 4, 2017 marked the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s controversial Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech, delivered at The Riverside Church exactly one year before his assassination. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at aged 39. In the speech, Dr. King denounced America’s triple sins of racism, poverty, and militarism.

This event at The Riverside Church included an evening of conversation with Michelle Alexander and Ruby Sales on yesterday, April 4, 2017.

“In Beyond Vietnam, Dr. King not only denounced a controversial war, he exposed to the country the underlying social evils of racism, poverty, and militarism which, if unaddressed, would continue to erode the soul of our nation,” said Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, Senior Minister of The Riverside Church in a released statement. “...The strident message of Beyond Vietnam is a reminder that people of faith and good conscience must step up and lead the way,” he said.

Many historians have cited Beyond Vietnam as a turning point in Dr. King’s ministry that lead to a rapid decline in his popularity and his assassination. The speech was written by Dr. Vincent Harding, a longtime confidant and advisor of Dr. King, who went on to be a professor at Iliff School of Theology and founded the Veterans of Hope Project.

Dr. Harding possessed a spiritual and courageous insightfulness,” said the Rev. Dr. Thomas Wolfe, President, Iliff School of Theology. “He saw himself as a servant of the civil rights movement. Despite the resistance to connecting the movement to the war, he drafted the speech because it reflected the heart of Dr. King’s message and all that was at stake for the soul of America. The event commemorating Beyond Vietnam featured Michelle Alexander and Ruby Sales in conversation in the Nave of The Riverside Church where King delivered the sermon and was co-hosted by Iliff School of Theology, Veterans of Hope, and Union Theological Seminary. Alexander, visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary, is author of The New Jim Crow, which examines the continued legacy of discrimination and injustice that Dr. King confronted.

Ruby Sales is a Civil Rights icon who worked in the Student Nonviolenct Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and went on to found The SpiritHouse Project.

These event kicked off a yearlong Beyond the Dream: Living King’s Legacy initiative by The Riverside Church, spanning the 50th anniversaries of Beyond Vietnam and Dr. King’s assassination.

ave you ever compared yourself to someone else? If you have, you’re not alone. It’s natural for us to want to know where we rank or how we stack up. Unfortunately, when you compare yourself to others one of two things usually occurs: either you regard the other person as being better than you and you feel discouraged (sometimes motivated), or you regard yourself as being better than the other person, and you become puffed up (sometimes egotistical). Neither of which supports your spiritual growth. Pointless comparisons do little more than help you take your eye off the prize...being all that God created YOU to be.

“Who am I that you are mindful of me, that you hear me when I call” (Psalm 8 - NRSV).

Here the psalmist sings about the majesty of how we are made and how important we are to God. He points us back to the origins of the divine potential that has been placed within each one of us. Though there may be an avalanche of evidence in the midst of our lineage, culture, neighborhood, or family, the psalmist’s words give credence to the notion that we have been set apart for a dynamic purpose. Like the prodigal son, it takes courage, conviction, and faith to come to yourself and be what God called you to be.

STATE HOMELESS PREVENTION FUNDS AVAILABLE FOR CHICAGO RESIDENTS The State Homeless Prevention Fund, a fund of approximately $1 million, has been made available through June 30 to Chicago residents at risk of losing their homes.

Funds up to $1,500 may be available to any individual or household experiencing a temporary economic crisis and can be received once in a twenty-four month period.

The funds can be used for rent, security deposits, mortgages, or utilities.

To be eligible for assistance, people must be residents within Chicago’s city limits and must be in imminent danger of eviction, foreclosure, or homelessness,

AKILAH TOWNSEND HIGHLIGHTS GROUNDBREAKING STEM PANEL: ‘GENIUS HAS NO GENDER’

Environmental scientist Akilah Townsend, a 2010 graduate of the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago, is one of the five powerful women executives participating in the first-ever “Girl Power” panel discussion on science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, sponsored by the city’s only allgirl public school.

Townsend, a 2010 graduate of YWLCS, is currently a scientist at Environmental Design International, Inc. The Chicago native will share her story of how she broke through several glass ceilings to excel in her field, and why other young girls should pursue careers in STEM fields.

The Ninth Annual YWLCS “Girl Power” Luncheon and fundraiser will take place on Thursday, April 6 at the Drake Hotel, located at 140 E. Walton Place in Chicago. The event’s first-ever panel format will offer YWLCS students and an audience of business professionals the opportunity to hear the successful women executives describe how they have emerged as leaders in their mostly male-dominated industries.

School officials hope to raise $650,000 from the luncheon’s proceeds. The cost is $16,000 to educate each student per year, and while there is funding from Chicago Public Schools, there is a $4,000 gap per girl that must be raised from private contributions.

Fill a Park Prescription The second annual Park Prescription Day will be filled with activities that showcase the physical, mental, and psychological health benefits of time in nature.
