HEALTH Mercy Hospital’s New Infusion Center Designed To Make Chemotherapy Easier on Patients CHICAGO, IL - Mercy Hospital & Medical Center’s has a new infusion center which is designed to make chemotherapy treatments as easy and convenient as possible for cancer patients. The 1,600 square foot infusion center, which opened June 6, 2017, has eight chairs and serves between 12 and 20 patients per day. The $480,000 cost was funded in part by the Mercy Dinner Dance Gala, Mercy’s largest fundraiser.

Preckwinkle, Health Experts Address the Health and Economic Benefits of the Penny-Per-Ounce Tax

With the controversy surrounding the Sweetened Beverage Tax, which took effect on Aug. 2, Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle along with leading health care providers held a press conference to address the health and economic benefits of the penny-per-ounce tax.

The Sweetened Beverage Tax goes beyond sugar and sweetened drinks like soda pop. But the new tax applies to bottled and canned beverages, diet soda, ready-todrink sweetened coffees and teas and sports and energy drinks.

Elissa Bassler, executive director for the Illinois Public Health Institute acknowledged that new taxes are never popular, but combating national healthcare epidemics are vital.

Health-focused groups, such as the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association are hoping the beverage tax curves the national epidemic of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Julie Mirostaw, senior director of Government Relations Director for the American Heart Association, said recent data proves that “children who drink one sugar beverage per day as opposed to not having any will increase their risk of diabetes by close to 60 percent.”

“This is not a trivial matter when obesity related diseases cost the US Health Care system $190 billion annually,” Bassler said. “Addressing an issue that drives 21 percent of medical spending is critical. The Sweetened Beverage Tax will reduce the burden of these chronic

illnesses and the related health care cost, which is swallowed by taxpayers via the Cook County Healthcare system.”

The Sweetened Beverage Tax was approved by Illinois Cook County commissioners on Nov. 10, 2016.

Frank Shuftan, a spokesman for Preckwinkle, said the county lost $20 million in taxes in July of 2017, but hopes to collect $67.5 million of tax revenue this year and $200.6 million in 2018. In the absence off the $20 million revenue, county layoffs were enforced.

Retail companies like the Illinois Retail Merchants Association (IRMA) sued Cook County in June of 2017, alleging the Sweetened Beverage Tax as “unconstitutional.” After the judge dismissed the lawsuit, the merchant association requested an appeal to hold the tax.

Rob Karr, who is the president and CEO of IRMA, said the Sweetened Beverage Tax is a “very poor, economic tax policy because it shifts sales out of the county and into other areas and deprives people of their jobs and benefits.”

During the Sept. 12th press conference, Preckwinkle said the main goal of the tax is to limit the bad debt in the health and hospital system and to decrease the consumption of sweetened beverages among consumers, particularly young people.

“Whether you drink sweet beverages or not, you’re already paying for the health care costs for those who do through taxes you pay now,” Bassler said. “We will remain vigilant in our policies that can improve health and wellbeing of our communities, families and children.”

President Obama announced in a video and e-mail the first set of Obama Foundation initiatives to inspire and empower young people to change their world. More than a building or a museum, the Foundation will be a living, working center for citizenship -- continuously developing as we learn from leaders across the country and the globe.

The Foundation has announced several initiatives to empower and equip civic innovators and young people with the skills and tools needed to change their communities: The Obama Foundation Summit, Obama Foundation Fellowship, Obama Foundation Training Days, and the integration of the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance into the Obama Foundation later this year.

“The initiatives announced reflect the input from those conversations. From leaders who are already making an impact, to people who are interested in becoming more involved, but don’t know where to start, our goal is to make our programs accessible to anyone, anywhere, with any background or level of experience. This is only the beginning — our programs will grow as we continue to listen and learn,” said David Simas, Chief Executive Officer at the Obama Foundation.

CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF 2017 RAHM’S READERS SUMMER LEARNING CHALLENGE

Chicago Public Library (CPL) and over 800 kids and families from around Chicago celebrated the completion of this year’s super hero themed Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge with a free Family Day at the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI).

Rahm’s Readers challenges Chicago children to read 20 minutes a day and participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) activities throughout the summer. To celebrate the completion of the program, CPL and the City of Chicago partnered with MSI to welcome children and their families to participate in hands-on experiments and art projects, and to learn more about super science by exploring the museum.

“Congratulations to all of the children who answered the call to read, discover and participate in STEAM activities throughout the summer,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “The students who participated in Rahm’s Readers did not take the summer off, and will start the school year off in a better position because of it.”

Rahm’s Readers is designed to help prevent the “summer slide,” where children can lose up to three months of education if they do not remain engaged during summer months. According to recent analysis by Chapin Hall, children participating in the Rahm’s Readers Summer Learning Challenge demonstrated on average 15 percent greater reading gains and 20 percent great math gains over and above their peers who did not participate in the program.

Rahm’s Readers 2017 had a super hero theme, featuring real-life heroes from Chicago Police and Fire Departments at several of the 19 community book giveaway events, courtesy of Bernie’s Book Bank through support from William Blair.

As national celebrities including the likes of Beyonce, Blake Shelton, Barbra Streisand and Oprah Winfrey came together last week for a one-hour telethon to benefit the victims of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, Dr. Willie Wilson, a humanitarian from the South Suburbs of Chicago, stepped up to join the cause.

Pledging $100,000 of his own money, Wilson said, he and a group of local pastors will travel to Texas to help storm victims in Houston.

On Aug. 25, Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm, landed in southeast Texas, dropping recordshattering rain resulting in extensive floods. Estimated damages for the U.S. have topped off at $75 billion, while CNN is reporting more than a million people have been displaced.

During a press conference last week, Wilson was flanked by a group of local Chicago pastors who plan to help him raise the funds. The pastors have set a goal of raising between $50,000 and $100,000. Pastors plan to raise the funds over the next six weeks via church collections.

Wilson on his trip to Houston and has already received a special church collection for the victims.

Pastors in Houston will identify the families without homes or food, Wilson said. “Then they will send the victim’s contact information to us and we will pass out cash money to families,” he stated.

Pastor Dr. Robert Patterson of Spirit of Truth Baptist Church and president of the Baptist Pastors Conference said, he’s asked his conference and local pastors to raise additional funds by Oct. 28th for Wilson’s cause.

“This is what we do as Christians, citizens and clergymen to help the least of these,” Patterson said.

“We must not forget that whatever God does, he does it for our good. Sometimes he does it to let us know that we must have a heart for the people.”

Wilson will personally give the flood victims the money during a press conference on Oct. 29th at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church, located on 4200 Lockwood Dr., in Houston, Texas, headed by Rev. Dr. Stan Hilliard.

“We’re getting to the root of the whole situation,” Wilson said. “We realize that there are other organizations in Houston, but some of these things take common sense. You don’t have to require paper work to know that a family is hungry,” Wilson said.

4 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR HAPPINESS It is easy to focus on things that you don’t like. However, if you want to experience extreme happiness, then it’s best to focus on positive things that happen. Here are a few tips to help you focus on the good things in your life.

Tip #1: Create a Gratitude Jar First, find a jar. Leave the jar clear or decorate it if you choose to. Get three pieces of paper and write one thing on each piece of paper that you are grateful for today. Repeat this every day until the jar is full. Review the notes periodically (especially when you need a quick pickme-up) to remind yourself of what is good in your life.

Tip #2: Send Thank-you Notes While there are multiple factors that contribute to your happiness, research has shown that you can choose to be happy by fostering such positive emotions as empathy and gratitude. One way to increase your happiness is to show appreciation toward other people. Try writing thank-you notes. It’s a great way of letting people know that they matter to you. It is also a great way to start the process of reciprocity.

Tip #3: Notice Other People’s Happiness Another way of increasing your own happiness is to observe happiness in others. Research has shown that the best way for us to predict how much we will enjoy an experience is to see how much other people enjoyed it. When you notice other people’s happiness, you should join in and be happy too.

Tip #4: Eliminate Toxic People There is no good reason to put up with people saying or doing things that are unkind to you. You should avoid people who are mean or negative. If they make you unhappy you should eliminate them from your life.

(BPT) - For Christine Wilkins, now 16, freshman year of high school was an ordeal. The same students who bullied her in middle school were at her new high school. Just approaching the school entry filled her with angst. One day, instead of going in, she turned around and went home.

“The idea of walking through those gates gave me so much anxiety,” she says.

Christine hated school. Unable to focus or dedicate herself to her schoolwork, she made C’s, D’s and F’s.

Eventually, Christine stopped going to school and dropped out.

Tackling the dropout issue There are many reasons students drop out of high school. Poverty, pregnancy, homelessness, bullying or just losing interest are some of the many issues that cause students to skip a day of class, a week and eventually drop out altogether.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, missing just three weeks of school is enough to threaten a student’s chance to graduate.

What can be done to help these students?

As each person is a complex individual, there is no single solution that can reach the multitude of different students.

This is why Learn4Life, a nonprofit dropout recovery program, takes a dynamic approach to reengage students.

The average student who enrolls in Learn4Life has been out of school for 11.4 weeks. Through different methods, such as personalized learning, mentoring and job skills training, the program has been highly successful in reengaging dropouts and keeping them in school.

These are the five effective ways they reach out to these students.

1. Dealing with issues outside of the classroom.

Whether it’s counseling to help students come to terms with issues they’re facing or a mentoring program that builds confidence, helping students deal with nonacademic issues is a way to give them the stability they need to succeed.

2. Meeting students where they are. Not every student is at the same emotional, academic or mental level as their peers. Through one-on-one attention, personalized learning and academic planning, students can get help where they most need it. This personalized approach is designed to find a solution that’s best for the individual.

3. Removing obstacles to learning. Sometimes it’s something as simple as not having proper transportation or childcare that prevents a student from returning to

complete their education. Giving students flexible schedules, help with transportation and access to teachers or mentors at different hours of the day can make a big difference in their ability to learn.

4. Making them feel safe. It’s an unfortunate fact that schools are not always the safe environment they ought to be. Creating a respectful and safe place to learn is essential for removing social anxieties and fears that can hinder learning.

5. Helping them see a future. Through job skills training programs, students can prepare for a future beyond a diploma. As a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) partner, Learn4Life offers courses in work-readiness skills, career exploration, writing cover letters and resumes, completing applications and interviewing.

The effectiveness of Learn4Life’s approach can be seen in the fact that when students enroll, only 15 percent of them come to school regularly, but as the year goes on, that number jumps to 86 percent.

Concluding Christine’s story After six months out of school, counselors at Christine’s old high school pointed her to a Learn4Life program at Desert Sands Charter School.

She enrolled and by participating in an internship with Pacific Gateway, part of the YouthBuild WIOA program at Desert Sands, Christine gained experience in customer service and Microsoft applications.

Currently, Christine attends school and is getting all A’s and B’s in her school work, and has a full-time internship.

At the end of the internship, she will receive certificates in customer service and Microsoft Office.

“I’m dedicated because I’m getting knowledge and experience for a life outside of school,” Christine says.

1 Truth Hall Wins Festal Awards LOS ANGELES, -- Parker Street Productions’ awardwinning Writer/ Director, Jade Jenise Dixon, hit all the right marks with her feature film directorial debut, TRUTH HALL (2009). The film won several film festal awards, was in heavy rotation on the B.E.T., Centric and Bounce TV networks, made the “Best Sellers” list at Target and secured distribution through Image entertainment.

But, like so many other female directors, Jade was left spinning her wheels. And, because of lack of diversity in the Director’s chair in Hollywood, Jade had essentially given up. She got engaged and resolved to being content with a simpler life.

“My passion to direct, never left. I just didn’t know how to get my next film done or where my next job was going to come from,” says the Writer/Director. But when her engagement fell apart short of the alter, Jade started writing again.

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get into the ring again. The odds of a female filmmaker making a second feature film aren’t good. I was scared. But I had to push through it,” says Jade.

Now Jade has defied the odds and is poised to premiere her new Romantic Comedy, “Dog Park,” at the Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival on September 29, 2017 at 9:10PM. Jade notes that it’s a better time for female directors. She also recognizes that the industry still has a long way to go… but she’s happy to be back.

In 2017, 10 years after the iPhone was introduced, mobile technology has rapidly changed the way we interact with media. Children as young as 2 use tablets and phones— swiping, tapping and viewing to gain access to content.

For today’s youngest digital natives, digital tools are an integral part of their lives, used in fluid ways to explore their worlds. Technology is not SEPARATE but instead a PART of their lives, an important tool that helps them play, learn, socialize and engage.

Mobile interactive apps and games provide ample opportunities for children to move their bodies, learn, create digital masterpieces and explore everything and anything that captures their imagination. At the same time, in today’s 24/7 digital environment, children can use media to make impulsive choices, view material that is not age appropriate or communicate inappropriately.

The benefits are great but the risks must be mitigated.

Five ways to help your child become a Digital Citizen: 1. The most important thing is to model good behavior. This means think about your media use and what your children see you doing.

2. Find times when the whole family has no devices—dinner table, walks to school, hikes, sport

games. The most important thing is that they learn there are times that are screen free—and that it is essential to build these into our day.

3. Pick your battles. If you don’t want your teens to “unfriend” you or even worse create another page you won’t know about, don’t ask about every transgression and let a few things slide.

Try saying a few positive things each day about their media use.

4. Live where they live. Remember, it’s not just about social media…it’s also about what they’re watching, reading, and listening to. Common Sense Media is an amazing source for comprehensive information.

5. Look for teachable moments in the real world. You can use things that happen in real life to create stories that may resonate for teens. Bring them up in conversation. Often, kids’ ears will perk up when they hear these stories.

(BPT) - Fall and winter don’t just bring cooler temperatures and the holidays - the final seasons of the year also mean open enrollment for Medicare. For most seniors in the United States, the period between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7 is the only time they can switch or make changes to their Medicare insurance plan.

“As people age, their health care needs evolve,” says Dawn Maroney, chief growth and strategy officer for Alignment Healthcare. “When that happens, they may find the Medicare plan they first chose when they became eligible no longer meets all their needs. This open enrollment period is their yearly opportunity to re-evaluate whether to continue with their plan or switch to another, with changes becoming effective the first of the new year.”

Medicare basics

Most Americans are aware that Medicare is a government program designed to ensure people older than 65 have access to affordable health insurance.

The program can also cover people younger than 65 who have certain disabilities.

The Medicare program has four parts, according to Medicare.gov: A, B, C and D. * Medicare Part A helps pay for in-patient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility and hospice care. * Medicare Part B helps cover care by doctors or other health care providers, outpatient services, some medical equipment and some preventive services. * Medicare Part C (also known as Medicare Advantage) covers everything included in parts A and B, and usually includes Medicare prescription drug coverage as part of the plan. Medicare Advantage plans may include extra benefits and services for an extra cost.

Medicare-approved private insurance companies, such as Alignment Healthcare’s Alignment Health Plan, run Medicare Advantage plans. * Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications and is run by Medicare-approved private insurance companies.

Original Medicare versus Medicare Advantage Most people think of Medicare parts A and B as Original Medicare, in which the government pays directly for the health care services received.

People with Original Medicare can see any doctor and hospital

that accepts Medicare in the country, without prior approval from Medicare or their primary care physician. Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if they paid taxes while working; everyone pays a monthly premium for Part B, based on income. The standard premium for Part B in 2017 was $134 per month, which is deducted from the individual’s Social Security benefits.

Original Medicare pays for about 80 percent of the total costs of health care. The patient is responsible for the remaining 20 percent, which can mean high out-of-pocket costs in the event of a hospitalization or other events requiring significant medical attention. To offset the financial burden of that 20 percent, some people choose to purchase supplemental insurance, called Medigap.

Private insurance companies offer Medigap to cover things Medicare doesn’t, such as deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance - but, keep in mind, Medigap only supplements Original Medicare benefits.

Further, if you do not apply for Medigap in the first six months of becoming eligible, there’s no guarantee that an insurance company will sell you a Medigap policy.

With Medicare Advantage, government-approved private companies administer health plans that cover everything Original Medicare does, but can do so with different rules, costs and restrictions that can change every year. For example, a private Medicare plan may require your physician to request permission before performing a procedure in order to be paid by the plan. Medicare Advantage plans, however, usually cover extras that Original Medicare does not, like dental care, vision

services, hearing exams and gym memberships.

Most Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage (Medicare Part D), which is not included in Original Medicare, at no additional cost. If you elect to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you still have Medicare this means that you must still pay your monthly premiums for parts A and B, in addition to a monthly premium for Part C, if applicable. Many Medicare Advantage plans are available for no additional monthly premium.

Prescription drug coverage is not included in Original Medicare, and if you fail to sign up for Part D at the time you enroll, you could pay a penalty for adding it later. Most Medicare Advantage plans do cover prescription drugs.

“Medicare Advantage allows patients to receive the care they need to stay well and keeps their budgets in check with set costs and annual maximums,” Maroney says. “It’s an ideal solution for patients who need frequent care or who struggle to meet medical expenses.”

Considerations when choosing

When choosing between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, you should consider these questions: * How likely is it your health needs will change down the road? Since health changes as you age, chances are your treatment needs will, too. If you don’t enroll in the additional insurance and drug coverage when you first sign up for Original Medicare, you may pay a monthly penalty for enrolling later and may not be eligible for additional Medigap coverage. * Are you still working past age 65? If so, you will probably want to enroll in Part A, because there generally are no monthly premiums, and it may supplement your employer’s insurance plan. You might choose to delay enrolling in Part B, but it depends on your health coverage. Everyone has to pay a monthly premium for Part B. * Is it more important to you to have lower or no premiums or lower out-ofpocket costs? With Original Medicare, you may pay more out of pocket without
