SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The South Suburban College literary and art magazine The Scriblerian has won three major awards from the American Scholastic Press Association. Scoring 960 out of a possible 1000 points, judged on content coverage, organization, design, presentation, and creativity. The magazine received a First Place with Special Merit award, with the judges stating, “Your magazine shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, layout/graphics/ designers, staff members, contributors, and advisor.

Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association Uplifts Leadership in Maternal Health Care (Black PR Wire) Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association (BMBFA) presented its 8th Annual Seminar, “Uplifting Leadership in Maternal Care” on Friday, October 13, 2017. It was a full day conference that facilitated and promoted broader learning within the maternal and child health field while helping to achieve the organization’s goal to have national impact on the reduction of racial disparities in breastfeeding success for black families. BMBFA envisions positive cultural sentiments about breastfeeding, multi-generational breastfeeding support and encouragement within black families and neighborhoods. Three Emerging Chicago Artists Win $15,000 in Services CHICAGO – Leading law firm for innovators, Creative Genius Law (CGL) selected three emerging Chicago artists as recipients for their inaugural We’ll Work for Art program. Limited to artists whose work focuses on a positive portrayal of underrepresented communities, have less than 10 years of experience in their prospective industry and are focused on a primary career as a visual artist, submissions opened at the end of June and closed mid August. Each selected artist will receive legal services up to $5,000 each including business entity formation and counsel, contract review, drafting or negotiation, trademark counsel and registrations, copyright counsel and registrations, and outside general counsel services in exchange for one piece of art. This years’ selected artists are: VersAnnette Blackman-Bosia, Stephanie Graham and Colleen McCulla.
COMMUNITY FOCUS Baltimore, MD- According to a journalistic investigation by the news outlet Foreign Policy (FP) the FBI’s counterterroism division has identified a new threat-black identity extremists (BIE). The FBI’s assessment is that BIE’s “perception of police brutality against African Americans have spurred retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement”. In response to this report the interim NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson said in a released statement, “In a time when white supremacists are marching down city streets with loaded weapons and tiki torches- organizing rallies of terror around the country - it comes as a great shock that the FBI would decide to target black identity groups protesting police brutality and their right to exist free of harm as a threat. “Sadly, this report comes as no surprise from an organization that has a history of targeting black civil rights groups and leaders, including wiretapping Martin Luther King Jr. and others fighting for civil rights in the 1960s. “We do have a real threat in the United States and it’s the rise of right-wing

While President Barack Obama and Congresswoman Maxine Waters sent birthday greetings, Ambassador Andrew Young, Martin Luther King III and Dr. Martin L. King Jr’s sister, Dr. Christine King Farris were among celebrities and dignitaries on hand in Atlanta to acknowledge the 96th birthday of civil rights leader and former King confidant, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery. The historical evening was made most memorable when OWN’s “Greenleaf” star and singer Keith David; Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” star and vocalist, Cassandra “Cassi” Davis; and gospel superstar, Yolanda Adams, mesmerized the audience with a stellar musical tribute that encapsulated the life of the well-loved nonagenarian. The Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute (Lowery Institute) hosted the gala which also featured Lowery Institute Change Agents packing the stage to honor the Dr. Lowery with raised fists and taking a knee. Themed “Grounded in History: Soaring Towards The Future,” the Lowery Institute also awarded movie producer, Will Packer, attorney Angela Rye, and activist Rev. The Chicago Citizen and the Illinois Press Association (IPA) recently honored the life and legacy of the Citizen’s Former Publisher William Garth, Sr. at The DuSable Museum of African American History, located on 740 E. 56th Place. Darrell Garth thanked each elected official, the DuSable Museum representatives, and the Illinois Press Association and family members for paying their respect. “My father was a great person and would have been honored to have seen everyone here tonight,” Garth said. Mike Kramer, president at Law Bulletin Media, said it was a privilege to serve and learn from William Garth, who he says was one of the most honest and successful men he’s ever known. “He turned the Citizen into one of the most successful businesses in America,” Kramer said. “I mourned his passing because he was a wonderful man. Bill gave a voice to people who were silenced and a platform for those who could not reach out.” As a tribute to his business acumen, Garth became the first Black person to be elected President of the Illinois Press Association (IPA), the state’s largest newspaper association and the office trade organization for Illinois’ weekly daily newspapers. Garth is also the second Black person in the nation elected president of a statewide press association. He served on the Board of the Government Affairs Committee of the Illinois Press Association and as a board member for more than 15 years. As former chairman of the Chatham Business Association, Garth led the organization in creating opportunities, inroads and programs to benefit and
ensure the prosperity, economic strength and excellence of all businesses in the Chatham area and its surrounding communities. In 1995, Garth founded the Quentis Bernard Garth Foundation, the benevolent arm of the Chicago Citizen Newspaper, in memory of his youngest son Quentis B. Garth. The QBG Foundation provides scholarships to disenfranchised, inner city youths in the Chicagoland area. To date, the foundation has helped over 50 students and has disbursed over $1.5 million in scholarship awards. As a dedicated activist and leader in the business community, Garth maintained memberships and positions with several business organizations. He is the former president of the Midwest Region III of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), Region III Advertising Representative with the NNPA, Transition Team for IDOT-Dan Ryan Project, board member of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, a life-time member of the NAACP and a member of the Chatham Lions Club. Garth has also been the recipient of numerous local and national awards and honors; one of such honor bestowed upon him was to carry the torch in Chicago during the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. “He was a community leader and fostered and encouraged active government,” Kramer said. “He left a legacy that will continue to effect lives for many years.” During the evening festivities, the Illinois Press Association (IPA) donated $5,000 to the DuSable Museum of African American History and the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation in honor of William Garth.

Five Everyday Reasons You Need To Know Math (NAPSI)—Many people may shy away from the subject of math, but it is important to understand math as it plays an instrumental role in making good financial decisions. A new University of Phoenix® survey found that 28 percent of respondents reported they were not confident that their current math skills are strong enough to succeed in planning for retirement and 24 percent stated they are not confident in their skills to succeed in understanding tuition assistance and save or pay for college. Additionally, 35 percent are not confident that their math skills were solid enough to start a business. Fake Insurance Tax Form Scam Aims at Stealing Data from Tax Pros, Clients WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service recently alerted tax professionals and their clients to a fake insurance tax form scam that is being used to access annuity and life insurance accounts. Cybercriminals currently are combining several tactics to create a complex scheme through which both tax professionals and taxpayers have been victimized. There may be variations but here’s how one scam works: The cybercriminal, impersonating a legitimate cloudbased storage provider, entices a tax professional with a phishing email. The tax professional, thinking they are interacting with the legitimate cloudbased storage provider, provides their email credentials including username and password. With access to the tax professional’s account, the cybercriminal steals client email addresses. The cybercriminal then impersonates the tax professional and sends emails to their clients, attaching a fake IRS insurance form and requesting that the form be completed and returned. The cybercriminal receives replies by fax and/or by an email very similar to the tax professional’s email – using a different email service provider or a slight variation to the tax pro’s address. The subject line varies but may be “urgent information” or a similar request. The awkwardly worded text of the email states: Dear Life Insurance Policy Owner, Kindly fill the form attached for your Life insurance or Annuity contract details and fax back to us for processing in order to avoid multiple (sic) tax bill (sic). The cybercriminal, using data from the completed form, impersonates the client and contacts the individual’s insurance company. The cybercriminal then attempts to obtain a loan or make a withdrawal from those accounts. The IRS reminds tax professionals to be aware of phishing emails, free offers and other common tricks by scammers. Those tax professionals who have data breaches should contact the IRS immediately through their Stakeholder Liaison. See Data Theft Information for Tax Professionals. Individuals who receive the insurance tax form scam email should forward it to phishing@irs.gov and then delete it. Individuals who completed and returned the fake tax form should contact their insurance carrier for assistance.

New Book Discusses How Christians Can Avoid Going Into Debt NASHVILLE, Tenn.,-- “God has given each of us a portion of Christ’s anointing, by which we are to live and succeed in life,” says Pastor Terrance Levise Turner. The prophet writer of Isaiah shared that just as the rain and snow fulfill the purpose for which each is sent, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation. If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges. Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative self-talk? Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your selftalk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you? Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ? Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson.
