EDUCATION Back 2 School Illinois Contest Launched

CHICAGO - Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), a Chicagobased nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low-income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom, recently announced the launch of this year’s “Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School” contest.

Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies, including their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year.

Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated.

The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th.

HEALTH BLACK WOMEN’S ROUNDTABLE (Washington, DC) - The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (NCBCP) Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR), in collaboration with the AARP, recently announced the launch of its HealthCARE is a HumanRight #NotAPrivilege Campaign (BWR HealthCARE Campaign). The campaign is a call to action that is focused on protecting Medicare, Medicaid and quality affordable health care for seniors, children, young adults and the poor; and protecting Social Security for seniors, dependents and the disabled.The BWR HealthCARE Campaign is also supported by the Moriah Fund. Chatham Starts the Conversation is a neighborhood-wide initiative that has served more than 200 seniors this year-with numbers growing every week.

The initiative has partnered with several organizations, which includes the city of Chicago’s Department on Aging, the Chicago Public Library, churches and senior residences to help guide and support seniors through the last stages of their lives.

The initiative also helps seniors document their end life goals.

“There are so many barriers that separate African Americans from making well-considered and well informed health care decisions at the end of life,” said Randi Belisomo, President of Life Matters Media.

“It’s not fair and it’s not just, and our program walks people through this process and provides them with the information they need to know to make a decision that supports their values and goals.”

According to the Journal of Palliative Medicine, “African Americans are less satisfied than whites with the quality of their end of life care.” To add, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, reported that African Americans are also less likely to receive adequate pain assessment and more likely to report poor communication with doctors about their choices.”

The California Healthcare Foundation also reported in a healthcare study that “90 percent of Americans say having conversations about end of life wishes is vital, but only fewer than 30 percent have done so.”

Conversation initiative has been working in community settings because these types of conservations aren’t happening at doctors’ offices and with health care providers. She continued to say that the conversations should be happening, but until it does, the organization will help people be empowered to communicate their choices with their loved ones.

“People feel isolated and alone and they don’t know how to do this well,” she said. “Physicians are starting these conversations and so we help [seniors] have conversations that they may have thought about for a long time and this reduces their isolation and fear.”

Belisomo explained that for the first six months of 2017, Chatham Starts the Conversation organization didn’t expect much, but ended up finding out that most seniors were continuing to eagerly come into their offices to communicate because they have been thinking about their choices and goals for a long time.

She said they just didn’t feel like they had anyone to speak to about their respective issues and they didn’t know how to approach it as well.

“We think that this is the most important gift that you can give your loved ones, which is by telling them how to care for you,” Belisomo added. “This is really how to love you at the most vulnerable time of your life when you’re old, sick, unable to communicate, and even when you’re dying you still want someone to honor your wishes. So, we have to tell them ahead of time.”

LAW & POLITICS ACLU REPRESENTS MAN IN CASE WHERE POLICE OBTAINED MONTHS’ WORTH OF CELL PHONE LOCATION INFORMATION WITHOUT A WARRANT WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court recently agreed to hear a landmark case on whether the government needs a warrant to access a person’s cell phone location history. The American Civil Liberties Union is co-counsel in the case, Carpenter v. United States. In 2011, without getting a probable cause warrant, the government obtained from cell service companies months’ worth of phone location records for suspects in a robbery investigation in Detroit. For one suspect, Timothy Carpenter, the records covered 127 days and revealed 12,898 separate points of location data.

After Carpenter was convicted at trial, based in part on the cell phone location evidence, he appealed to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 2–1 that no warrant is required under the Fourth Amendment.

COMMUNITY FOCUS Free Poetry and Writers’ Workshop for Students

CHICAGO - The Woodlawn Community Summit recently announced its Poetry and Writers’ Workshop for students grades 6-12 with special guest Tyehimba Jess, 2017 Pulitzer Poetry Prize Winner and University of Chicago alumnus, on Saturday June 17, 2017 from 8:30am12:00pm at the University of Chicago, Ida Noyes Hall located at 1212 East 59th Street.

The Poetry and Writers’ Workshop is designed for youth with an interest in writing, poetry and the literary arts. Youth will hear Jess read from his 2017 Pulitzer Prize winning book “Olio” and participate in an engaging and open conversation. Following the reading, youth will participate in a one hour, hands on, writers’ workshop entitled “Phone Book” and facilitated by Asadah Kirkland of the Soulful Chicago Book Fair.

“The Woodlawn Community Summit Advisory Committee has worked tirelessly to deliver an insightful youth program that was identified by residents at the 8th Annual Woodlawn Summit this past March. Collins urges governor to sign automatic voter registration into law SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Jacqueline Collins joined representatives of Common Cause Illinois and numerous other activists, advocates and fellow Springfield lawmakers at a press conference in Chicago on June 6, 2017, to commemorate the passage of automatic voter registration in Senate Bill 1933, which passed the General Assembly toward the end of the May legislative session.

Collins said the next step is encouraging people to vote.

“This is indicative of what we can accomplish when we work across the partisan divide,” said Collins, D-Chicago.

“I’ve been challenging potential voters to want to move beyond that apathy and the hopelessness, to understand that the vote is their voice, and voting does matter.”

Senate Bill 1933 passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of the General Assembly. It awaits the governor’s signature to become law.

Illinois AFL-CIO Endorses JB Pritzker For Governor Chicago, IL — JB Pritzker was endorsed on June 6, 2017, by the Illinois AFL-CIO, which represents nearly 900,000 union members across the state. The endorsement gives “a powerful force behind his bid to challenge Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in 2018,” according to a JB Pritzker press release.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the unusually early move by the Illinois AFL-CIO, coming nine months before the March primary election, is a significant political boost for Pritzker, a billionaire entrepreneur and investor who has vowed to self-fund his campaign and spend to elect Democratic House and Senate candidates. The union backing gives him much-needed boots on the ground.

From WLS-TV: University of Illinois Labor Professor Bob Bruno says a labor endorsement can also make a big difference in a close primary and general election race.

“Organized labor can build a coalition, it can aggregate votes and it can do education,” said Bruno.

Duckworth Speaks At Rally Against Cuts to Medicaid

(WASHINGTON, D.C) - U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) joined Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Ron Wyden (DOR), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) at a rally on June 6, 2017, with disability rights advocates against a $1.4 trillion in cuts to Medicaid which President Donald Trump has proposed in his healthcare repeal bill and budget blueprint. Senator Duckworth warned that the cuts would hurt students across the country who benefit from Medicaid-funded counselors and school nurses and jeopardize the healthcare coverage of both the millions of Veterans who rely on Medicaid and the two-thirds of nursing home residents whose bills are paid by Medicaid.

“This President’s proposed cuts to Medicaid would fall hardest on the people who need it most and that’s unacceptable,” Duckworth said. “It is not only a broken promise to our seniors and those with disabilities who depend on Medicaid to live with dignity and participate as equal members of our society, but also to our veterans, who deserve better than having their critical health coverage stripped away from them.”

There is a 3 year gap between Black and White students. Many people love to believe it’s due to income fatherlessness, educational attainment of the parent and lack of parental involvement. I believe a major reason for the gap is we continue to close schools for the summer as if we are an agrarian economy. Very few Black youth will be farming this summer. If you multiply 3 months by 12 years you will see the 3 year gap. There is nothing wrong with Black youth if their schools remained open during the summer and/or their parents kept them academically engaged.

Middle-income parents who value education enroll their children in some type of academic experience during the summer. They also visit libraries, museums, zoos and colleges.

Other parents allow their children to sleep longer, play more video games, watch more television and play basketball until they can’t see the hoop. These students will have to review the same work they had mastered in May in September.

Black parents cannot allow their child to lose 3 months every year. Black parents cannot say they cannot afford the library. It’s free!

Most museums have discounted days.

A male friend of mine shared his experience with me when he took his family to the museum. He wondered why so many people were staring at him. His wife and children had to tell him he was the only Black man in the building! I am appealing to every father to take his children this summer to the library, museum, and the zoo. I a appealing to every mother if he won’t, you will.

We need every parent to make sure their child reads at least one book per week and to write a book report. I am reminded of the formula Sonya Carson used to develop Ben Carson to become the best pediatric neurosurgeon. This low-income single parent, with a third grade education, had enough sense to tell her sons to turn off the television, read a book and write a report that her sister would grade!

I have a theory that I can go into your house and within 5 minutes tell you the type of student who lives there and predict their future.

I believe that engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants etc. need

different items in their house than ballplayers, rappers, and criminals.

I am very concerned when I visit a house that has more cds and downloads than books. My company African American Images has designed a special collection of books for boys.

Research shows one of the major reasons boys dislike reading is because of the content. The set is titled Best Books for Boys. We also have one for girls, parents and teachers. Enjoy your summer. Let’s close the gap. I look forward to your child’s teacher asking your child what did you do for the summer? Organizations Awarded $1 Million in Grants to Support Chicago Entrepreneurs Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago (“WBC”) recently announced the grantees of the Blackstone Inclusive Entrepreneurship Challenge (“Blackstone Challenge”). For the first year of the Blackstone Challenge, eight organizations were awarded grants totaling $1 million to connect diverse Chicago entrepreneurs, particularly people of color, immigrants, women and veterans, with resources to help scale and grow their businesses. These grants are part of a $3 million commitment made in January 2017.

“By investing in organizations that support diverse entrepreneurs we create economic opportunities that reach all parts of Chicago,” Mayor Emanuel said. “We are incredibly grateful that Chicago was chosen as the pilot city for the Blackstone Challenge program, and look forward to seeing it generate jobs and growth as we build on its success.”

Nearly 50 organizations submitted proposals, of which the top eight were selected to receive grants. Starting next month, the grantees will focus on deploying strategies to recruit, engage and support diverse entrepreneurs throughout the Chicagoland area. At the end of the first year, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and World Business Chicago will announce the process to distribute an additional $2 million in grant funding.

“We look forward to seeing what our eight awardees will accomplish in the coming year,” Jon Gray, Global Head of Real Estate at Blackstone said. “We believe it’s critical that any entrepreneur – regardless of where they live – has access to the resources they need to scale and grow their businesses. Our hope is that this program will serve as a model for other communities across the country to support a diverse group of entrepreneurs.”

Through this initiative, the Blackstone Charitable Foundation, in partnership with ChicagoNEXT of World Business Chicago, continues its mission of investing in entrepreneurship to support new ventures and job creation.

“Chicago’s greatest strength is our diversity, so we need to be

targeted and intentional about supporting entrepreneurs from marginalized communities,” Jimmy Odom, Director of Inclusive Entrepreneurship for ChicagoNEXT said. “This Blackstone Challenge cohort will work together to make sure a diverse representation of entrepreneurs get the resources they need.”

The Blackstone Challenge will be the initial focus of the ChicagoNEXT Inclusive Entrepreneurship Leadership Council, whose thirteen members, composed of civic and business leaders, were announced last month. The council will offer strategic direction for the program, mentor and advise the grantees, and use their convening power to support regional program events.

“The selected organizations have proposed a wide range of strategies to support inclusive entrepreneurship,” Amy Stursberg, Executive Director of the Blackstone Charitable Foundation said. “The Foundation is proud to serve as a catalytic funder to support these exceptional organizations as they test and scale their programs, and contribute to Chicago’s thriving entrepreneurship landscape.”

The following organizations were selected because they offered new, innovative projects to expand their work driving inclusive entrepreneurship: Bethel New Life, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bethel New Life, an organization focused on bringing individuals and families out of poverty, to launch a Business and Technology Program featuring a training course, workshop series and an expanded tech lab, in Chicago’s West Side.

BLUE1647, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow BLUE1647, an entrepreneurship and technology center, to double BLUEINCUBATE, an accelerator offering shared workspace and membership to start-ups, tech-enabled businesses and individuals, allowing these entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, integrate technology into their strategy, and network with stakeholders and investors.

Bunker Labs, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow Bunker Labs, an organization that helps military veterans launch

and grow businesses through educational programs and networking, to create Guided Virtual Cohorts, a remote, high touch version of the successful Bunker in a Box platform, and the CEOcircle Program, a program which provides additional resources to later stage founders.

1871, $150,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support 1871, a hub for digital startup entrepreneurship in Chicago, to create the 1871 Community Curriculum Project that will digitalize content from its workshops and events to make it accessible to a wider audience of entrepreneurs.

Future Founders, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support Future Founders, an organization focused on inspiring the next generation of young entrepreneurs, in the creation of Future Founders Chicago Cohort, a program that fosters the development of millennial businesses from communities of color, women, veterans and immigrants with 1-on-1 biweekly mentoring, monthly cohort workshops, and an intensive two-day summit. i.c.stars, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow i.c.stars, an organization that provides technology-based training for low-income adults, to expand Enterprise Next, a three month lean startup training and incubation program, and to add a pitch night and Idea Hacks.

UI Labs, $100,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will support UI Labs, an innovation accelerator that brings together partners from “university + industry,” to create the City Digital: Inclusive Entrepreneurship for Collaborative Innovation, a partnership between City Digital and Colony 5 to help community based startups tackle complex urban challenges and explore ideas on smart city developments through entrepreneurship.

Women’s Business Development Center, $125,000 – Blackstone Challenge funding will allow the Women’s Business Development Center, which aims to strengthen women’s entrepreneurship and impact on the economy, to expand ScaleUp, a program which provides entrepreneurial education, one -on-one support and mentoring, to two new neighborhoods including West Rogers Park and South Chicago.

A BOUT WITH DOUBT, II When God guides us, we have within us everything that we need to be laser focused and take radical action in the right direction.

However, every time we doubt, we create an alternate path that leads us away from the direction of God’s guidance. Double-mindedness makes us unstable in every way. When we doubt, when we hesitate, if we are lucky, we are only second-guessing ourselves. Yet somehow, I get the sense that sometimes when we doubt, we are not only second-guessing ourselves, we are also second-guessing God. There is something to be said for not only not having enough faith and conviction in ourselves, but also not having enough faith and conviction in God. This is why one great thinker suggested that our faith in God is measured by our confidence in self.

Our doubt means there is some uncertainty or confusion around what we want to do and whether we are able to do it. Of ourselves, we may not be able to do it but in Christ, it is a whole different ball game. When we doubt, we are being of two minds. James 1:2 challenges us to count it nothing but joy when we face the difficulty that comes with doubt. Through this scripture we may consider that when we are going through the difficulty of doubt, we must keep going and discover the ability to consider the doubt and reframe it with faith. The writer goes on to say, “…because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance;” Therefore, if we can consider it joy, it will be a springboard to our faith. When our faith is enriched, it helps to develop more endurance and joy.

When you are wrestling with a bear, you do not stop when you are tired, you only stop when the bear gets tired. It is necessary to have some endurance, tenacity, determination, and perseverance because you are going to face some trials. You may question whether you can make it through but the only question is whether or not you will face those trials with joy because joy puts you in a certain mindset, on a certain path, and gives you a certain perspective through which to see your world.

Alternatively, when you cannot face it with joy and you face it from within the context of the struggle, we find ourselves having a little more to be in doubt about.

UNCF SALUTES CHICAGO FOOTBALL CLASSIC CO-FOUNDERS CHICAGO – The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) will salute the co-founders of the Chicago Football Classic – Larry Huggins and brothers Timothy J. Rand and Everett Rand – at the 2017 UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala – Chicago. The event will be held Saturday, June 17, at 6 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 151 E. Wacker Drive.

“The Chicago Football Classic is an institution in our community and, now, in its 20th year, we want to celebrate the co-founders, each of whom is accomplished in his own right, as our “A Mind Is…” Gala Community Award honorees,” said Lisa Rollins, UNCF regional director, Workplace Initiatives.

Larry Huggins is president and CEO of Riteway-Huggins Construction Services. Timothy J. Rand is president and CEO of MAC One, a restaurant group. Everett Rand is owner of Midway Wholesalers, a liquor distributor.

Together, they founded the weekend slate of cultural, educational and sporting activities that has become known as the Chicago Football Classic, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

The mission of the Classic event is to inspire African Americans to consider academic and cultural opportunities offered by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The weekend includes scholarship opportunities, a college fair and empowerment summit in addition to the head-to-head competition between two HBCU football teams and the everpopular Battle of the Bands.

Each year the UNCF “A Mind Is…” Gala brings together corporate, civic, nonprofit and community leaders and influencers to raise funds for deserving disadvantaged students to attend college.

The program includes recognition of extraordinary individuals and organizations that support the work of UNCF. This year, Commonwealth Edison will receive the Corporate Award.

Shayne Evans, founding managing partner, The Academy Group, and D’Rita Robinson, civic leader and entrepreneur, also will receive honors.

Award-winning sculptor, painter, and multi-media artist Debra Hand will create the honorees’ awards.

Internationally-renowned drummer, percussionist, singer, songwriter, author, humanitarian and actress Sheila E will provide the evening’s entertainment.
