Top Box Foods, a non-profit community-based organization and a year-round resource, is committed to increasing access to healthy and affordable food in food deserts with the help of neighborhood partners, volunteers and corporate sponsors. Brian Foster, Director of Community Outreach and Marketing at Top Box Foods, said five years ago Illinois Democratic Candidate for Governor Chris Kennedy and his wife, Sheila Kennedy, felt that there was a bigger need in urban communities and decided to create Top Box Foods. “They knew in some areas there was a group of people who might not qualify for food pantries or people who couldn’t afford high food prices from Jewels or Whole Foods,” Foster said. “So, there was a gap that they wanted to fill.” To fill that food gap, Top Box Foods began bringing fresh, affordable foods in food-desert communities in 2012 where people now can order online and pick up their food at a pickup site. “People can pay ahead of time or at the site and we take Link and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),” Foster said. “Sixty-five to 70 percent of our customer base uses these options and

He continued to explain that Top Box Foods offers three boxes including a fruit box, garden box and a vegetable box where between 14 to 17 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables are stored. “We all know if you go to a store in Englewood, you can find Flamin Hots or Doritos pretty easily,” Foster said. “But to find an apple, orange or fresh grapes that’s good to eat, then it may take a little more research. So we’re trying to bring more fresh products within these communities.” Foster said Top Box Foods offers food popups to senior centers and low-income housing to help people eat healthier, feel better physically, lower their cholesterol and essentially, replace fast food options with cooking healthy meals at home. “In food-desert communities, there is a lack of fresh and affordable food that spills over into health modalities,” Foster said. “So, we want to make sure that people not only take better care of themselves, but take better care of their families and eat healthier.” For Christmas, Top Box Foods will have a holiday box available, which will include ham, cornbread, macroroni and cheese, mash potatoes and more. Gender & Justice: The Criminalization of Youth in Cook County

Gender & Justice is a groundbreaking & timely symposium that will address advocacy and community solutions centering the experiences of justice-involved girls & LGBTQI/GNC youth. It will be the first of its kind in Chicago. The Keynote Speaker is Shakira Washington, Vice President at The National Crittenton Foundation (TNCF). Shakira has spent the past twenty years as a community organizer, program developer, and researcher to address social, economic, and political inequities faced by marginalized communities. The National Crittenton Foundation, reports that the juvenile justice system is incapable of meeting the needs of girls who are especially vulnerable to victimization. • The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention reports that girls are the fastest growing population in the juvenile justice system. • According to the report Gender Injustice: System Level Juvenile Justice Reform For Girls, Girls of color and girls who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and gender non-conforming are found to be disproportionately involved in the juvenile justice system (LGBTQ/ GNC).

Illinois Legislators Take Action to Protect Voters

Illinois voters may get the protection they deserve, thanks to the leadership of Senator Kwame Raoul and Senator Cunningham in partnership with other state legislators and Indivisible Chicago who recently proposed legislation to secure the use of private voter information. The Illinois State Board of Elections currently subscribes to two national voter database systems designed to help election authorities identify voters who may be registered in more than one state. The national databases are Crosscheck and the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC). The legislation unveiled recently, SB 2273, will remove Illinois from the Crosscheck system but will allow the state to remain in ERIC, which is reportedly regarded widely by state and local election authorities as the superior system. Crosscheck is a program created and operated by Kansas election officials. It collects voter registration information from participating states and “crosschecks” the data to find duplicate registrations. Recent research by Indivisible Chicago has exposed numerous security flaws and raised questions about how the data is used.

Assistant Majority Leader Greg Harris Endorses JB Pritzker at LGBTQ Meet and Greet

Assistant Majority Leader Greg Harris recently announced his endorsement of JB Pritzker for governor at an LGBTQ event at Sidetrack on the north side of Chicago. Greg Harris has represented Illinois’ 13th House District since 2007, and has been a champion of LGBTQ rights during his time in office. The endorsement comes as support for JB Pritzker continues to grow, with endorsements from Secretary of State Jesse White, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, the Illinois AFL-CIO, and over 20 individual unions. “Greg Harris has been a leader in the fight for LGBTQ equality in Illinois and I’m so proud to have his support,” said JB Pritzker. “Every day, Greg has fought hard to make Illinois a better, more welcoming place for all people and families, and he needs a partner in Springfield. I will stand with Greg to fight for working families and continue the progress we’ve made with LGBTQ rights. Together, I know we can build on his historic accomplishments, guarantee equal protections for all Illinoisans, and fight hate wherever it occurs in our state.” “I am so proud to stand with JB Pritzker in the fight for Illinois’ working families and the fight for equality,” said Assistant Majority Leader Greg Harris. “His whole life, JB has stood up again and again for what’s right and fought for LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, civil rights, and immigrant and refugee rights. But JB also understands there is a lot more work to do.”

BLACK FAITH LEADERS ENCOURAGE THEIR FLOCKS TO SIGN UP FOR OBAMACARE By Freddie Allen (NNPA Newswire Editor-In-Chief) Faith leaders in the Black community are encouraging members of their congregations to sign-up for healthcare coverage during the Affordable Care Act’s open enrollment period that ends on December 15. Reverend Edwin Sanders, the senior pastor and founder of the Metropolitan Interdenominational Church in Nashville, Tenn., said that supporting positive dialogue about healthcare is a part of the faith tradition. “We lift up healing as a benefit of our relationship to the God that we serve; we talk about the God who is a healer,” said Sanders. “There is a way in which those of us who are disciples, especially in the tradition of Jesus Christ, have a commitment to trying to make sure that we sustain these kinds of opportunities for people to get healed in our communities.” Sometimes, that commitment means working with political leaders. Congressman James Clyburn (D-S.C.) helped to launch the “Soul 2 Enroll” campaign, a national healthcare initiative aimed at mobilizing faith communities during the open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.” During a recent press conference on Capitol Hill, Clyburn said that faith is about much more than a relationship between you and the God you serve. “We are instructed that ‘faith without works is dead,’” said Clyburn. “If your brother or sister comes to you hungry or naked—and I believe if James were writing his epistle today, he would add sick—you feed them, you clothe them and provide them with healthcare.” Pastor Marquez Ball of Uplift Church in Laurel, Maryland said that healthcare is not a game to score political points. “Healthcare is a whole life issue,” said Ball. Uplift Church is just one of the organizing faith partners for the “Soul 2 Enroll” initiative. That group also includes: the National African American Clergy Network, Joseph A.C. Smith Ministries, the National Action Network, the Network Lobby for Catholic Social Justice, the Skinner Leadership Institute, The United Church of Christ and Values Partnerships. During a discussion about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) between congressional and faith leaders, Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner, the co-chair

of the National African American Clergy Network, said that despite the budget cuts imposed on the ACA by the Trump Administration, the faith community is marching forward. “The faith community knows how to do one thing: we know how to make bricks with no straw and we’re going to do it again,” said Williams-Skinner. “Healthcare is not a privilege; it is a right of every child of God.” Williams-Skinner continued: “My Bible teaches that Jesus’s ministry was about healing and helping the afflicted and lifting up those that are wounded…we must do that with the Affordable Care Act.” Reverend De-Ves Toon, the national field director for the National Action Network (NAN), said that NAN has helped to sign people up for healthcare coverage through the ACA since 2013 in more than 100 cities. “All of our chapters have health and wellness committees that are doing onthe-ground outreach in their perspective cities,” said Toon. “We just don’t focus on this during the open enrollment period, we do this year-round.” Toon added: “We will continue to do outreach to encourage people who might be afraid of the process to enroll for healthcare under [the Affordable Care Act].” Sanders said that because of the rich oral tradition of the Black community, everyone from the American Heart Association to local community health centers comes to the doorsteps of the church to promote answers to health problems. “God is the one that gives the intellect, God is one that gives the wisdom to doctors and to researchers to help them to develop the modern day cures that are increasingly available, but we need to make sure that more is done to make sure those cures and those medical responses are available to [our congregations],” said Sanders. “So, I believe that God is working miracles through the researchers, who are developing new ways to treat diseases and to address health problems.” Sanders continued: “As far as the open enrollment period, I think it ought to be a message that we are including in every worship experience that we have, as a people. For indeed, it is through our efforts and our tradition that we don’t let these moments pass us by.” For more information about signing up for healthcare coverage, visit Healthcare.gov.

Rise in Solar Schools Unlocks More Local Funding for Education Washington, D.C.— With installation costs plummeting, American schools are switching to solar energy at a rapid pace, reducing their electricity bills and freeing up resources to invest in education. There are now 5,489 K-12 schools in the United States that use solar energy, nearly double the total solar capacity that was installed at schools in 2014, according to a major new report by The Solar Foundation, Generation 180, and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). The dramatic growth in solar school adoption has been driven by rapidly declining installation costs. The average price of a solar school installation has dropped 67 percent in the last 10 years, and 19 percent in 2016 alone, this report found. Nearly 4 million students in the U.S. attend schools with solar power, with a combined capacity of 910 megawatts (MW), an increase of 86 percent over 2014. The amount of electricity these schools produce annually, at 1.4 million megawatt-hours, is enough to power over 190,000 homes. The report, Brighter Future: A Study on Solar in U.S. Schools, 2nd Edition, is the most comprehensive study to date on solar at K-12 schools nationwide. As a follow-up to the first study released in 2014, this report captures the accelerating trends of solar adoption in U.S. schools. California leads the nation in the number of solar schools by state, with 1,946 solar schools and a 489 MW capacity, followed by New Jersey, Arizona, Massachusetts, and New York. Nevada has the highest adoption rate, with 23 percent of schools using solar energy statewide. Arizona has the most solar school capacity on a per capita basis, at 86 watts per student. Complete data on solar schools nationwide and in all 50 states and the District of Columbia is available in the full report. An interactive map of solar schools across the United States and resources to help schools go solar are available at

gosolarschools.org. “Solar can help school districts save millions on electricity bills, freeing up funds for additional teachers, improved facilities, and enhanced academic and extracurricular programs,” said Andrea Luecke, president and executive director of The Solar Foundation. “In addition to cost savings, solar energy installations can serve as hands-on STEM

laboratories for students to learn about clean energy from the sun.” At the same time that costs are going down, schools have more financing options that minimize up-front investment. In recent years, most schools have financed their solar installations through power purchase agreements (PPAs), in which a third-party finances, builds, owns, and maintains the system. This allows schools and districts to purchase solar with very little initial cost. Within the last three years, nearly 90

percent of the schools for which data is available used a PPA to install solar. “There’s a reason solar is spreading so quickly across America’s school districts, and it’s pretty simple — when schools go solar, the entire community benefits,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, SEIA’s president and CEO. “By switching to solar energy, schools immediately see their electric bills go down, leaving more money for learning. Plus, what teacher wouldn’t want a life lesson in science and conservation right there on school grounds? It’s a win all the way around.” Solar Schools Campaign In conjunction with this report, clean energy nonprofit Generation 180 is launching a national Solar Schools Campaign to mobilize parents, students, school districts, and local leaders to support the transition to solar energy in their communities. The campaign is creating volunteer teams and will leverage a detailed “how-to-guide” in the report that provides advice on how schools can muster support, assess economic feasibility, identify financing options, generate proposals, and select installers for solar energy systems. “Many school districts need champions to help make stakeholders aware of the opportunities for going solar,” said Tish Tablan, National Organizer for Generation 180. “Our Solar Schools Campaign is designed to equip these champions with the information and tools they need. Once they see the financial, educational, and environmental benefits, we are confident that many schools will make the transition for a brighter future.” To read the full report and view an infographic of the major report findings, visit http://www.thesolarfoundation. org/solar-schools. SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to Illinois

Residents Affected By Severe Storms and Flooding WASHINGTON – Illinois businesses and residents affected by the severe storms and flooding on July 11-27, 2017 can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, SBA Administrator Linda McMahon announced recently. Administrator McMahon made the loans available in response to a letter from Gov. Bruce Rauner on Nov. 9, 2017, requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA. The declaration covers Lake County and the adjacent counties of Cook and McHenry in Illinois; and Kenosha in Wisconsin. “The SBA is strongly committed to providing the people of Illinois with the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist businesses of all sizes, homeowners and renters with federal disaster loans,” said Administrator McMahon. “Getting our businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our highest priority at SBA.” “Businesses and nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets,” said SBA Illinois District Director Robert S. Steiner. For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and private nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage. “Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real

estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center East in Atlanta. Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may now include a safe room or storm shelter to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster. Interest rates are as low as 3.215 percent for businesses, 2.500 percent for nonprofit organizations, and 1.938 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amount and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition. Survivors may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan. sba.gov/ela. Businesses and individuals may also obtain information and loan applications by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800659-2955 (1-800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing), or by emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. 5 tips for staying healthy this holiday season

Professionals Winter Care Tips for Textured Hair By Ursula Stephen

1. The elements of winter weather can cause damaging effects on hair. The lack of moisture in the air can cause hair and scalp to become dry. One great solution for a dry scalp is to use a conditioning shampoo and conditioner such as Suave Avocado + Olive Oil range. 2 Increasing your conditioning treatments and, switching to an oil based moisturizer is key. This will stay on the hair longer which as a result increases the protection from the chilly winter temperatures. Hydration is key! 3 Be sure to dry your hair completely. Hair takes much longer to dry in wintry weather and, your hair will break if it freezes! If you are not able to let your hair dry naturally, keep wash and go looks to a minimum. 4 Use a leave-in conditioner. This will prevent flyaway, static and frizzy hair, which is usually a sign that your hair is dry. Suave

Avocado & Olive Oil Leave-in Conditioner based is ideal for locking in moisture which helps prevent breakage. 5 While hats and scarves protect you from freezing weather, the fabrics can be very damaging to the hair—causing breakage and dryness. Be sure to line hats and collars with silk scarves. This will create a barrier of protection between your hair and your hats. 6 Hydrate at night. Like skin, hair is very receptive to treatments applied during night time hours. Dry heat plus the wintry weather takes away moisture from the hair, especially at night. For this an oil or serum is perfect. Suave Moroccan Oil Infusion and sleeping on a silk pillowcase will also help to keep moisture in during the night hours. 7 Protect the ends of your hair by wearing it up in buns and up-dos. Constant rubbing on winter fabrics can cause split ends. If you choose to wear it down, trim regularly so split ends don’t stand a chance!

Protecting your hair during the winter months can be as easy as following a few helpful tips.

(BPT) - As the holiday season approaches, it is as important as ever to stay healthy. With holiday parties and family gatherings, illnesses like the flu can spread easily - and you don’t want to miss out on the festivities. As the largest provider of influenza vaccine to the U.S., Sanofi Pasteur encourages you to help protect yourself and those around you from influenza with an annual flu vaccination. While everyone six months of age and older, with rare exception, should get an annual flu vaccination, it is especially important for adults age 65 years and older, as the flu can be particularly devastating for this population. Combined with pneumonia, flu is one of the top ten leading causes of death in older adults in the United States.1 On average, every four minutes, an adult age 65 years and older is hospitalized due to flu or flu-related complications, and every 12 minutes, an adult in the same age group dies as a result of flu or flu-related complications.1,2 In light of National Influenza Vaccination Week, here are five things you can do to help beat germs and promote health this holiday season. 1. Get an annual flu vaccination While many mistakenly think of the flu as only a mild illness and often confuse it with a cold, it is a contagious respiratory illness that can be severe and life-threatening, even for healthy individuals, and it can make the holiday season unbearable.3 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting an annual flu vaccination is the single best way to help prevent the flu each season.3 2. Ask your healthcare provider about which flu vaccine is right for you While an annual flu vaccination is vital for everyone six months of age and older, with rare exception, it is equally important to talk to your healthcare provider about choosing

the right flu vaccine for you. Because the immune system weakens with age, making it harder to fight disease, flu can be especially severe for adults age 65 years and older.1 Certain vaccines are developed to address the agerelated weakening of the immune system, so Sanofi Pasteur encourages everyone to talk to their healthcare provider about choosing the right flu vaccine. To learn more about the impact of influenza on adults age 65 years and older and the importance of choosing the right vaccine, visit http://www. nfid.org/flualert. 3. Spread holiday cheer, not germs Be sure to wash your hands often with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds, especially before and after preparing food.4,5 Make handwashing part of your pre-cooking and premeal routine for the entire family.

4. Bundle up! While the holidays bring warmth and cheer, the weather outside may suggest otherwise. It’s important to bundle up to stay dry and warm during the cold, damp winter months. Be sure to wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including light, warm layers, gloves, hats, scarves and waterproof boots. 5. Head to bed If you do catch a cold or the flu, try to limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.6 The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has gone down, except to get medical care or for other necessities.6 Don’t miss out on time spent with family and friends this holiday season. By following these simple tips and getting an annual flu vaccination, you can help prevent the spread of influenza and its potentially severe complications. 1 U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). OUR LIVES ARE DESIGNED BY THE DECISIONS THAT WE MAKE The power to make decisions is an incredible tool and this is a good thing. With this tool, we can reconfigure our life, repair our families, rebuild our communities, and reconstruct our selfdetermination. When we make decisions that are in alignment with where we say we want to go, those decisions become the power that drives us forward and propels us toward the destination to which we have set our intention. When making decisions, it is good practice to always begin with the end in mind. How much better though to begin with the One who is Alpha and Omega – Beginning and End? The wisdom writer in Proverbs sagely counseled that we should, “Trust the Lord with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding; acknowledge him in all of your ways, and he will direct your path.” Whenever we find ourselves confused or unclear, perhaps, it is because we have disconnected our process of decision making from the Source. Remember, the Source is the channel from which comes the light. Whenever there is a dark situation or experience, we can benefit simply from turning to then turning on the light. If you want to make better decisions and live by divine design, include these steps in your decisionmaking process: 1. Trust God to participate in the process. It does not matter, however heavy or light the matter, invite God to weigh-in. The more you do, the greater will grow your faith and trust; 2. Refuse to lean solely on your own understanding. Though you are conscious, cognizant, connected, and more, learn to lean on the Lord. If you share the weight of your burden with the Lord, you will find that you have a companion worthy to carry. You will find this companion to be stable, able, reliable, and dependable; 3. Acknowledge the GPS (God’s Positioning System): admit that you can use some help getting to the destination; recognize where you are beginning from and where you want to go; allow the guidance of the Omniscient God to illuminate your path; 4. Accept His direction, for it leads His will, which is good. Address: 11901 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60643 Phone: (773) 568-2282 www.cutemple.org

I’m merely pointing out that we have some say in This column is all about not putting limits on a limitless God. this. We have a spiritual obligation to not limit God. The solution is In church, the sermon was all about how we, as finite creatures, do a to recognize those things we do that are subtle, but devastating to pretty good job of trying to put the infinite being of God into some our achieving God’s purpose for us. Fear limits God. If you think the way, shape or form that we can understand. The problem with that answer will be no, you won’t ask. Unbelief limits God. If you don’t is we can’t do it. Our brain won’t let us comprehend all knowing, believe it’s possible, then all things become impossible. Disobedience all powerful, everywhere since before time limits God. If you disobey, you don’t think began and after it stops. You see the terms you have the right to ask for anything. And “all,” “before,” and “after,” presuppose there comparison limits God. If you feel unworthy is a limit to time and space and power and and less than those who have more, you’ll accept understanding and things. It is the way of a finite what you have and nothing more. Who wants limits on God’s promises. to expect everything when the world has taught you that you don’t deserve You see each one of us has an image of ourselves on the inside anything? My proof of what I’m saying is in Matthew 4:11, after the devil of who we are and what we can do. It has been shaped by friends tempted Jesus with everything in the world and He refused in the name of and family, situations and circumstances, what we want and what God. “The devil left Him and angels came and attended Him.” In the name we have. For many of us that image is in direct conflict with what of the devil, Jesus was aware enough to say, no, thank you. And because He God sees and knows He has placed within us. Let me put it this knew where His blessings lay, God sent angels to attend Him and in God’s way. Would you ask a homeless man for $100? Of course not! I am now of the opinion, it’s time for all of us to recognize He’s your God, daring you to ask so He can give. Without to put demands on God. I am not being arrogant or presumptuous. I the question, without the demand, it’s an unfulfilled dream, a mountain am trying to be humble, respectful and obedient. God has been saying too big to move, a desire never met. And this I know. briefly BOOK COVER

‘Ornaments of Love’ shows importance of family traditions FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Theresa James returns to the publishing scene with the release of her latest book, “Ornaments of Love” (published by Balboa Press). The book expresses the importance of creating family traditions. Wanting to honor the life of her son, Sean, she wrote the book in his perspective. James believes that family traditions can be a wonderful way to create tighter bonds and show love between parents and their children. The book shows one such tradition of hanging special ornaments on the Christmas tree each year and sharing memories and stories with each other. “I think (my book) may prompt sharing from children to their parents and allow for stronger bonds between children and their parents,” says James. “It will give me great joy to know that parents or grandparents pull their little children or grandchildren onto their laps and read my books to them.”

A live lit performance collective featuring Black women, femmes, and gender nonconforming artists, Melanin Voices hit the ground running after its launch at A g Thing! in December 2016. The collective partnered with the Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks to showcase the narratives of young Black queer and transgender women and girls. Now they are teaming up with the #LetUsBreathe Collective for a special edition of the dynamic series to benefit survivors of the hurricane that recently decimated the island of Puerto Rico. “Art and performance are powerful tools to create social change,” says A g Thing! founder Glenance Green, “and now is the time to use all of our creativity to combat the political apathy toward Puerto Rico.” Melanin Voices showcases poetry and live literature to WHERE: The #BreathingRoom Space amplify the voices of 1434 W. 51st Street marginalized women Chicago, IL 60609 in Chicago. “As part of WHEN: December 15, 2017 the Black diaspora,” 8:30-10:30 #LetUsBreathe TICKETS: $10-20 co-founder Kristiana Rae Colón adds, “it’s important that our organizing efforts include our brothers and sisters on la isla.” “It’s unthinkable that American citizens have gone without power, clean water, or access to food in many places on the island,” says Green, “so it’s our job to use our talents to contribute how we can.” Melanin Voices takes audiences on a poetic journey through the collective’s work. Giant Steps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a specialized, therapeutic day school for children and young adults living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Improv for Autism has been successfully running at The Second City Training Center in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood since 2014, serving both teens and adults. “The early research in this area has shown that improvisation has a discernible positive effect in improving communication and prosocial behaviors in individuals with autism. We are thrilled to partner with Giant Steps so that we can collectively help more kids, parents, teachers and friends in this wonderful community,” said Kelly Leonard, Executive Director of Insights & Applied Improvisation for The Second City. The classes at Giant Steps school will be held each Saturday at 2:00 p.m., for eight weeks. Each class session is 90 minutes long.
