“Legislators can prioritize the policy resolutions based on the needs of their constituents and work to have the topics adopted in their home states,” said Gregory W. Porter, the President of the NBCSL. “In addition to the policy resolutions, conference attendees heard presentations from Joe Hogsett, the Mayor of Indianapolis; Indiana Governor Eric. W. Holcomb; and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams who spoke about a number of health concerns including the Opioid Crisis,” said Porter.

Faith and community leaders from across the County gathered on Dec. 7 at the Lake Shore Cafe to endorse Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County Board President, in her re-election bid. Speakers praised Preckwinkle for her strong record on healthcare and criminal justice reform.

“We are trying to make our healthcare system more sustainable and provide health care to those who are indigent or have health care plans that don’t fit their needs or are uninsured,” said Preckwinkle. “On the criminal justice side, we’re trying to bring people out of the jail who are accused of crimes, not convicted, and give them a chance to go to work and go to school and support themselves and their family.”

Several clergy members gathered in the Kenwood Conference Room at Lake Shore Cafe to stand behind President Preckwinkle and show support for her re-election campaign. Several people spoke about the accomplishments and positive impact Preckwinkle has had on Cook County during her last two terms as Board President.

Dr. Phelese Binion, President and CEO of the West Side Ministers Coalition stood at the podium to speak about health care in Cook County and how it has improved under President Preckwinkle.

“In 2014, for the first time in county history, Cook County served more insured people than uninsured people through the County Care program,” said Binion. “I’m one of those people, I remember, because health care is so expensive, that I suffered for a long time because I didn’t want the hospital bills.”

Dr. Binion experienced first hand the benefits of affordable public

healthcare in the county and endorsed Preckwinkle because of it.

“I am truly in support of president Preckwinkle. I appreciate her thinking about peoples’ lives and qualities of lives,” said Binion.

President Preckwinkle has not only focused on health care and the criminal justice system, she has also work hard to close budget gaps for the county.

“We inherited a very difficult situation and in the last seven years we have closed budget gaps of about 2 billion. We’ve reduced our work force by about fifteen percent and we’ve reduced our debt by about eleven percent,” said Preckwinkle. “We have been hard at work trying to make the county more efficient.”

Reverend Dr. Leon Finney Jr., founder and CEO of Urban Broadcast Media, also stood at the podium to endorse Preckwinkle for re-election, stating, “when you add Toni to anything, anything gets better.”

“Jobs for those who are structurally unemployed and denied better opportunities because of their pasts are better off because of Toni Preckwinkle. Business opportunities are better for us because of Toni Preckwinkle,” said Finney. “Our senior citizens who need care and nurturing in their golden years are better off because of Toni Preckwinkle. Women all through [Cook Country] are better off because of the stance Toni Preckwinkle has taken through the years.”

Rev. Finney said that from now until the primary election in March, he will be working to build a coalition to help deliver the votes across Cook County for Toni Preckwinkle.

Obama Foundation Announces Anne Filipic as Chief Program Officer Chicago, IL – The Obama Foundation recently announced Anne Filipic as Chief Program Officer. As Chief Program Officer, Anne will play a critical role in designing and implementing the Obama Foundation’s programming initiatives designed to inspire and equip aspiring leaders to change their communities.

Anne has also served as interim Chief Operating Officer since October. She will hold both positions simultaneously while the Obama Foundation finalizes its operational structure.

Gender & Justice: The Criminalization of Youth in Cook County

Gender & Justice is a groundbreaking & timely symposium that will address advocacy and community solutions centering the experiences of justice-involved girls & LGBTQI/GNC youth. It will be the first of its kind in Chicago. The Keynote Speaker is Shakira Washington, Vice President at The National Crittenton Foundation (TNCF). Shakira has spent the past twenty years as a community organizer, program developer, and researcher to address social, economic, and political inequities faced by marginalized communities. The National Crittenton Foundation, reports that the juvenile justice system is incapable of meeting the needs of girls who are especially vulnerable to victimization.

• The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention reports that girls are the fastest growing population in the juvenile justice system.

• According to the report Gender Injustice: System Level Juvenile Justice Reform For Girls, Girls of color and girls who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and gender non-conforming are found to be disproportionately involved in the juvenile justice system (LGBTQ/ GNC).

Illinois Legislators Take Action to Protect Voters

Illinois voters may get the protection they deserve, thanks to the leadership of Senator Kwame Raoul and Senator Cunningham in partnership with other state legislators and Indivisible Chicago who recently proposed legislation to secure the use of private voter information.

The Illinois State Board of Elections currently subscribes to two national voter database systems designed to help election authorities identify voters who may be registered in more than one state. The national databases are Crosscheck and the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC). The legislation unveiled recently, SB 2273, will remove Illinois from the Crosscheck system but will allow the state to remain in ERIC, which is reportedly regarded widely by state and local election authorities as the superior system.

Crosscheck is a program created and operated by Kansas election officials. It collects voter registration information from participating states and “crosschecks” the data to find duplicate registrations. Recent research by Indivisible Chicago has exposed numerous security flaws and raised questions about how the data is used.

Assistant Majority Leader Greg Harris Endorses JB Pritzker at LGBTQ Meet and Greet

Assistant Majority Leader Greg Harris recently announced his endorsement of JB Pritzker for governor at an LGBTQ event at Sidetrack on the north side of Chicago. Greg Harris has represented Illinois’ 13th House District since 2007, and has been a champion of LGBTQ rights during his time in office. The endorsement comes as support for JB Pritzker continues to grow, with endorsements from Secretary of State Jesse White, Comptroller Susana Mendoza, the Illinois AFL-CIO, and over 20 individual unions.

“Greg Harris has been a leader in the fight for LGBTQ equality in Illinois and I’m so proud to have his support,” said JB Pritzker. “Every day, Greg has fought hard to make Illinois a better, more welcoming place for all people and families, and he needs a partner in Springfield. I will stand with Greg to fight for working families and continue the progress we’ve made with LGBTQ rights. Together, I know we can build on his historic accomplishments, guarantee equal protections for all Illinoisans, and fight hate wherever it occurs in our state.”

“I am so proud to stand with JB Pritzker in the fight for Illinois’ working families and the fight for equality,” said Assistant Majority Leader Greg Harris. “His whole life, JB has stood up again and again for what’s right and fought for LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, civil rights, and immigrant and refugee rights. The Apostolic Faith Church (AFC) recently opened their new facility (pictured). Bishop Horace Smith, pastor of AFC, has emphasized that the church is inclusive to all generations and the new facility will provide the community with a variety of services and programs.

Apostolic Faith Church Opens New Facility By: Katherine Newman Apostolic Faith Church held an opening service for its new 3,000 seat worship complex on Nov. 26. The space has been designed to support and improve the community and the lives of Chicago residents.

“Our theme was crossing over to multiple generations. We had young people, elders, and board members and each one had a participation in the ribbon cutting at different points in the facility to indicate that we are doing this as a multi-generational church,” said Bishop Horace E. Smith, pastor of Apostolic Faith Church. “Our emphasis is to make sure that we are inclusive to all generations.”

The Apostolic Faith Church has served Bronzeville residents since 1915 and is one of Chicago’s longstanding congregations, according to a press release from the church.

Bishop Horace E. Smith, M.D. was named pastor of Apostolic Faith Church (AFC) in 1980. He is also an attending physician specializing in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

In addition to being a worship facility, the new complex is home to a multipurpose youth center, an administrative annex with classrooms and a safe haven for young people and families to come to.

“We make sure what we do not only impacts families who are members of our church but also people who are members of the community. Of course we want them to be a member of the church but it’s not a requirement,” said Bishop Smith.

Rise in Solar Schools Unlocks More Local Funding for Education Washington, D.C.— With installation costs plummeting, American schools are switching to solar energy at a rapid pace, reducing their electricity bills and freeing up resources to invest in education. There are now 5,489 K-12 schools in the United States that use solar energy, nearly double the total solar capacity that was installed at schools in 2014, according to a major new report by The Solar Foundation, Generation 180, and the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

The dramatic growth in solar school adoption has been driven by rapidly declining installation costs. The average price of a solar school installation has dropped 67 percent in the last 10 years, and 19 percent in 2016 alone, this report found.

Nearly 4 million students in the U.S. attend schools with solar power, with a combined capacity of 910 megawatts (MW), an increase of 86 percent over 2014. The amount of electricity these schools produce annually, at 1.4 million megawatt-hours, is enough to power over 190,000 homes.

The report, Brighter Future: A Study on Solar in U.S. Schools, 2nd Edition, is the most comprehensive study to date on solar at K-12 schools nationwide. As a follow-up to the first study released in 2014, this report captures the accelerating trends of solar adoption in U.S. schools.

California leads the nation in the number of solar schools by state, with 1,946 solar schools and a 489 MW capacity, followed by New Jersey, Arizona, Massachusetts, and New York. Nevada has the highest adoption rate, with 23 percent of schools using solar energy statewide. Arizona has the most solar school capacity on a per capita basis, at 86 watts per student.

“Solar can help school districts save millions on electricity bills, freeing up funds for additional teachers, improved facilities, and enhanced academic and extracurricular programs,” said Andrea Luecke, president and executive director of The Solar Foundation. “In addition to cost savings,

solar energy installations can serve as hands-on STEM laboratories for students to learn about clean energy from the sun.”

At the same time that costs are going down, schools have more financing options that minimize up-front investment.

In recent years, most schools have financed their solar installations through power purchase agreements (PPAs), in which a third-party finances, builds, owns, and maintains the system. This allows schools and districts to purchase solar with

very little initial cost. Within the last three years, nearly 90 percent of the schools for which data is available used a PPA to install solar.

“There’s a reason solar is spreading so quickly across America’s school districts, and it’s pretty simple — when schools go solar, the entire community benefits,” said Abigail Ross Hopper, SEIA’s president and CEO. “By switching to solar energy, schools immediately see their electric bills go down, leaving more money for learning. Plus, what teacher wouldn’t want a life lesson in science and conservation right there on school grounds? It’s a win all the way around.”

Solar Schools Campaign In conjunction with this report, clean energy nonprofit Generation 180 is launching a national Solar Schools Campaign to mobilize parents, students, school districts, and local leaders to support the transition to solar energy in their communities. The campaign is creating volunteer teams and will leverage a detailed “how-to-guide” in the report that provides advice on how schools can muster support, assess economic feasibility, identify financing options, generate proposals, and select installers for solar energy systems.

“Many school districts need champions to help make stakeholders aware of the opportunities for going solar,” said Tish Tablan, National Organizer for Generation 180. “Our Solar Schools Campaign is designed to equip these champions with the information and tools they need. Once they see the financial, educational, and environmental benefits, we are confident that many schools will make the transition for a brighter future.”

ATLANTA - Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor in the United States of the Porsche 911, 718 Boxster and Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan model lines, recently announced November 2017 sales of 5,555 units. This marks a 0.8 percent increase over November 2016. Year-todate, retail deliveries are up 2.5 percent.

“With 5,555 deliveries, we set a new all-time monthly record. In particular, our two-door sports cars – the Porsche 911, and the 718 model line – showed impressive double-digit growth versus last year,” said Klaus Zellmer, President and CEO of PCNA. Porsche 911 sales in the U.S. reached 976 units, a 39.6 percent increase yearover-year. The 718 Boxster and Cayman line posted 522 retail deliveries, up 14.2 percent over November 2016. Sales of the Panamera sports sedan stood at 729, a 43.7 percent increase year-to-date. The Macan continued to experience high demand with 1,981 vehicles sold, up 14 percent year-to-date.

Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle sales in the U.S. were at 1,749 units, a 23.4 percent increase over November 2016. Year-to-date, CPO sales are up 11.2 percent with 16,956 deliveries for 2017.

SBA Offers Disaster Assistance to Illinois

Residents Affected By Severe Storms and Flooding WASHINGTON – Illinois businesses and residents affected by the severe storms and flooding on July 11-27, 2017 can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, SBA Administrator Linda McMahon announced recently.

Administrator McMahon made the loans available in response to a letter from Gov. Bruce Rauner on Nov. 9, 2017, requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA. The declaration covers Lake County and the adjacent counties of Cook and McHenry in Illinois; and Kenosha in Wisconsin.

“The SBA is strongly committed to providing the people of Illinois with the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist businesses of all sizes, homeowners and renters with federal disaster loans,” said Administrator McMahon. “Getting our businesses and communities up and running after a disaster is our highest priority at SBA.” “Businesses and nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets,” said SBA Illinois District Director Robert S. Steiner.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small aquaculture businesses and private nonprofit organizations, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. EIDL assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage. “Loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real

estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for loans up to $40,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal property,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA’s Disaster Field Operations Center East in Atlanta. Applicants may be eligible for a loan amount increase up to 20 percent of their physical damages, as verified by the SBA for mitigation purposes. Eligible mitigation improvements may now include a safe room or storm shelter to help protect property and occupants from future damage caused by a similar disaster. Interest rates are as low as 3.215 percent for businesses, 2.500 percent for nonprofit organizations, and 1.938 percent for homeowners and renters with terms up to 30 years. Loan amount and terms are set by the SBA and are based on each applicant’s financial condition. Survivors may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan. sba.gov/ela. Businesses and individuals may also obtain information and loan applications by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800659-2955 (1-800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing), or by emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Loan applications can also be downloaded at www.sba.gov/disaster. Completed applications should be returned to the center or mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155.

1. The elements of winter weather can cause damaging effects on hair. The lack of moisture in the air can cause hair and scalp to become dry. One great solution for a dry scalp is to use a conditioning shampoo and conditioner such as Suave Avocado + Olive Oil range.

(BPT) - As the holiday season approaches, it is as important as ever to stay healthy.

With holiday parties and family gatherings, illnesses like the flu can spread easily - and you don’t want to miss out on the festivities.

As the largest provider of influenza vaccine to the U.S., Sanofi Pasteur encourages you to help protect yourself and those around you from influenza with an annual flu vaccination.

While everyone six months of age and older, with rare exception, should get an annual flu vaccination, it is especially important for adults age 65 years and older, as the flu can be particularly devastating for this population.

Combined with pneumonia, flu is one of the top ten leading causes of death in older adults in the United States.1 On average, every four minutes, an adult age 65 years and older is hospitalized due to flu or flu-related complications, and every 12 minutes, an adult in the same age group dies as a result of flu or flu-related complications.1,2 In light of National Influenza Vaccination Week, here are five things you can do to help beat germs and promote health this holiday season.

1. Get an annual flu vaccination While many mistakenly think of the flu as only a mild illness and often confuse it with a cold, it is a contagious respiratory illness that can be severe and life-threatening, even for healthy individuals, and it can make the holiday season unbearable.3 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), getting an annual flu vaccination is the single best way to help prevent the flu each season.3 2. Ask your healthcare provider about which flu vaccine is right for you While an annual flu vaccination is vital for everyone six months of age and older, with rare exception, it is equally important to talk to your healthcare provider about choosing

the right flu vaccine for you.

Because the immune system weakens with age, making it harder to fight disease, flu can be especially severe for adults age 65 years and older.1 Certain vaccines are developed to address the agerelated weakening of the immune system, so Sanofi Pasteur encourages everyone to talk to their healthcare provider about choosing the right flu vaccine. 3. Spread holiday cheer, not germs Be sure to wash your hands often with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds, especially before and after preparing food.4,5 Make handwashing part of your pre-cooking and premeal routine for the entire family.

While the holidays bring warmth and cheer, the weather outside may suggest otherwise. It’s important to bundle up to stay dry and warm during the cold, damp winter months.

Be sure to wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including light, warm layers, gloves, hats, scarves and waterproof boots.

5. Head to bed If you do catch a cold or the flu, try to limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.6 The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever has gone down, except to get medical care or for other necessities.6 Don’t miss out on time spent with family and friends this holiday season. By following these simple tips and getting an annual flu vaccination, you can help prevent the spread of influenza and its potentially severe complications.

OUR LIVES ARE DESIGNED BY THE DECISIONS THAT WE MAKE The power to make decisions is an incredible tool and this is a good thing. With this tool, we can reconfigure our life, repair our families, rebuild our communities, and reconstruct our selfdetermination.

When we make decisions that are in alignment with where we say we want to go, those decisions become the power that drives us forward and propels us toward the destination to which we have set our intention. When making decisions, it is good practice to always begin with the end in mind.

How much better though to begin with the One who is Alpha and Omega – Beginning and End? The wisdom writer in Proverbs sagely counseled that we should, “Trust the Lord with all your heart; lean not on your own understanding; acknowledge him in all of your ways, and he will direct your path.” Whenever we find ourselves confused or unclear, perhaps, it is because we have disconnected our process of decision making from the Source.

Remember, the Source is the channel from which comes the light. Whenever there is a dark situation or experience, we can benefit simply from turning to then turning on the light.

If you want to make better decisions and live by divine design, include these steps in your decisionmaking process: 1. Trust God to participate in the process. It does not matter, however heavy or light the matter, invite God to weigh-in. The more you do, the greater will grow your faith and trust; 2. Refuse to lean solely on your own understanding.

Though you are conscious, cognizant, connected, and more, learn to lean on the Lord. If you share the weight of your burden with the Lord, you will find that you have a companion worthy to carry. You will find this companion to be stable, able, reliable, and dependable; 3. Acknowledge the GPS (God’s Positioning System): admit that you can use some help getting to the destination; recognize where you are beginning from and where you want to go; allow the guidance of the Omniscient God to illuminate your path; 4. Accept His direction, for it leads His will, which is good.

Melanin Voices takes audiences on a poetic journey through the collective’s work. The multidisciplinary blend of scripted and improvised performance weaves together poetry, short stories, vignettes, fiction, nonfiction, and song to create a beautiful tapestry of Chicago’s underrepresented voices.

The fundraiser will benefit families impacted by Hurricane Maria and the preexisting socioeconomic inequalities that left them vulnerable. THE SECOND CITY TRAINING CENTER AND GIANT STEPS BRING ‘IMPROV FOR AUTISM’ TO THE SUBURBS CHICAGO - The Second City Training Center (SCTC), the world’s largest school of improvisation and part of Chicago’s legendary comedy institution, The Second City, is proud to bring its groundbreaking Improv for Autism classes to the Western suburbs. Beginning Saturday, January 13th, the SCTC’s Wellness Program workshops will be offered at Giant Steps school in Lisle, IL. Giant Steps, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a specialized, therapeutic day school for children and young adults living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Improv for Autism has been successfully running at The Second City Training Center in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood since 2014, serving both teens and adults.

“The early research in this area has shown that improvisation has a discernible positive effect in improving communication and prosocial behaviors in individuals with autism. We are thrilled to partner with Giant Steps so that we can collectively help more kids, parents, teachers and friends in this wonderful community,” said Kelly Leonard, Executive Director of Insights & Applied Improvisation for The Second City.

The classes at Giant Steps school will be held each Saturday at 2:00 p.m., for eight weeks. Each class session is 90 minutes long. Classes are open to students, ages 14-18, with a primary diagnosis of autism. The cost for registration at secondcity. com is $295 per student.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for Giant Steps and Second City Training Center to partner together in order to bring the benefits of Improv for Autism to a much broader audience in the Chicagoland suburbs,” said Giant Steps Instructional Design & Communications Manager, Greg Lawrence. “We are always looking for ways to expand and enhance our services and supports beyond our walls in order to benefit the larger ASD community, and Improv for Autism is a perfect fit.”

“Our campus is near many major roadways, which can be incredibly important to those with ASD who aren’t able to make long journeys in a car,” Lawrence added.
