Is Photography Over?

Corey Keller, curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), recently reflected on the current state of the medium of photography during a session at Columbia College’s Ferguson Lecture Hall, located at 600 S. Michigan Ave. Since the invention of photography, the medium has been defined by the concepts of fixing and fading, according to the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MOCP).

Keller reflected on the issues raised by two symposia she organized at SFMOMA, controversially-titled “Is Photography Over?” in 2010 and more recently, “The Photographic Event” (2016).

During the Columbia college session, Keller explained that both symposia’s raised questions about the current state of the medium at moments of intense and rapid change, not only in how pictures are made, but how they are shared, kept and discarded.

“This was the moment when social media began to bloom and we began to see shifts in how people communicated, especially using photography,” she said. “In 2008, Facebook had 100 million users and in 2009 it had 200 million users.

But in 2010, it rose to 400 million users and now it has 2 billion monthly users.”

that something was over, but didn’t know what “over” meant? But she noted that the history of photography has made moments of ending and beginning a routine occurrence in the last 180 years of photography’s history.

She continued to explain that the routine occurrence of photography began during the birth of the snapshot in 1888, which gave people a dynamic, rhetorical grammar of the snapshot, a medium suited to its vitality and its contemporary moment that continues to inspire photographers today.

Keller said it was through photography that life was

transformed into a photo op and photographs into memories.

“The same Kodak sentiment finds its expression in the hashtag “Pics or it didn’t happen,” or “Do it for the Gram,” Keller said. “This kind of compulsive documentation and the connection between the act and imaging is proof that the existence of photography did not begin through social media, but has been egged on by the photographic industry for 100 years.”

In the movie, “The Whisteblower,” a 112 minute drama based on the experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac, Canadian filmmaker Larysa Kondracki tells a grueling story of human trafficking in Bosnia.

Bolkovac is played by Rachel Weisz, a Nebraska cop who serves as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia, who outs the United Nations for covering up a sex scandal in a world where cover-ups and conspiracies unfold in the story’s plot.

Inspired by the book, The Whistleblower: Sex Trafficking, Military Contractors, and One Woman’s Fight for Justice,” by Kathryn Bolkovac, the film received mixed reviews, but shines a light on sex trafficking and the horrors associated with the crime.

From Bosnia, to Boston, to Los Angeles and to Chicago, the vileness of human trafficking and child exploitation is being played out not only in the movies, but in cities across the nation.

According to reports, back in May, five people were arrested in connection with trafficking women for sex at brothels in and around Boston.

In July, thirteen girls and young women, including a 15-year-old, were rescued as part of one of the largest sex trafficking rings on the West Coast. In Chicago, more recently in October, the FBI arrested more than 100 people in a nationwide sex trafficking sting, including two in northern Illinois.

The connection between homelessness and human trafficking was also detailed in two groundbreaking studies released this past April.

The research was part of the most comprehensive findings to date on the prevalence of human trafficking among homeless youth in the United States and Canada.

An initiative by Covenant House International, the two groundbreaking studies focused on the incidence of trafficking among homeless youth and included 911 interviews. The studies were conducted by The Field Center for Children’s Policy, Practice & Research and the Loyola University Modern Slavery Research Project.

Of the 641 youth Loyola researchers interviewed at Covenant House sites around the United States and Canada, nearly 19% were identified as victims of some form of human trafficking. Researchers also found that more than 14% of the total population had been trafficked for sex, while 8% had been trafficked for other forced labor. Three percent were trafficked for both sex and labor, according to the Loyola report. Moreover, 91% of the respondents reported being approached by someone who was offering an opportunity for income that was too good to be true. This included situations that turned into trafficking as well as other offers for commercial sexual exchanges.

Researchers based their conclusions on the legal definition of human trafficking outlined by the U.S. Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (later renamed the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA).

In February, Covenant House Illinois opened in Chicago on 30 West Chicago. On Thursday, NOVEMBER 86th, locations across the country will host a sleep out, an annual fundraising event designed to raise awareness about youth

homelessness. Participants hope to raise $150k for the cause. Currently, 44 participants have pledged their support, according to Daphne Ortiz, publicist for the organization.

It’s not only an international issue, but a local issue,” she added.

“Predators often use force, manipulation, or coercion to lure their victims into commercial sexual exploitation. Victims are as young as 12 with 5 months old being the youngest known to be trafficked,” Holloway stated.

Because of the seriousness of the crime, Holloway said she wanted to do something about it. That’s why she started Hope and Divine Purpose Transitional Living Home, Inc. Part of the home’s mission will be to promote pro-social relationships, enhance confidence and self-worth while providing a safe-stable living environment to people impacted by the crime.

Much of this will be accomplished through The Collaborative Model To Individual Empowerment Rescue Program. The program uses a variety of programs such as therapeutic counseling, education and life skills training which lead to the process of independence.

That we only learned about that plea today, when Special Counsel Robert Mueller is indicting Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, suggests Papadopoulos’s cooperation with the investigation is problematic for the president.

Mueller filed a motioncalling Papadopoulos a “proactive cooperator” and urged the court to maintain secrecy because Papadopoulos had agreed to provide information relevant to an ongoing investigation of Russian interference with the election.

Small Changes in What You Eat Can Make a Big Difference (StatePoint) Not everyone is inclined to think about the global impact of their food choices, particularly when they are not in their own kitchens.

But experts say that average consumers can learn more about what’s on their plate and how it got there no matter who’s doing the cooking, and use this knowledge to make responsible choices.

When it comes to seafood, a recently released report may provide some useful insights. The second edition of the “Sea of Distress” report by Greenpeace found that some foodservice industry players -- especially Sodexo, Aramark, and Compass Group -- have taken important steps toward protecting the oceans and workers, reducing their plastic footprint, ensuring transparency, and advocating for better practices at sea. While the majority of the fifteen companies assessed in the report failed the benchmarks set by Greenpeace, the report indicates that some of those companies are starting to work toward sustainable seafood, transparency, and advocacy for oceans and seafood industry workers.

“It is a good sign that some key foodservice companies are moving in the right direction on sustainability for our oceans and the ethical treatment of workers,” says Greenpeace oceans

The U.S. foodservice industry represents approximately half of food-dollar spending outside of the home every day. With annual sales exceeding $700 billion, this growing industry has a tremendous impact on the environment and workers worldwide.

Greenpeace’s foodservice ranking comes on the heels of major commitments from global tuna giant Thai Union to provide more sustainable and ethical seafood. Greenpeace says

that other foodservice companies can follow Thai Union’s lead, using their market and political influence to transform the industry for the better.

Greenpeace says that individuals can make a positive difference in the following ways.

• Get involved. Join the #BreakFreeFromPlastic movement. Ask that foodservice companies immediately reduce their plastic consumption.

• Eat less seafood. Reducing seafood consumption now can help lessen the pressure on oceans, ensuring fish and healthy ecosystems for the future.

• Vote with your dollar. Use the Seafood Watch app to buy only green-rated “Best Choice” seafood. On a global scale it can sometimes feel like our small choices don’t make a big impact. But experts say that all consumers can make a difference with their words and their wallets.

Manafort and Gates: What did they do?

Manafort advised the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump during the summer of 2016. He abruptly departed when details of his prior dealings with Ukraine’s Party of Regions and former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych were made public.

Yanukovych was president of Ukraine during the time when the Ukrainian territory of Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.

His party, backed by Russian oligarchs and supporters, opposed NATO and used inflammatory anti-Western rhetoric that may have endangered U.S. Marines. Corruption and widespread protests ultimately led Yanukovych

to flee Ukraine for Russia. Earlier this year, he went on trial for treason. The prosecution alleges he wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin, requesting that troops be sent into Ukraine.

From 2004 to 2014, Paul Manafort earned millions advising the party and burnishing its reputation in the U.S. and other Western nations. He also forged relationships with the pro-Russian oligarchs who funded the party, organizing separate private business deals that earned him more millions.

Prior to his work in Ukraine, Manafort worked for some of the most unsavorydictators around the world, including Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, Jonas Savimbi in Angola and

Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire.

Rick Gates is described as Manafort’s “righthand man” in these consulting activities and during his time with the Trump campaign.

Now, they each face 12 counts, including conspiracy to launder money, failure to register as a foreign agent and knowingly making false statements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The most eye-catching charge is “conspiracy against the United States,” defined as “knowingly and intentionally [conspiring] to defraud the United States by impeding, impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful governmental functions of a government agency, namely the Department CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

In 2018, a new law goes into effect which could reduce homelessness among youth and thereby have an impact on human trafficking.

Legislation to provide homeless youth with the option of using transitional housing without the permission of their parents or guardians has been signed by the Governor Bruce Rauner.

Sen. Donne Trotter, D-Chicago, is the Senate sponsor of House Bill 3212 that changes the Emancipation of Minors Act by allowing homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 18 to live in transitional housing without being partially emancipated or getting consent.

“Human trafficking affects some of our most vulnerable citizens, especially homeless youth who could fall into the wrong hands looking for comfort and resources to survive. House Bill 3212 provides another path to transitional housing for 16 to 18-year-olds, and that safe space could prevent a homeless teen from becoming the next victim of human trafficking,” he added. HB3212 becomes effective January 1, 2018.

The indictment details efforts to launder money through multiple U.S. and foreign corporations and banks. It alleges that more than US$75 million flowed through the offshore accounts Manafort and Gates established.

Manafort’s efforts to lobby U.S. government officials on behalf of the Ukrainian government required that he register and report his activities and his income. The indictment alleges that both Manafort and Gates failed to do so. When asked, they allegedly misled U.S.

authorities about the nature of their activities.

Is this the silver bullet President Trump’s opponents have been waiting for to prove the president worked with the Russians during the campaign? No. While “conspiracy against the United States” is a big bold charge, the indictment focuses on activities that occurred before Manafort joined the campaign.

Prosecutors tend to go after the small fish first, in the hopes that their cooperation will advance the case against bigger fish. Manafort is not a small fish. Are even bigger fish yet to come? The short answer is that we don’t

But these indictments convey important information about the path forward for Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team. Early indictments send signals about the course of the investigation. The indictments against Manafort and Gates suggest this investigation is broad, encompassing more than an immediate interest in “collusion” during the campaign. This could indicate that the investigation has a long way to go.

Obama Foundation Summit Unites Hundreds of Civic Leaders

By Christopher Shuttlesworth The Obama Foundation recently invited 500 civic leaders from 60 countries and 27 states, to the first-ever Obama Foundation Summit, at Marriott Marquis Chicago, located at the 2121 S. Prairie Ave. The Obama Foundation Summit spotlighted incredible individuals and projects around the world that are continuing to make an impact and convened those that are tackling challenges in their own backyards.

“For Barack and I, we wanted to make sure this city knew that bringing the Obama Foundation back [to Chicago] was important to us because we love this city,” Former First Lady Michelle Obama said. “This was the city that raised me and connected me to the love of my life. It is the city that my love and I raised our two amazing daughters who have become phenomenal women in their own right.”

During the Obama Foundation Summit, young civic leaders participated in a hands-on exchange of ideas empowering individuals to create positive change within their respective communities, according to an Obama Foundation release.

Former President Barack Obama shared how he began his political career as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago. Obama said while he didn’t lead the local movement, he served with church leaders to help build after-school programs, parks and helped combat environmental issues.

“I learned that ordinary people in local communities can do extraordinary things when they’re given a chance, when their voices are heard, when they come together and when they recognize themselves in each other,” said Obama.

The Former President continued to say that he took the lessons he learned as a community organizer with him as he traveled the world to serve young leaders.

“I would meet young people who were just like me – maybe a little better than me – who had asked themselves how could they make a difference, and [young people] who had started sharing, listening and gathering stories in their communities, and [who] had begun to mobilize, organize and make things happen,” Obama stated.

He said after his Presidential tenure, he had a strong desire to create a center for young leaders across the

globe and in local communities to meet, teach and learn from each other, no matter their background, race or religion.

“If we could create an architecture, a platform for those young people to thrive, to grow and to scale up all the amazing stuff that they were already doing locally, and not just to root themselves locally, but then be able to germinate and seed change all around the country and around the world, then there’s no problem we couldn’t solve,” Obama said. “There’s no aspiration that we might not reach.”
