LURIE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL PATIENTS GET HANDS-ON WITH BULLDOZERS, EXCAVATORS AND TELEHANDLERS

Chicago, Ill. – It was all smiles for the dozens of tykes Saturday attending the first annual Chicago Kids Dig hosted by the full-service, turnkey real estate development, master planning, architecture, engineering and construction firm Clayco, in partnership with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

The event was held at one of Clayco’s active jobsites, 170 N. Green St. in Fulton Market, and provided patients, their families, hospital staff, and friends of Lurie Children’s the opportunity to learn about and operate (with assistance) a variety of heavy machinery such as rollers, bulldozers, excavators, and telehandlers in a giant sand box, along with other interactive activities with support from professionals. This unique fundraising event promotes wellness for the children, while also sparking their imagination and an interest in the world of construction.

More than 100 children and their families were present on the jobsite throughout the day. Aside from being able to sit on and operate the machinery, the children were also able to learn more about construction and what is done each day on an active jobsite.

North, West and South sides of the city. Each year, between 300-400 students are serviced. Each student is matched with a mentor.

Chicago Lights’ takes a ho listic approach to helping young people. It also has enrichment programs that include dance, music, meditation and stress coping mechanisms. There also is a career development pro gram, where young people learn resume writing and how to dress for a job interview.

“Our mission is to provide resources to people throughout Chicago. With the tutor ing program, we provide services to students in under resourced neighborhoods,” said Mark Dennison, Tutoring and Summer Day Program Manager at Chicago Lights’.

Once a mentor is matched with a student, no matter what year the student is in school, the mentor continues with them through their educational journey. The goal is to ensure the student has a caring adult that starts with them in first grade and follows them through 12th grade. It makes the transition to the next grade smoother for the student because the mentor knows what to expect, from experience.

Scholarships are available for students who choose to go to private school, or students that need help purchasing books and supplies once they get to high school.

This year’s tutoring will take place as a hybrid model. Students can participate virtually, as well as in-person. During the pandemic, students were able to continue to

work with their mentors, no matter where they were, because they were virtual.

The Summer Day program is a summer camp where kids are provided with math and reading enrichment, as well as lunch. Students also get to choose between music, singing, dance or art. At the end of the program, the students perform and pres ent their creative art enrichment project to the rest of the camp.

“Summer Day helps with the summer learning loss that might occur with students. It was important this summer because we were trying to make up for the Zoom loss, students not getting one-to-one care from them doing virtual school, so we really wanted to focus on the education part of Summer Day,” Dennison said.

This year, 200 students participated in the Summer Day program. Each class had 10-15 students in each grade, which went from first grade to ninth grade. Keep ing it to smaller groups helped to ensure the students safety.

The Chicago Lights’ onboards volunteers and stu dents throughout the year. There is a constant need for mentors.

“Chicago Lights’ Tutoring is a wonderful program for our students, as well as our mentors, we do focus strongly on our students, but we do try to provide training for our volunteers, because they’re just as important as our students,” Dennison said.

Department Opens Application Period for Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in Funds to Increase the Number of School-Based Mental Health Providers in Schools Provided Through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

The U.S. Department of Education (Department) is releasing Notices Inviting Applications for two grant programs to increase ac cess to mental health services for students and young people, totaling $280 million, that were funded through the Bipartisan Safer Com munities Act (BSCA) and the Fiscal Year 2022 Omnibus Appropri ations. The BSCA provided historic funding to help meet President Biden’s goal of doubling the number of school-based mental health professionals and tackling the nation’s mental health crisis. This is the first of $1 billion in Bipartisan Safer Communities Act funds over the next five years that the Department of Education will award for this purpose.

The first grant program, School-Based Mental Health Services (SBMH), provides funding to schools to increase the number of credentialed school-based mental health professionals. The second program, the Mental Health Service Professional Demonstration (MHSP) grants, support districts in hiring additional school-based mental health service providers in high-need districts by boosting the mental health profession pipeline. This includes investing in innovative partnerships between school districts and institutions of higher education to prepare qualified school-based mental health services providers for employment in schools. These programs will increase the number of mental health service providers from diverse backgrounds or from the communities they serve, including ensuring access to services for children and youth who are English learners.

This announcement is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to addressing the nation’s mental health crisis by pro viding more resources and supports to help schools address students’ mental health needs. As part of that effort, in January, Secretary Car

dona laid out the department’s goals and vision for helping students recover from the pandemic, including by increasing access to social, emotional, and mental health supports for all students. Just recently, the Department announced the Stronger Connections Grant program, which are awards totaling nearly $1 billion to 56 states and territories through BSCA to help schools in high-need districts provide students with safe and supportive learning opportunities and environments that are critical for their success. At the beginning of the school year, the Department sent a letter with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Becerra to governors across the country to highlight federal resources available to states and schools to invest in mental health services for students. The Department also awarded $122 billion in ARP Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds to help schools reopen and recover, and experts indicate more than $2 billion has been directed to hire more school psychologists, counselors, and other mental health professionals in K-12 schools. With the help of these funds, as of July, compared with the pre-pan demic period, the number of school social workers is up 54% and the number of school counselors is up 22%.

Coinciding with this announcement from the Department of Education, today the Department of Health and Human Services is announcing awards of nearly $27 million to improve and expand mental health care for children. This funding will offer timely mental health support to children and adolescents by training pediatricians and other children’s health care providers in treating mental health conditions and by providing tele-consultation to bring mental health expert support directly to pediatric primary care providers. MCA Chicago Hosts Annual Visionary Luncheon Honoring Artist Lorna Simpson and Northern Trust

CHICAGO— The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) held its annual Visionary Luncheon, celebrating leadership in the arts. Over 400 guests—in cluding cultural, business, civic, and artistic leaders—were in attendance to learn more about the museum’s arts learning initiatives and to recognize this year’s honorees.

Artist Lorna Simpson was recognized as this year’s 2022 Visionary Artist. The MCA has enjoyed a long history with Simpson, organizing her first major survey exhibition, For the Sake of the Viewer in 1992. She also served as an Artist Trustee from 2017-2020 and has continued her work as an Emeritus Trustee. Over the last three decades, Lorna Simpson has estab lished herself as one of the most significant voices in American art examining how identity is never fixed. Her work, which is often rooted in photography, encourages viewers to challenge their assumptions about race and gender.

Northern Trust Chairman and Chief

Executive Officer Michael O’Grady ac cepted the 2022 Arts Philanthropy Award on Northern Trust’s behalf. Northern Trust has actively supported the MCA since 1975, and O’Grady was elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2018. He served as Chair until 2022, and serves as Vice-Chairman now.

“Supporting arts and cultural in stitutions is central to Northern Trust’s philanthropic commitment because we believe in the power of arts to enrich the world around us,” O’Grady said. “We are fortunate to have a partner like the MCA that provides incredible experiences to hundreds of thousands of people every year.”

Leadership for the event included Cari B. Sacks, MCA Board of Trustees Chair, King Harris, MCA Board of Trustees, Rachel Grund, MCA Women’s Board President, Marisa Murillo, MCA Women’s Board, and Cheryl Seder, MCA Women.

The MCA raised over $600,000 dollars at the event, all in support of the museum’s Learning programs. Key spon sors included Max Mara, Northern Trust, EY, and CGM Grosvenor.

The EAC awards fund four new regional EACs that each pro vide technical assistance to public schools and other agencies focused on addressing equity in their commu nity for students and the educators who support them related to race, sex, national origin, gender identity, disability, and religion. This fund ing also supports regional EACs that provide technical assistance and training at the request of school boards and other governmental agencies in the preparation, adoption, and implementation of plans for the desegregation of public schools. Each center provides training and technical assistance, upon request, in the areas of civil rights, equity, and school reform to school systems within a region comprised of 12-15 states. This assistance helps schools and communities ensure that equitable education opportunities are available and accessible for all children.

The MSAP awards support efforts to develop and revitalize magnet schools with academically challenging and innovative instruc tional approaches designed to bring together students from different social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. These 19 grantees will implement a variety of curricular focus areas in 62 schools offering programming in all five areas of STEAM learning, career develop ment, leadership skills, and language

immersion.

“Today, we’re investing in schools and communities that have shown a commitment to intentionally serving students and closing oppor tunity gaps based on race, place, and circumstance in America,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Every child has something to offer this country, and they deserve access to effective educators, inclu sive and supportive learning envi ronments, and innovative, engaging programs that unlock their potential and lead to success. These grant awards will help communities re imagine our schools through a more equitable lens and raise the bar for how we serve students who too often get left behind.”

Last January, Secretary Cardona laid out his vision for education in America by boldly addressing oppor tunity and achievement gaps in edu cation. That vision includes challeng ing states and districts to fix broken systems that may perpetuate inequi ties in our schools. When deciding on grantmaking, the Department centralizes it efforts around educa tional equity, including high-qual ity educational experiences for all students. This principle continues to guide discretionary grantmaking, especially for programs that support historically underserved communities and students such as reflected in the awards given to EACs and MSAPs.

MARION – To support the families of fallen first respond ers, State Senator Christopher Belt joined Comptroller Susana Mendoza, downstate police, fire officials and families in Marion Thursday to advocate for a new state initiative to adequately fund line-of-duty benefits.

“Public safety officers and first responders have done much to protect their communities, and it’s right by them that they are honored for their sacrifice,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “Family mem bers of fallen first responders deserve financial protection as a standard.”

In each fiscal year budget, the General Assembly appropri ates a line item for line-of-duty benefits, but in the event insuf ficient resources are available, Senate Bill 4229 and House Bill 5785 guarantees families receive their owed benefits. Senator Belt is the chief Senate sponsor of the initiative.

“This legislation is critical, as grieving families shouldn’t be forced to wait long peri ods of time to receive benefits after their loved one has passed away,” said Belt.

NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- Model Jean-Luc Joseph represented the Caribbean Island of Trinidad and Tobago, internationally at Milan and Paris fashion week - as he walked for luxury fashion labels Bottega Veneta and Balmain for the showcase of the SS23 season.

Born and raised in Sangre Grande, JeanLuc Joseph never thought of himself as a model but mainly as a photographer. A friend recom mended that he auditions for the 28Models mod el search in 2019- which took place in Trinidad. He was initially hesitant and did not make it to the search.

Joseph, however, was being noticed and scouted online by 28Models founder/Direc tor, Showin Bishop, and the rest was history. “I never thought that I had the, it factors those other models had, so I was quite surprised when Showin messaged me on Instagram to consider representation.” he said, “Now here I am walking for Major brands in Europe, and I am so thankful that he believed in my potential.”

28Models Director, Showin Bishop sees this as an opportunity with greater potential. “Currently we are setting up an office in Trinidad, where we will scout and develop more models for the international market, this is a serious business! Bishop noted.” He explained that this office will also be the regional office to service the Caribbean market.

Bishop additionally stated – “I feel great about this, this is what I am trying to do to help models get the exposure that they need. This is only the start of what I plan to do for Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean, I cannot wait for the other big things that are in the pipeline.”

Jean Luc is still coming to terms with his success - “Walking for such major luxury brands is almost an unreal and surreal experience; I’m still pinching myself!” Jean-Luc says. “Being able to be a part of history and walking for these mega fashion houses, is still crazy to me; I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities. I’m also grateful to have worked with such amazing teams: everyone is welcoming.

Mellon Foundation Awards $1 Million to the MCA to Support Major Latinx and Caribbean Initiative at the Museum

CHICAGO — The Museum of Con temporary Art (MCA) Chicago is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a substantial grant from the Mellon Foun dation. The $1 million contribution will allow the MCA to launch an institution wide Latinx and Caribbean art initiative to include the development of two exhi bitions and related scholarly publications, acquisitions to its permanent collection, continued curatorial research, communi ty partnerships and engagement, and the transition to a bilingual Spanish/English museum.

“The MCA is incredibly grateful to the Mellon Foundation for the generous fund ing and the endorsement of the museum’s important work with contemporary Latinx and Caribbean artists,’” said Madeleine Grynsztejn, Pritzker director of the MCA.

“We are committed to telling an inclusive art history, engaging with our community, and expanding the breadth and diversity of experience on the team.”

The MCA is developing two ambitious Latinx and Caribbean focused exhibitions, each with an accompanying publication. Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s–Today, will open this November 19 and remain on view through April 23. The exhibition is an innovative

rethinking of “Caribbean art,” focusing on art of the Caribbean diaspora and featuring an intergenerational group of thirty-sev en artists who live and work across the Americas and Europe. Later in 2023, the museum will feature Entre Horizontes: Art and Activism Between Puerto Rico and Chicago, a group exhibition that recogniz es and critically examines the aesthetic, social, and cultural affinities between the artistic genealogies of the Puerto Rican diaspora in the city of Chicago.

The opening of Forecast Form will be a milestone for the MCA’s transition to a bilingual Spanish/English museum, as subsequent exhibitions will be presented in both languages. As part of the museum’s commitment to welcome and serve the entire Chicago community, the bilingual initiative increases access to exhibitions and programs for the 18 percent of Chica goans who speak primarily Spanish as well as visitors from all over the world. The long-term strategy will go beyond simply translating text in the galleries and engage in a robust, multi-department effort to develop goals, processes, and evaluation plans for the coming years.

Further to these special exhibitions, the MCA is ramping up efforts to deepen its permanent collection acquisition of

additional works by Latinx and Caribbean artists and working to write a new history that heralds the artists who are traditional ly overlooked in the art historical canon. The museum’s transcultural approach to collecting considers cultural narratives on their own terms and strives to create exchanges and dialogues among these cultural contexts, with consideration to gender, race, and geography.

Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsz tejn and Carla Acevedo-Yates, Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator, will lead the Latinx and Caribbean initiative. Aceve do-Yates’s work focuses on the scholar ship, exhibition, and acquisition of art across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. She has curated over thirty exhibitions including presentations by Claudia Peña Salinas, Johanna Unzu eta, David Lamelas, and Beatriz Santiago Muñoz. She recently curated the MCA’s first fully bilingual exhibition, Carolina Caycedo: From the Bottom of the River. Grynsztejn and Acevedo-Yates will be supported by staff across the museum’s departments.

HIGH -ROI HOME

Upgrades to Improve Curb Appeal

(Family Features) Your home’s exterior can say a lot about you and your family while also making a first impression on guests (and potential buyers). Because of the impact curb appeal has on the amount prospective buyers are willing to spend on a home, it’s important for homeowners to look beyond simply choosing the right siding color and consider different siding materials and profiles, adding accents like stone veneer and researching other exterior upgrades that can both increase beauty and deliver performance over time.

In fact, exterior remodeling projects typically top the list of projects that add the most resale value to homes. Ac cording to Remodeling’s 2022 Cost vs. Value Report, nine of the top 10 projects delivering the best return on cost were exterior renovations.

If you’re looking to sell or just want to increase the overall value of your home, consider these high-ROI exterior upgrades from the experts at Westlake Royal Building Products that can im prove aesthetics and increase resale value.

Front Door

If replacing the front door isn’t necessary, adding a fresh coat of paint is a simple way to refresh your home’s exterior. You can take your “dated” door and make it modern again with a bold, on-trend color. Take it one step further by adding artistic house numbers, a new light fixture or a door knocker in an unexpected shape for inexpensive pops of style.

Vinyl Siding

Updating your home’s exterior with vinyl sid ing yields a 67.2% return upon sale, according to

the report. When considering new siding, look for high-quality, low-maintenance materials. Depend ing on where you live, insulated vinyl siding can add additional protection against the elements, as well as increased energy efficiency. While function is important, don’t be afraid to make bold choices with color, texture, different profiles and contrasting trim to make a true statement with

Shutters

Adding or replacing shutters is another easy way to add a bit of flair and can be a key finishing touch in creating the perfect exterior. With the po tential to play beautifully alongside windows and siding as well architectural style and surrounding landscaping, it’s important to make thoughtful choices and install them properly to ensure they look and function as designed.

Composite Decking

Another exterior remodeling project with a high ROI (62.1%), according to the report, is replac ing your home’s existing wood deck with composite decking. An option like Zuri Premium Decking combines the natural beauty and warmth of exotic hardwood with the durability and low-maintenance requirements of PVC (cellular poly vinyl chloride), which resists stains, scratches, fading and moisture, for a deck that will last for years with minimal upkeep.

Column Wraps

your home’s exterior.

For example, Westlake Royal Building Prod ucts offers a wide range of vinyl siding options in the latest shades, including adding five on-trend colors to its Royal Siding and Exterior Portfolio lines. Inspired by colors found in nature, the gray, blue-gray, brown and green tones reflect the latest trends in modern exterior home design. Both lines feature patented color protection technology to resist fading, which is especially important for darker shades.

Give your front porch an instant facelift by wrapping your existing columns with PVC wraps. This is an easy way to achieve a cleaner and more modern, updated look. Resistant to moisture, PVC column wraps prevent issues found in traditional wood columns, such as warping, rotting and insect damage. Available in a variety of ready-to-install styles, they can also be painted to complement your home’s exterior color palette.

CINESPACE STUDIOS TO EXPAND TV AND FILM PRODUCTION INFRASTRUCTURE IN TORONTO’S PORT LANDS

TORONTO, PRNewswire -- Cinespace Studios (Cine space), a global platform of production facilities, announced today the expansion of its Marine Terminal Studio Hub with the signing of a second long-term lease with PortsToronto. The lease comes at the conclu sion of an open, multi-year Request for Interest (RFI) process and a subsequent Request for Proposal process that commenced in 2019.

Located in Toronto’s Port Lands, the redevelopment of Marine Terminal 52 will create three production stages and support spaces totaling 130,000 square feet to welcome world-class productions in 2023. Global architecture, design and planning firm Gensler has been selected to design the studio.

Cinespace is the largest studio facility in Toronto with 1.3

million square feet of production space totaling 25 stages over three sites. This upcoming expansion in the heart of the city’s Studio District follows Cinespace’s successful development of Marine Terminal 51, which cur rently hosts Netflix’s production hub and was recently the home to Guillermo Del Toro’s Night mare Alley. The redevelopment of the site will create over 300 new jobs in Toronto and contin ues to support the infrastructure in Ontario that generates more than 48,000 jobs per year and $2.88B in direct spend.

“We are proud to continue our investment in Toronto that started over 30 years ago. It’s a privilege to partner with PortsToronto again and be selected to develop Terminal 52 into a second facility that will meet the increased demand for production infrastructure,” said Ashley Rice, President and Co-Managing Partner, Cinespace Studios.

“The Marine Terminal Studio Hub is an integral part of the Port Lands’ revitalization and its future as a creative center for the city and the province.”

“The film and television production industry in Toronto is important to the local economy, the creation of jobs, and the culture of our city. I am pleased that PortsToronto and Cine space will be expanding their already successful infrastructure in the Port Lands by creating a second studio space for produc tions to use. Toronto’s screen industries have experienced a pe riod of significant growth and investment over the last decade, and we know that there has been a real need for even more studio space. This project will not only help us attract more projects and more people to our city but as a result add more jobs which is good for our city and good for the economy,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory.

Cinespace Toronto is home to productions that include AMC Networks’ upcoming Beacon 23, WBTV’s Titans, MGM TV/Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Sony Pictures TV’s Accused, MGM’s Flint Strong, UCP’s The Umbrella Academy and Netflix’s upcoming collection of sinister stories Cabinet of Curiosities.

Cocolife.black Improves Black Maternal Health through Mombassador Movement

PHILADELPHIA, PRNewswire -- Coco Life Foundation (Cocolife.black), launched in 2019, is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Philadelphia, PA. Its goal is to eliminate racial disparities in care and improve maternal health outcomes for Black mothers nation wide. Essential services include doulas, mental health counseling, paternal health, professional development, infant care, and community education. The organization accomplishes its goal through Mombassadors, an intergenera tional team of community members. They help women to navigate the healthcare system and offer support to promote a healthy transition from pregnancy to postpartum. Recognizing the global magnitude of the problem, Coco life.black launched a Global Mombassador Movement.

Addressing the social determinants of health and race-related disparities can be daunting.

“Cocolife.black educates and empow ers Black communities on the importance of supporting Black mothers in having healthy pregnancies,” says the organization’s founder, Alexia Doumbouya.

She continues: “The Black maternal health crisis in the United States cannot be understated. CDC statistics show Black moth ers are three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white mothers, regardless of education or economic position. In addition, 50% of Black mothers are more

likely to deliver premature babies. Black babies are twice as likely to die after birth. The growing rate of race-related healthcare dispari ties has worsened. This grim situation calls for immediate action to save Black mothers and their babies and ensure the healthy life they deserve. Therefore, we engage dads, grand parents, cousins, dad-advocates, and others in supporting moms toward healthy deliver ies. We also have a national resource list of medical and mental health professionals, birth workers, and business strategists and make it available to Black mothers and their support networks. Our ultimate goal is to create a haven for Black moms where they can find trusted providers, dedicated community support, and access to critical resources from pregnancy to motherhood.”

The CDC and HHS speak of Cocolife. black’s exemplary performance since its founding. In addition, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Governor Tom Wolf issued proclamations to recognize its work. The American Psychological Association and Cayaba Care, providers of maternity support, are among its partners. Also, the organiza tion’s Global Mombassador Movement is attracting interest in other countries where Black maternal health and infant mortality are at risk. 5 Steps for Women to Reduce Their Risk of COPD

-- (Family Features) If you’re a woman who tries to stay healthy, you may exercise several times per week, watch what you eat and get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. But are you listening to your lungs?

Chronic obstructive pulmonary dis ease (COPD), a leading cause of disability and death in the United States, takes an especially heavy toll on women. You may think problems like shortness of breath, frequent coughs or wheezing are just signs of getting older, but it’s important to pay attention to these symptoms and discuss them with your doctor.

COPD is a serious lung disease that causes breathing problems and worsens over time. It has often been considered a man’s disease. Yet more U.S. women than men have been diagnosed with COPD in the past decade, and over the past 20 years more women have died from it, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Women tend to develop COPD earlier in life than men and are more likely to have severe symptoms and be hospitalized with the disease. The good news? According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk for COPD.

Don’t Smoke

You probably already know cigarette smoking is harmful

– but did you know that women may be more vulnerable to the effects of smoking? Women who smoke tend to get COPD at younger ages and with less cigarettes smoked than men. COPD is the leading cause of death among U.S. women smokers.

If you do smoke, it’s never too late to quit.

If you thought vaping was a healthy alternative to smoking, think again. Researchers are still learning about the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes, but they may contain as many, if not more, harmful chemicals than tobacco cigarettes.

Avoid Pollutants

Among people with COPD who have never smoked, most are women. Women may be more vulnerable to indoor and outdoor air pollution. Women’s smaller lungs and airways mean the same amount of inhaled pollutants may cause more damage.

Working in places like nail salons, hair salons or dry cleaners can expose you to harmful chemi cals. If you’re exposed to chemical fumes at your job, talk to your employer about ways to limit exposure. Better ventilation and wearing a mask can help.

Stay Current on Vaccines

People at risk for COPD are more likely to have serious problems resulting from some vaccine-preventable diseases. Ask a health care provider about getting vaccinated against the flu, pneumococcal disease and COVID-19.

Talk to Your Doctor About COPD

Women with COPD tend to be diagnosed later than men when the disease is more severe and treat ments are less effective. If you think you could be at risk, or you are having symptoms, bring it up with your health care provider. Treatment can ease symptoms and improve your ability to exercise.
