2 NEWS briefly CHICAGO HOSPITALITY & BUSINESS LEADERS RALLY TO REIGNITE TRAVEL TO CITY AND REGION CHICAGO – The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) joined hospitality and business leaders from Choose Chicago, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, Oxford Hotels and Resorts and LondonHouse Chicago on Wednesday, July 13, to discuss reigniting travel and tourism to the Chicago area.

Due to pandemic-related travel reductions in 2020 and 2021, Illinois and Chicago hotels lost more than $5.4 billion in room revenue, resulting in a drop of more than $1 billion in state and local tax revenue.

Travel is booming this summer, however, with nearly seven in ten Americans (69%) planning to travel this summer and 60% saying they are likely to take more vacations this year compared to 2020-21, according to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult and commissioned by AHLA. Another national survey shows that 77% of business travelers say it is more important than ever to bring back business travel. The same survey showed nearly two-thirds of business travelers said increased reliance on virtual work during the pandemic negatively impacted both productivity (64%) and workplace culture (65%).

Speakers at the event discussed recent data and opinion research underscoring optimism for reigniting travel to the Chicago region as well as new travel trends and opportunities to attract more travelers to the area.

The Wednesday, July 13, event is one in a series of “Reigniting Travel” events AHLA is hosting in major cities across the nation in conjunction with its Hospitality is Working campaign.

GOVERNOR PRITZKER APPOINTS HEALTH POLICY EXPERT DR. SAMEER VOHRA TO LEAD ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH SPRINGFIELD — Governor JB Pritzker has appointed Dr. Sameer Vohra, a distinguished pediatrician and healthcare policy expert, to lead the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) beginning August 1. Dr. Vohra, the Founding Chair of the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine’s (SIU-SOM) Department of Population Science and Policy, follows Dr. Ngozi Ezike, who stepped down in March after leading IDPH and the State of Illinois through the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Vohra is a general pediatrician who holds degrees in law and public policy. He is a cross-disciplinary leader in state and national health policy formulation, and his recent focus has been on improving health outcomes in Central and Southern Illinois. An Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Public Health, Medical Humanities, and Law at SIU-SOM, he currently serves the State of Illinois as the Interim Chair of the Children’s Mental Health Partnership.

He completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Chicago and earned a Master of Arts in public policy from the University of Chicago. He holds a medical doctorate from SIU-SOM; a juris doctorate from SIU School of Law graduating first in his class; and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and science in human culture with honors from Northwestern University.

Dr. Vohra also serves on IDPH’s Illinois State Board of Health, the Illinois Medicaid Advisory Committee, the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council, and recently completed a term on the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund Steering Committee. He has previously served on national committees for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the American Medical Association, and on the Board of Trustees for the Illinois State Medical Society and Chicago Medical Society.

The Women’s Health Protection Act, which I was proud to help pass for a second time, would enshrine the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law to ensure access to reproductive health care, including abortion care, for women in every state. I was also proud to vote for the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, which would protect women who exercise their constitutional right to travel across state lines to seek reproductive health care.

Rep. Casten Votes for Active Shooter Alert Act Rep. Casten voted for legislation to quickly warn Illinois communities of a nearby active shooter. The Active Shooter Alert Act will establish a program similar to the AMBER Alert system, allowing law enforcement to effectively and efficiently alert the public during a shooting.

Secured by the Democratic House Majority, today’s passage follows House Republicans’ inexplicable attempt to obstruct this life-saving legislation last month.

Said Rep. Casten. “Law enforcement shouldn’t be relying on social media to alert the public about dangerous situations. Yesterday, I voted for The Active Shooter Alert Act to give departments the technology to send out AMBER Alert-like messages in the case of active shooter incidents. This bill will help law enforcement keep Illinoisans safe and informed during active shooter incidents, as well as make sure that communities have the resources, training and strategies they need to save lives. As we work to enact this urgently needed legislation, House Democrats will continue fighting to overcome Republican obstruction and bring our nation’s gun violence epidemic to an end.”

Since 2009, communities across the nation have been torn apart by nearly 300 mass shootings – attacks that have killed more than 1,500 people and wounded 1,000 more.

Among the most urgent challenges during an active shooter incident is the need to prevent additional victims from unknowingly walking into the line of fire.

The Active Shooter Alert Act will support these life-saving efforts by establishing an Active Shooter Alert Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Justice. The Coordinator will offer state and local law enforcement officials voluntary access to training, technical support and advice for improving or implementing active shooter alert systems.

These resources include guidance on the most effective alert content, delivery strategies and recommendations such as silencing alerts in the immediate vicinity of a shooter.

This legislation is strongly supported by major law enforcement organizations, including the National Sherriff’s Association, Major Cities Chiefs Associations, National Association of Police Organizations, Fraternal Order of Police, National Police Foundation and National District Attorneys Association.

Last month, Rep. Casten voted for the the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the country’s first major gun violence prevention legislation in nearly three decades.

Biden bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Sandra Lindsay, RN, DHSc, for becoming the first American to receive an approved Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine and her continued advocacy for public health equity.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made exceptionally meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace and cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Sixteen others received the high honor with Dr. Lindsay in recognition of their accomplishments and Business Wire advocacy to drive change. Dr. Lindsay is the first Jamaican-born Jamaican American to receive the medal.

During the height of the pandemic she poured her heart into helping patients fight for their lives and to keep her fellow nurses safe. And when the time came, she was the first American to become fully vaccinated outside of clinical trials,” President Joe Biden said.

Among the recipients is fellow Long Islander, Father Alexander Karloutsos, pastor of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons in Southampton, who has counseled several U.S. presidents.

Historic Summit on BlackDoctor. org Focused on Men’s Health Reaches Over 80K CHICAGO, PRNewswire -BlackDoctor.org (BDO) in partnership with the Rodham Institute at George Washington University broadcasted a historical Men’s Health Summit (MHS). This virtual summit was held in honor of the observance of Men’s Health Awareness Month and reached over 80K. As Dr. Griggs stated, “If you want your soldiers to fight, you have to give them the right fuel to be in the battle.” Additionally, the partnership with Cedars-Sinai Hospital resumed with a pancreatic cancer panel. In addition to Cedar-Sinai, BDO partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) on two panels discussing multiple myeloma and clinical trials, respectively. This summit serves as the

Bikes & Music Announces Summer “Fun-Raiser!” Group Ride and Cookout to Follow Online Fundraising Drive Bikes & Music, a Chicagoland 50 (s) (3) nonprofit corporation, has a goal to raise $25,000 by August 20,2022. The funds are needed for the repair of donated bicycles, and for the purchase of new bike helmets and locks, The bikes and equipment will be provided to children and adults in need.

Since the start of 2022, Bikes & Music has collected over 100 bicycles throughout Chicagoland. “We received a terrific response to our spring bike drive,” says Bikes & Music co-founder Ryan Gable. “We have supported organizations that are doing amazing work, like Home of the Sparrow and RefugeeOne. We’ve supplied these refurbished bikes along with helmets and locks to children and some adults that need bikes for fun for but also as a mode of transportation to work and school!”

The challenge now and mission of the fundraiser is to cover the tune-ups and repairs for these bikes. When you add in the cost of helmets and locks, it takes about $100 to get each bike ready to go an into the hands of someone that desperately wants one.

Gable explains that repairing used bicycles keeps them out of landfills. “We could almost buy new bikes for what repairs and parts cost sometimes. But we are dedicated to doing the right things for the planet by recycling bikes that just need a little love. We’re fortunate to have support from two local bike shops (Crank Revolution in Hoffman Estates and Never-Ending Cycles in Streamwood) for the safety checks, maintenance and repairs.

They do everything they can to keep our costs to a minimum.”

CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness Wins National Award for Leadership in Providing Comprehensive Student Services agriculture lab that provides a training space to equip teachers and school garden teams in various agriculture processes that can be used in classrooms and gardens. Over 200 schools have Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSA) to enhance safe and supportive school environments, and 130 schools participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, bringing hands-on nutrition education to thousands of students each year. In addition, OSHW experts provide programming and technical assistance to schools around mental health, sexual health education, LGBTQ+ support, physical activity, school gardens, direct health services, and enrollment in and utilization of public health benefits such as Medicaid and SNAP. Each of the 15 community-based organizations have hired 14 teens for 8 weeks, with each teen being paid $15 an hour. During the eight weeks of employment, the planning team promotes youth-focused opportunities and plans and hosts a Summer Kickback event every Friday between 5 and 9 p.m. The first event will be Friday, July 8, and will conclude on Friday, August 12. Each community will also have one “mothership” event this summer, an enhanced version of a kickback that will include a smoothie bar, e-gaming, a DJ and more activities with support from the Chicago Park District.

This summer, the City will also host ten supplemental Low-Key Kickbacks: Saturday Edition, on Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m. The LowKey series will bring food, entertainment, and various activities to the South and West sides, starting July 23 at Grand Crossing Park. Entertainment will include prominent Chicago DJs, steppers and breakers, sporting events, a selfie station, art activations, and free COVID-19 vaccination sites. Reps. Davis, Gomez, Peters, & Panetta Introduce Bill to Help Millions of Struggling Renters via Innovative Tax Credit WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA), and Rep. Jimmy Panetta (DCA) introduced innovative legislation to help millions of cost-burdened renters at a time when housing costs are skyrocketing as the gap between incomes and housing costs grows. The Rent Relief Act creates a new tax credit for renters that would cover a percentage of the difference between 30 percent of their adjusted gross income and the actual cost of rent and utilities, capping the benefit at 100% of Small Area Fair Market Rent. The bill makes the credit available to most working families by allowing the credit for families earning up to $100,000. Further, it delivers help when needed with monthly payments to pay bills when they are due, building on the successful advanced Child Tax Credit that helped tens of millions escape poverty.

Stable housing is foundational for the social, emotional, and economic well-being of individuals and families.

Nationally, 8 million of the lowest-income renters spend at least half of their income on rent, leaving them little remaining to cover other basic needs for food, clothing, and health care. Despite the profound need, only 1 in 4 eligible households receives any help, and some households spend years on waitlists due to inadequate funding. Creating a new renters’ tax credit – along with expanding targeted investments to increase supply – can help end America’s housing crisis.

“Every day thousands of people in Chicago struggle to pay rent,” said Rep. Davis.

“The Rent Relief Act will help renters in a real, life-changing way so that they can better care for their families without fear of eviction or making the horrible choice between a roof over their heads or medicine and food for children.
