The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant drops in enrollment, academic performance and the likelihood of graduating high school on time, according to the latest school report card released recently by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The report card is an annual report that tracks how the state, and each school and district, are progressing on a wide range of educational goals.

But the report also showed that more Illinois students than ever are preparing for college and careers by taking dual credit, Advanced Placement and career and technical education, or CTE courses, while schools themselves are doing a better job of retaining veteran teachers.

lived and learned through unthinkable obstacles, but loss is not the whole story. Illinois’ schools also stepped up the rigor of high school course work, ensured students still graduated and earned early college credit along the way.”

According to the report, which covers the 2020-2021 academic year, total enrollment in Pre-K-12 schools fell 3.6 percent from the prior year, or by about 70,000 students, to just under 1.89 million. State officials said recent trends would have predicted a 1.1 percent decline, meaning the additional 2.5 percent can be attributed to the pandemic.

The biggest enrollment declines were in Pre-K and kindergarten, with pre-K enrollment dropping 17 percent and kindergarten enrollment dropping 8 percent.

The report also shows a disturbing increase in chronic absenteeism since the pandemic began. More than one in five students, or 22.8 percent, missed 10 percent or more of all school days in the year. That’s up from 13.4 percent in 2019, the most recent full pre-pandemic year.

The increase in absenteeism was especially notable among English learners, Black and Hispanic students.

Officials cautioned, however, that the 2021 figures might not be reliable because of the number of students who were engaged in remote learning, where taking accurate attendance counts can be more challenging.

“We know from national studies from the (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) that school districts serving primarily Black and Hispanic students provided the least access to in-person learning last year,” Brenda Dixon, ISBE’s research and evaluation officer, said during a briefing on the report. “We suspect that less access to in-person learning contributed to lower engagement among Black and Hispanic students.”

The report card also showed declines in student performance on standardized tests, although those numbers are still preliminary because schools were given the option of administering those tests this fall due to the number of buildings that were still not fully open in the spring. Full results will be published next spring.

All students in grades 3-8 take what’s called the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, or IAR, which covers English language arts and math proficiency. High school students are tested in 11th grade by taking www.citizennewspapergroup.com

the SAT exam.

The preliminary results showed fewer students meeting grade-level standards compared to 2019, especially among younger students who may have struggled more to engage in remote learning, Dixon said.

The number of students meeting grade-level standards dropped 17.8 percent in math and 16.6 percent in English language arts, with the biggest declines seen among English language learners and low-income students.

The rate of ninth-grade students who were on track to graduate dropped 5.1 percent from 2019, reflecting an increase in students receiving failing grades, ISBE said.

Students are identified as on track if they have earned at least five full-year course credits and have received no more than one semester of an “F” grade in a core subject.

Agency officials said ninth-grade students who are on track are almost four times more likely to graduate than those who are not on track, and one of the most effective ways to increase graduation rates is through active, early intervention by identifying ninth-graders who are at risk and providing them with

tutoring, additional instruction and other individualized services.

“The Illinois State Board of Education is encouraging schools to watch this cohort closely and to utilize federal pandemic relief funds for research-based interventions, especially for current ninth- and 10th-graders who are not on track for graduation,” Ayala said during the briefing. “We are also launching a $25 million high-impact tutoring program early this coming year to provide these types of individualized services to students across the education continuum.”

Ayala also noted that Illinois has received nearly $8 billion in federal pandemic relief funding to address the gaps that resulted from remote learning. Ninety percent of that money was paid directly to school districts that will decide locally how to spend it, but ISBE has earmarked the remaining 10 percent for things like bolstering special education services, closing the digital divide, and mental health services for students and educators.

One area of academic performance that did improve was in college and career preparation. The report card showed the number of students taking courses for both high school and college credit grew 12 percent from the prior year, to 72,490. Advanced Placement enrollment grew 1.6 percent, to 129,574, and CTE enrollment inched up a fraction of a percentage point to 287,191.

Officials attributed that to increased funding in recent years for programs that cover the cost of taking AP exams for low-income students as well as for CTE education overall.

The state’s overall teacher retention rate – the three-year average of the percentage of full-time teachers returning to the same school from the previous year – also rose more than a percentage point, to 87.1 percent, although retention rate was lower among Black teachers.

Southland College Prep Charter High School Hosts Free Vaccination Clinic for Kids 5-11 Saturday ‘Family Vaccination’ Clinics Added to Initiative RICHTON PARK, ILL. — Southland College Prep Charter High School will host Saturday vaccination clinics for children 5 to 11, providing an opportunity for an entire family to be vaccinated, beginning November 13, 2021.

Southland College Prep began last summer to host its Wednesday free vaccination clinics to battle COVID-19 at the district office location, 4601 Sauk Trail, Richton Park, Illinois.

The Saturday clinics focus on children and their families.

A pediatrician will partner with the existing clinic staff to answer parents’ questions and address concerns.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized shots for children 5 to 11 and Tuesday the Center for Disease Control and Prevention unanimously decided the Pfizer vaccine is ready for elementary school children, prompt-

ing Southland to expand “opportunities for whole families” to get vaccinated at no cost.

Dr. Blondean Y. Davis, CEO of Southland College Prep Charter High School and superintendent of Matteson School District 162 has been at the forefront of efforts to reach community members since last summer, hosting weekly clinics and spreading the word through ads, publicity and social media.

“Vaccines are working,” said Dr. Davis. “I think it’s the reason positivity rates are going down. We anticipate keeping the clinic open until the end of the school year.”

While the downturn in COVID cases has been encouraging, experts are concerned about the coming holiday months when travel begins anew and more indoor events are scheduled during the winter months.

While parents are being encouraged to

consider the vaccinations, they are not being ordered to comply, nor worry about any mandates.

“The decision is totally the parents’ choice,” said Dr. Davis. “But we will be offering vaccination clinic appointments for parents to ask questions.”

The clinic will continue to be conducted by the staff of Emerge Med Staffing, led by its CEO Richard Watson, M.D., FACEP. “We have done magnificently well at in-person education and Dr. Watson is going to team with a pediatrician in order to answer parents’ questions,” said Dr. Davis. “All children ages 5 and over are welcome.”

Wednesday free clinics at Southland will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Saturday clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

An honors graduate of Howard University Medical School and the first Black chief res-

ident physician at the University of Chicago Hospital, Dr. Watson is board certified in emergency medicine and a fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians.

He heads the Hazel Crest, Illinois-based medical organization, which has a dedicated COVID center where tests for anti-bodies for protection from the virus, tests for the virus and vaccine inoculations are available.

Pre-registration for the Southland College Prep vaccination clinic at https://www. emergerapidtests.com is encouraged, however, walk-ins are welcome.

Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship exhibition Shifting Boundaries opens Nov. 13

Riveting works on view by five Native artists selected for prestigious Fellowship INDIANAPOLIS — Visitors will experience compelling, thought-provoking works of contemporary Native art in the new exhibition Shifting Boundaries, open at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art from Nov. 13 to Feb. 6.

Five contemporary artists who are Native American or First Nations were chosen for the prestigious 2021 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship. Shifting Boundaries features examples of the Fellows’ work that include innovative paintings, prints, mixed media and installations.

The website contemporaryartfellowship.eiteljorg.org is a hub of information about the Fellows and their art, as well as a look back at more than two decades of the Fellowship program. Public events on the exhibition’s opening weekend and during its run will appeal both to longtime aficionados of contemporary Native art as well as those new to the genre.

Selected by a panel of three art experts, the 2021 Eiteljorg Fellows include: Invited artist Anita Fields (Osage / Muscogee), of Stillwater, Oklahoma, who is nationally recognized for her ceramic art and mixed media works.

One of her ceramic pieces, Opposites Attract, currently is on view in another exhibition, Powerful Women II: Contemporary Art from the Eiteljorg Collection. The invited artist is selected for the Fellowship based on

a lifetime of work.

Sonny Assu (Ligwilda’xw of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations) of Campbell River, British Columbia, a painter, printmaker and installation artist.

Catherine Blackburn (English River Dene First Nation) of Thornhill, British Columbia, a multi-disciplinary artist, designer and jeweler whose work includes fashion, installation and mixed media.

Athena LaTocha (Húnjkpaphˇa Lakota / Keweenaw Bay Ojibwe) of Peekskill, N.Y., who creates large bold paintings inspired by or containing parts of landscapes Steven Yazzie (Diné / Laguna Pueblo) of Denver, a painter who also creates video and installations, and has received numerous awards.

Every other year since 1999, the Eiteljorg Fellowship has provided grants to a new class of five artists to support their continuing efforts in the contemporary art field. Each Fellow receives a $25,000 unrestricted grant, and the museum purchases more than $100,000 in art from the Fellows to add to its collection of contemporary Native art, considered one of the best such collections in the world.

“For 22 years, the Eiteljorg Fellowship has helped bring Native contemporary art to the forefront, casting a spotlight on the works of leading Native American and First Nations artists. The 2021 class of Eitel-

COVID-19 Undermine Women’s Retirement Security the pandemic and their financial stress.

Forty-two percent of women workers experienced one or more impacts to their employment as a result of the pandemic, including reduced work hours (28 percent), reduced salaries (13 percent), furloughs (9 percent), layoffs (8 percent), and/or early retirement (3 percent).

Six in 10 made adjustments due to pandemic-related financial strain (60 percent), such as reducing day-to-day expenses (35 percent), dipping into savings accounts (25 percent), and/or accumulating new credit card debt (17 percent).

Approximately one in eight women skipped health care (13 percent), borrowed money from others (13 percent), and reduced or stopped contributing to retirement accounts (12 percent).

Sixty-two percent cite paying off some form of debt as a financial priority. Other financial priorities include saving for retirement (56

percent), building emergency savings (46 percent), and just getting by to cover basic living expenses (32 percent).

Almost four in 10 say they are having trouble making ends meet (38 percent) — and 42 percent often feel anxious and depressed.

Emergency savings are low.

Women have only $4,000 (median) in emergency savings. Emergency savings increase with age: Generation Z women have saved $800, Millennials have saved $2,000, Generation X has saved $5,000, and Baby Boomers have saved $7,000 (medians).

Women’s Retirement Expectations, Preparations, and Insecurity “Amid the formidable challeng-

es and setbacks of the pandemic, women continue to have big dreams and are focused on their future retirement. However, despite their efforts, many are not saving enough to be able to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle in retirement,” Collinson said. The survey findings illustrate women workers’ expectations and risks.

Traveling is the most often cited retirement dream among women workers (66 percent), followed by spending more time with family and friends (60 percent), and pursuing hobbies (46 percent). For some, retirement dreams include working (32 percent), volunteering (28 percent), and taking care of their grandchildren (21 percent).

More than three in four are

saving for retirement (77 percent) through employer-sponsored plans (e.g., 401(k) or similar plans) and/ or outside the workplace (e.g., in IRAs, mutual funds, or bank account). Among those who are saving, women started saving at age 28 (median).

Some are taking loans and early withdrawals from retirement accounts. Twenty-seven percent of women have taken a loan, early withdrawal, and/or hardship withdrawal from their 401(k) or similar plan or IRA at some point, including 19 percent who have taken a loan and 19 percent who have taken an early and/or hardship withdrawal.

Many expect their primary source of retirement income to be self-funded savings from 401(k)/403(b)/IRAs and or other savings and investments (47 percent). Twenty-seven percent of women workers expect to rely primarily on Social Security and 15 percent on income from working.

Household retirement savings are alarmingly low. Women workers have saved only $57,000 (estimated median) in all household retirement accounts. Retirement savings increase with age: Generation Z women have saved $5,000, Millennials have saved $42,000, Generation X has saved $66,000, and Baby Boomers have saved $134,000 (estimated medians).

Fifty-five percent expect to work past age 65 or do not plan to retire – and 53 percent plan to continue working at least part-time in retirement. Eighty-three percent of these women workers cite financial reasons for planning to do so, while almost as many (77 percent) cite healthy aging-related reasons.

Less than one in five are “very” confident that they will be able to fully retire with a comfortable lifestyle (18 percent). Moreover, 18 percent of women workers indicate their retirement confidence has declined as a result of the pandemic.

NFT for Dummies by Crocs League founder Doctor Troller LONDON PRNewswire -- There has been an explosion in the sales of NFTs in the past year. One digital artist called Beeple sold his NFT artwork called Opus for $69 million at Christies. Another artist called Pak created a collection of NFT Cubes which sold out at Sothebys for $17m, and last week UK based artist Doctor Troller’s first drop of Crocs League NFTs netted over $500,000 in a couple of hours.

But what exactly is an NFT? OK, let’s start with the basics. NFT stands for non-fungible token.

OK, I’m sure you get the token bit, but non-fungible?

Non-fungible means it’s unique, one of a kind, and cannot be replaced with something else.

You’ve heard of Bitcoin, right?

Well Bitcoin is fungible. One Bitcoin is exactly the same as another, you could trade any Bitcoin for another, they won’t be any different.

An NFT however, is a one-of-a-kind trading card. If you swap or sell it for another NFT you will have something completely different.

So how exactly do NFTs work?

Most NFTs are part of the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Most purchases and trades of NFTs are done in ETH. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, but the ETH blockchain also supports these NFTs, and stores extra information which is why most NFT transactions are done in Etherium.

So what is worth buying in NFTs? NFTs can be pretty much anything collectable that can be digitized. It could be music, videos, the world’s first Tweet (it sold for $2.9m), but a lot of the current NFT excitement is around digital art.

The reason for this excitement is that NFTs

are designed to give you something that can’t be copied: ownership of the artwork. To explain this in terms of physical art collecting, anyone can buy a Van Gogh print, but only one person can own the original. And with blockchain technology, you can easily see that the artwork is the genuine version and not a fake.

OK, how does that work?

All transactions of the artwork are recorded and stored on the blockchain, this gives the NFT artwork, what art dealers call “provenance”, you can see exactly who has owned the artwork right the way back to the original minting by the artist.

Right, I’m interested, but which NFTs are worth collecting?

Well, that’s the $69m question, literally.

So rarity of NFTs is important. If an artist releases an edition of a million NFTs they’re not exactly rare, and so therefore this should be reflected in the price.

Have a look on community sites to see what prices these NFTs are going for, do your research. Discord is a good site to check on prices and sales for NFTs. Look and see what prices those NFTs have sold for today, not last week.

This is a fast moving market, fortunes can be made quickly…and lost quickly. You’ve got to know the right time to get in, and get out.

What about security, I’ve heard about people being robbed online?

It’s really important to have strong security. Have a good secure wallet, something like Metamask, but also it’s good to double down with a physical wallet as well, so that if your computer is hacked you’re not going to lose everything when you’re asleep.
