Donald Byrd Returns to Dance Center After 24 Years with Spectrum Dance Theater Bessie Award-winning and Tony-nominated choreographer Donald Byrd returns to Chicago with his company Spectrum Dance Theater, presented by the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago January 31–February 2, 2019 at the Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.

In his first Chicago appearance since Donald Byrd/ The Group performed during the Dance Center’s 1994–95 season, Byrd brings his Rambunctious Iteration #3 – The Immigrants, comprising five works featuring the music of American composers who are immigrants from non-European countries that America has historically been at odds with or are part of the current debate on immigration: Tania León (Cuba), Max Lifchitz (Mexico), Yevgeniy Sharlat (Russia), Tan Dun (China) and Gity Razaz (Iran). Rambunctious Iteration #3 – The Immigrants seeks to expose the rich artistic and cultural contributions to the American landscape of this particular group of immigrant artists.

SPECTRUM DANCE THEATER Spectrum Dance Theater (SDT) was founded in 1982 to bring dance of the highest merit to a diverse audience composed of people from different social, cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. Its principal objective is to make the art form of dance accessible through contemporary dance performances and high-quality training in a variety of dance styles.

Under Donald Byrd’s visionary artistic leadership since

2002, the organization has embarked on an exhilarating transformation that has attracted world-class dancers, produced some of the most ambitious works in contemporary dance and generated local and national praise.

RESIDENCY ACTIVITIES A post-performance conversation with the artists takes place Thursday, January 31. A pre-performance talk with Donald Byrd takes place Friday, February 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Sherwood Community Music School’s Recital Hall, 1312 S. Michigan Ave. (next door to the Dance Center). Additional residency activities with community partners and Columbia College Chicago students take place throughout the week leading up to the performance weekend.

The Dance Center presents Spectrum Dance Theater Thursday–Saturday, January 31–February 2, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. at the Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue, Chicago.

Migrants travel in groups for a simple reason: safety nevertheless spread the message.

It is reasonable for Americans to have security concerns about immigration. But as a scholar of forced migration, I believe it’s also important to consider why migrants travel in groups: their own safety.

A caravan of Central American migrants traveling to through Mexico to the United States to seek asylum is about halfway through its journey.

The caravan began on Oct. 13 in Honduras with 200 people. As it has moved through Honduras, Guatemala and now Mexico, its ranks have grown to over 7,000, according to an estimate by the International Organization of Migration.

The migrants have been joined by representatives from humanitarian organizations like the Mexican Red Cross providing medical assistance and human rights groups that monitor the situation.

Journalists are there, too, and their reporting has caught the attention of President Donald Trump.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS The Central Americans in the caravan, like hundreds of thousands of people who flee the region each year, are escaping extreme violence, lack of economic opportunity and growing environmental problems, including drought and floods, back home.

Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico have some of the world’s highest murder rates. According to Doctors Without Borders, which provides medical care in crisis zones, 68 percent of the migrants and refugees it surveyed in Mexico had experienced violence. Nearly

one-third of women were sexually abused.

Whether crossing Central America, the Sahara desert or the mountains of Afghanistan, migrants are regularly extorted by criminals, militias and corrupt immigration officials who know migrants make easy targets: They carry cash but not weapons.

Large groups increase migrants’ chance of safe passage, and they provide some sense of community and solidarity on the journey, as migrants themselves report.

PUBLICIZING THE DANGERS THEY FLEE Large groups of migrants also attract media coverage. As journalists write about why people are on the move, they shed light on Central America’s many troubles.

Yet headlines about huge migrant caravans may misrep-

resent trends at the U.S.-Mexico border, where migration is actually decreasing.

While the number of Central American families and children seeking asylum in the U.S. has increased in the past two years, Mexican economic migrants are crossing the border at historically low levels.

And while most migrant caravan members hope to seek asylum in the U.S., recent history shows many will stay in Mexico.

In response to Trump’s immigration crackdown, Mexican president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador has promised to welcome Central American refugees — and try to keep them safe.

CRANBERRY-BEET BUNDT CAKE WITH ORANGE-WALNUT GLAZE Prep time: 50 minutes Cook time: 45 minutes Servings: 16 1 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie's Sliced Pickled Beets, drained 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar, divided 1 1/4 cups dried sweetened cranberries 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 4 large eggs, room temperature 1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1 orange, zest only, finely grated 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 cup buttermilk

Orange-Walnut Glaze: 2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted 1 orange, zest only, finely grated 1/4 cup orange juice, plus additional (optional) 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 cup finely chopped walnuts Heat oven to 350 F. Butter and lightly flour fluted 10-inch Bundt pan.

In food processor, puree beets and 1 cup sugar until smooth, about 30 seconds, scraping down sides of bowl once.

In small bowl, cover cranberries with hot water.

In medium mixing bowl, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg.

In large mixing bowl using electric mixer on medium-high, beat remaining sugar, eggs, butter and oil2-3 minutes until light and smooth. Blend

in beet puree. Add orange zest and vanilla; mix until blended. Add half of flour mixture; beat on low until smooth. Add buttermilk; beat on low until smooth then add remaining flour mixture, beating until blended. Drain cranberries; fold into batter.

Turn batter into prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake on center rack 45-50 minutes. When done, cake will pull away from sides of pan and toothpick, inserted into center will come out clean.

Cool 15 minutes then invert cake onto rack.

To make Orange-Walnut Glaze: In large mixing bowl, combine sugar and orange zest. Add orange juice; whisk until smooth. Whisk in butter. Add additional juice, if necessary.

Spoon glaze over cake while still warm. Sprinkle with walnuts.

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Servings: 6 1 tablespoon, plus 1 teaspoon, olive oil 3/4 pound extra-lean ground turkey breast 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) 1 can (15 ounces) READ German Potato Salad 1/2 cup light sour cream 2 cups frozen, thawed or canned mixed vegetables, drained nonstick cooking spray 1/2 cup bread crumbs Heat oven to 350 F. In large, nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil.

Add turkey, thyme, garlic powder, pepper and salt, if desired. Cook 5-7 minutes, until cooked through, stirring occasionally and breaking turkey into large crumbles.

Stir in potato salad and sour cream. Add vegetables; stir to combine. Spray 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Spoon in casserole mixture.

Toss together bread crumbs and remaining oil. Sprinkle over casserole. Bake 30 minutes, or until bubbly and heated through.

Substitution: Leftover chopped turkey (about 1 1/2 cups) can be cooked 2-3 minutes in skillet in place of ground turkey.

PSC Speech Team Brings Home Accolades from Tournament Prairie State College (PSC) students recently participated in a speech tournament at Moraine Valley Community College.

The team placed seventh overall, and several team members brought home individual awards.

Elijah Leake of Flossmoor placed fourth in Communication Analysis. Chelsea Boyde of Tinley Park placed fifth in Informative Speech.

Julia Porco of Matteson placed fifth in Speech to Entertain.

Additional team members competing were Cahron Cross of Homewood, Destiny Cunningham of Sauk Village and Esmeralda Manzo of Steger.

After the competition, team members said that the tournament was a fun learning experience, and that they look forward to refining their skills for the next tournament.

Cook County in Substantial Compliance of Hiring Practices, Ending Federal Oversight Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced recently that Cook County has been found in compliance with the Shakman Consent Decree and will be released from federal oversight.

At a hearing in U.S. District Court, Judge Sidney I. Schenkier granted the parties joint motion for substantial compliance and has agreed to dismiss the County from the Shakman v. The County of Cook, et al. litigation.

“Today marks a significant moment in Cook County’s history. When I took office, I made clear that we needed to reform and reshape Cook County government and that included professionalizing the County’s employment practices in an accountable and transparent way,” Preckwinkle said. “We have proven that we are using a fair employment process and hiring qualified candidates to provide the crucial services expected by those who live and work in Cook County. I’m grateful to those who have made this momentous accomplishment possible.”

In 1972, Cook County entered into a consent decree that prohibited the County

from politically discriminating against County employees. In 1994, the County entered into a second consent decree incorporating the 1972 consent decree’s prohibitions and extending those prohibitions to include the County’s hiring practices of new employees.

In 2006, the Plaintiffs alleged past violations of the consent decrees and the County and Plaintiffs entered into a supplemental relief order (SRO). The SRO was ultimately approved by the Court on February 2, 2007, and resulted in the appointment of a federal compliance administrator to oversee the County’s compliance.

“We have worked diligently to foster a culture of professionalism and accountability and have left behind bad practices of the past,” Preckwinkle said. “Our reforms, and the recognition of those reforms, will save the County millions of dollars.”

Among the accomplishments that have led to Cook County’s achieving substantial compliance in the Shakman case are: Adopting and implementing a comprehensive employment plan for all County

offices under the jurisdiction of the President, including the Cook County Public Defender.

Also, adopting and implementing a comprehensive employment plan for the OIIG and the Cook County Health and Hospital System.

Implementing pro-active and transparent employment-related policies, practices and procedures that will prevent and remedy the negative effects of unlawful political contacts and unlawful political discrimination as required by Executive Order, ordinances and applicable law.

Implementing employment-related policies, practices and procedures that prohibit influence of political reasons and factors for non-exempt positions.

Requiring reporting to the OIIG for every employee of the County who learns of, or has a reasonable belief that, unlawful political discrimination or political contact has occurred or is occurring.

Creating a complaint hotline, formal reporting procedures and whistleblower protections that support the investigative and

disciplinary process and effectively detect and deter wrongdoing.

Prohibiting retaliation, punishment or penalty for reporting a political contact, initiating a complaint related to any alleged unlawful political contact or unlawful political discrimination, or cooperating with or assisting those investigations.

Empowering the OIIG to independently monitor and investigate County and CCHHS employment plans for substantial compliance and unlawful political discrimination and unlawful political contact.

Passing new ordinances and protocols to increase the scope of the OIIG’s authority and requiring County employees to cooperate with such investigations.

Adopting regular reporting and auditing requirements related to various elements of the employment plans and supplemental policies in order in order to increase public transparency and accountability.

Developing and conducting extensive training programs to educate employees.

South Suburban Basketball Star Drafted into NBA G-League Former Hillcrest High School and South Suburban College (SSC) men’s basketball star player – Jovan Mooring – was drafted in the first round by the Grand Rapids Drive of the National Basketball Association (NBA) G-League during their annual draft recently. Mooring, a 6’2” Guard, was the 13th pick overall.

“Jo Mooring is a ‘once in a lifetime’ player for any coach—he has a great feel for the game and his competitiveness and drive match his incredible talent,” said his South Suburban Head Coach, John Pigatti. “This is a huge day for Bulldogs Basketball to see one of our own get to the NBA, and congratulations to Jovan. He was a hard worker and a good student, and is an even better person. He still comes back to SSC when he’s home and practices with our kids.”

Mooring averaged 26.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.8 assist, and 3 steals per game during the 2015-16 season for the Bulldogs. With his production and leadership, the Bulldogs finished 3rd at the National Championship Tournament with a 34-3 record––good for best in the nation that year and tops in school history. Bulldogs Head Coach John Pigatti was named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Junior College Division II Coach of the Year after the season.

“It’s ironic that in one of the best performances I have ever seen, Jo scored 51 points for us at Grand Rapids Community College in 2016,” said Coach Pigatti. “He’s the

only player I have ever coached to get a standing ovation from a road crowd, when he walked off the court that night.”

2015 Western Athletic Association Coach of the Year (WAC), Marvin Menzies. Mooring recently graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree from UNLV.
