Illinois Holocaust Museum’s Special Exhibition Activists and Icons: The Photographs of Steve Schapiro On View Now Renowned Chicago-based photographer Steve Schapiro has given history a human face throughout his career, contributing images to Life, Look, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and numerous other publications.

Schapiro’s work is celebrated in Activists and Icons: The Photographs of Steve Schapiro, a special exhibition on view now at Illinois Holocaust Museum. Viewers will experience the breadth of the civil rights movement, as well as vivid portraits of celebrities who challenged - and changed - our cultural norms.

The exhibition’s 46 large-format photographs tell the story of seminal moments in history from the March on Washington (1963) to Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign (1968). Schapiro’s documentary approach comprises emotional portraits of heroes ranging from Rosa Parks to a sanitation striker, and from Joan Baez to Rita Schwerner, widow of Michael Schwerner, one of the three activists killed by the Ku Klux Klan near Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1964.

Other images suggest how martyrs become icons. In a haunting triptych of images, the subject is missing, as Schapiro’s camera

surveys Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Memphis motel room the day after King’s 1968 assassination.

As he documented the tumult of the 1960s, Schapiro spent days and weeks with many of his subjects, some of whom — Robert Kennedy, James Baldwin, and David Bowie — became his close friends. These personal relationships add depth to the historic moments he captured.

Guest curator and civil rights historian Erik S. Gellman observes, “Schapiro documented the civil rights movement with care and intimacy, unlike others who arrived at a pivotal moment and left once they got the shot.”

Museum CEO Susan Abrams adds, “To some, Steve Schapiro is as much an icon as those he photographed, and we are fortunate to have him as a partner for this compelling exhibition.

Visitors will be transported into the lives of the principal protagonists of the 20th century.”

Schapiro picked up a camera at age nine, focusing on his working-class neighbors in the Bronx. In college, he planned to be a writer but soon realized that storytelling with a camera could be just as powerful

as storytelling with a typewriter. Early on, he studied with W. Eugene Smith, who revolutionized the photographic essay with a humanistic approach to his subjects.

This ethos of intimacy informs all of Schapiro’s images, starting with his earliest work as a photojournalist in 1961. His prolific output also includes portraits of the most influential celebrities of our time, ranging from Muhammad Ali to David Bowie, from Truman Capote to Barbra Streisand – all of whom appear in the exhibition. Schapiro has always had an undeniable penchant for conveying something unexpected, even in those we think we know well.

The Annual Awards presented at the Luncheon included three Awards of Merit, the Linda Morgan Award for Volunteerism, the Patricia Chase Magon Municipal Leadership Award, the Senator Aldo DeAngelis Leadership Award, and the Member of the Year Award.

The Member of the Year was presented to Lotton Art Glass Gallery and Studios who has been a staple in arts and culture in the Chicago Southland for more than three decades. The Lotton Art Glass Gallery and Studios is a one-of-a-kind attraction in the area and has drawn in individuals and groups who want to take a first-hand look at the art of glass blowing and is always willing to accommodate tour buses and groups that are visiting the region. Glass that was crafted at this studio in the Chicago Southland has made its way to the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Art Institute of Chicago, according to Petrakis.

“The Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau is motivated to recognize these workers and partners because they are a direct reflection of the value we put on our hospitality industry and these individuals should be rewarded for striving for the highest level of professionalism,” said Petrakis.

Justice Kavanaugh is a threat to Roe v. Wade – but not the only one probably outlaw abortion altogether, perhaps with narrow exceptions in cases of rape or incest, or when the woman’s life is in danger. Other states may place few or no restrictions on abortion – perhaps making it illegal only once the fetus is viable, typically after the 22nd week of pregnancy.

With the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court, some are wondering: Will Roe v. Wade, the landmark case recognizing a woman’s right to choose to terminate a pregnancy, continue to be the law of the land?

Kavanaugh told Sen. Susan Collins, a key vote to approve his nomination, that he viewed Roe v. Wade as “settled law.” But from my vantage point as a constitutional law professor who also litigates reproductive rights cases, the future of Roe v. Wade looks more tenuous than it ever has.

A NEW VACANCY, A NEW COURT Replacing Justice Anthony Kennedy, who retired this summer, with Kavanaugh, who was a deeply conservative judge during his time on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, will fundamentally remake constitutional doctrine in this area.

In 1992, Kennedy’s swing vote preserved Roe v. Wade in a 5-4 decision known as Planned Parenthood v. Casey. More recently, in the 2016 case of Whole Woman’s Health v.

Hellerstedt, Justice Kennedy’s vote was critical to the five-justice majority, which again affirmed the right to choose as fundamental.

But, despite what he told Collins, Kavanaugh has expressed hostility to Roe. In a public speech last year, Kavanaugh praised the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist’s dissent from the Roe decision. He also voted against an undocumented minor in government custody who wanted an abortion, complaining that the judges who voted in favor of the young woman were granting a right to “abortion on demand” and arguing that the woman should have

to delay the procedure for a few weeks until a family could be found to sponsor her.

This record suggests Kavanaugh could provide a critical fifth vote to the anti-Roe wing of the court, joining justices Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch.

WHAT HAPPENS IF ROE IS OVERRULED? If the Supreme Court votes to overrule Roe, it wouldn’t immediately make abortion illegal throughout the country. That would probably require five justices to decide that embryos and fetuses are “persons” entitled to constitutional protection. No justice – not even the strongly anti-abortion Justice Antonin Scalia – has ever taken such an extreme view.

Instead, the court would probably say that states are allowed to restrict abortion however they see fit. The court may rule that states can choose to protect “potential life,” and that the woman’s right to choose whether and when to become a parent is not strong enough to overcome the state’s interest in protecting fetuses.

That means some states would

A CHALLENGE IN THE STATES Numerous states stand ready to mount a challenge to Roe. In 2018 alone, seven states have introduced or passed so-called “heartbeat bills” that ban abortion as early as six weeks of pregnancy.

These laws are bold assaults on Roe’s central premise: that states cannot ban abortions early in pregnancy.

A challenge to a “heartbeat bill” could bring Roe before the court, but in reality, a challenge to a law like that isn’t even necessary. In fact, almost any abortion case, including several that are already pending, could become a vehicle for overturning Roe if the justice choose to hear it. The Supreme Court gets to pick and choose the cases it hears and needs only four justices to vote to hear a case. That means it might decide to weigh in on abortion rights as soon as this fall.

For example, the newly composed Supreme Court could decide to take up the constitutionality of laws in Ohio or Indiana banning abortions sought for particular reasons, such as fetal anomaly. Both laws have been blocked by federal courts, and either could still be appealed to the Supreme Court. If the court decides to hear one of those cases, it could uphold the laws on the grounds that Roe was incorrect and a new, more relaxed legal standard should apply to abortion restrictions.

What’s more, nine states, including Wisconsin and West Virginia, actually still have pre-Roe

abortion bans on the books. These laws weren’t being enforced as long as Roe was the law of the land. If Roe is overturned, it’s possible that prosecutors in those states would try to bring criminal charges against doctors performing abortions, without even waiting for the legislature to pass a new law banning abortion.

Four additional states – North Dakota, South Dakota, Louisiana and Mississippi – have passed socalled “trigger laws” providing that abortion will become illegal the moment Roe is overruled.

Even in the absence of laws such as these, though, many state legislatures won’t hesitate to enact new abortion bans immediately. In fact, the Center for Reproductive Rights considers only 21 states to be relatively low-risk for passing new abortion bans if Roe fell.

Of these 21, a few states are expected to take an active role in protecting abortion access in the absence of Roe. This would likely mean that women in Massachusetts would live under a permissive set of laws, while women in Mississippi would face more restrictive ones.

THE ROLE OF ROBERTS Of course, it’s possible that Roe will live another day. With Kavanaugh seated, Chief Justice John Roberts will be at the ideological center of the court, with four conservatives – Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh – all to the right of him. Roberts is therefore likely to become the swing vote.

Roberts is a famously careful jurist who often avoids overruling precedent by issuing a narrow opinion instead. He is also likely concerned about his legacy. He might not want the Roberts Court to be the court that overruled Roe and took away the right to choose.

He might be concerned about the backlash among members of the public, who have long assumed that Roe was here to stay and who favor keeping it by more than a two-toone margin.

Then again, many justices have affirmed their devotion to precedent, only to later overturn it.

Both Roberts and Gorsuch spoke favorably about following precedent during their Senate confirmation hearings. Yet both justices voted in June 2018 to overturn a unanimous Supreme Court case protecting the rights of unions – Abood v. Detroit Board of Education – that had stood undisturbed for more than 40 years.

Still, it’s important not to lose sight of the bigger picture.

Whether or not Roe goes, with Kavanaugh on the bench the Supreme Court is likely to shift far to the right on reproductive rights — potentially affecting not just abortion, but access to contraception as well. One sign of this shift is Kavanaugh’s record of siding with employers seeking to block employees’ access to birth control under the ACA. And, even if Roe isn’t overturned, it may continue to exist in name only, as the Supreme Court is likely to uphold every sort of restriction short of an outright abortion ban.

In short, there are many possible paths for Roe v. Wade in the future, and significant questions remain.

One thing is almost certain, though – the court will continue to erode the power of Roe. This story has been updated from a version published on Aug. 2, 2018.

NEWS Cunningham urges citizens to get the facts about voter registration State Senator Bill Cunningham (18th District) is cautioning suburban Cook County and Chicago residents about misleading reports that the window for voter registration has closed.

In fact, there are still plenty of opportunities to register to vote ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

“Of all the excuses people use not to vote, claiming that it is too hard to register might be the least valid,” Cunningham said. “Thanks to recent changes in the law, there are plenty of

opportunities remaining to register to vote between now and the General Election, including the ability to register on Election Day itself.”

ONLINE REGISTRATION The easiest way to register is online at the Illinois State Board of Elections website – https://ova. elections.il.gov. Online registration is open until Sunday, Oct. 21 and is available to any Illinois citizen who has a driver’s license or state-issued identification.

‘GRACE PERIOD’ REGISTRATION So-called “grace period” registration is available at all Cook County and City of Chicago early voting sites until Nov. 5. New voters can register and vote in-person on the same day at each site as long as they bring two forms of identification.

COMMUNITY The Nature Conservancy of Illinois Hosts Awe of Nature Festival In South Suburbs

The Nature Conservancy in partnership with the Cook County Forest Preserves and The City of Markham recently hosted the first Awe of Nature Festival at the Midlothian Meadows Forest Preserve located on 15440 S. Pulaski Rd. The goal of the festival was to connect visitors to nature and showcase the Illinois Prairies.

“I learned that the community is not necessarily aware or aware and not connected to the prairies. And so, my sense of nature and learning about the prairies was ignited even more in the terms of what the prairies are and what they do and it’s connection to nature as a whole which I find to be phenomenal.

I mean there’s so much in nature that’s awesome,” said Debra Williams, community outreach coordinator for The Nature Conservancy.

The Awe of Nature Festival featured outdoor activities that

celebrated nature and the environment through music, arts and crafts, bike and pony rides, performances from hip-hop dancers and gymnastic tumblers, archery, and food vendors.

“In my years of working with the Indian Boundary Prairie, the Awe of Nature Festival was one of the best bridge experiences and segue to reintroducing the City of Markham and the surrounding communities to nature. The partnership between the Cook County Forest Preserve, The Nature Conservancy and the City of Markham was a new beginning to help us learn and understand more about the importance and excitement of nature as though it were a new culture. Debra Williams as the Community Outreach Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy and Indian Boundary Prairie has been diligent in her work as she helps people understand and speak the language of nature by “connecting people to people and people to

nature,” said Roger Agpawa, mayor of Markham City.

The idea of an Awe of Nature Festival was presented as a way to expose Southland residents to the many ways that nature exists in their communities and to showcase The City of Markham which is known as the prairie capital of Illinois.

“There’s so much in nature that’s awesome and just thinking about raising the level of interest in nature

is how the Awe of Nature Festival came to be. Of course, we wanted to be connected with the prairies but I also wanted to broaden the scope because nature is everywhere. Nature is not just the prairies. Nature is outside your doors, nature is when you walk outside of your house to look at the sky,” said Williams.

The Nature Conservancy, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, is a global nonprofit organization focused

on environmental activism and preservation. Since 1951, The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends, according to The Nature Conservancy’s website.

Midlothian Meadows is part of the Cook County Forest Preserves and is a place to gather and engage in outdoor recreational activities, according to the press release announcing the Awe of Nature Festival.

RUSTIC CHICKEN WITH RIPE OLIVES Recipe courtesy of Vincent Richutti, a third-generation California Ripe Olive grower Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 30-35 minutes Servings: 4 1/2 cup mixed, porcini or chanterelle dried mushrooms 2 teaspoons fennel seeds 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 1/2 pounds baby yellow potatoes, halved 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 small boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 1/2 cups California Black and Green Ripe Olives 1/4 cup chicken broth 1/4 cup white wine 1 lemon, thinly sliced and seeds removed

Heat oven to 425 F. In small food processor, pulse mushrooms, fennel seeds, basil, salt and red pepper flakes until mixture is finely chopped and almost powder-like.

Place potatoes on large, shallow-rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with 2 tablespoons olive oil; toss to coat.

Sprinkle with half the mushroom mixture and toss lightly.

Brush chicken with remaining olive oil and sprinkle both sides with remaining mushroom mixture.

Nestle chicken and olives into potatoes.

Drizzle with broth and wine, and top with lemon slices.

Roast 30-35 minutes, or until chicken and potatoes are cooked through.

Remove lemon slices before serving.
