Jazz Legend To Receive Inaugural Award At Prairie State Foundation Gala Continued from page 1

Prairie State College recently announced that Orbert Davis will receive the inaugural Reach for the Stars Award at Prairie State College Foundation’s annual gala. The event will be held at the college’s main campus, 202 S. Halsted St., on Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in South Holland.

Davis is the conductor and artistic director for the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and has been working with Prairie State College to help them put on their annual jazz festival for 30 years, according to information provided by Prairie State College.

Not only is Davis a jazz musician, but he is also an educator and a composer. Chicago

Magazine named Davis as the “Y2k Best Trumpeter in Chicago” and “Chicagoan of the Year for 2002.” In Sept. 2011, Davis became the second Chicagoan in history to be named Artist-In-Residence for the Chicago Jazz Festival, according to information provided by Davis.

The Prairie State College Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was created to promote Prairie State College and enhance opportunities for students. As a nonprofit, the foundation works to build awareness of the college in the community, support students through scholarships, attract and retain staff, identify potential board members, and overall provide for the school’s growth and development, according to information provided by the Prairie State

College Foundation.

All proceeds from the upcoming Prairie State College Foundation Gala will go towards student scholarships.

“We have many students on campus who would not receive an education if it wasn’t for Prairie State College,” said Deborah Havighorst, executive director of the Prairie State College Foundation. “The Foundation bridges the gap between what students receive from financial aid and what they can actually afford. I’ve had students tell me they would have to take a semester off because they were $200 short. The Foundation is here to help keep these students in school and help them earn their degrees.”

Havighorst said that the foundation has been able to continuously increase schol-

arship funds every year for the last several years and help thousands of students with tuition, books, supplies, and overall support that extends beyond financial need.

The upcoming gala is black-tie optional and begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the Prairie State College conference center. There will be a gourmet dinner in the college atrium at 7 p.m.

The Gala will feature a live auction, raffles, dancing, and music will be provided by Brass from the Past, a Chicagoland band that performs Motown, soul, and rock music.

Trump’s bad Nixon imitation may cost him the presidency President Johnson learned of Chennault’s activities from the FBI and other sources, but he had no proof Nixon himself was involved.

Whatever Donald Trump does, Richard Nixon usually did it first and better.

Nixon got a foreign government’s help to win a presidential election over 50 years ago. Trump’s imitation of the master has proven far from perfect, and that may cost him the presidency.

Trump’s first mistake was soliciting foreign interference personally.

As a result, he cannot deny that he urged Ukraine’s president to investigate Joe Biden. The proof is in his own White House’s record of their telephone call.

Nixon was a more cautious international conspirator, as I detailed in “Chasing Shadows: The Nixon Tapes, the Chennault Affair, and the Origins of Watergate.”

When Nixon solicited foreign interference on behalf of his presidential campaign, he was careful to use a cutout, a go-between whose clandestine activities could, if exposed, be plausibly denied. Anna Chennault, a conservative activist and Republican fundraiser, acted as Nixon’s secret back channel to the government of South Vietnam.

Playing politics with war The Vietnam War was the biggest issue of the 1968 presidential campaign.

Vietnam like an albatross on Democratic presidential nominee Hubert Humphrey, the sitting vice president. Nixon’s great fear was that President Lyndon Johnson would start peace talks before Election Day, boosting Humphrey’s campaign along with hopes for an end to the war.

Nixon’s fear was realized when Johnson announced peace talks in the campaign’s final week. Nixon watched his lead over Humphrey dwindle to nothingness.

So he turned to Chennault. She conveyed a secret message from Nixon to South Vietnam, urging it to boycott the peace talks. The South did just that only three days before the election, thereby destroying any hope for an imminent peace.

False counter-accusations It’s too late for Trump to use a cutout with Ukraine, but in other ways his actions mirror Nixon’s.

One recurring Nixonian tactic was to falsely claim the Democrats did things that were just as bad as the things he actually did. For example, Republicans charged that Johnson played politics with the war by announcing peace talks right before Election Day. The diplomatic record proves otherwise. Johnson set three conditions for the peace talks months earlier. He offered to halt the bombing of North Vietnam if Hanoi: (1) respected the demilitarized zone dividing North and South Vietnam, (2) accepted South Vietnamese participation in peace talks, and (3) stopped shelling Southern cities.

Hanoi, however, insisted on an unconditional bombing halt. Johnson refused to budge. So did the North Vietnamese – until October 1968, when they accepted all three of Johnson’s conditions. The timing of the peace talks was their choice, not his.

The partisan accusation was false.

ten-repeated, never-substantiated conspiracy theory that one or more Bidens did something corrupt involving Ukraine is the opposite of true. But it does shift the spotlight off Republicans and onto Democrats. And it fosters the false sense that “both sides do it” when only one side did.

Another of Nixon’s favorite tactics was to suggest there was something shady about detecting his crimes. Just as Trump baselessly claims that the Ukraine whistleblower got information about him “illegally,” Republicans like William Safire baselessly claimed that LBJ “abused the power of our intelligence agencies” to get dirt on Nixon.

The records of the CIA, NSA and FBI prove otherwise. Like presidents before and since, Johnson used the CIA and NSA to collect diplomatic intelligence. To provide him with Saigon’s true, private position on the peace talks, the CIA bugged the office of South Vietnamese president Nguyen Van Thieu and the NSA intercepted cables to Thieu from the South Vietnamese embassy in Washington, D.C. Johnson did learn something about Chennault’s activities from this surveillance, but only because diplomatic intelligence is supposed to uncover attempts to thwart presidential diplomacy.

Based on what he learned, John-

son ordered the FBI to tail Chennault and tap the South Vietnamese embassy’s phone. Mere days later, the FBI wiretap overheard Chennault telling the South Vietnamese on behalf of “her boss (not further identified)” to “hold on, we are gonna win.”

Here was evidence that the Nixon campaign was violating the Logan Act – which forbids private U.S. citizens from conducting “any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government” – by undermining the president’s diplomatic efforts to end a war that was killing hundreds of Americans every week.

In other words, Johnson used the FBI to uncover a crime that was also a threat to national security.

That’s not an abuse of the FBI. It’s why the FBI exists.

Clearly, there’s one thing that can overcome Nixonian tactics: evidence. For this reason, House impeachment investigators will likely subpoena as much as they can, and President Trump will likely withhold as much as he can.

Withholding evidence is yet another Nixonian tactic, one called “stonewalling.” It was the basis of the final article of impeachment against him.

• Cybercriminals have their sights set on non-standard ports for web traffic as a manner to deliver viruses undetected. Based on a sample size of more than 210 million malware attacks recorded through June 2019, Capture Labs monitored the largest spike on record since tracking the vector, when one quarter of malware attacks came across non-standard ports in May 2019 alone.

How much are you polluting your office air just by existing?

Just by breathing or wearing deodorant, you have more influence over your office space than you might think, a growing body of evidence shows. But could these basic acts of existence also be polluting the air in the office room where you work?

To find out, a team of engineers at Purdue University has been conducting one of the largest studies of its kind in the office spaces of a building rigged with thousands of sensors. The goal is to identify all types of indoor air contaminants and recommend ways to control them through how a building is designed and operated.

“If we want to provide better air quality for office workers to improve their productivity, it is important to first understand what’s in the air and what factors influence the emissions and removal of pollutants,” said Brandon Boor, an assistant professor of civil engineering with a courtesy appointment in environmental and ecological engineering.

The data is showing that people and ventilation systems greatly impact the chemistry of indoor air – possibly more than anything else in an office space. The researchers are presenting their initial findings at the 2019 American Association for Aerosol Research Conference in Portland, Oregon, going on now through October 18.

“The chemistry of indoor air is dynamic. It changes throughout the day based on outdoor conditions, how the ventilation system operates and occupancy patterns in the office,” Boor said.

The building, called the Living Labs at Purdue’s Ray W. Herrick Laboratories, uses an array of sensors to precisely monitor four open-plan office spaces and to track the

flow of indoor and outdoor air through the ventilation system. The team developed a new technique to track occupancy by embedding temperature sensors in each desk chair.

Through use of the Living Labs, Boor’s team has begun to identify previously unknown behaviors of chemicals called volatile organic compounds, such as how they are transformed in ventilation systems and removed by filters.

“We wanted to shed light on the behindthe-scenes role ventilation systems have on the air we breathe,” Boor said.

Group to deploy a highly sensitive “nose” – an instrument that scientists call a proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer.

The instrument, typically used for measuring outdoor air quality, helped “sniff ” out compounds in human breath, such as isoprene, in real time. Boor’s team found that isoprene and many other volatile compounds linger in the office even after people have left the room.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) has been awarded a grant of more than $600,000 by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to enhance the state’s emergency response capabilities when dealing with hazardous materials related to transportation incidents.

The purpose of a Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grant is to protect against the risks to life, proper-

ty, and the environment that are possible when transporting hazardous material in intrastate, interstate, and foreign commerce. These funds will help IEMA and its sub-applicants perform hazardous materials response duties and aid in the development, implementation, and improvement of emergency plans for local communities and training for emergency responders to help communities prepare for a potential hazardous materials transportation incident.

are the dominant source of volatile organic compounds in a modern office environment,” Boor said. “We found levels of many compounds to be 10 to 20 times higher indoors than outdoors. If an office space is not properly ventilated, these volatile compounds may adversely affect worker health and productivity.”

The team also revealed that a pollutant entering from outside, ozone, disappears inside.

This is because ozone interacts with other indoor compounds and the vast surfaces of a furnished office. The researchers found that ozone and compounds released from peeling an orange, called monoterpenes, mix to form new, super-tiny particles as small as one-billionth of a meter. The newly formed particles could be toxic because they are small enough to get into the deepest regions of a person’s lungs.

The effects of volatile compounds released in an office might not just be restricted to indoors. The researchers believe that chemicals emitted from self-care products such as deodorant, makeup, and hair spray may elevate levels outdoors as they are vented outside by the ventilation system.

This work is funded in part by the National Science Foundation Environmental Engineering Program, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Chemistry of Indoor Environments Program and the Purdue Research Foundation.

The research aligns with Purdue’s Giant Leaps celebration, acknowledging the university’s global advancements made in health and sustainability as part of Purdue’s 150th anniversary. These are two of the four themes of the yearlong celebration’s Ideas Festival, designed to showcase Purdue as an intellectual center solving real-world issues.
