Fox News uses the word ‘hate’ much more than MSNBC or CNN

Fox News is up to five times more likely to use the word “hate” in its programming than its main competitors, according to our new study of how cable news channels use language.

Fox particularly uses the term when explaining opposition to Donald Trump. His opponents are said to “hate” Trump, his values and his followers.

Our research, which ran from Jan. 1 to May 8, 2020, initially explored news of Trump’s impeachment. Then came the coronavirus. As we sifted through hundreds of cable news transcripts over five months, we noticed consistent differences between the vocabulary used on Fox News and that of MSNBC. While their news agendas were largely similar, the words they used to describe these newsworthy events diverged greatly.

Fox and hate For our study, we analyzed 1,088 program transcripts from the two ideologically branded channels – right-wing Fox and left-wing MSNBC – between 6 p.m. and 10:59 p.m.

Because polarized media diets contribute to partisan conflict, our quantitative analysis identified terms indicating antipathy or resentment, such as “dislike,” “despise,” “can’t stand” and “hate.”

We expected to find that both of the strongly ideological networks made use of such words, perhaps in different ways. Instead, we found that Fox used antipathy words five times more often than MSNBC. “Hate” really stood out: It appeared 647 times on Fox, compared to 118 on MSNBC. Fox usually pairs certain words alongside “hate.” The most notable was “they” – as in, “they hate.” Fox used this phrase 101 times between January and May. MSNBC used it just five times.

To put these findings in historic context, we then used the GDELT Television database to search for occurrences of the phrase “they hate” on both networks going back to 2009. We included CNN for an additional comparison.

We found Fox’s usage of “they hate” has increased over time, with a clear spike around the polarizing 2016 Trump-Clinton election. But Fox’s use of “hate” really took off when Trump’s presidency began.

Beginning in January 2017, the

mean usage of “they hate” on the network doubled.

‘Us’ versus ‘them’ So who is doing all this hating – and why – according to Fox News?

Mainly, it’s Democrats, liberals, political elites and the media.

Though these groups do not actually have the same interests, ideology or job description, our analysis finds Fox lumps them together as the “they” in “they hate.”

As for the object of all this hatred, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and other Fox hosts most often name Trump. Anchors also identify their audience – “you,” “Christians” and “us” – as the target of animosity. Only 13 instances of “they hate” also cited a reason. Examples included “they can’t accept the fact that he won” or “because we voted for [Trump].”

Citing liberal hate as a fact that needs no explanation serves to dismiss criticism of specific policies or events. It paints criticism or moral outrage directed at Trump as inherently irrational.

For loyal Fox viewers, these language patterns construct a coherent but potentially dangerous narrative about the world.

Our data show intensely partisan hosts like Hannity and Carlson are

more likely than other Fox anchors to use “they hate” in this way. Nevertheless, the phrase permeates Fox’s evening programming, uttered by hosts, interviewees and Republican sources, all painting Trump critics not as legitimate opponents but hateful enemies working in bad faith.

By repeatedly telling its viewers they are bound together as objects of the contempt of a powerful and hateful left-leaning “elite,” Fox has constructed two imagined communities. On the one side: Trump along with good folks under siege. On the other: nefarious Democrats, liberals, the left and mainstream media.

Research confirms that repeated exposure to polarized media messages can lead news consumers to form firm opinions and can foster what’s called an “in-group” identity.

The us-versus-them mentality, in turn, deepens feelings of antipathy toward the perceived “out-group.”

The Pew Research Center reports an increasing tendency, especially among Republicans, to view members of the other party as immoral and unpatriotic. Pew also finds Republicans trust Fox News more than any other media outlet.

Americans’ divergent media sources – and specifically Fox’s “hate”-filled rhetoric – aren’t solely

to blame here. Cable news is part of a larger picture of heightened polarization, intense partisanship and paralysis in Congress.

Good business Leaning into intense partisanship has been good for Fox News, though.

In summer 2020 it was the country’s most watched network. But using hate to explain the news is a dangerous business plan when shared crises demand Americans’ empathy, negotiation and compromise.

Fox’s talk of hate undermines democratic values like tolerance and reduces Americans’ trust of their fellow citizens.

This fraying of social ties helps explain America’s failures in managing the pandemic – and bodes badly for its handling of what seems likely to be a chaotic, divisive presidential election. In pitting its viewers against the rest of the country, Fox News works against potential solutions to the the very crises it covers.

The scholarship recipient will be chosen jointly by RBA and the Spelman College faculty. The intern will rotate among each of RBA’s departments allowing them to get exposure to many aspects of the asset management industry.

Health and Safety Program Promotes Successful Small Business Reopenings The Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) recently announced the launch of Back to Business Illinois, a free, voluntary service to connect small businesses of 250 employees or fewer with consultants who will help them evaluate and address workplace safety and health issues related to COVID-19.

The consultants will create a plan for small businesses that promotes a safe, healthy and productive environment for workers and customers. Back to Business Illinois health and safety consultants in IDOL’s Workplace

Safety and Health Consultation Division will help local small businesses audit their physical operation, identify best practices and find ways to implement them efficiently.

This is a non-punitive program, and no fines or citations are associated with it. It is designed entirely as a benefit to empower Illinois small businesses to continue operating safely.

The Cook County Assessor’s Office is required to assess one-third of the properties located in the county each year to determine fair market values. Under state and county law, assessed value (AV) for residential property is 10 percent of market value and the AV for industrial/commercial property is 25 percent of market value.

Our office does not compute your property tax bill, collect your property taxes, or determine your local tax rate. We also do not determine the amount of taxes you are required

to pay. In reality, local taxing bodies such as school districts and municipalities determine tax rates, levies, and the overall amount of your taxes. The AV my office sets does determine the share of taxes you are required to pay. Therefore, it is very important to make sure it is both fair and accurate.

On my first day in office, I signed an executive order aimed at increasing professionalism, transparency and public trust in the Assessor’s Office as well as eliminating conflicts of interest.

Our office created new residential and commercial modeling processes to deliver high-quality reassessments. Reports for each reassessed township containing methodology and formulas for the new values are posted on the Assessor’s Office website at www. cookcountyassessor.com. This new system for publishing and updating code will allow you to monitor the work of our office and even suggest changes to our methods that may improve accuracy.

To further increase transparency, we also implemented a visitor’s log that is updated monthly and posted on our website. We also issued a set of official rules for doing business with the office and developed a new policy where the identity of an attorney, practitioner or law firm is now kept anonymous from the valuations analyst handling an appeal.

Our office also invited the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) to conduct a complete audit of the office in order to improve our operations and develop a three-year strategic plan.

In addition, our outreach efforts have been expanded including the launch of a countywide listening tour where I have teamed up with Cook County Commissioners to travel throughout the county to share plans for reform and answer questions. Keith E. Sonderling Sworn In As EEOC Commissioner And Vice Chair Keith E. Sonderling was recently sworn in as Commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Sonderling was nominated by President Trump on July 17, 2019, re-nominated on March 16, 2020, and was confirmed on September 22, 2020 by a Senate vote of 52-41 to serve as

Commissioner, for a term expiring July 1, 2024. Sonderling was also designated by President Trump to serve as Vice Chair of the Commission. Sonderling joins Chair Janet Dhillon and Commissioners Charlotte A. Burrows and Victoria A. Lipnic on the presidentially appointed bipartisan Commission.

One vacancy remains on the Commission.

Prior to his appointment to the EEOC, Sonderling served as the Deputy Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor. He previously served as the Acting Administrator. The Wage and Hour Division

administers and enforces Federal labor laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, and the labor provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Prior to joining the administration in 2017, he practiced labor and employment law at the Florida-based Gunster Law Firm. He

received his B.S., magna cum laude, from the University of Florida and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Nova Southeastern University.

State Representative to run for Mayor

Thaddeus Jones was the first African-American Alderman in Calumet City when he was elected in 1996. Now, he wants to be the first African-American mayor of the city, which is in the South Suburbs.

Jones, who was born and raised in Ford Heights, is also an Illinois State Representative in the 29th District. Jones said Calumet City is in a state of despair because people have walked away from Calumet City, much like people did in Ford Heights.

“They failed the residents,” he said. “I’m running because I want to make sure residents have a chance, that children growing up in Calumet City will have a chance of great opportunities, great success,” he added.

“Same fight that I did, same fight that I gave, I want to make sure these children have an opportunity for that. We have a chance to turn a corner. That’s what I want to do as mayor.”

Jones said he got into politics because he wanted to make a difference. He said when he was living in Ford Heights, he started knocking on doors and being involved in the local Democratic Party.

“I continue that today, still making a difference, still knocking on doors, still talking to residents and still trying to provide a difference,” he said.

Jones said he gets a thrill from helping people, talking to them, praying with them and looking them in the eyes. He added being of service to constituents is a number one priority at his office.

“It means more to people when you knock on their door and you know they need food.

Or you knock on their door and you know they just lost someone and you can provide service for them,” he said.

Jones said with his experience in local government and running a campaign, he is wellversed in “bare-knuckle politics.” He said local government and state government have prepared him, so he knows what resources are necessary to bring Calumet City back to life.

He also knows what resources he has brought back to Calumet City as an Illinois State Representative to help the community grow and help the community turn the corner. He said those resources include federal and state funding.

Jones said the demographics of Calumet

City have changed, as well as the economic development opportunities. He said River Oaks used to be the economic engine of Calumet City. Now, he describes it as an “eyesore.”

Jones discussed his vision for Calumet City and said he wants the residents to join him in imagining the possibilities. “Just imagine a Calumet City that has jobs and economic development. Just imagine a Calumet City that has less crime. Just imagine a Calumet City that has programs for its youth and its people. Just imagine a Calumet City that has good housing and good economic development,” he said.

Jones added he has a five-point plan that includes bringing in jobs (including union jobs), economic development, reducing crime, better education and housing. Jones went on to discuss creating “a Black Wall Street” in Calumet City.

He added: “I want to revitalize River Oaks Mall, by making it a mixed housing, mixed development at the mall, bring in a downtown district in Calumet City, with a new mall and new municipal building, new downtown for business and create a Black Wall Street in Calumet City. And, redevelop-

Jones said once that is done, residents will be reconnected and once residents and elected officials get reconnected, they can envision a new Calumet City. “I’m going to be a mayor for everybody in Calumet City,” he said. “We can do this and we will turn a corner.”

Chicago-based writers announced as the 2020/2021 Playwrights Unit Goodman Theatre’s commitment to new work and commissioning emerging artists continues as four Chicago-based writers are announced as the 2020/2021 Playwrights Unit—Eliza Bent, a playwright and performer whose work has been seen at The Flea Theatre, Clubbed Thumb and more; Marisa Carr, the co-founder of Turtle Theatre Collective, whose work has been seen throughout the Midwest; Terry Guest, whose work has been commissioned by Jackalope Theatre, First Floor Theatre and Chicago Children’s Theatre, among others; and Exal Iraheta, whose play They Could Give No Name was featured as part of the 2019 Ignition Festival of New Plays at Victory Gardens.

The Playwrights Unit, in partnership with Chicago Dramatists, supports Chicago playwrights by commissioning and assisting in the development of new work from its annually-selected members.

Goodman Theatre’s commitment to new work and commissioning emerging artists continues despite the challenges of COVID-19, with Playwrights Unit members currently meeting bi-monthly via Zoom to discuss the commissioned plays-in-progress with the Goodman’s artistic team, culminating in a public staged reading of each new play in July of 2021, presuming it is safe to do so.

Cruise Ship No Sail Order Extended Through October 31, 2020 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced the extension of a No Sail Order for cruise ships through October 31, 2020. This order continues to suspend passenger operations on cruise ships with the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction.

Cumulative surveillance data reported to CDC from March 1 through September 29, 2020, shows at least 3,689 COVID-19 or COVID-like illness cases on cruise ships in U.S. waters, in addition to at least 41 reported deaths. In a press release, the CDC noted that it recognizes these numbers are likely incomplete and an underestimate.

Recent outbreaks on cruise ships overseas provide current evidence

that cruise ship travel continues to transmit and amplify the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19,—even when ships sail at reduced passenger capacities—and would likely spread the infection into U.S. communities if passenger operations were to resume prematurely in the United States.

The challenges described in the No Sail Order highlight the need for further action before cruise ships can safely resume passenger operations in the United States. Recent passenger voyages in foreign countries continue to have outbreaks, despite cruise ship operators having extensive health and safety protocols to prevent the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 on board and spread to communities where passengers disembark.

According to a press release, when health and safety protocols were apparently observed, resuming passenger operations significantly burdened public health authorities by creating the need for additional SARS-CoV-2 testing, isolation of infected travelers, contact tracing, and quarantining of exposed people.

The continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, risk of resurgence in countries that have suppressed transmission, ongoing concerns related to restarting of cruising internationally, and the need for additional time to assess industry measures to control potential SARS-CoV-2 transmission on board cruise ships with passengers without burdening public health—support continuation of www.citizennewspapergroup.com

the No Sail Order at this time.

On cruise ships, passengers and crew share spaces that are more crowded than most urban settings.

Data show that when only essential crew are on board, ongoing spread of SARS-CoV-2 still occurs. If unrestricted cruise ship passenger operations were permitted to resume, passengers and crew on board would be at increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and those that work or travel on cruise ships would place substantial unnecessary risk on healthcare workers, port personnel and federal partners (i.e., Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard), and the communities they return to, according to a press release.

The order will remain in effect until the earliest of:

1. The expiration of the Secretary of Health and Human Services’ declaration that COVID-19 constitutes a public health emergency, 2. The CDC Director rescinds or modifies the order based on specific public health or other considerations, or 3. October 31, 2020.

CDC will continue to update its guidance and recommendations to specify basic safety standards and public health interventions based on the best scientific evidence available.
