Want the youth vote? Some college students are still up for grabs in November

College students are a rapidly growing and increasingly coveted voting bloc. Twice as many college students voted in the 2018 midterms as did in 2014, challenging the stereotype that young people are politically disengaged. According to the Knight Foundation, 71% of college students are expected to vote this November.

Both President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden are courting them, in different ways.

Trump and his education secretary, Betsy DeVos, are trying to win the support of students with new religious freedom and freedom of speech assurances. Meanwhile, Biden is promising to enact tuition-free college and forgive US$10,000 in student loans for all borrowers if elected. There are over 14 million college students in the United States, which has about 235 million eligible voters.

Nearly all students were born after 1996, meaning they belong to Generation Z. This generation of expected voters is 45% nonwhite, according to the Pew Research Center. And over half of Gen Z college students are

the first in their families to attend college. As with any large and diverse group, some students are more likely to vote than others.

So which young people are actually up for grabs?

Who votes, who doesn’t Our study, the Interfaith Diversity Experiences and Attitudes Longitudinal Survey, or IDEALS, helps to answer that question.

We conducted this four-year study of 5,762 students enrolled in one of 120 colleges and universities between fall 2015 and spring 2019. Our goal was to examine the religious and political behavior of students over time. We asked participants 70 questions – among them whether, in the 2016 election, they: did not vote; voted for the Republican candidate; voted for the Democratic candidate; voted for a third-party candidate; wrote in the name of a candidate; were not eligible to vote; or preferred not to respond.

Respondents were also asked their race/ethnicity, gender, family educational history, college major, religion, sexual orientation and other identifying features.

In terms of racial groups, we found that students identifying as Asian American/Asian/Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian were less electorally engaged, with 26.2% reporting that they did not vote in 2016. Black/African American, white and Latino students were significantly more likely to have voted in the last election. And every one of the Native American students eligible to vote in 2016 did so.

First-generation students – regardless of race – were also unlikely to vote. Twenty-nine percent of them sat out the 2016 election, compared with 20% of students with at least one college-educated parent.

These nonvoting trends held as other important characteristics changed. First-generation students at public institutions were just as likely not to vote as first-generation students at private institutions.

Similarly, Asian American business students were just as likely not to vote as Asian American students studying arts or humanities.

Swing students These findings make historic sense. Both Asian Americans and lower-income Americans – a

racially mixed group that many first-generation students belong to – are groups traditionally less likely to vote. National politicians rarely make specific outreach efforts to Asian Americans, who make up 5.9% of the U.S. population. That leaves some with the “pervasive feeling of not belonging in American politics,” wrote Caitlin Kim for the research group New America in 2017. The country’s 11 million eligible Asian American voters are an “untapped” power,“ says Neil Goh of the Woori Center, an Asian American advocacy organization.

Poorer Americans, on the other hand, are historically less likely to vote, in part due to a slew of practical hurdles. They are less likely to have ID, often experience longer voting lines and have more difficulty finding their polling place. Analysts say just a small increase in turnout among the 38 million Americans who live in poverty could shift the 2020 election.

Both Trump and Biden are trying to leverage their blue-collar appeal, which may capture the interests of first-generation voters. But new research on Asian American voters shows their party preference, once

largely Republican, has firmly shifted toward the Democrats. And Biden’s vice presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, has been highlighting her Asian roots in an effort to appeal to Asian American voters.

With Election Day just weeks away, many voters on both sides of the aisle are already strongly committed to one candidate and unlikely to change their minds, so campaigns are focused on winning over and turning out traditionally nonvoting blocs.

Asian American and first-generation students may be among the few votes that are still up for grabs.

Comcast distributed $50,000 in grant money to three community-based organizations in the South Suburbs to assist in those organizations’ technological needs. New Star, in Chicago Heights, was one of the recipients of $15,000 in grant money.

New Star serves people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, using innovation and caring.

Its mission is to enrich the lives of the individuals they serve, while maximizing their independence.

In addition to its Chicago Heights office, there is also a Crete (Ill.) and Schererville (Ind.) office.

Dan Strick is the executive director of New Star. Strick said New Star decided to apply for the grant because the organization has been pursuing technology for its consumers for the last 8-10 years. It actually developed a computer lab at one of its sites about 10 years ago.

“We have known technology needs to be more accessible to the people we support. So, we’ve been incrementally, a little bit here, a little bit there, step-by-step pursuing that,” he said.

“And, the whole pandemic changed everyone’s reality where you cannot survive without technology now.”

Strick said New Star wanted to use the funding from Comcast to help move forward in a more significant way and as a result of the grant, New Star will be able to equip families and consumers with tablets, smartphones and applications. New Star constituents, who represent individuals from predominantly low-income areas, will also be able to receive training on how to use the technologies.

Strick added New Star serves about 600 families a year, but said the Comcast funds will focus on a smaller subset of individuals, including 40 families. He said they will see how

it works and go from there with the possibility of expanding.

One of the challenges of trying to reach the population the organization serves, is that sometimes, the families, with less means, can’t access the internet, Strick continued.

“It’s hard to function in today’s world if you don’t have internet access.

So, we’re trying to use our technology and supports to help with that,” he said.

Strick pointed to the Comcast program, Internet Essentials, which provides internet access to low-income families at a lower rate. Those who are eligible for public assistance programs – Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, National School Lunch Program, Housing Assistance, Medicaid or Social Security Insurance – are eligible for the Internet Essentials program. He said families New Star serves are being partnered with that program to make sure they can access the internet.

Strick said another challenge is familiarity with the technology. He said there is a wide group of people who might not have fully embraced technology or who are unfamiliar with how to navigate the internet.

“Through the Comcast funding, we’ve been able to do some fun virtual technology things with our people, even though we’re not able to see everyone face-to-face. We’re doing bingo through Zoom. We’re doing a DJ Dance Party every Friday. We’re doing exercise classes online. We’re doing a lot just to keep people engaged.”

John Crowley, senior vice president of Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region, said COVID-19 has made it even more challenging for community-based organizations to provide services to their constituents.

“Our goal is to support operations and help them bridge the gaps exposed by the pandemic and find innovative ways to provide services, both remotely and safely onsite,” he said.

Barriers to participation of racially and ethnically underrepresented patients in clinical trials include: (1) mistrust, (2) fear, (3) lack of comfort with the clinical trial process, (4) lack of information about clinical trials, (5) logistical constraints such as time and out-of-pocket expenses. In addition, social and economic factors (the social determinants of health) may negatively impact patients’ willingness to participate in clinical research.

Meaningful patient and community engagement can help achieve diversity as well as advance both science and patient care. In addition to helping empower patients to be more active participants in their medical care, appropriate and meaningful engagement between trusted community stakeholders (participants, patients, caregivers, patient advocacy organizations and leaders) and researchers (clinical trial sponsors, investigators, clinical research sites) can help effectively address the perspectives and priorities that are important for patients — those who will be impacted by the research.

In order to gain insights about what matters to patients and their communities, we engage with patients and their advocates through activities such as patient advisory panels and expert input consultations. These engagements have been especially helpful for: (1) increasing awareness and education to build trust and increase understand-

ing of the importance and benefits of clinical trials; (2) increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups to participate in clinical trials by removing barriers (i.e., logistics, out-of-pocket costs); and (3) increasing partnerships with minority investigators and others who serve communities of color to help improve the diversity of participants -- as well as to better demonstrate the safety and efficacy of new drugs, vaccines, and other therapeu-

tic and diagnostic products in all population groups.

Mistrust of research and the fear of being a “guinea pig” are among the most significant barriers to clinical trial participation for underrepresented groups. While the ultimate decision regarding clinical trial participation rests with the patient, that decision may be influenced by family, close friends, and other trusted individuals and groups in their own commu-

nities. Therefore, building trust between researchers and trusted community stakeholders (faith-based organizations, nonprofit and civic groups, community leaders, patient advocacy groups, community healthcare providers, etc.) is also critical for overcoming barriers. Furthermore, while altruism and other factors are important considerations, patients and their families are usually most concerned with obtaining the best treatment.

Therefore, reassuring patients about the importance of their health and safety, reinforcing that their health will be closely monitored, and including family members in decision-making can increase comfort with the clinical trial process and help build trust. Effective and meaningful community engagement should be long-term rather than based solely on specific trial or project needs.

In summary, increasing research participant diversity continues to be a challenge for industry, academia and other sponsors. However, during this deeply troubling moment for our nation, the confluence of two major catastrophes — the COVID-19 pandemic and community unrest due to racial injustice and inequities — that have amplified disparities and the impact of health inequities, provides perhaps an opportunity to make real and sustainable progress toward achieving diversity and inclusion in clinical research as well as improving healthcare access and outcomes for all communities.

We are moving with unprecedented speed, but we will not compromise our safety standards. We will release a vaccine only after appropriate scientific review of safety and effectiveness and approval or authorization by regulatory authorities.

NEWS Half of People with Food Allergies Report At Least One Allergic Reaction Each Year FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), the world’s leading non-governmental organization engaged in food allergy advocacy and the largest private funder of food allergy research, together with the Center for Food Allergy & Asthma Research (CFAAR) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, recently published a new study in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice (JACI: In Practice), “Understanding Food Related Allergic Reactions through a US National Patient Registry.” The study explores the frequency of food-related reactions and the motivation for intentional exposure to a known food allergen and found that more than 50 percent of those with food allergies report having at least one food-related allergic reaction per year.

“With half of the people with food allergies reporting one allergic reaction a year and over a third reporting multiple reactions, we need to better understand the causes to help with prevention,” said study co-author Dr. Ruchi Gupta, director of CFAAR, professor of pediatrics at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, and physician at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. “Very little data exists on the frequency and context of food-related allergic reactions and this study shows us that more research is needed.”

New Study: College Faculty and Administrators Feel Prepared to Teach Online U.S. higher education faculty and administrators agree that they are prepared to teach online this fall, and while questions remain, they are optimistic about the future of higher education, according to the second edition of the Digital Learning Pulse Survey, an ongoing fourpart series to better understand the needs of colleges in the wake of the transformative disruption brought on by COVID-19.

The survey of 887 faculty and administrators at 597 institutions was conducted by Bay View Analytics on behalf of the Online Learning Consortium (OLC), WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET), University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA), Canadian Digital Learning Research Association (CDLRA) and primary partner and underwriter Cengage, the largest U.S.-based education and technology company serving the college market.

“Compared to our initial research in April, this second survey shows a marked increase in the level of confidence of higher education faculty and administrators.

A host of professional development resources have been made available and educators have put considerable time and effort into preparing for teaching in the new COVID-19 reality, and it shows,” said Jeff Seaman, lead researcher and director of Bay View Analytics.

Additional survey findings: Teaching Online – l The overwhelming majority of faculty (84 percent) and administrators (96 percent) agree that they are prepared to teach online this fall. l Faculty at two-year and fouryear private colleges feel more prepared to teach online than faculty at four-year public institutions – 88 percent versus 81 percent. l Faculty and administrators at all types of institutions had access to multiple types of professional development – webinars, selfpaced trainings, online resources, and more – and found them to be effective.

Confidence in the Future – l Nearly half of faculty and administrators across all institution types are optimistic about the future of higher education, but there is still room for improvement. l Future of Higher Education: l Administrators - 46 percent optimistic, 23 percent pessimistic

and 31 percent neutral l Faculty - 42 percent optimistic, 31 percent pessimistic and 27 percent neutral l Educators are also optimistic about their personal future role in higher education, with administrators feeling more positive. l Personal Role in Higher Education: l Administrators - 57 percent optimistic, 15 percent pessimistic and 28 percent neutral l Faculty - 42 percent optimistic, 21 percent pessimistic and 37 percent neutral “When higher education moved to remote learning this spring, companies like Cengage quickly opened up access to their digital platforms and provided professional development training, resources, office hours and more to help faculty and institutions feel ready to lead their students in an online environment,” said Fernando Bleichmar, general manager for Higher Education and Skills at Cengage. “These resources clearly made a difference, but there are many questions that need to be answered as to how higher education will evolve to meet the needs of students in the future.”

“The unanticipated sudden switch from in-person to remote learning left many feeling unprepared, but fortunately our network jumped into action and provided peers with the best practices, guidance and resources they needed to succeed,” said Jennifer Mathes, Ph.D., CEO of the Online Learning Consortium. “From Washington to Florida and everywhere in between, we are encouraged to see faculty and administrators turning challenges presented by the pandemic into a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve access and quality for learners around the country.”

“What is most striking about the findings are the faculty perceptions of how effective professional development they received was for their online teaching. Compared to the sentiments expressed in the 2020 spring semester, the vast majority of faculty reported feeling prepared to teach online to some extent in the fall,” said Nicole Johnson, Research Director of the Canadian Digital Learning Research Association.
