A Local Gamer Turns His Hobby Into Lucrative Business Continued from page 1

Kevin Fair always enjoyed playing video games and making friends while playing them. He turned that love of playing video games into a business, I Play Games.

Fair graduated from Morgan Park High School and the LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tenn. After he graduated from college, he worked at an accounting firm. It was then that he started to think about what he was passionate about and how he wanted to start his own business.

Fair started to reflect on what he liked to do. He had a moment where he asked himself, “if I could do whatever I wanted to do and get paid for it, what would that job look like?” It was really easy for him because he liked video games.

Competitive video games were not really mainstream at the time. Fair hosted video game tournaments in high school and decided to go back to that.

“The more I thought about who I was as a person, someone who brought the fun to events and made ways to create icebreakers, socialize with people; and it was video games,” he said.

Fair moved into the space super green.

He didn’t know anything about starting or running a business, but he did know how to start events. He took those experiences with starting events and made gaming tournaments professional.

‘I Play Games’ provides video game equipment rental, consulting, planning, and staffing for video game events. Fair and his team do their best to provide experiences where people have fun at the events.

The pandemic and quarantine really caused people to look at alternative ways to have fun.

Esports and competitive video games have been around for about 40 years. Fair believes its growth is because more kids are talking about their experiences in video games.

Before it was a local activity and now it is a global activity, with connectivity to the inter-

net. STEM and STEAM also have made way to Esports being embraced more.

“I fixed my very first computer when my regular Nintendo broke at home. For me it was like, ‘hey, I’m going to take this apart and figure out why it’s not working anymore.’

I don’t think we had the context of what I was doing in 1992, which was that I put my hands on my very first motherboard as a kid,” he said.

Fair puts this query to parents: Can you tell me any other thing that inspires kids to problem solve without any inherent reward?

Video games get kids to sit down, read and apply their own type of solution to it. Fair said adults are becoming more keen to children using problem solving in video games.

The Surge Esports Arena is set to open in Bronzeville in the future. Fair is excited about the project. ‘I Play Games’ travels all around the country to put on video game tournaments. Fair has seen the value and efficacy for having an Esports Arena in Chicago. It has the potential to be a great draw for the City and

enables the city to host national and international tournaments.

Fair wants to see how everyone will be included in the process of building and having an esports arena in the city.

During the workshops in schools, Fair and his ‘I Play Games’ team talk about career pathways. There is a value in young children and teenagers learning about the gaming industry. Fair tries to find out what students like to do and from there, using the love of video games as a way to direct their career path.

“In order to find my career in the space, I had to reflect on who Kevin Fair was. I could think back on bringing my Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast to high school and trying to organize these Madden and 2K tournaments.

I realized how much fun building a community was,” he said. “When I became an adult, I built a community again and I didn’t even plan on it.”

Sculptures of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Congressman John Lewis Unveiled in NYC NEW YORK PRNewswire -- Confront Art— which connects artists to social justice causes to create public art displays—is announcing today its inaugural exhibition SEEINJUSTICE, which will be open to the public beginning October 1 in Union Square. McBride Sisters SHE CAN Fund receives $2 Million Facebook’s donation will provide 100 Black women entrepreneurs with $20K in Facebook advertising credits and access to its Elevate program.

originally established the McBride Sisters SHE CAN Fund in 2019 to promote the professional development of women in the wine industry in a concerted effort to help close the gender and race gap. In the wake of COVID-19, the Sisters pivoted the Fund’s 2020 efforts to support Black-and-womenowned small businesses across a number of industries. This year, scholarships will support Black women entrepreneurs in the traditionally male-dominated fields of wine & spirits, hospitality and finance, and in the areas of career growth and professional advancement through continued education and professional certifications. The decision to focus on these industries is based on recent unsettling statistics regarding women in the workforce, which have only been exacerbated by the pandemic.

Facebook recently released its latest Global State of Small Business Report, which shows how women-owned small and midsized businesses have been disproportionally affected by the pandemic. Globally, 20% of women-led small and midsized businesses reported being

closed, versus 16% of those led by men.

Facebook’s contributions will support 2020 and 2021 grantees of the SHE CAN Fund.

Through Facebook Elevate, participating businesses will receive access to their own Facebook marketing expert through Elevate Circles, Facebook’s 6-week mentorship program, as well as business coaching from one of Facebook’s Elevate partners. Grantees will also be encouraged to visit the Elevate Hub and join the Facebook Elevate Group to gain access to free digital advertising resources and build community with other business owners, creators, community leaders, non-profits and jobseekers.

Illinois Medical District Urges Sickle Cell Awareness PRNewswire -- The Illinois Medical District (IMD) and American Red Cross of Illinois are partnering to draw attention to sickle cell disease and its treatment. During National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, the organizations are calling on Chicagoans—especially minority communities affected by sickle cell disease—to donate blood to treat conditions such as sickle cell anemia and reduce disparities in health care for minorities.

Sickle cell anemia is one form of an inherited blood disease. The sickle cell trait causes red blood cells to turn from a soft, round shape to a firm, sickle form. The abnormally shaped cells can block blood flow to bones, muscles and organs, causing episodes of extreme pain. In some cases, such a sickle cell crisis can be life-threatening.

Every ethnic and racial group includes people living with the sickle cell trait, but incidence is highest in the Black community. Chica-

go’s Near West Side, where IMD is located, draws from African, Asian, Latin American and Mediterranean communities with the genetic sickle cell trait. Infants get sickle cell tests at birth, but minority communities often have limited continuous access to quality maternity care and adult diagnostics.

“Sickle cell disease is an invisible and enduring health disparity in the U.S.,” said Kate Schellinger, IMD interim executive director. “The Illinois Medical District is fortunate to include not only prominent research and treatment centers for sickle cell disease, but also an American Red Cross blood donation center. People who donate blood can alleviate the suffering of sickle cell patients and contribute to their long-term health.”

Blood transfusions are important in the care that UI Health, Rush and other medical centers give sickle cell patients. Individuals with sickle cell

disease can require thousands of blood transfusions throughout their lifetime to treat complications of the disease. Frequent transfusions make finding compatible blood products more challenging because patients develop an immune response to transfused blood.

In these cases, minority donors are life savers. Their blood can contain distinct blood protein structures or antigens that are the most compatible for patients with sickle cell disease. Blood banks may lack diverse blood supplies. The IMD and Red Cross encourage healthy community members of all minority groups to donate blood.

The need for blood is not limited to patients with sickle cell disease. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion, including women with childbirth complications, people fighting cancer and trauma patients in emergency rooms.

How to Help the IMD-Red Cross Blood Drive Shortages during the pandemic make blood donation more critical right now. A diverse supply of blood is vital to treat conditions from cancer to complications from childbirth, surgeries, and trauma.

“As COVID-19 cases increase, blood donations assure that hospitals and

patients have continued access to vital blood products,” Schellinger said.

Hospitals most often fall short of type O blood in emergencies.

Fifty-one percent of Black individuals are type O. For this reason, Black donors play a critical role in meeting the constant need for blood.

“As an organization dedicated to alleviating suffering, the Red Cross is committed to the health and well-being of all communities,” Roldán said. “Maintaining a diverse blood supply is critical to improving health outcomes for all patients.”

Grilled Turkey Club with Orange Juice-Infused Aioli

(Family Features) With a return to busy fall routines, it can be challenging for many families to find the time to sit down at the table for nutritious meals.

Lawyer: You are responsible for the past due rent once the moratorium ends. What will happen is the current landlord will file for eviction against you, even if you have vacated the property. An eviction is not just removal of a tenant, but also the lawsuit a landlord files to obtain a monetary judgment against a former tenant for unpaid rent. If you do not pay your unpaid rent, a monetary judgment will be issued against you.

At that point, it will be up to your new landlord as to whether this affects honoring your new lease. It should not, unless there is a provision in the contract you signed that allows the new landlord to cancel the contract. The new apartment will not be notified. They will only find out if you tell them or if they run a background check. If you have already moved in then you will not have to move out. This could only happen if the landlord wants to cancel before you move in. In addition to the unpaid rent, you could also be ordered to pay the court filing fees and attorney’s fees. It usually comes to a couple hundred more.

Question: Must I pay an unreasonable rent increase? –Cindy H. Lawyer: In short, yes, it is within your landlord’s right to legally raise your rent. However, there are a few stipulations surrounding rent increases, and they can vary by state. Unless otherwise stated in your lease agreement, your landlord cannot raise your rent before your lease is up.

So, if you have signed a year-long lease, your landlord is only allowed to increase your rent once that period is up. On the other hand, if you have a month-to-month lease, your landlord is allowed to increase it every month, given that they provide you ample notice (usually 30 days).

If you are wondering how much a landlord can increase your rent, you might not like this answer. In many states, there is no maximum amount. This means that, unless you are in a rent-controlled city or building, your landlord can raise the rent by as much as they want per year or month, depending on your lease duration. Check your local laws to see if there is a set amount or maximum. Most states require your landlord to serve you the rent increase notice in writing. If it is given verbally, look up your specific state’s law to see if that is the legal way to do it. The rent increase must not be done in a discriminatory or retaliatory manner. For example, if you have complained about habitability conditions to an outside organization, your landlord cannot retaliate by raising your rent.
