The Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation is preparing to host it’s 5th Annual Jack Lanigan Sr. Memorial Big Shoes Award event. The event will take place on Sept. 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ravisloe Country, 18231 Park Ave., in Homewood.

The Big Shoes Award was recently renamed to be the Jack Lanigan, Sr. Memorial Award in honor of the first Big Shoes Award recipient.

Also new this year is a second award known as the No Stone Left Unturned Award.

The Jack Lanigan, Sr. Memorial Award, formerly known as the Big Shoes Award, celebrates the advanced manufacturing community in the Chicago Southland area and specifically those who actively support

education and workforce programs.

This year’s 2019 award recipient is Nancy Wilson, CEO of Morrison Container Handling Solutions, who was also recently named one of Crain’s 2019 Notable Women in Manufacturing.

Morrison Container Handling Solutions, located in Glenwood, was founded in 1971 and is an industry leader in the innovative design and manufacture of custom container handling systems, timing screws, and change parts for the packaging industry. According to their website, if something comes in a bottle or a can, it is likely that Morrison Container Handling Solutions has touched it at some point along the way.

Wilson has been with the company, which was founded by her husband, since 2011 and she assumed full operations responsibility

when she became CEO in 2012. In addition to working with her husband, Wilson’s son, Chris, also serves as the vice president of operations for Morrison Container Handling Solutions, according to information on the Morrison Container Handling Solutions website.

This year, special recognition will be given to Rick Bryant, senior advisor to Congresswoman Robin Kelly. Bryant will receive the No Stone Unturned Award for his leadership in pursuing the possibility of creating the South Suburban Airport. He will be the first person to receive this award.

“Just as Midway and O’Hare spearheaded Illinois’ economic investment and transportation growth over the past century, the South Suburban Airport will encourage innovation and perpetuate prosperity for this century.

While it’s taken us decades, and some would agree longer, to get here, the time has finally come,” said Congresswoman Kelly. “The South Suburban Airport is a unique, once in a lifetime game-changer. It has the potential and promise to be the safest, greenest, most innovative and most customer-focused airport in North America.”

Just as Congresswoman Kelly has been publicly pushing for the South Suburban Airport, Bryant has been behind the scenes working tirelessly to move the needle on this matter, which is why he will be receiving the No Stone Left Unturned Award.

Also during the upcoming event, two Rich East High School students and their coach, Mike Wilson, will give a robotics demonstration from their Manufacturing, Engineering, and Robotics Program.

We found many similarities between the patients. The American patients had, on average, $422 to contribute to abortions that cost around $1775. They were also young, single parents of two. These American low-income abortion-seekers traveled, on average, 140 miles for their procedure.

In Northern Ireland, Catholics and Protestants are frequently segregated, with some neighborhoods divided by barbed wire fences, reflecting deep historical conflicts between the faiths.

Ninety percent of Northern Ireland’s 1.87 million people are Christian, with Protestants, once the solid majority there, now slightly outnumbering Catholics. But members of these faiths remain divided decades after a 1997 peace agreement meant to end sectarian violence in the region.

Northern Irish politicians do agree on one thing lately, The New York Times reports: banning abortion.

It is illegal in Northern Ireland to end a pregnancy unless it endangers the mother’s life, though 65% of Northern Ireland’s population supports abortion. As a result, women who seek abortions typically go to England, where abortion is legal.

But, as my research on cases of low-income abortion patients shows, not everyone can afford abortion expenses. That includes women in the United States, where restrictive abortion laws mean the nearest clinic may be many miles away.

Unaffordable abortion In one 2017 study, I examined data of over 2,300 patients in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man who had received financial assistance from abortion funds, charitable or-

ganizations that help people access abortions they can’t afford.

Though the Republic of Ireland legalized abortion in May 2018, leaving Northern Ireland as the only nation on the British Isles with an abortion ban, our research took place when abortion was illegal in both nations.

The average abortion expense for our sample was US$585, while patients had on average just $307 at their disposal to pay for the procedure. Eighty-four percent of these abortion-seekers were single, 34% were age 21 or under, and 8% were minors. They had, on average, two children each.

This profile is comparable to that of the almost 4,000 abortion fund service recipients in the United States whose data we also studied.

Penalizing the poor Recent changes to U.S. family planning policy highlight another parallel between Northern Ireland and the United States: the influence of religion in reproductive health policy.

In mid-August, Planned Parenthood announced its withdrawal from Title X – a Nixon-era family planning program for low-income patients – due to a new requirement that Title X medical providers cannot also offer abortions.

Title X funds have never been used to pay for abortion services. But by eliminating funding for facilities that offer abortions in addition to other reproductive services, the Trump administration rule may leave millions of low-income Planned Parenthood patients without family planning care.

The new rule is part of an old American effort, promoted by Christian activists and lawmakers, to make legal abortions as difficult as possible to obtain.

The new Title X rule builds on the 1976 Hyde Amendment, which prevents federal

dollars from paying for abortion expenses.

Low-income women relying on programs like Medicaid for health insurance must pay outof-pocket for abortion, reallocating money that would otherwise go to food and rent.

While most manage to access a wanted abortion, research shows, some poor American women end up carrying unwanted pregnancies to term against their will.

Many states in the southern U.S. – a conservative region where 76% of residents identify as Christian – require a waiting period of up to three days for patients to “reflect” on abortion decisions. In practice, that means two mandatory in-person trips to the clinic and higher medical costs.

In Tennessee, where there is a 48-hour abortion waiting period, my recent research found that abortion-seekers from the mountainous Appalachian region reported financial and personal strain, as well as problems arranging child care and transportation. Appalachia is a rural, remote region where health care access is already compromised. The 48hour waiting period likely puts legal abortion out of reach for some.

Religion in health policy Many nations in Europe can be classified as predominantly Christian, much like the American South and Northern Ireland. But few allow religious ideology to influence their reproductive health laws.

NEWS $4 Million Grant Supports Behavioral And Mental Health Services For South Suburban Youth

Children’s Research Triangle along with the Partnership for Resilience recently announced they have received a 5-year, $4 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as part of the Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children’s Health Grant Program (Project LAUNCH). Over the five years, the grant will directly impact mental and behavioral health services for children in the south suburbs.

Children’s Research Triangle has been operating since 1976 and became incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1998. The organization operates with the vision that all children, no matter what challenges or disabilities they may face, deserve to have a safe and nurturing childhood and to receive the support they need to lead fulfilled lives, according to information provided

by Children’s Research Triangle.

Partnership for Resilience is a

cross-sector initiative that works to address childhood trauma, increase access to primary care, and strengthen family engagement in the southern suburbs of Cook County. The organization aims to build resilience among children, build sustainable community partnerships, create resources, training, and education programs, and advocate for research-based policies that further its mission, according to information from the Partnership for Resilience website.

“The Partnership for Resilience works with 11 Southland public school districts with over 24,000 students to help them meet the needs of children and teens who have experienced trauma. Through Project LAUNCH and our partnership with CRT, we hope to help thousands of additional Southland residents access behavioral health and parenting resources,” said Tom Lenz, coordinator of the Partnership for Resilience.

Children’s Research Triangle and Partnership for Resilience are one of only fifteen grant recipients across the nation. This grant will allow them to create programs and services that immediately impact the area, which they say is in dire need of mental and behavioral health services for youth.

“Southern Cook County residents, especially children, struggle with a lack of access to proper behavioral and mental health services.

This grant enables us to quickly initiate programs that provide desperately needed services which directly impact children and families in the region,” said Dr. Linda Schwartz, chief executive officer of Children’s Research Triangle.

This grant will allow the two organizations to offer community partner training, where individuals learn about screening and assessing children in need of mental health services, and they will be able to operate a workforce training initiative

for underemployed residents.

The grant will also allow Family Navigator Services to assist community partners with making appropriate referrals, early education, early care, and home visiting programs,

and a public awareness campaign to improve knowledge about early childhood development, screenings, and treatment, according to information provided by Children’s Research Triangle.

CDC data underscore urgent need for new HHS plan to increase HPV vaccination rate to 80% nationwide During 2012-2016, an average of 43,999 HPV-associated cancers were reported each year, according to a new study published recently in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). Among the estimated 34,800 cancers probably caused by HPV, 92 percent are attributable to the HPV types that are included in the HPV vaccine and could be prevented if HPV vaccine recommendations were followed, according to the report.

HPV is a common virus that can lead to certain types of cancers in men and women.

It causes cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and oropharynx (back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils). The HPV vaccine protects against the types of HPV that most commonly cause these cancers.

“A future without HPV cancers is within reach, but urgent action is needed to improve vaccine coverage rates,” said ADM Brett P. Giroir, MD, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health.

“Increasing HPV vaccination coverage to 80% has been and will continue to be a priority initiative for HHS, and we will continue to work with our governmental and private sector partners to make this a reality.”

able to the HPV types in the currently available HPV vaccine. This report marks the first time these data are available at the state-level.

Key findings l During 2012-2016, an estimated average of 34,800 HPV-attributable cancers were diagnosed each year. l The most common cancers were cervical (9,700) and oropharyngeal cancer (12,600). l The number of cancers attributable to HPV types targeted by the vaccine ranged by state from 40 in Wyoming to 3,270 in California. l Oropharyngeal cancer was the most common cancer attributable to the vaccine types in all states, except in Texas where cervical cancer was most common. l In Alaska, the District of Columbia, New Mexico, and New York, the estimates of oropharyngeal and cervical cancers attributable to the types in the currently available HPV vaccine were the same.

Not all teens vaccinated CDC recommends that all preteens get the HPV vaccine when they are 11 or 12 years old to protect them before they are ever exposed to the virus. However, additional new data also released recently in the MMWR show little progress toward increasing HPV vaccination rates among teens ages 13- to 17-years.

These data, collected as part of the 2018 National Immunization Survey Teen (NIS-Teen) show a 4 percentage point increase in HPV

Americans Put Their Cars First: Two-Thirds Service Their Vehicle More Often Than They Go to the Dentist While the temperatures may be starting to cool down, things are just starting to heat up between Americans and their cars as the majority admit to having strong feelings of love toward their personal vehicles, according to a new Cars. com (NYSE: CARS) national survey. The survey uncovered that nearly three-quarters of Americans (73 percent) love their car a lot, and more than two-thirds (69 percent) have a significant amount of pride in their vehicle.

But just how deep does Americans’ love for their cars run? The majority of respondents are more concerned with maintaining the health of their vehicle than their own oral health — nearly two-thirds of respondents (63 percent) confess they service their vehicle more often than they go to the dentist. Americans’ preventive health care comes second, too, as more than half of respondents (57 percent) say they service their vehicle more than they see a doctor.

HPV vaccination rates were higher in teens whose parents reported receiving a recommendation from their child’s healthcare professional. Consistently, data shows that physicians play a key role in educating parents and are the most trusted source of information for parents of pre-teens eligible for vaccination.

CDC and state health departments continue to encourage health care professionals to talk to parents and provide them with information on the benefits of vaccination to prevent cancer and save lives.

“The HPV vaccine continues to be the best way to protect our young boys and girls from developing certain cancers, including cervical cancer, “said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “This new data shows 1 in 4 parents who received a medical recommendation for the HPV vaccine chose not to have their child vaccinated. The HPV vaccine is safe, and we encourage parents to get their pre-teens vaccinated and take the next step to prevent their children from developing HPV-related cancer later in life.”

HPV vaccine an option for older people The HPV vaccine is recommended for everyone through age 26 if they did not get vaccinated when they were younger. Vaccination is not recommended for everyone older

than 26 years. However, some adults ages 27 through 45 years who are not vaccinated for HPV may decide to be vaccinated after speaking with their doctor about their risk for new HPV infections and the possible benefits of vaccination. HPV vaccination in this age range provides less benefit, as more people have likely been exposed to HPV. In addition to HPV vaccination, cervical cancer screening is recommended for women ages 21-65.

“Every year in the United States, HPV causes cancer in men and women, but we have the power to change this,” explained Lisa C. Richardson, MD, MPH, director of CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. “Cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the U.S. The HPV vaccine and cervical cancer screening have made it one of the most preventable cancers.

HPV vaccination is cancer prevention. We can protect our loved ones with the HPV vaccine.”

Women ages 21-29 years can be screened with a Pap test every three years. In addition to the Pap test, a test called the HPV test looks for HPV infection. Among women ages 30 to 65 years there are three strategies: (1) Pap test alone every three years, (2) the HPV test used with the Pap test every five years, or (3) the HPV test alone every five years. The HPV test can provide additional information when Pap test results are unclear for women ages 21 and older.

Legal abortion is similarly acceptable throughout Western Europe, Pew polling finds, with public support at 60% in Portugal, 65% in Italy and 72% in Spain – all majority Catholic nations.

Catholic Ireland, where even condoms used to be banned, recently voted to legalize abortion in the first trimester. The momentous decision was spurred by the death of a 31-year-old woman who was denied an abortion after miscarriage.

Evidence-based policies Irish voters’ willingness to modernize abortion laws against Catholic teaching reflects a reality that my research lays bare: Reproductive health policies based on ideology rather than scientific evidence fail to serve the public.

Studies show that abortion rates across countries are similar regardless of legality.

So making abortions illegal or inaccessible generally does not stop women from getting them.

Wealthier abortion patients with adequate resources will overcome costs and other barriers that restrictive abortions law throw in front of them. Poor abortion-seekers are more likely to seek unsafe, even deadly, procedures.

Research from Latin America confirms this. This socially conservative, heavily Catholic region has the world’s most restrictive abortion laws. It also has the highest rates of clandestine abortions.

Religious freedom is critical in any free society, and faith provides a vital source of comfort for many people. But evidence shows that religion can be a burden, not a blessing, when it comes to reproductive health.
