The state of Illinois also has been supportive with its Illinois National Health Service Corps State Loan Repayment Program.

“I’ve recruited for advanced practitioners because of that benefit,” Rogalski said. “It’s a significant benefit that our urban areas cannot offer.”

The program’s goal is to assist communities in recruiting health professionals willing to practice full-time or half-time in federal health professional shortage areas. Program funds are used to repay educational loans of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse midwives, dentists and psychiatrists who agree to serve full-time or half-time in federally designated HPSAs in Illinois without regard for their ability to pay.

SPRINGFIELD – Minimum wage workers in Illinois will see a boost in their hourly pay to $12 per hour starting Jan. 1, while tenants in affordable housing units will be allowed to keep pets. Those are just some of the more than 300 new laws that take effect in the new year. The minimum wage increase is actually the result of a 2019 law that phases in a state minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025. This year, it will increase by one dollar to $12 anThehour.law allowing public housing tenants to keep pets is the result of Senate Bill 154, by Sen. Linda Holmes, D-Aurora, and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego. It provides that tenants of multifamily housing units that are acquired, built or renovated with money from the Illinois Affordable Housing Trust Fund may keep up to two cats or one dog weighing less than 50 pounds. It applies to residents of housing units that are designated as affordable housing for low- and very-lowincome families. The bill passed both chambers in its final form on May 30 and Gov. JB Pritzker signed it into law Aug. 6. Other new laws include: Vehicle taxes: SB58 raises the private vehicle tax, which is a sales tax paid on the purchase of vehicles, by $75 for each model year where the purchase price is less than $15,000 and by $100 for vehicles priced above that amount. However, the registration fee for trailers weighing less than 3,000 pounds will drop to $36 instead of $118. College admissions: HB226, establishing the Higher Education Fair Admissions Act, prohibits public colleges and universities from requiring applicants to submit SAT, ACT or other standardized test scores as part of the admissions process, although prospective students may choose to submit them if they wish.Drug prices: SB1682 requires pharmacies to post a notice informing consumers that they may request current pharmacy retail prices at the point of sale. FOID card changes: HB562 enacts several changes to the Firearm Owner Identification card law. Among other things, it provides for a streamlined renewal process for FOID cards and Concealed Carry Licenses for people who voluntarily submit fingerprint records. It also allows the Illinois State Police to issue a combined FOID card and Concealed Carry License to qualified applicants, and it establishes a new Violent Crime Intelligence Task Force to take enforcement action against people with revoked FOID cards.Student mental health: HB576 and SB1577 allow students in Illinois up to five excused absences to attend to their mental or behavioral health without providing a medical note. Those students will be given an opportunity to make up any work they missed during the first absence and, after using a second mental health day, may be referred to the appropriate school support personnel.Officialflags: HB605 requires state agencies and institutions to purchase Illinois and American flags that are made in the United States. Hair styles: SB817 prohibits discrimination in schools against individuals on the grounds of wearing natural or ethnic hairstyles, which include dreadlocks, braids, twists and Lemonadeafros.stands: SB119 prohibits public health authorities from regulating or shutting down lemonade stands or similar operations that are operated by children under the age of 16. Known as “Hayli’s Law,” it was inspired by 12-year-old Hayli Martinez, whose lemonade stand in Kankakee was shut down by local officials.Juneteenth: HB3922 recognizes June 19, or “Juneteenth,” as an official state holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. In June, President Joe Biden also signed a bill designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Trina Casner, president and chief executive officer of Pana Community Hospital and IHA board member, said recruiting for rural health care has been a challenge since she started her role in 2012.But one aspect that has evolved is residency programs for physicians have expanded training to include training in rural areas.“So, they can get some experience and exposure to what it’s like practicing medicine in rural areas, which might be attractive to some of them if they know how it can be a little different than practicing in an urban setting,” Casner said. Those benefits include autonomy, work-life balance, flexibili ty and culture, she said. Both hospital chiefs said providing a supportive culture for staff is critical for retention and recruitment, especially when it comes to pandemic burnout. “We’re really focused on their health and well-being, making sure they have resources that they might need from a behavioral health standpoint, counseling standpoint, just making sure that we stay engaged with them,” Rogalski said. Casner, who grew up in Pana, said her hospital provides a recruitment bonus to employees, as they’re some of the best recruiters.“And because if they’re happy here, then they’ll share that with their friends and family,” she said, adding on the retention side, the hospital ensures their benefit package is as good or better than surrounding health care employers.

Suburban Cook County voters may now apply for their Mail Ballots in the November 8, 2022, Gubernatorial Election through the Cook County Clerk’s Office website, according to the Office of Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough. Any registered suburban Cook County voter may request a Mail Ballot using the online application at cookcounty clerk.com/VoteByMail. Ballots will be mailed to those who have applied in September - in advance of the November 8 election.“Voting By Mail has become increasingly popular in recent years and it’s clear that voters enjoy the simple and convenient option of casting their ballot from the comfort of their own home,” Yarbrough said. “What makes the process even more accessible is the ability to request your ballot online. Voters can take their time and research candidates and referenda before casting their vote for our democracy.” Voters may also download, print, and sign a paper application to mail into the Clerk’s Office to request a Mail Ballot. The completed Mail Ballot Application should be sent to: Cook County Clerk’s Office, Mail Voting Unit, 69 W. Washington St., Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60602. The deadline to apply for a Mail Ballot is November 3.

Two of the largest impacts on workforce include stress from the pandemic and a shortage of health care professionals, said Ted Rogalski, Illinois Health and Hospital Association (IHA) Board chairman and administrator of Genesis Medical Center, Aledo. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the U.S. is expected to have a shortage of up to 48,000 primary care physicians by 2034. And the challenges of recruitment and retention in rural areas is even more challenging. “We had lost a physician and it took us two and a half years to replace that individual. This was pre-COVID,” Rogalski told FarmWeek. “Now we have another opening because we have a physician that’s going to be retiring. We have been looking for six months now. It’s just really difficult to recruit physicians, espe cially to our rural communities.”

BISMARCK, N.D., PRNewswire -- As the summer sun begins to dip below the horizon earlier each day, fields of sunny yellow sunflowers will start to blanket the North Dakota landscape. Throughout August the golden flowers bloom ubiquitously throughout the state, and North Dakota Tourism invites visitors to experience these awe-inspiring fields. For visitors planning a picture-perfect trip, North Dakota Tourism has launched the state’s 2022 Sunflow er Blooms Guide detailing the location of 20 stunning sunflower fields. Weekly bloom updates will highlight the progress of vibrant yellows as they sweep across the state. In addition, Field of Sunflowers, one of North Dakota’s Legendary Road Trips, is the perfect way to make the most of your remaining summer days and to check out the seas of brilliant yellow hues. “As one of the nation’s largest producers of sunflow ers, North Dakota has a Legendary reputation as the best place in the United States to experience the vast sunflower blooms,” said North Dakota Department of Commerce Tourism and Marketing Director Sara Otte Coleman. “Our golden fields attract visitors from all over who are cap tivated by the bright flowers and warm hospitality found across North Dakota each summer.” North Dakota came to be a leader in growing the fan favorite flowers after Ukrainian immigrants settled in the state via the Homestead Act of 1867. Sunflowers have long been a significant part of Ukraine’s economy - the country produces upwards 70 to 80 percent of the global sunflower oil exports - and proudly recognize it as the nation’s offi cial flower. When Ukrainians settled in North Dakota, they brought their sunflower crops with them and cultivated the land into sweeping fields of brilliant yellow flowers. Sunflower fans chasing photo opportunities should keep in mind the following tips for capturing the iconic blooms: In general, landowners and farmers don’t mind visitors stopping to look at the fields as long as you are respectful and don’t enter or drive into the fields. Looking for that perfect golden hour shot? Arrive early so you can scout your location for the optimal setting to capture your just-after sunrise or just-before sunset pic. It’s a race against time, so you’ll want to be set up and ready to go when the light turns that perfect hue. Phone apps such as Sun Seeker or Sun Surveyor can help visitors gauge the timing in any location. Happen to visit on a cloudy day? You’re in luck, as those are often the best days to capture vivid close-up shots. Share your love for the sunny bloom and tag your pho tos and videos on social media using #BeNDLegendary. As one of the top two sunflower producing states an nually, North Dakota raises an impressive 40 percent of the nation’s sunflowers. The state is also the top producer of the edible or “confection” sunflower seeds in the U.S. Visitors with a taste for sunflowers should scoop up a bag (or two!) of Wahpeton, North Dakota’s Giants Snacks sunflower seeds in original or a variety of flavors, and try the deliciously creamy SunButter made from roasted sunflower seeds in Fargo.North Dakota Tourism is also bringing the scrump tious seeds to the fields with packets of sunflower seeds in mailboxes for an on-the-road snack. More sunflower recipes, videos and little-known facts are available at Brighten Your Day with the Amazing Sunflower. “This is an extremely concerning trend and the public needs to know so they can be vigilant in protecting themselves,” Sheriff Dart said. “The Sher iff’s Office will continue to work closely with other law enforcement agencies and engage automakers to reduce dangerous car thefts and carjackings in CookTheCounty.”increases are believed to be connected to the sharing of videos on social media that demonstrate how to start these vehicles without a key. Thieves appear to be targeting unoccupied vehicles that require a physical key, not a starter button. For more detailed information about which vehicles may be susceptible to this type of theft, owners should contact the manufac turer directly. The Sheriff’s Office is encouraging owners of Kia and Hyundai vehicles to consider taking steps to reduce the threat of motor vehicle theft. Such measures include the installation of aftermarket immobilization devices (otherwise known as kill switches that render the vehicle inoperable without a separate key), car alarms with motion detection, steering wheel locking devic es, or vehicle tracking systems.

Chicago’s new safe digging ‘ambassadog’ is Finnegan, a rescue pup who once lived on the streets and now has a closet full of fancy clothes

Chicago — Peoples Gas today unveiled Finnegan — a dog made up of 17 different breeds who moved here from the South — as the company’s new safe digging “ambassadog.” Finnegan’s new job title was announced this morning at Lincoln Park Zoo, where the pup proudly stood before cameras. Finnegan — whose full name is Finnegan Clover Clovington (and whose shorter nickname is simply “Finn”) — has a rags-toriches backstory. He moved to Chicago from rural Mississippi after being discovered in an abandoned house. A Peoples Gas customer who lives in the Ravenswood neighborhood then met him at an adoption event and fell in love with him.On the inside, Finnegan is a mix of labrador retriever, beagle, terrier, Australian cattle dog, chow chow, rottweiler, German shepherd, and ten other breeds. On the outside, he is 100% dapper. Finnegan has his own personal collection of bowties, neckties and bandanas. He also owns a tuxedo.Finnegan has his own Instagram page, on which he can be seenmodeling his fancy duds. His account is @finnegan_clover. Finnegan became Chicago’s safe digging ambassadog after entering the Peoples Gas “Doggone it!” contest, in which customers send in photos of their dogs digging. The public then voted online to decide which pupper won — and was impressed by Finnegan’s distinguished demeanor, fierce digging, and of course his wardrobe. For the next year, Finnegan will be fea tured in Peoples Gas promotional campaigns to raise awareness about safe digging and the importance of dialing 811 at least 48 hours before starting any digging project.

Owners are also encouraged to fill out a consent form offered on the Sheriff’s Office website that enables law enforcement agencies to more quickly obtain the cooperation of vehicle manufacturers to track stolen automobiles. Vehicle owners who have signed this consent form can also obtain stickers to display on their vehicles notifying would-be thieves that the vehicle can be tracked by investigators. These stickers are available at all Cook County courthouses. In addition to these measures, vehicle owners should remember to take precautions such as parking in a garage or in well-lit or high-traffic areas, if possible, to discourage thieves from targeting their automobiles.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), announce the availability of the combined Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Record of Decision (combined Final EIS/ROD) and Final Section 4(f) Evaluation for the Red Line Extension (RLE) Project on the Far South Side of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois. Sixth Annual Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards Celebrates Young Writers Across Illinois

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the CTA, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), announce the publication of the combined Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)/Record of Decision (ROD) and Final Section 4(f) Evaluation for the RLE Project on Aug. 12. This significant milestone paves the way for the CTA to advance to the next steps of the federal New Starts funding program.

The ROD is the conclusion of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) EIS process and is the official FTA decision document regarding the proj ect’s environmental impacts and mitigation. The ROD and the Final EIS, which are combined into a single document, include a list of mitigation commitments related to the impacts identified in the Final EIS. Public and agency engagement and feedback have been vital to the develop ment and refinement of the RLE Project since the publication of the Draft EIS in 2016 and the Supplemental EA in January 2022. Community input has been and will remain essential in helping shape this project and its path forward.

In 2017, in honor of the centennial of Ms. Brooks’s birth, Illinois Human ities joined with the Poetry Foundation, Brooks Permissions, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts to revive the awards to honor the tremendous legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks, the first Black person ever to win a Pulitzer Prize, and to celebrate and amplify the words and experiences of young poets from across Illinois. In the six years since the revival of the awards, over 1,800 poems have been submitted from young poets all across the state. “The annual Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards ceremony cele brates the vibrant community of youth poets across the state of Illinois, who each year demonstrate the wisdom, power, and creativity of our state’s young people,” said Gabrielle Lyon, executive director of Illinois Humanities.

CTA Red Line Extension Project Receives ‘Record of Decision’

The RLE Project will extend Chicago’s most-traveled rail line from the ex isting terminal at 95th Street to 130th Street. The 5.6-mile extension includes four new stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue, and 130th Street. The project’s modern, efficient railcar storage yard and maintenance facility would benefit the entire Red Line. A list of the 11 locations where hard copies are available, now through Sep tember 12, and an electronic copy of the combined Final EIS/ROD and Section 4(f) Evaluation may be found on the project website at transitchicago.com/rle/ finaleis. CHICAGO – Illinois Humanities, in partnership with the Poetry Founda tion, Brooks Permissions, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, is proud to announce the winners of the 2022 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards, an annual competition for Illinois poets in grades K–12. The 25 win ners and 12 honorable mentions were chosen from a record 445 submissions representing 70 schools from across the state. The winning poets will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 20, at a public ceremony at the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Chicago. The ceremony will be hosted by Emily Lansana, and award winners will recite their poems as part of the ceremony. This year, Illinois Poet Laureate Angela Jackson will read a poem at the ceremony in honor of the winning students. Guests can RSVP to attend here. “Congratulations to the winners and honorable mentions of the Gwendo lyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “In the words of the late great Gwendolyn Brooks, ‘poetry is life distilled.’ Thank you for shar ing a slice of your lives with us. I couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of you. May you never forget the power that language has to inspire hearts, move minds, and change worlds. Here’s to the next generation of Poets Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning writers.” Gwendolyn Brooks began the Youth Poetry Awards in 1969 during her tenure as Illinois Poet Laureate, and continued to administer the awards until her passing in 2000. The original youth poetry awards were born out of Ms. Brooks’ belief that a poet laureate, “should do more than wear a crown—[she] should be of service to the young.”

COMFORTING COLOR

• Vintage Homestead: Reviving design elements from the past with mixed patterns, classic shapes and vintage decor adds up to comfortable and comforting design. With this trend, prints and patterns encompass a range of styles, reinforcing how interiors connect to fash ion. Mixing classic elegance with sleek vintage shapes is refining the concept of polished comfort. To achieve the look, curate pieces in heritage shapes and patterns, along with retro accents. Be sure to incorporate vintage lighting and glass, as well. A versatile color choice like Darkroom, the 2023 Color of the Year from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Wil liams, is an alluring shade that is classic enough for heritage interiors but also modernly retro for a throw back-inspired aesthetic. It’s a neutral perfect for creating an eclectic yet modern look inside and out. Indoors, use it on the walls to offset more earthy brown and taupe tones in your furnishings and textiles. Get inspired to combine the past with the present for a comforting design that’s all your own at hgtvhomeby sherwinwilliams.com. Crafting a Conservatory Today’s homeowners are also increasingly inter ested in biophilic design and bringing the outdoors in, which prompts a conservatory aesthetic in home design. To achieve the look, design your space to make maxi mum use of natural light in creative ways. Incorporate large potted trees and statement plants that blur the lines between indoors and outdoors.

The latest styles reflect reviving and comforting colors influenced by heritage and romance, lending to a look that is familiar in an individualistic way. With more people living their everyday, working lives at home, many homeowners are discovering the contentment that comes with slowing down. Often that means looking to the past to find comfort for moving forward.Nostalgia serves as an emotional tool that delivers deep-rooted serenity and powerful healing properties. Looking to the past is often beneficial during times of uncertainty and can be an opportunity to bring styles and practices back to the present to create an appreciation of the past.Whether living through the romance of rural life styles, the comfort of home or the nostalgia from far-off times, some of today’s most beloved design aesthetics celebrate the past, present and future while bringing balance, hope and comfort for you and your family to embrace.

Timeless Color Using color to evoke feelings and emotions is hardly new but combining a carefully curated color palette with other design elements can allow you to create a look that pays homage to the past while breathing new life into your living Reimaginingspace. classic, familiar tones allows you to achieve a design motif that is equal parts reminiscent and refreshing. “The Vintage Homestead Color Collection offers an effortless look that reveals the importance of being hope ful to find stability and balance,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Our 2023 Color Collection of the Year revives elements from the past that are perfectly paired with vintage, com fortable and classic colors.” Blending Past and Present Striking a balance between old and new can take many forms, as these styles show: • Heritage Revival: An interest in reviving the past is evident in design trends like a remerging appreciation of antiques and vintage elements, such oversized furniture and traditional shapes. To capture this style, your design should focus on contrasting old and new for a mix-andmatch look. Ultimately, the aesthetic is a look that feels simultaneously individualistic and curated. A cohesive color scheme can allow the various elements to stand on their own while working in harmony for an intentional design. For example, the HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams 2023 Color Collection of the Year includes a combination of familiar tones that have been thoughtfully curated by design experts who borrow color and design concepts from the past for a hopeful future and a sense of belonging. Hues like Poetry Plum and Hot Cocoa evoke warmth and depth, while moderate shades like Restrained Gold and Glamour offer fresh ways to incorporate mid-range neutrals. Meanwhile, soft tones like Natural Linen and Cool Beige offer subtle color for lighter, brighter spaces.

Fill your home with balance and hope (Family Features) In the world of design, what’s old inevitably becomes new again, and a similar pattern is inspiring today’s on-trend color palettes for home decor.

• Mixing and Matching of Eras: A new take on retro design is emerging in which eras are blended and new and old furnishing work side by side. To get this look, you’ll craft a space that marries historical and contempo rary design, celebrating both the old and new. To design for longevity, incorporate pieces that are ambiguous in era and stand the test of time.

PASADENA, Calif., PRNewswire -- A unique testing method invented at the University of Birmingham is set for a global rollout after its commercial rights were licensed to the world’s largest COVID-19 test provider, Innova Medical Group – a California-based global health screen ing and diagnostics innovator and a world leader in the manufacture and distribution of COVID-19 rapid tests. Known as Reverse Transcription-Free EXPAR (RTF-EXPAR) testing, this new technol ogy offers detection in as little as 10 minutes. Reverse Transcription-Free EXPAR (RTF-EXPAR) testing offers detection in as little as 10Detailedminutes.test evaluations reveal the method delivers a fast, accurate, highly sensitive and simple test for COVID-19 detection, meaning the test could be deployed en masse at entertainment venues, airport arrival terminals, and in remote settings where clinical testing laboratories are not available. The method is just as sensitive as both PCR and LAMP tests - currently used in hospital settings - and is also faster and more sensitive than lateral flow tests, enabling detection at low vi ral levels. Crucially, it can be used with testing techniques which bypass the need for specialized laboratory equipment, which would reduce delays in waiting for test results, which currently requires samples to be sent to specialist laboratories. The assay was invented and tested at the University of Bir mingham, which found its sensitivity to be equivalent to quan titative PCR testing. This new RTF-EXPAR testing platform is also being adapted for the detection of other viruses, meaning the tests can be quickly adapted to cover both new variants and new viruses. The technology’s new license holder, Innova Medical Group, is the world’s largest provider of lateral flow tests. The company is aiming to accelerate RTF-EXPAR’s global rollout for widespread use by 2023. The approach behind RTF uses reagents that can be adapted for the detection of other viruses, meaning the tests can be quick ly adapted to cover both new variants and other viruses, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes cervical cancer

Professor James Tucker from the University of Birming ham added, “EXPAR amplifies DNA at a single temperature, thus avoiding lengthy heating and cooling steps found in PCR; however, while LAMP also uses a single temperature for amplification, EXPAR is a simpler and a more direct process in which much smaller strands are amplified making it an even faster DNA amplification technique than not only PCR but also LAMP.”For more information on Innova Medical Group, please visit: https://innovamedgroup.com/

Since the COVID-19 pandemic’s outbreak, Innova Medical Group has delivered more than 1.5 billion lateral flow tests to customers world wide. With this new licensing agreement under scoring its nimble approach and commitment to innovate, the company aims to provide effective, high-quality diagnostic products at reasonable prices to more people around the world. “The RTF test rapidly amplifies small quantities of viral genetic material, producing a detectable signal within 10 minutes, which is much faster than PCR or LAMP testing and even quicker than lateral flow tests,” said Professor Tim Dafforn from the University of Birmingham. “The reverse transcription and amplification steps slow down existing COVID-19 assays like LAMP and PCR, which are based on nucleic acid detection, thus an ideal test would be both sufficiently sensitive and speedy; the new RTF test achieves that goal in two ways - a new RNA-toDNA conversion step we designed avoids reverse transcription and the amplification step to generate the read-out signal uses EXPAR, an alternative DNA amplification process.”
