High Concept Labs Announces Fall And Winter 2018 Artist Lineup High Concept Labs (HCL), a Chicago-based arts service organization, recently announced the Fall and Winter 2018-2019 lineup of its flagship Sponsored Artist Program (SAP) and recently launched Winter Intensives. Ten artists and collaboratives have been selected to develop, rehearse, and collaborate on new work through the two cost-free programs, and present new work to audiences in Chicago this season.

“Our mission at HCL is to support working artists, regardless of training or institutional affiliation, to experiment, collaborate, play, and catalyze the creative process,” said Billie Howard, Artistic Director for HCL. “It’s always a joy to welcome new artists to our programs at HCL, because we’re not only broadening our community of artists across disciplines, we’re deepening our connection to communities in Chicago, as well.”

Launched in 2009 and taking place twice

yearly, the SAP provides working artists complimentary access to a 1,700-square-foot rehearsal and performance space at Mana Contemporary, a rapidly expanding art center based in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

HCL also provides administrative, marketing, production, documentation, and development support for SAP artists, enabling them to incubate, workshop, perform, and exhibit their projects.

The intensive programs, launched in early 2018 and offered twice yearly, provide one- and two-week studio residencies for artists to develop durational, long-term performances, installations, exhibitions, and other projects in HCL’s studio at Mana Contemporary.

Police kill about 3 men per day in the US, according to new study

BY FRANK EDWARDS AND MICHAEL H. ESPOSITO Police in the U.S. kill on average more than 1,000 men per year, or about three men per day. According to our estimates, police are responsible for about 8 percent of all adult male homicide deaths in the U.S. each year.

These estimates come from our study, published on July 19.

We relied on novel unofficial data collected through Fatal Encounters, a systematic review of media and public records searches by researchers and journalists. Our team of sociologists with expertise on race and health, which includes Hedwig Lee at Washington University in St. Louis, used these new data to estimate Americans’ underlying risk.

Our analysis shows that risk of police-involved death is two times higher than indicated by official data sources.

Despite in-depth news coverage, you might not find these names in official databases of police-involved deaths collected by the Bureau of Justice Statistics or the National Vital Statistics System. Police agencies are not required to submit information about killings to the federal government, and coroners often do not accurately classify deaths caused by police. Because police departments can choose whether

to report these data, they often fail to do so. These gaps leave federal data on police killings – and thus the public’s understanding of these events – relatively thin.

Journalists, academics and activists have started independent data collection efforts to meet the shortcomings of federal data on police-involved deaths. Projects like Fatal Encounters, which leverages public records and media coverage in an attempt to document every person killed in an interaction with police, have made it possible to speak more precisely about the nature of police-involved deaths in the U.S. These data allow researchers, for

the first time, to reliably measure how often individuals die in interactions with the police and quantify racial and regional differences.

We used Fatal Encounters’ records of police killings documented between 2012 and 2018 to provide a new set of estimates for all U.S. counties by race. Fatal Encounters documented 9,795 police-involved deaths during this period. Men comprised 88 percent of the deaths.

After excluding cases in which police use of force was not the direct cause of death – generally suicides and vehicular collisions – we identified 6,295 adult male victims of police homicide killed over this six-year period, or about 1,000 per year.

By contrast, the National Vital Statistics System and the Arrest Related Deaths program record about 500 deaths per year, less than half of our count.

POLICE KILLINGS ARE COMMON Individuals in large, central metropolitan areas are generally at the highest risk of being killed by police, at about one death per year per 100,000 men.

However, about two-thirds of all police-involved killings happen in suburbs, smaller cities and rural counties. In rural areas, police are responsible for more than 10 percent of all homicides with adult male victims.

Our analysis shows that about 0.7 white men per 100,000 are killed by police annually. Latino and black men are killed at higher rates, at about one death per 100,000 men and 2.2 deaths per 100,000 men per year, respectively. This means that black men are, on average, three times more likely to be killed by police than are white men. Latino men’s risk of being killed by police is about 40 percent higher than the risk faced by white men.

The inequalities we found in the likelihood of being killed by police are similar to previously published estimates using official data, though we estimate the rates of police homicide are about twice as high as prior estimates.

Racial differences in risk vary across U.S. states. Black men face the highest risk of being killed by police in Oklahoma, while Latino Continued on page 4

In Chicago’s Southland region Chamber 57, a non-profit organization, has taken the initiative to promote and support the growth and development of local businesses in Matteson, Olympia Fields, Park Forest, University Park, and Richton Park. The organization works to keep the business community informed, engaged, and inspired through economic development, job training, and business development.

Chamber 57 provides programming for business development, training, and marketing as well as a mix of business seminars, workshops, and programs that are designed to attract new clients, maintain existing clients, recruit and retain new employees, and reduce operational expenses.

“We just did five state of the businesses where we worked with each Village to have them highlight what their economic agenda was, what the agenda was for the actual community, and then what the business owners experience was in the community. Then we talked with the residents about what their experience was like. We are in the process of creating white papers where we can highlight all of the economic development opportunities in these communities and all

the relationships and connections and the best practices,” said Percy Scott, executive director of Chamber 57.

Through the work that Chamber 57 is doing, they are hoping to show these communities and their businesses that success, or failure, does not depend solely on the Village president or the Village administration.

"That was the major thing that we wanted to get businesses in our community to realize,” said Scott. “It’s a community effort and that’s the message we’ve been putting out. If you don’t shop in your own backyard then how can you expect businesses to survive? At the same time, we have to have a strategy because in today’s climate, Amazon is putting a lot of people out of business.”

Scott said he looks at Matteson as “the staple of the south suburbs” “I grew up in Robbins and I used to look at the Village of Matteson as like the shining star on top of the hill. I would come to Lincoln Mall and just from the people and the atmosphere it was my childhood utopia,” said Scott.

After seeing the decline and eventually the demolition of Lincoln Mall along with the closure of several big box stores like Sam’s Club, Target, and Toys R Us, Scott decided to get involved in the Matteson Business Association. It

was here that he realized outside companies were looking at the region as a whole and not the individual communities so Chamber 57 was created to showcase the purchasing power of these five communities.

“That was the purpose of us creating the Chamber 57 because we realized we needed to speak from a regional voice and not just a community voice and we needed someone to highlight these communities that may be predominately African American but the household income is still rival if not greater than it’s surrounding partner communities,” said Scott.

TOMATILLO, PINEAPPLE AND BACON PORK TACOS Recipe courtesy of Haylie Duff Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 6 1 Smithfield Applewood Smoked Bacon Marinated Fresh Pork Loin Filet 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 fresh pineapple, peeled and cut into 1-inch thick slices 1 teaspoon taco seasoning blend 12 white corn tortillas 1-2 radishes, chopped 1 jalapeno, seeds removed and thinly sliced

1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped 1 cup (4 ounces) crumbled queso fresco 1 jar (16 ounces) tomatillo salsa (salsa verde) Cut pork loin filet into 1-inch cubes. Bacon will fall off, but make sure to keep it.

In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Saute half the pork cubes and bacon bits 7-8 minutes until browned. Repeat with remaining oil, pork cubes and bacon.

Heat grill to medium at about 400 F. Sprinkle pineapple slices with taco seasoning; grill until char marks appear, turning once. Cut into 1-inch pieces.

Place tortillas on grill until warm. Top tortillas with pork loin filet cubes, pineapple, radishes, jalapeno, cilantro and queso fresco. Serve with tomatillo salsa.

A PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM Studies show that incarceration harms individual and community health and is a key driver of inequality in the U.S. Aggressive stopand-frisk style policing is linked to increased anxiety and post-traumat-

Our research adds to the increasing scholarly consensus that the U.S. criminal justice system is a key social determinant of health. Our study indicates that contact between civilians and law enforcement exposes individuals to a nontrivial risk of premature death.

Conversations about the incredibly high homicide rate in the U.S. must acknowledge that police are responsible for about one in 12 of those deaths. Reducing overall homicide risk, particularly among

men of color, appears to require reform that explicitly targets interactions between police and civilians.

campaign. Despite widespread interest in and support for a monument, by early 2018 we had raised less than a third of the money required.

I decided to approach other organizations that were in alignment with the work my great-grandmother did about partnering with us. I also awakened my sleepy Twitter account and began to make appeals for support from the public.

My tweets caught the attention of several people with large followings, including organizer Mariame Kaba and award-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. They retweeted my messages raising awareness about this project, and added #IdaPledge to urge people to get involved in making history. In addition, Kaba hosted a New York-based fundraiser that included Hannah-Jones as a panelist, and I made appeals to people at various events across the country.

Donors from all over the nation and some from Canada and England supported the project, proving the international interest in my ancestor. A deluge of donations from over 1,100 people totaling more than US$40,000 coincided with her 156th birthday on July 16. Within six months, Kaba, Hannah-Jones and I had raised close to $200,000 – mostly through online donations that ranged between $10 and $100.

STREET RENAMING INITIATED

BY LOCAL GROUPS At the same time, dozens of local organizations, led by the League of Women Voters of Chicago, pushed to have a major Chicago downtown street renamed after Ida B. Wells.

There is already a Wells Street, but it’s named for a soldier who was stationed in the area before it became a city.

Two local officials, Aldermen Sophia King and Brendan Reilly, led the initiative as grassroots organizations worked to increase public support.

The aldermen originally proposed renaming Balbo Drive, which honors a controversial Italian aviator and fascist leader. Their idea stirred opposition that diverted attention from

the goal of honoring Ida B. Wells.

King and Reilly agreed that the nearby bigger and busier Congress Parkway, which feeds into interstate highways, was a more fitting honor for the longtime Chicago resident who fought for justice and equality. And on July 25, 2018, the Chicago City Council voted to rename the major thoroughfare Ida B. Wells Drive, the first downtown street in the city’s history to be named after a woman or person of color.

During her lifetime, Ida B. Wells got most of her work done with grassroots support from the African-American community. In keeping with her legacy, almost every public honor that Chicago has bestowed on her grew out of the interest, tenacity and work of ordinary citizens who pushed for her recognition.

Michelle Duster is an author, speaker and lecturer of business writing at Columbia College Chicago. She has written, published and contributed to a total of nine books, two of which include the writings of her great-grandmother, Ida B. Wells. She works tirelessly on projects to promote the contributions that African Americans and women have made to the United States.

Black Fire Brigade Sends 30 Black Young Adults to EMT School Thanks to the generosity of donors who support its unique mission, the Black Fire Brigade has tripled the number of black youths it is funding to attend Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) school starting this month.

At the Black Fire Brigade’s grand opening in June, Lieutenant Quention Curtis, the organization’s president and founder, presented a check to send 10 young adults to EMT school. After his

subsequent television and radio segments, the brigade’s phone and inbox were flooded with inquiries from young black adults interested in EMT training – and with donors wanting to help. As a result, the Black Fire Brigade is now providing $30,000 for tuition, books, and uniforms so that 30 students can train for certification.

“Our kids can’t be what they don’t see,” Lt. Curtis says.

“We’re proud to stand strong

on our mission of exposing as many black men and women as possible to public safety careers, and on our promise to remove financial barriers and help them attain highly sought positions in these fields.”

Completion of the EMT certification program is required to obtain an Illinois EMT license, which is transferrable nationwide.

South Suburban College Fall Registration Still in Progress Open Registration for the Fall 2018 Semester at South Suburban College (SSC) is in progress. The Admissions/Registration areas are open Mondays through Thursdays 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and Fridays 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Registration Services will also be open Saturday, August 18 from 9:00

a.m. to 1:00 p.m., including Admissions, Registration, Records, Student Life, Business and Accounting, Financial Aid, AAC, Counseling and Testing.

Apply online at www.ssc.edu to begin the enrollment process. New students will receive an SSC email account and

a “My SSC” Username & Password via email which will allow access to the online schedule and class registration. The “My SSC” portal also allows students 24-hour access during college closed periods.

Fall classes begin Monday, August 20 at the college’s Main Campus and Oak Forest

Local Bank Awards Scholarships To South Suburban Students

For over 50 years, Marquette Bank has been awarding college scholarships through their Marquette Bank Education Foundation.

This year, 57 graduating seniors received scholarships of $2,500 each including students from Blue Island, Alsip, Posen, Crestwood, and Evergreen Park.

Marquette Bank hopes that by investing in young people from the communities they serve, they will be able to make an impact on their own success as well as their surrounding neighborhoods.

Marquette Bank is one of the largest locally-owned neighborhood banks in the Chicagoland area with 21 banking centers, 2 lending services offices, and a corporate administrative center.

“We believe in making sure that our neighborhoods prosper because if our neighborhoods prosper, so do we. By giving back and allowing

the community to be part of our business, we feel that it’s that much better of an opportunity for us to be here as a financial institution.

We don’t want to just be another bank, we like to offer services that other institutions don’t do, like the scholarship,” said Manuel Jimenez, First Vice President and Community Resource Act (CRA) Officer for Marquette Bank.

Scholarship recipient Lemuel Cartman, from Blue Island, recently graduated from Eisenhower High School and will be using his Marquette Bank Scholarship to attend Valparaiso University in the fall.

Overall, $140,000 was invested in the local community through scholarships this year and since it’s inception in 1967, the scholarship fund has awarded more than $3.3 million to seniors from the greater Chicagoland area.

It is important to do that because as long as our communities thrive then we will continue to thrive so it’s just really important to us to help these students because a lot of them wouldn’t have the opportunity to go to college if it wasn’t for a scholarship. The banks 21 locations are surrounded by a total of 57 nearby schools and that is where the bank looks to when awarding scholarships to make sure that their community investment directly impacts the people around their various branch locations. Every year, they examine their list of schools to make sure that they are not leaving anyone out, according to Cox. Coming up in September, Marquette Bank will hosts a golf outing as a fundraiser for the Marquette

Bank Education Foundation in the hopes of expanding the scholarship program even further.

“This year we are starting what we hope will be our first, and with more to come fundraisers for Marquette Bank Education Foundation.
