The upcoming census in 2020 could result in Illinois losing one congressional seat due to all residents, such as blacks, not being counted.

That is what U.S. Census Bureau officials said at an August 5 community meeting in Country Club Hills, which was hosted by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, D-2nd, whose district includes many south suburbs. A census office for the south suburbs will open next year in Matteson, according to Kelly.

One problem with getting people especially blacks and low-income earners to participate is a lack of Internet access, according to Cory Stevenson, a partnership specialist in the Chicago regional office for the U.S. Census Bureau.

“Not everyone, especially in rural areas, have Internet access and sometimes that makes it difficult for those individuals to participate,” he said. “Seniors, minorities and low-income individuals are among the core groups the census has identified as hard to reach. We know many seniors do not feel comfortable giving their personal information over the phone, and therefore may choose not to participate at all.”

Mostly seniors like Patricia Albright attended the meeting where they asked questions about having their personal information safeguarded.

Albright, a Markham resident, said she does not want to participate in the census.

“I don’t trust the government with my personal information. I know it is important that everyone be counted but I’m not sure if I want to put my business out there,” she said. “I am a retiree with a side business and I don’t need the IRS sniffing around my pockets.”

Other groups Stevenson said are hard to contact for the census include veterans, the homeless, children, college students, renters, and Millennials. According to census data, Illi-

nois has a population of 12.5 million, Chicago 2.7 million and Cook County 5.2 million.

Jeanine Beasley, also a partnership specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, added that the census is partnering with local organizations to help with outreach efforts to contact those groups hard to reach.

“On March 27, 30 and 31, we will hit the streets with our community partners to reach those core groups like the homeless,” said Beasley. “We will go to homeless shelters, prisons, colleges, senior homes, and any place where there’s a large group of people sharing the same address to make sure they are counted.”

Super-majority of parents support more funding in public schools, higher pay for educators, according to national PDK poll The 51st annual PDK Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools finds that Americans overwhelmingly support increasing investments in the nation’s public schools: six in 10 parents say their schools are underfunded, and 74 percent say they support a strike by teachers for higher pay. The poll also finds that educators are fed up as 60% of teachers say they’re unfairly paid and 75% of teachers say their community’s schools are underfunded.

“Over the last several years, hundreds of thousands of NEA

members and parents have stood together for the public schools our students deserve, creating the nationwide #RedForEd movement that has won increased investments in students in states across the nation,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. “And yet, while the #RedForEd movement has helped more students and educators get the support they need, today’s PDK Poll should remind everyone that there is still so much more work to be done to correct the years of inadequate funding of our public schools.”

She added residents could go online to census.gov for more information about the census or to receive help filling out a census form.

As of now though the census does not have a plan in place on how it plans to reach other core groups like blacks, low-income earners, renters, and Millennials.

“We are still working on ways to reach those groups but every effort will be made to contact everyone,” added Beasley.

The consequences if everyone is not counted could be devastating for Illinois, contends Kelly.

“It is important that everyone is counted in the census. If not, Illinois stands to lose as much as

$1 billion a year for the next 10 years in federal funding,” said Kelly. “And if we lose this funding, Illinois residents would see drastic cuts to Medicaid, federal student loans, food stamps, and highway funding.”

This is why Gov. J. B. Pritzker allocated $29 million toward outreach efforts for the census, and for the first time why Cook County kicked in $2 million for the census, said Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore, D-4th.

“We are a little concerned about outreach efforts by the census so we’re making sure all Illinois residents are counted by funding our own outreach efforts,” explained Moore. “Not only would Illinois and Cook County lose on average $1,400 for every person not counted but we could also lose as many as two congressional seats in Washington.”

Robbins Mayor Tyrone Ward, who attended the meeting, said he too is concerned about all blacks and low-income earners, who make up the majority of Robbins’ 5,337 residents, not being counted in the census.

“I am totally concerned about everyone not being counted in the census. No one from the census office has yet to come to Robbins,” said Ward. “We know where the homeless live and can be a big help to the census. That’s why we [Village of Robbins] have taken the initiative to do outreach on our own.”

Robbins is not in Kelly’s congressional district but the 1st District, which is represented

by Democrat U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush.

The federal census, which occurs nationally every 10 years, will be conducted next year from January to April, and all residents including undocumented immigrants can participate by phone, online or mail, added Kelly.

“The [Trump] administration is actively working, unfortunately, to scare participation in immigrant communities,” contends Kelly.

“But the U.S. Constitution allows for all residents regardless if they are a U.S. citizen to be included in the census.”

Joint Letter Signed by 17 Insurance Commissioners Sent to HHS Secretary Alex Azar Illinois Department of Insurance Director Robert Muriel recently joined 17 Commissioners representing tens of millions of American insurance consumers in a letter sent to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, urging him to protect rules that address unfair treatment of transgender consumers. The letter states that changes proposed by the Trump Administration will undermine civil rights protections for millions of consumers, create an uneven playing field for health

insurers and negatively affect state insurance markets.

The proposed changes affect Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits sex discrimination in health insurance and clarifies protections for transgender Americans from being denied lifesaving, medically necessary care. On May 24, 2019 the Trump Administration proposed regulations that seek to roll back protections that ensure equal protection from discrimination by insurers and providers.

Subaru Fosters Education Through Annual “Subaru Loves Learning” Initiative Subaru of America, Inc. recently announced that for the fifth consecutive year, the automaker will partner with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to broaden students’ worlds with the study of science, engineering and innovation through the Subaru Loves Learning initiative.

Developed in conjunction with the Subaru Love Promisevision, this annual initiative brings together Subaru retailers across the country, as well as AAAS’s 120,000 members and 262 affiliated societies to increase access to beloved science books.

South Suburban Township Prepares To Host Annual Basketball Tournament

On Aug. 24, Thornton Township will once again host their 18th annual Taste of Thornton Township Basketball Tournament. The event brings together teenagers, government employees, and local first responders to form basketball teams and represent their town or village in the tournament. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at South Suburban College in South Holland.

“This event has something for everyone of all ages,” said Tui M. Muse, chairman of the 18th annual Taste of Thornton Township Basketball Tournament. “We continue to make the Taste one of the largest and best events in the southland. I think people will be excited about all the new features we have brought in this year.”

This year’s event is expected to bring together around 1,000 people to enjoy food, live music, entertain-

ment, games, crafts, a car show, and the basketball tournament.

In order to make this event a true taste of Thornton Township, a wide variety of food will be offered for attendees including barbecued ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, catfish, jerk chicken, turkey legs, Italian sausage and beef, nachos, cheesecake, snow cones, Italian ice, and specialty teas, according to information provided

by Thornton Township.

“The Taste is one of our largest events and brings people throughout Thornton Township in one place to enjoy great live music, food, and family entertainment,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor.

The headliner this year will be Heatwave, an international funk and disco-band. Opening acts include the Chicago Boyz Acrobats, Visions of Santana, a Tina Turner impersonator, Youth Mexican Dance Group, and Past Life.

The basketball tournament will start at 5 p.m. on Aug. 24 and will host five-on-five basketball games in the gym at South Suburban College until a new winner is named. Last year, the Lansing police department and teens won the tournament and the year before that, the Markham Police department won the tournament.

Stop blaming video games for mass killings

In the wake of the El Paso shooting on Aug. 3 that left 22 dead and dozens injured, a familiar trope has reemerged: Often, when a young man is the shooter, people try to blame the tragedy on violent video games and other forms of media.

This time around, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick placed some of the blame on a video game industry that “teaches young people to kill.”

Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California went on to condemn video games that “dehumanize individuals” as a “problem for future generations.” And President Trump pointed to society’s “glorification of violence,” including “gruesome and grisly video games.”

These are the same connections a Florida lawmaker made after the Parkland shooting in February 2018, suggesting that the gunman in that case “was prepared to pick off students like it’s a video game.”

But, as a researcher who has studied violent video games for almost 15 years, I can state that there is no evidence to support these claims that violent media and real-world violence are connected.

As far back as 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that research did not find a clear connection between violent video games and aggressive behavior. Criminologists who study mass shootings specifically refer to those sorts of connections as a

“myth.” And in 2017, the Media Psychology and Technology division of the American Psychological Association released a statement I helped craft, suggesting reporters and policymakers cease linking mass shootings to violent media, given the lack of evidence for a link.

A history of a moral panic So why are so many policymakers inclined to blame violent video games for violence? There are two main reasons.

The first is the psychological research community’s efforts to market itself as strictly scientific.

This led to a replication crisis instead, with researchers often unable to repeat the results of their studies.

Now, psychology researchers are reassessing their analyses of a wide range of issues – not just violent video games, but implicit racism, power poses and more.

The other part of the answer lies

in the troubled history of violent video game research specifically.

Beginning in the early 2000s, some scholars, anti-media advocates and professional groups like the APA began working to connect a methodologically messy and often contradictory set of results to public health concerns about violence. This echoed historical patterns of moral panic, such as 1950s concerns about comic books and Tipper Gore’s efforts to blame pop and rock music in the 1980s for violence, sex and Satanism.

Particularly in the early 2000s, dubious evidence regarding violent video games was uncritically promoted. But over the years, confidence among scholars that violent video games influence aggression or violence has crumbled.

Reviewing all the scholarly literature My own research has examined the degree to which violent video games can – or can’t – predict youth aggression and violence. In a 2015 meta-analysis, I examined 101 studies on the subject and found that violent video games had little impact on kids’ aggression, mood, helping behavior or grades.

Two years later, I found evidence that scholarly journals’ editorial biases had distorted the scientific record on violent video games. Experimental studies that found effects were more likely to be published than studies that had found none.

This was consistent with others’

findings. As the Supreme Court noted, any impacts due to video games are nearly impossible to distinguish from the effects of other media, like cartoons and movies.

Any claims that there is consistent evidence that violent video games encourage aggression are simply false.

Spikes in violent video games’ popularity are well-known to correlate with substantial declines in youth violence – not increases.

These correlations are very strong, stronger than most seen in behavioral research. More recent research suggests that the releases of highly popular violent video games are associated with immediate declines in violent crime, hinting that the releases may cause the drop-off.

The role of professional groups With so little evidence, why are lawmakers still trying to blame violent video games for mass shootings by young men? Can groups like the National Rifle Association seriously blame imaginary guns for gun violence?

A key element of that problem is the willingness of professional guild organizations such as the APA to promote false beliefs about violent video games. (I’m a fellow of the APA.) These groups mainly exist to promote a profession among news media, the public and policymakers, influencing licensing and insurance laws. They also make it easier to get grants and newspaper head-

lines. Psychologists and psychology researchers like myself pay them yearly dues to increase the public profile of psychology. But there is a risk the general public may mistake promotional positions for objective science.

In 2005 the APA released its first policy statement linking violent video games to aggression. However, my recent analysis of internal APA documents with criminologist Allen Copenhaver found that the APA ignored inconsistencies and methodological problems in the research data.

The APA updated its statement in 2015, but that sparked controversy immediately: More than 230 scholars wrote to the group asking it to stop releasing policy statements altogether. I and others objected to perceived conflicts of interest and lack of transparency tainting the process.

It’s bad enough that these statements misrepresent the actual scholarly research and misinform the public. But it’s worse when those falsehoods give advocacy groups like the NRA cover to shift blame for violence onto non-issues like video games. The resulting misunderstanding hinders efforts to address mental illness and other issues, such as the need for gun control, that are actually related to gun violence.

South Suburban Post Office To Be Renamed After Tuskegee Airman Captain

The United States Senate recently approved legislation, introduced by Congresswoman Robin Kelly, which will rename the Olympia Fields Post Office, 3033 203rd St., in honor of Captain Robert L. Martin who led the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. The name change was unanimously approved by the Senate and now is awaiting the President’s signature.

Back in February, Congresswoman Kelly introduced legislation designed to rename the Olympia Fields post office.

At the end of April, H.R.1449 passed in the U.S. House and most recently passed the Senate with a unanimous vote

in favor of the name change, according to information provided by the United States Congress’ website.

Before 1940, African Americans were not allowed to fly for the U.S. military.

After immense pressure from civil rights organizations, an all African American military flight team was assembled in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1941 which became known as the Tuskegee Airmen, according to Tuskegee Airman, Inc. Captain Martin was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and served as a combat pilot in the 100th Fighter Squadron of the 332nd Fighter Group. Captain Martin was shot down over German-occupied territory

and evaded capture for five weeks as he made his way to safety, according to information provided by Congresswoman Kelly.

“Through his life and career, Captain Robert L. Martin taught us to pursue excellence and he was dedicated to service. Honoring Captain Martin’s life and accomplishments by naming the post office in Olympia Fields the ‘Captain Robert L. Martin Post Office,’ is a fitting tribute to this American hero,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

In 1945, Captain Martin retired from the U.S. Army after receiving several medals for his bravery and service during World War II including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the

Air Medal with Six Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.

In 2007, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush at a ceremony honoring the Tuskegee Airmen, according to information provided

by Congresswoman Kelly.

Eventually, Martin made his way to Chicago where he worked for the City of Chicago as an electrical engineer.

He married Odette Ewell and the couple had four children throughout their 68-year marriage.

In 2008, he moved to Olympia Fields and lived there until he passed away just about a year ago, according to information provided by Congresswoman Kelly.
