After a one-year interruption last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Illinois State Fair in Springfield is set to reopen Thursday, Aug. 12, with some new attractions and new safety requirements.

Among the new requirements, Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II said during a media briefing Friday, will be a mask mandate at all indoor venues.

“It’s important for fairgoers to know that we will be following (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines,” Costello said.

“So what that means is masks will be required indoors. This includes the following buildings: the Coliseum, Expo Building, the Illinois Building, the Dairy Building, the Livestock Center, Artesian Building, Emerson Building, and the Orr Building. Again, masks will be required when indoors.”

For those who arrive without masks but who plan to attend indoor events, free masks will be available at all entry gates, he said.

also are strongly encouraging fairgoers to wear masks in large gatherings, including the Twilight Parade, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Other safety measures being taken include extra hand washing stations throughout the fairgrounds, cleaning of high-touch areas, and foggers on carnival rides and grandstand seating. There will also be free vaccinations available at six locations on the fairgrounds.

State officials were forced to cancel the fair last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time the fair had been called off since World War II. But with vaccines now widely available, and with nearly 60 percent of the state’s population over age 12 now fully vaccinated as of Friday, according to IDPH, officials said they feel comfortable the fair can go off safely this year.

“I think people are just done,” Illinois State Fair manager Kevin Gordon said. “I mean, they’re tired of sitting around for a year and they’re wanting to get out. Again, we emphasize and we encourage that everyone get vaccinated to come out. But we’ll make certain that everyone out here, when they do show up, will have a safe and have a fun time.”

The first major event of the fair actually

happens Wednesday with the unveiling of this year’s butter cow. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the butter cow, a life-size display sculpted out of real butter that is typically fashioned around a timely theme. Masks will be required in the Dairy Building where the cow is housed.

Thursday. Gov. JB Pritzker will join Costello and other state and local dignitaries for a ribbon cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. That will be followed by the Twilight parade at 5 p.m.

Among the new attractions this year is a tribute to Route 66, which stretched nearly 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, winding its way through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and southern California. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the establishment of that highway, one of the original roadways of the U.S. highway system.

The “Route 66 Experience” at the fairgrounds will allow visitors to walk through exhibits commemorating the Illinois portion of the highway from Chicago to the Chain of Rocks Bridge and learn about communities and attractions along the route.

The fair will also feature 13 stages with free

entertainment ranging from live music to pig races, a water circus in which acrobats perform 40 feet above the top of an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and an assortment of sword swallowers, fire breathers and escape artists.

Grandstand shows this year include country music performers Toby Keith, Kane Brown and Sammy Hagar; comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias; a Neil Diamond tribute band called the Traveling Salvation Show; a night of 90s music with Vanilla Ice and other artists; George Thorogood and others.

Masks will be required for all grandstand concerts, and those in the grandstand track standing room only section will be required to provide a print or digital copy of vaccination records or a negative COVID-19 test result within three days prior to the event.

100 Local Students Participate in STEM Program to Improve Diversity in STEM ComEd engineers and Dr. Kate Biberdorf lead students in building mini-Mars rovers and STEM challenges For the second year, ComEd is sparking curiosity among Chicagoland high school students by bringing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education to their homes through ComEd STEM Home Labs. The program was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to safely continue to bring STEM programming and mentorship to Black and Hispanic students, as women and people of color continue to be dramatically underrepresented in STEM fields.

ComEd engineers and Dr. Kate Biberdorf, also known as “Kate the Chemist,” led nearly 100 students in three virtual “build days” over the last week, as they participated in a simulated mission to Mars by solving STEM-related challenges that included building their own Mars Rover. ComEd STEM Home Labs culminates today with an in-person event in which students use their rovers to navigate various “Marscapes,” with each teen using their own rover and learned skills to complete tasks.

“Strengthening our commitment to STEM education among diverse youth is critical to helping close the gap that exists for women and minorities in STEM careers,” said Michelle Blaise, senior vice president of technical services at ComEd. “For more than seven years, ComEd has provided yearround programming that inspires students to build confidence, knowledge and career paths in STEM to open doors of opportunity and help pave the way for future diverse STEM leaders. ComEd STEM Home Labs is just one avenue to achieve that.”

Students received ComEd STEM Home Lab kits with materials needed for the three build days. Over the course of the build days, students worked to build mini, wirelessly-controlled rovers, coded for the rovers, and installed cameras to find the lost rovers and explore Mars. Students learned from influential scientists while collaborating with other students interested in pursuing STEM-related careers.

nities. According to Pew Research, Black and Hispanic workers also continue to be underrepresented in the STEM workforce. Black workers make up 11 percent of the U.S. workforce overall but represent 9 percent of STEM workers, while Hispanic workers comprise 16 percent of the U.S. workforce but only 7 percent of all STEM workers.

In 2019, women made up 28 percent of the jobs within the STEM workforce — despite making up 50 percent of the national workforce, according to the National Girls Collaborative Project. The STEM field is even less inclusive of Black and Latina women, who represent only one out of 20 employed scientists.

ComEd STEM Home Labs is one example of ComEd’s year-round programming to engage the next generation of local STEM talent and increase diverse representation in the STEM field. Other ComEd programs include Solar Spotlightevents during Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month, and the ComEd Icebox Derby for Chicagoland girls.

United Way of Metro Chicago announces United Neighborhoods Equity Fund Grant applications for $50k now open for small, Black and brown-led Chicago nonprofits PRNewswire -- United Way of Metro Chicago today opened applications for their new United Neighborhoods Equity Fund (UNEF). UNEF aims to support small, Black and brown-led nonprofits predominantly located on the city’s south and west sides and south suburban region, and connect them to new investment opportunities. Each of the 10 grantees will be awarded $50,000 of unrestricted funds over a two-year cycle to be used according to the needs of each nonprofit.

Research by Echoing Green and The Bridgespan Group shows that leaders of color face challenges connecting to funders, building rapport, and securing and sustaining support for culturally relevant strategies. This has led to significant disparities in investment. Black-led organizations dedicated to improving outcomes for Black men have revenue that is 45% lower than organizations with white leaders.

With UNEF, United Way will assist Black and brown-led organizations in building capacity at the grassroots level to accelerate neighborhood-driven outcomes and mentor them to plan for long-term success.

UNEF is made possible with the generous support of founding sponsor Peoples Gas, which committed $1 million to the initiative, and corporate sponsors Nicor Gas and Target.

DePaul University is providing professional leadership development and training to the grantees.

ICA Funds Oakland-based Athletic Apparel Maker, Courtsmith, with $300K Equity Investment OAKLAND, Calif.

Traditional handicrafts, such as bead embroidery and lacquer thread sculptures, have been passed down from ancient times, while folk customs like Bobing Game and the Wangchuan ceremony evoke the historical memory of ancestors and reshape social connections when celebrating big moments or confronted with emergencies.

At the same time, historical buildings across the city, such as those on Gulangyu Island and Zhongshan Road, represent a variety of local and international architectural styles and enable the city to embody China’s spirit of openness and inclusiveness.

World Heritage Gulangyu Gulangyu Island, known in the local dialect as Kulangsu, is commonly mentioned when people talk about Xiamen.

A quiet and beautiful islet in the southwestern corner of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu has witnessed clashes of culture and integration between

the East and West since Xiamen first opened to foreign trade in 1844.

A total of 931 historical buildings, along with a variety of local and international architectural styles, natural scenery, historic roads, and gardens turned the 1.83-square-kilometer space into a “World Building Expo”.

Many historical relics and natural scenic spots are still well-preserved on the island, making it an exceptional example of flourishing cultural fusion.

Being at the center of Sino-foreign exchange activities since the beginning of the 20th century, Gulangyu is not only a world heritage site, but also an urban community shaped by people who have lived there for generations, said Shahbaz Khan, director of the UNESCO Cluster Office in Beijing.

The local authority started seeking UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status in 2008. On July 8, 2017, Gulangyu became the 52nd Chinese site to make the list.

Heritage protection a top priority There is no doubt that becoming a world heritage site can enhance a region’s reputation and boost the local tourism industry. But for the readily notable Gulangyu, better protection and sustainable development are the primary goals.

launched a comprehensive restoration of Gulangyu Island, including limiting the number of tourists, promoting garbage sorting, restoring buildings, and standardizing business operations.

In 2014, an island-wide museum plan was launched, with a number of dilapidated houses, hospitals, private houses, and other historical sites being restored and fully used to demonstrate the island’s stories.

At the same time, a healthy mechanism for heritage protection and management was established and a series of protection measures were introduced to ensure the sustainable development of the island.

Heritage protection a long journey Xiamen was recognized as a provincial-level historically and culturally eminent city in November 2020.

When preparing for the application, the local government was still working to further improve their cultural and natural heritage protection techniques, said Ke Yuzong, director of the city’s bureau of natural resources and planning.

At present, Xiamen has 1,745 immovable cultural relic sites and more than 32,000 classified movable cultural relics.

The city launched three-dimensional archiving work on historical buildings, with 14 sites having been completed.

In addition, Xiamen has made significant achievements in protecting its intangible cultural heritage items. The city has a total of 89 intangible cultural heritage items at the municipal level and above.

The city also played an active role in obtaining UNESCO intangible cultural heritage status for the Wangchuan ceremony, which is the first item to be jointly applied

by China and a country (Malaysia) along the Maritime Silk Road.

In June 2020, Xiamen carried out a measure on the protection and development of Minnan culture, which is the first regulation directed at local cultural protection in China.

Ke stressed that Xiamen will continue optimizing its efforts to protect its historical and cultural heritage and seeking tailored solutions to better use these resources.

UnityPoint Health plans to require team members to get vaccinated against COVID-19 by Nov. 1, 2021 Health system continues to urge communities to follow suit and help slow the spread of the pandemic before this year’s flu season WEST DES MOINES, Iowa PRNewswire -- UnityPoint Health is announcing today plans to require its more than 33,000 team members to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The three-state health system also continues to urge all eligible individuals to get their COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible.

members can request an exemption for medical or religious reasons, which is consistent with the health system’s practice for other required vaccines. Additionally, while pregnant team members will be strongly encouraged to get vaccinated, a temporary deferral will be available.

UnityPoint Health has made it a priority to educate its team members on the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, sharing clinically validated information with all team members and answering staff questions on the vaccine since December 2020.

While technology kept many in the United States connected to care and loved ones, many low-income older adults were left behind by the sudden need to understand and access technology and internet services.

However, among those who could stand to benefit the most from these services are 22 million older adults (ages 65 and above) in the United States who don’t have broadband access at home. What’s more, older adults (ages 62 and above) with an income below $25,000 are 10 times more likely to be offline at home. Many older adults lack the technological literacy needed to leverage digital resources for health and social support.

New efforts are helping to address these inequities. CITRIS Health, an organization dedicated to advancing the well-being of older adults and family caregivers with enabling technology, recently launched “Lighthouse Following an initial pilot, participants reported both an increase in device usage as well as confidence in using their devices.

When asked about their favorite part of using a Google device, one participant stated, “Being able to connect visually with family and friends.

And visually means a lot.”

Those at the helm of the project say they hope its success will serve as a model for other such programs.

“Older adults have so much to gain from the connections and health care opportunities available with internet access and a basic understanding of technology,” says CITRIS Health director and Lighthouse project lead David Lindeman.

“We’re eager to see this program replicated to improve equity in telehealth.”
