The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC)’s Our American Story Honors General Colin Powell (Black PR Wire) Washington, D.C. -- The National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is proud to present the next page from Our American Story, an online series for Museum supporters. We offer these stories to honor and celebrate the African American experience, share an immensely rich history and culture, and inspire and sustain our community as we move toward the future together.

Gen. Colin Luther Powell, our nation’s first African American Secretary of State, was a revered military hero, four-star general, decorated veteran, and statesman. His accomplishments during his decades of military and civil service — including being a recipient of the Soldier’s Medal, the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, the Congressional Gold Medal, and two Presidential Medals of Freedom, among others — serve as a powerful testament and symbol of the fulfillment of the American promise.

His is the quintessential American story — one characterized by resilience, determination, and a deep love of country. In forging his own journey to success, Powell also shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for others in public service.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell was born in Harlem, New York, in 1937 and raised to value hard work and determination above all else. He grew up in New York City’s public school system and attended the City College of New York, where he majored in geology and explored the possibilities of a military career by joining the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).

After graduating in 1958, Powell was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Over the next decade Powell completed Infantry Officer Basic, Ranger, and Airborne schools. He served as a platoon leader and commanded a company of the 5th Infantry Division before being promoted to captain in 1962. In December 1962, Powell was assigned to Vietnam as an advisor to a South Vietnamese Infantry battalion. There he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.

Returning home in November 1963, Powell completed the Infantry Officer Advanced Course and was promoted to major in 1966. In 1968, Powell returned to Vietnam. He was decorated with the Soldier’s Medal for bravery after he survived a helicopter crash and, while injured, single-handedly rescued three others.

Following his military service in Vietnam, Powell pursued a master’s in business administration from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. During this time, he accepted his first of many political positions, serving as a White House Fellow under President Nixon.

Powell served in both Republican and Democratic presidential

administrations. He joined the Carter administration in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, eventually serving as senior military assistant to the deputy secretary throughout the late 1970s. During the Reagan administration, he served in the Pentagon as a senior military assistant to then-Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger.

In 1986, Powell was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor. Three years later, in 1989, he became a four-star general and was appointed by President George H. W. Bush as the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer and principal military advisor to the President. He was the first African American chairman and the first chairman who earned his commission through the ROTC. Powell remained in this position for the first few months of the Clinton administration before retiring from the Army in 1993.

He was appointed Secretary of State by President George W. Bush in 2001, becoming the first African American to ever hold the position. Powell’s term in office was marked by the September 11 terrorist attacks and the start of the second Gulf War. He remained politically active after his retirement in 2005, notably endorsing Barack Obama for president in 2008.

The story of Colin Powell is marked by youthful initiative and outstanding public service to the military, the American people, and the country at large. He received bipartisan support throughout his public career, and embodied the determination, patriotism, and democratic values that are emblematic of our nation—and in doing so cemented his legacy as an American hero.

Powell, who joined the Museum’s advisory Council in 2010, also served as one of the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s staunchest supporters. Both he and his wife, Alma Powell, are Founding Donors who provided generous personal support to both the Museum’s capital campaign and today’s Living History campaign to secure the Museum’s future. Powell also agreed to serve as one of the honorary chairs of the Living History campaign.

Powell was an invaluable member of our community. His determination, patriotism, and character inspired many—from those he led in the military to those he served in government. Powell created his legacy by “being successful every day” and, in doing so, left an immense impact on our nation’s history that will live on for generations to come.

CPS to Benefit from Lollapalooza Arts Grants CHICAGO – The team behind Chicago’s annual Lollapalooza music festival highlighted the 50 Chicago Public Schools that have been receiving funding so far from the Lollapalooza Arts Education Fund. The money helps CPS meet its goal of providing arts education to every child in every school.

Support is targeted toward schools that will benefit from increased access and additional resources for arts education. Of the roughly 100,000 students in these schools, 92% are students of color and 67% live in low-income households.

CHICAGO’S WNDR MUSEUM CELEBRATES JUNETEENTH WITH NEW ART GALLERY, BLACK LIGHT AT WNDR CHICAGO – WNDR Museum, Chicago’s original immersive art and technology experience, will celebrate Juneteenth with the opening of a new art gallery, Black Light at WNDR. Curated by WNDR Museum managers Randi Townsend and Huey Douglas-Small, the gallery will shine a spotlight on Chicago-based Black artists. Black Light at WNDR will be on view at WNDR Museum throughout the month of June.

Black Light at WNDR will showcase works from local Black artists JUJU, Shaquita Reed, Arrington Porter and Fanni Graham. Featured artworks will span various mediums ranging from paintings and drawings to fiber arts and beyond.

“Living within the digital age, it can be difficult to find Black artists unless you’re specifically looking for them. With this in mind, we curated Black Light at WNDR with the intention to amplify the work of some of our favorite local Black artists,” said Townsend. “Throughout the month of June, we come together to contemplate what Black freedom looks and feels like, so we asked these artists to express how the concept of freedom is channeled and manifested through their work. We are thrilled to showcase these extremely talented artists in our space.”

Thursday, May 26, marked the completion of the three-week Maymester Music Accelerator Program at TSU. This program ended with guest lecturers, super producer Dallas Austin and recording artist Sir The Baptist, they both received honorary doctorates in music from TSU on May 6. The last class was held at the National Museum of African American Music and to their surprise, each student received a gold plaque from the RIAA. The Music Accelerator Program at Tennessee State University is a program in partnership with Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC), Nashville Music Equality, Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Wasserman Music, and YouTube Music.

Over the course of the 3-week program, guest lectures from influential music executives, along with internship placements for students looking to start their career paths across multiple music industry companies, including Wasserman Music, Warner Music Nashville and LVRN. Sheriff’s Office’s Assistant General Counsel for Litigation Appointed Editorin-Chief of the Illinois Bar Journal Cook County Sheriff’s Office attorney Khara Coleman has been named the 2022-2023 Editor-in-Chief of the Illinois Bar Journal, giving her the distinction of being the first Black woman to hold the position, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

Coleman, who joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2018 and serves as Assistant General Counsel for Civil Litigation and Torts, previously held positions as Secretary and Vice Chair of the publication’s board.

“Serving as a member of the Editorial Board for the Illinois Bar Journal has been nothing put a pleasure, and it is one of the highest honors to hold a leadership role on this Board,” Coleman said. “I am fond of saying that the Illinois State Bar Association is more diverse in membership than it generally gets credit for, and the composition of the Editorial Board is proof of that.

I believe this Board serves ISBA members best when it reflects the diversity of the entire population of attorneys who are members of the Illinois Bar.” With 28,000 members, the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) is the largest bar association in Illinois and one of the largest voluntary bar associations in the country. Cover and chill 2-6 hours. Dice lemon. Mix diced lemon and 1/4 teaspoon olive oil. Cover and chill.

Mix diced lemon, tomato, cucumber, pickle, green onion, parsley, vinegar, 1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cover and chill.

Lightly oil grill rack and heat grill to medium. Mix pepper, asparagus, remaining oil and remaining salt.

Grill asparagus 2 minutes, or until tender-crisp. Let cool. Cover and chill.

Set large serving platter on work surface. Place hummus and tomato salad in small bowls.

• Virtual volunteering is here to stay: Volunteerism has not only remained important, it’s on the rise, with 54% of global respondents saying, “I plan to volunteer more than I did before the pandemic.” Of those, the vast majority intend to do so primarily via virtual opportunities.

• Calls for corporate involvement: Individuals see companies as having an obligation to get involved.

Indeed, a majority of respondents said they expect companies to address social challenges. At the same time, respondents are measuring a given company’s sincerity by the way it treats its employees.

“Civic Life Today: The State of Global Civic Engagement,” which was commissioned by Points of Light and designed and executed by INFLUENCE|SG, studied attitudes around civic engagement in the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Brazil.

“We believe that the most powerful force is the individual who has realized their power to make change happen. However, everyone can be more impactful when working together,” says Natalye Paquin, president and CEO of Points of Light, the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to accelerating people-powered change. “This report is intended to reveal ways to act effectively -- making it easier for individuals to find these opportunities and organizations to create them.”

The report also supports Points of Light’s Civic Circle, a framework that helps people understand that there are many ways to do good. The nine activities outlined by the Civic Circle are: listening and learning, using one’s voice, social entrepreneurship,

volunteering, public, national or military service, using one’s purchasing power to express values, working, voting, and donating.
