Henson – launched a public awareness campaign recently to address the mental health impact the education system places on students, particularly Black students ages 12-22.

The six-week campaign, titled “The Unspoken Curriculum,” kicks off during Mental Health Awareness Month with a video of a spoken word poem that highlights how the life lessons students learn about race in school are not always in the lesson plan, but they are lessons students carry with them into adulthood.

Developed in partnership with BLHF’s agency partner Edelman, the campaign rolls out as Black families continue to grapple with the disproportionate impact COVID-19 has had on their lives and livelihoods, grieve the deaths of countless Black people at the hands of the police, and contend with the anxiety of their children returning to in-person learning.

The goal of “The Unspoken Curriculum” is to: * Combat mental distress caused by implicit bias by helping Black youth as well as parents, teachers, and administrators recognize the signs of trauma and distress * Inspire youth to feel confident and empowered to talk about their personal experiences in the classroom, protect their mental health, and seek support when they need it

* Advocate for meaningful change in the classroom by rethinking and reforming the lessons Black students learn in school * Drive measurable action among youth as well as adults in the education system and beyond who play an integral role in shaping the experiences that set the tone for each young person’s future Everyone has a stake in the mental health of Black youth, yet many people do not acknowledge the implicit bias in the education system that severely disadvantages Black students. According to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, Black students make up 16% of enrolled students, but account for 27% of students referred to law enforcement and 31% of student arrests.

Forty-eight percent of Black students also receive one or more suspensions throughout the duration of their academic career, according to the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights data, 2014 and 2016.

Through their personal experiences and interactions with teachers, administrators, other students, and the education system at large, Black students learn how they’re perceived, what’s expected of them, what resources they do and do not have access to, and the nuances of their level of respect and power in society.

“What is taught in the classroom can be very different from what is learned, and that disparity has detrimental effects on the growth

and mindset of Black students,” said Taraji P. Henson, founder of the Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation (BLHF). “With ‘The Unspoken Curriculum’ we aim to create space to talk about the Black student experience, break the stigma that comes with talking about these real issues, and improve access to solutions.

This is an opportunity for all of us to rethink the lessons Black students are learning in our education system.”

To complement the awareness video, “The Unspoken Curriculum” campaign includes: * A landing page with call-to-action resources, creative assets, After School Hangout sign ups, text-to-give messaging and more; * Content from community leaders and influencers sharing their personal experiences with “The Unspoken Curriculum” in school and how those experiences affected their own mental health; * Social media assets and promotion using school iconography like textbooks, posters, and test questions to invite people to look more deeply at “The Unspoken Curriculum”; * A partnership with Snapchat to offer a customized “Unspoken Curriculum” filter to help youth, parents, educators, and others promote mental health discussions; and * After School Hangout sessions, which are digital support rooms for students to “hang out” and socialize after school and for parents and teachers to advocate for mental health

support for their youth. There will be three (3) for students and one (1) for parents – all of which will be facilitated by licensed therapist(s) to create a safe space to talk openly about mental health and personal experiences in school.

BLHF is also working on tools and courses on “The Unspoken Curriculum” for students, parents, teachers, administrators, and the general public.

“Whether they realize it or not, Black youth are impacted by implicit bias and systemic racism daily. From the depictions they are exposed to on television and social media to the experiences they have throughout the course of their matriculation, these encounters have a detrimental impact on their overall mental health,” said Spirit, PhD, and clinical director of the group practice T2S Enterprises, LLC. “’The Unspoken Curriculum’ is a bold step in sparking discussions among Black students, families and the broader community to dispel the stigma and empower youth and young adults to openly share how they are feeling.”

During the 2021 Commencement exercises at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden became the 42nd recipient of the prestigious Elizabeth Blackwell Award.

She also delivered the Commencement Address and received an honorary degree.

The Blackwell Award is named in honor of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, known worldwide as the first woman to receive a Doctor of Medicine degree and who graduated from Geneva Medical College, a precursor to Hobart and William Smith. The Elizabeth Blackwell Award is given

by Hobart and William Smith to a woman whose life exemplifies outstanding service to humanity.

Hayden is the 14th Librarian of Congress and the first woman and first African American to lead the national library. Previous recipients include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, Founder of the Special Olympics Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and Nobel Prize Recipient Wangari Maathai, among others.

The award was presented to Hayden by HWS Trustee Thomas S. Bozzuto ‘68, L.H.D.’18, chairman and co-founder of The Bozzuto Group, and

by HWS President Joyce P. Jacobsen.

In accepting the Award, Hayden reflected on the nature of the pandemic: “Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell famously said: ‘None of us can know what we are capable of until we are tested.’”

She told graduates: “You are not only being

presented with a degree, but you are now being presented to the world. And if you ever had a doubt, you know that the world needs you. You are graduating at what has already been called one of the most significant inflection points in history. Hayden’s address concluded with a reflection on the strength that comes with experience and perseverance. On the steps of historic Coxe Hall, looking out to the graduates, Hayden shared the wisdom of Susan B. Anthony, who said, “The older I get, the greater power I seem to have to help the world; I am like a snowball — the further I am rolled the more I gain.”

“Be that snowball,” Hayden said. “Seize life and use your power!”

Survey experts have yet to figure out what caused the most significant polling error in 40 years in Trump-Biden race

More than six months after the astonishing polling embarrassment in the 2020 U.S. elections, survey experts examining what went wrong are uncertain about what led to the sharpest discrepancy between the polls and popular vote outcome since Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter in a near-landslide in 1980.

Lingering questions about the misfire in 2020, in which voter support for then-President Donald Trump was understated in final pre-election polls, suggest that troubles in accurately surveying presidential elections could be deeper and more profound than previously recognized. If the source of the polling miscall isn’t clear, then addressing and correcting it obviously becomes quite challenging.

Moreover, as I discussed in my 2020 book “Lost in a Gallup,” polling failures in presidential elections since 1936 rarely have been repetitive. Just as no two elections are alike, no two polling failures are quite the same.

Over the years, pollsters have anticipated tight presidential elections when landslides have occurred.

They have signaled the wrong winner in closer elections. The estimates of venerable pollsters have been singularly in error. Wayward exit polls have thrown Election Day into confusion by identifying the losing candidate as the likely winner. Off-target state polls have

confounded expected national outcomes, which essentially was the story in 2016.

Support that wasn’t there In 2020, overall, election polls pointed to Democrat Joe Biden’s winning the presidency. But the polls overstated support for Biden and underestimated backing for Trump no matter how close to the election the poll was conducted and regardless of the methods pollsters chose. Surveys in races for U.S. senator and governor were beset by similar shortcomings.

Those were among the key findings described recently at the annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, which was convened online. The organization had recruited a task force of 19 experts in survey research who examined the 2020 election polls in detail and reported being unable, so far, to pinpoint specific causes of

polling errors.

Their findings did make clear, however, that the 2020 miscall was the most significant in 40 years.

Polls in the presidential race in 2020 collectively overstated Biden’s lead by 3.9 percentage points, the task force chair, Joshua Clinton of Vanderbilt University, said in a presentation at the conference.

This marked the fourth presidential election in the past five in which the national polls, at least to some extent, overstated support for Democratic candidates.

Masking dramatic miscalls Averaging the polling errors, as the task force did in conducting its analysis, is broadly revealing about the extent of those errors. But it has the effect of masking several dramatic miscalls in late-campaign polls conducted in 2020 by, or for, leading news organizations. The final CNN poll had Biden ahead by 12 points. Surveys for The Wall Street Journal-NBC News and by the Economist-YouGov had Biden winning by 10 percentage points as the campaign wound down. A few polls, such as Emerson College’s survey, came close in estimating the outcome.

Biden won the popular vote by 4.5 percentage points.

Clinton, the Vanderbilt professor, said the task force eliminated several prospective causes of polling error in 2020, including those that likely distorted survey results in key states in 2016 when Trump unexpectedly won an Electoral College

victory. Those factors included undecided voters swinging to Trump late in the campaign and a failure by some pollsters to adjust survey results to account for varying levels of education.

White voters without college degrees were understood to have voted heavily for Trump in 2016, but those voters were underrepresented in some polls in key states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, where Trump won narrowly and surprisingly.

A source of the miscalls in 2020, Clinton said, may have been that Republicans were less inclined than Democrats to agree to be interviewed by pollsters.

If that’s so, it’s not entirely clear why that happened. And that prospect troubles pollsters and survey research experts.

Courtney Kennedy, director of survey research at Pew Research Center, said while moderating a panel discussion at the conference that “what keeps me from getting a good night’s sleep these days is the prospect … Republicans, or maybe certain types of Republicans, seem like they’re less inclined to participate in polls these days than Democrats.”

This may be a tough problem for pollsters to overcome, she said, adding, “It would be a real challenge” to calibrate poll-taking to capture such nuanced distinctions.

Likewise, it is unclear whether Trump’s sharp criticism of pre-election polls in 2020 dissuaded his supporters from participating in

surveys.

“So it’s possible that these may be short-term phenomena that will abate when Trump is not on the ballot,” Daniel Merkle, president of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, said in a speech recorded for conference-goers.

“On the other hand, it could be a broader issue of conservatives becoming less likely to respond to polls in general because of a decline in social trust, or for some other reasons. It will take further evaluation to understand this nonresponse issue and to adjust for it. This may not be an easy task,” Merkle said.

Overblown characterizations In the immediate aftermath of the 2020 election, several media critics asserted that polling seemed “irrevocably broken” and faced “serious existential questions.”

Such alarming characterizations appear overblown; polls are not going to melt away. After all, election polling represents a slice of a multibillion-dollar industry that includes consumer and product surveys of all types.

And if election polling survived the debacle of 1948 – when President Harry S. Truman defied predictions of pollsters and pundits to win reelection – then it surely will live on after the embarrassment of 2020.

Federal Grand Jury Indicts Chauvin, Other Officers in George Floyd Death

Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump and members of his team who won a $27 million civil judgment in favor of George Floyd’s family and whose relentless work in the case helped lead to a rare conviction of a police officer in the death of a Black person, recently applauded new federal indictments in the case.

“Today’s federal indictment for criminal, civil rights violations associated with the murder of George Floyd reinforces the strength and wisdom of the United States Constitution,” Crump said in a combined statement with attorneys Antonio Romanucci and L. Chris Stewart.

A federal grand jury handed down indictments against four former Minneapolis police officers at the scene of Floyd’s 2020 death.

The indictment charges the officers with violating Floyd’s constitutional rights. It alleges that Derek Chauvin, the former cop convicted in April on state murder charges, deprived Floyd of the right to be free from unreasonable seizure by a police officer.

Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng also were hit with federal indictments after failing to stop Chauvin from fatally wounding Floyd.

Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck and back for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, continuing even after EMT workers who arrived at the scene could not detect a pulse.

Chauvin, Thao, Kueng, and the fourth officer, Thomas Lane, all face a charge for failing to give Floyd medical aid.

“The defendants saw George Floyd lying on the ground in clear need of medical care and willfully failed to aid Floyd, thereby acting with deliberate indifference to a substantial risk of harm to Floyd,” the grand jury charged.

Additional charges were lodged against Chauvin related to his use of “unreasonable force” on a 14-year-old in September 2017.

The indictment noted that Chauvin “held the teenager by the throat and struck the teenager multiple times in the head with a flashlight.”

Chauvin further “held his knee on the neck and the upper back of the teenager even after the teenager was lying prone, handcuffed, and unresisting, also resulting in bodily injury.”

While Chauvin faces as much as 40 years in prison after his conviction on state charges, Thao, Kueng, and Lane are scheduled to stand trial in August on charges of aiding and abet-

ting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

Each has pleaded not guilty. “The Constitution claims to be committed to life, liberty, and justice, and we are seeing this realized in the justice George Floyd continues to receive,” Crump stated. “This comes after hundreds of years of American history in which Black Americans, unfortunately, did not receive equal justice. The constitutional violations that George suffered are clear and were also detailed by our civil litigation team last July.”

Crump continued: “Further, the additional indictment of Derek Chauvin shows a pattern and practice of behavior. We are encouraged by these charges and eager to see continued justice in this historic case that will impact Black citizens and all Americans for generations to come.”

How video games can spark an interest in history BPT - Summer is almost here! But with the sunny days and warm weather comes another concern for parents in an already challenging year: How their school-age children will be spending their summer days.

But time away from the classroom, virtual or otherwise, doesn’t mean the holidays can’t still be a time of learning, even with a hobby children already enjoy.

For many, that hobby is video games. And while games have been studied for their benefits in critical thinking, problem-solving and reaction times, one advantage is often overlooked - games’ ability to spark an interest in history.

“When game creators have the right intentions in mind, they can create something that is both engaging and educational for kids,” said James Hornfischer, naval historian and author. “Even if it doesn’t give them a full history lesson, getting them engaged in the action can open up their curiosity and get them to ask questions, which is important for a successful education.”

Of course, selecting the right game is crucial and depends on the age of a child and the themes parents are willing to expose them to.

Here are some to consider: World of Warships World of Warships is an online naval combat game set in the first half of the 20th century that lets you battle with - you guessed it - historically accurate warships.

Players can choose and customize their vessels in a port and strategize to win against the opposing team. Since its official launch in September 2015, World of Warships has added over 400 historical vessels, including the iconic warships that wrote history during World War II such as: * U.S. aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise * German battleship, Bismarck * Japanese battleship, Yamato * UK battleship, HMS Warspite Besides the ships, the game features notable historical harbors and port cities meticulously recreated to the smallest details. The game also awards players for their achievements through historical Collections, bringing the story about different time periods, technological achievements and famous commanders closer to players.

The game’s creators are dedicated to fans’ love of naval history, and regularly release educational resources including the “Naval Legends” YouTube series, which visits and explores the history of the real-world retired warships. This enables players to develop deep appreciation for the naval heritage. As a result, World of Warships organized a couple of successful charity fundraisers that saw players raising money to save USS Texas and USS Batfish ship museums from decay.

On May 18, World of Warships streamed its own “Night at the Museum,” which provided tours of 15 naval museums around the globe.

Assassin’s Creed Assassin’s Creed is one of the most popular gaming franchises and has released 12 main games and several more spinoffs that take place during different eras of history.

There’s no getting around the fact that violence plays a major role in the gameplay, but the series is also known for having an engaging storyline and being dedicated to historical accuracy both in its characters and settings.

The series’ games take place during the Crusades, the Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution and in ancient Egypt and Greece.

The franchise’s developer even made Assassin’s Creed: Unity, set during the French Revolution available for free after the near-destruction of Paris’ famous Notre-Dame cathedral, as a way to raise money for restoration and also let players explore the in-game recreation of the landmark. The series of games is available to play on consoles and PC. As the weather turns warm and kids enjoy summer break, encourage them to explore video games that are not only fun to play, but provide a bit of a real history lesson!
