Rich Township In Prospective

The talk of conversation in Illinois politics has often asked if there is real relevancy on whether township government matters. However, after closer review, we have discovered that township government is imperative to thousands of resi dents, particularly those who live in Rich Town ship.

Rich Township government provides an abundance of services on a regular basis. These services range from Senior Services, Highway, Youth Services, and Food Pantry to name a few.

The key to the success which Rich Township government has perfected is its commitment to diversity. Rich Township has an “Inclusion and No Exclusion” daily mission. At the core of the many outstanding attributes is Rich Township Super visor Calvin Jordan. Supervisor Jordan, a native of the great state of Arkansas, has been a valued component to the upward mobility of the entire Southland region. Jordan has taken his wide range of talents, particularly those learned from his days as Deputy Chief of Staff to the late Cook County Board President John H. Stroger, as a means to providing the best-in-class constituent services.

Under his brief tenure as the Rich Township Supervisor, Calvin Jordan has coalesced many prominent personalities that have produced stellar results for the taxpayers of Rich Township. In

2022, Jordan’s second year as Township Supervisor, Rich Township received the prestigious Illinois Township of the Year Award.

Being the ultimate humble servant that he is, Jordan attributes the success to his premier Town

the Constitutional elected officials. Jordan has accomplished tremendous success in a traditionally ego-driven political era by showing mightily a unified approach to governing. His team concept has now been adopted by many other government officials throughout Cook County. Supervisor Jordan and the entire township of Board have proven to be outstanding stewards of the People’s Monies.

The township’s fiscally conservative management style of the township finances has produced an all-new fiscally sound government.

Moreover, the township has been fortunate to employ some of the most qualified government administrators throughout the State of Illinois. The food pantry service has been featured by many media outlets. It services thousands of residents and transcends ethnicity. During the height of the pandemic, the food pantry and the general service division of the Township performed at an extremely elevated level. In addition, Senior Services was also recognized for its prominent level of consistency in focusing on every senior resident of the township. As a result, the constitutional officers of the township effectively manage their respective operations to benefit the township at large.

Rich Township has developed a core of services that is clearly unmatched by its counterparts throughout the State of Illinois.

Under the leadership of Supervisor Calvin Jordan and the entire Board of Trustees, the residents of Rich Township can feel confident that the township government has supreme relevancy and an enormous positive impact that can be felt throughout the region.

The Henry Ford Acquires and will Preserve Selma, Alabama Home Where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Planned the Selma-to-Montgomery Marches in 1965

DEARBORN, Mich., PRNewswire -- The Henry Ford, a 250-acre cultural destination and National Historic Landmark in Dearborn, Michigan acquired and will preserve the Selma, Alabama home of Dr. and Mrs. Sullivan Jackson. The historic home, known as the Jackson House, served as a safe haven where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others worked, collaborated, strategized and planned the Selma-to-Montgomery marches of 1965. The marches served as protests against the systemic racist policies within the south and raised awareness of the struggles black voters faced.

It was in the Jackson House on March 15, 1965, when Dr. King watched President Johnson’s famous “We Shall Overcome” speech. The speech announced the bill to be sent to Congress, guaranteeing African Americans the right to vote, which would later become the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The house and its entire contents are remarkably preserved: the dining room with a maple table around which civil rights leaders, members of Congress and two Nobel Peace Prize winners broke bread and shared dreams; the upholstered armchair where Dr. King sat as he watched President Johnson’s historic address; and the kitchen where Mrs. Jackson tirelessly cooked for her frequent guests.

Jawana Jackson, the only child of Dr. and Mrs. Jackson, and the sole owner of the Jackson House, has dedicated her life to protecting and preserving the Jackson House and elevating the history it holds. With that in mind, Jackson contacted The Henry Ford and requested the Jackson House be permanently relocated, installed, interpreted and presented in The Henry Ford’s outdoor museum, Greenfield Village. After more than a year of due diligence, The Henry Ford and Ms. Jawana Jackson

reached an agreement for acquisition.

“The promise I made to my parents at their deaths to preserve our rich family legacy is now fulfilled,” Jackson said. “I am honored to partner with The Henry Ford to enhance the visitor experience with the addition of the Jackson House at Greenfield Village. This historic private residence will now be included among other nationally significant homes and artifacts which represent America’s commitment to justice, peace and freedom for all.”

Greenfield Village is home to more than 80 historic structures that tell stories of great change. They include the courthouse where Abraham Lincoln practiced law, the laboratory where Thomas Edison perfected the light bulb and the home and workshop where Orville and Wilbur Wright invented their first airplane. The Henry Ford’s overall collection is comprised of 26 million artifacts including the chair in which Abraham Lincoln was assassinated and the actual bus on which Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat.

With more than 1.5 million visitors annually, including hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren, The Henry Ford will raise the profile of the Jackson House to a national and global level. In addition to hosting millions of people on site, The Henry Ford can reach millions more through its extensive digital outreach and educational programming, its website and social media channels, and its media publishing resources with worldwide reach.

“Maintaining, sustaining and programming historic buildings is what we do best,” said Patricia Mooradian, President and CEO of The Henry Ford. “We believe these authentic structures evoke powerful emotions and give insight into pivotal events that unfolded in American history. The Henry Ford has spent nearly 95 years captivating

audiences from around the globe with stories of American innovation, ingenuity and resourcefulness. Thanks to this collaboration with Jawana Jackson, we will be able to dedicate our expertise and resources to preserving and sharing the Jackson House and its important place in American history for generations.”

The Honorable James Perkins, Jr., Mayor of the City of Selma, reinforced the need to preserve this home and its story.

“I celebrate the Jackson family’s contribution to the 1960s Voting Rights Movement and express appreciation to The Henry Ford for relocating this valuable asset to historic Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan,” said Mayor Perkins. “My hope is that the Jackson family, The Henry Ford, the city of Selma and the nation, immensely benefit from this powerful preservation initiative.”

Moving the Jackson House from Selma, Alabama to Greenfield Village will be a multi-year effort for The Henry Ford. Once the contents are removed and the structure is taken apart and loaded onto trailers, it will make the 860-mile move to Dearborn, Michigan. Placing the house in Greenfield Village will require preparing a site, laying a new foundation, positioning and reassembling the house, replacing the roof, repairing floors and walls, connecting electrical and plumbing systems, installing central heating and air-conditioning, and adding fire protection and security systems.

Once the home is relocated to its new permanent residence, The Henry Ford vows to create innovative programming, bringing this structure to life for in-person visitors and online learners around the world.

BALTIMORE, Md., PRNewswire -- Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE: UA, UAA) announced that it is strengthening its partnership with Golden State Warriors point guard and four-time NBA Champion Stephen Curry. The enhanced partnership is designed to capture market share, fuel business growth and create new business opportunities on a global basis. This next chapter of the partnership will build upon the success and accomplishments from the past decade to continue driving product solutions and innovation, impacting communities across the globe, and growing Under Armour and Curry Brand together.

Stephen’s new role as President of Curry Brand will enhance his ability to drive athlete insights, product development, and strategic business and marketing endeavors. Since 2013, he’s helped propel industry-leading signature launches and provided key insights on Under Armour product technologies such as UA Charged, UA HOVR®, UA Warp and UA Flow. In this next phase of the partnership, Under Armour and Stephen will elevate this commitment across categories—from basketball to golf, women, youth, and sportstyle—delivering product solutions that help athletes perform at the highest level. Stephen will also assume a broad advisory role where his sphere of impact will strengthen brand love, recruitment, and present opportunities across categories to reach and expand Under Armour’s athlete roster.

“Stephen is one of the greatest talents of our generation,” said Kevin Plank, Executive Chair and Brand Chief, Under Armour. “He is an integral part of the Under Armour family, and we are excited and inspired by this next stage in our partnership. Under Armour and Stephen have released ten signature shoes in the decade since the partnership began, each with a unique design that harkens back to memorable moments throughout Stephen’s career and his ascension in the NBA. With the launch of the Curry Flow 10 this past fall, Stephen became only the ninth athlete in history, and the first Under Armour athlete, to release ten different signature shoes within his lineup. In 2020, Stephen and Under Armour introduced UA Flow, a best-in-class cushioning technology that has helped take his signature shoes, and his game, to the next level.

“If the past ten years have shown me anything, it’s that Under Armour and I can build great things together,” said Stephen Curry. “It’s all about impacting athletes and creating products that perform and resonate with them, and Under Armour does it best. In 2013, Under Armour bet on me and I bet on them, and I’m all in on taking this next step together.”

The partnership also includes increased funding for community impact efforts—creating opportunity, access, and equity for the next generation of athletes. Curry Brand, which launched in 2020, built purpose into its bottom line. Now, just over two years later, Under Armour, Stephen and Curry Brand have already refurbished ten courts, trained 2,500 coaches, supported 77 programs, and impacted more than 72,000 youth athletes—more than halfway to the goal of renovating 20 safe places to play, training 15,000 coaches and supporting 125 programs by 2025 to impact 100,000 youth.

CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES PLANS TO OPEN TWO NEW LOCATIONS IN MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENTS, AND FUNDING FOR A NEW BRANCH IN WOODLAWN

Chicago Public Library (CPL), in collaboration with Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot and the Department of Planning and Development (DPD), announced today two new libraries will be part of mixed-use developments planned for the Back of the Yards and Humboldt Park communities. The Library also announced that it will leverage $18 million in capital bond funding for a new library branch serving the Woodlawn community. These investments are a testament to the city’s ongoing efforts to promote literacy, education, and community engagement.

Part of the City’s INVEST South/ West initiative, each of the new libraries will anchor mixed-use developments that also include residential and commercial spaces. This approach to development aligns with the Library’s commitment to creating vibrant, welcoming spaces that serve as anchors for their communities.

“These new facilities will provide crucial resources and support to our residents, helping to strengthen our communities and promote education and lifelong learning,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “We are proud to

invest in our neighborhoods through the creation of mixed-use developments and look forward to seeing these new libraries become hubs of activity and lifelong learning.”

This mixed-use approach is a natural next step after CPL partnered with the Chicago Housing Authority in recent years to provide three new mixed-income housing developments with librar-

ies as anchor tenants, as well as a new library development in Altgeld Gardens combined with a childcare facility.

“Investments in Chicago libraries are an investment in safe and welcoming community anchors. We are thrilled to unveil two new library locations that are not just spaces to access information, but also serve as catalysts for community growth and development,” said Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown.

“In addition, these projects support educational milestones, provide vibrant cultural hubs and bridge the broadband gap by bringing together books, technology, and community resources to create vibrant, mixeduse spaces that will benefit residents for generations to come.”

“The inclusion and creative reimagining of library resources as community hubs within the buildings, elevates these two simple mixed-use, residential projects to the status of new civic icon,” DPD Commissioner Maurice Cox said. “Centered around colorful, light-filled multi-purpose spaces that serve as a beacon and focal point visually for the neighbor-

The Back of the Yards Branch library will be replacing the library currently located within the Back of the Yards High School campus in a new, more central location in the Back of the Yards/New City neighborhood, where it will be accessible to the entire community. In addition to the library branch, the development at 4630 S. Ashland Ave. is slated to bring affordable housing. It will also feature a federally qualified health care center, a performing arts center, headquarters for the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council and spaces for nonprofits Chicago Commons and Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation. The library will be funded primarily by a $15 million state grant, obtained by State Representative Theresa Mah.

“This new CPL branch is the result of years of advocacy and discussion and coordination across multiple levels of local government,” said Representative Mah. “I’m proud to have played my part in securing state funds to support this development and know the final product will be a valuable asset to the Back of the Yards and New City communities.”

The new branch will be more centrally located within the neighborhood in order to reach the entire community and will offer easy access via pedestrian foot traffic and public transportation. The library is a natural fit within the project’s overall family hub, setting up potential partnerships with other organizations within the development, elevating the services that all can provide within the site. The approximately 16,000 sq ft library space will be owned by the City, with a separate entrance from the remainder of the building. The project will include

below ground parking for the library, as well as green space on the exterior, which will be available for public use.

“Chicago is fortunate to have such an active, community-focused library system whose branches are gateways to so many critical City resources,” said Alderman Ray Lopez (15th). “By integrating this library branch into a mixed-use development with residential units on site, we are working to intentionally foster a learning- and health-centered neighborhood here in Back of the Yards that is inclusive of our cultural richness & diversity.”

“When I was a kid, the library was a safe place but it was hard to get there. The current library is even more difficult to access and is not safe for my part of the community,” said Back of the Yards resident Joseph Mapp. “It is very exciting to learn that this new library will be located at the center of our community, and we have the chance to build a safe space with all the resources we need, and it can be a library for everyone. Black, brown, everybody—doesn’t matter. We can all get to know each other without worrying and hopefully that will carry forward to the whole community.”

The innovative and transformative $55.3 million project will be built at the northwest corner of North Avenue and Pulaski Road by Team Pioneros. This groundbreaking development goes beyond simply building a new library branch. In addition to the approximately 16,000 sq ft public library space, Team Pioneros will breathe new life into the historic Pioneer Bank building, with plans to transform it into a thriving entrepreneurial incubator space, Latino cultural center, and offices for JGMA.

The project also includes the redevelopment of

a 0.75-acre parking lot north of the bank, which will feature a stunning nine-story, 100 percent affordable residential building with 75 units, offices for Humboldt Park Family Health, and a new library branch. This visionary development is being led by Park Row Development in partnership with All Construction Group and JGMA.

The Team Pioneros takes a bold and innovative approach to community development to create new opportunities for growth and enrichment. The project promises to be a beacon of hope for the community, providing a range of services and amenities that will serve as a hub of activity for years to come.

“Mayor Lightfoot’s invest South/West initiative responds to the needs of our community that we have been waiting for—for a long, long time,” Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26th) said. “I have worked closely with the Department of Planning & Development and Chicago Public Library to create additional affordable housing and a brand-new library. Our working families will now have a greater opportunity to live where they work and be an integral part of a more inclusive Chicago.”

“The opening of a new library at the Pioneros development will be an amazing addition to our collective growth as a community; particularly as we develop the Puerto Rican collection, which will add new dimensions to the historical presence and persistence of Puerto Ricans in Humboldt Park and in the city of Chicago,” said José E. López, Executive Director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center.

“These projects are incredibly exciting, where libraries are the momentum builders for other critical community programs like housing to shine a bright light on positive things for Chicago,” said JGMA

Foot and Ankle Safety Tips for the Summer Months

PHOTO

(StatePoint) From the beach to the backyard, taking care of your feet and ankles in summer is essential.

“Nothing ruins summer fun faster than a problem with your feet. However, a few smart precautions can help keep you healthy and safe,” says Gretchen Lawrence, DPM, AACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and an associate member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

To help you understand some of the most common summer risks to feet and how to avoid them, ACFAS is sharing these insights:

• Puncture wounds: Millions of Americans go barefoot every summer, and thousands will

sustain cuts and puncture wounds. To prevent injury and infection, wear shoes whenever possible and get vaccinated against tetanus. If you do get a puncture wound, see a foot and ankle surgeon within 24 hours and don’t swim until it’s healed. Bacteria in oceans and lakes can cause infection.

• Pool problems: Always wear flip flops or other footwear in locker rooms and on pool decks to prevent contact with bacteria and viruses that can cause athlete’s foot, plantar warts and other problems.

• Sun damage and skin cancer: Don’t overlook your feet during your sun protection routine. Feet get sunburned too, and melanoma on the foot or ankle is more likely to be

misdiagnosed than on any other part of the body. Astudy published in “The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery” reported the overall survival rate for melanoma of the foot or ankle is just 52%, in sharp contrast to the 85% survival rate for melanomas on other areas of the body. Apply sunscreen to the tops and bottoms of feet and limit sun exposure. Dr. Lawrence notes, “If you spot abnormal moles or pigmented skin, including under toenails, visit a foot and ankle surgeon. Early detection and treatment could save your life.”

• Pains and sprains:

Summer sports can lead to arch pain, heel pain, ankle sprains and other injuries. Proper footwear with heel cushioning and arch support is essential, particularly on uneven surfaces, such as sandy beaches or hiking trails. If injury occurs, use the RICE approach: rest, ice, compression and elevation to ease pain and swelling. Any injury that doesn’t resolve within a few days should be examined by a foot and ankle surgeon.

• Mower risks: Some 25,000 Americans sustain injuries from power mowers annually, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission. Many of these injuries are preventable. Always cut the grass in protective shoes or work boots and keep children away during this chore. Never mow a wet lawn or pull the mower backward, and always mow across slopes, not up or down

them.

• Travel concerns: Sitting for long stretches can increase the risk of dangerous blood clots.

“Whether road tripping or flying, regularly stretch your legs and pump your feet to circulate blood. Wearing compression socks for longer travel is also a good idea,” says Dr. Lawrence.

• Diabetes complications: If you have diabetes, prolonged hot and humid weather can lead to numerous foot woes. Any type of skin break has the potential to get infected if it isn’t noticed right away, and exposure can cause dry, cracking skin. Inspect your feet daily and wear closed shoes whenever possible. Swelling is another hot-weather risk, potentially making shoes fit tighter which can cause blisters. Compression stockings may not sound appealing in hot temperatures, but they can reduce swelling and help prevent poor circulation. Finally, never go barefoot in summer. Impaired nerve sensation can make it hard to detect just how hot surfaces are. Just a few minutes walking barefoot on pavement to grab the newspaper can cause third-degree burns. Rising Inflation is Impacting Mental Health. How the Country is Coping

(StatePoint) It’s no secret that the country is feeling the pinch from inflation and the rising costs of goods and services, with 48% of Americans struggling to make ends meet financially, according to the latest data from Dynata’s Global Consumer Trends survey. That’s up from 34% in August of last year. These circumstances are having a significant impact on wellness, with 53% of respondents attributing financial difficulties as being an extremely or very important contributing factor to their worsening mental health since before the pandemic. Women are feeling the impacts most. Nearly six in 10 women – 57% – say financial difficulties are the largest contributor to a decline in their mental health vs. 44% of men who say the same.

Many Americans however are finding new ways to ease the burden on their mental health. Here are a few of the habits and attitudes that have helped those who report having better mental health now than they did pre-pandemic:

• Exercise. Getting more exercise has helped 78% of

respondents achieve better mental health during this time of financial uncertainty.

• Spending more time with hobbies and interests. Seventy-four percent of respondents have seen an improvement in their mental health by spending more time and focus on their hobbies and industries. Whether it’s knitting, playing a sport or birdwatching, taking on a new hobby can be an effective way to better your mental health.

• Spending time with

loved ones. The pandemic was a long period of separation for many, but with life back to normal, spending time with loved ones has been a proven way to boost mental health, with 74% of respondents seeing an improvement.

• Rest. Now is a great time to sit back and take some time to relax, as 73% reported an improvement in their mental health from just taking time to rest.

• Cooking and healthy eating. The pandemic gave many a chance to spend more

time in the kitchen cooking their favorite meals. Seventy-two percent of respondents attribute cooking and healthy eating to helping improve their mental health. During these difficult financial times, spending more time in the kitchen can be a great way to help ease stress, save money on meals and of course, reap the physical and mental benefits of a good, balanced meal.

• Work-life balance. This has been a stressful time for employees, with news of layoffs coming almost daily, on top of the already existing financial stressors. However, 72% of respondents attribute achieving a better work-life balance to lowering stress levels and improving their mental health. For full survey results, visit https://www.dynata.com.

While many Americans are feeling the pinch right now, the good news is that proven coping strategies can help lighten the mental load.
